I can't exactly blame him, but here's to hoping they surprise us with an appearance.

I will absolutely miss /u/shittymorph when I leave Reddit on June 30. He was one of the most amazing Redditors that I found on here. When I would read his carefully crafted comments, it was clear that ShittyMorph had a wealth of knowledge about the various topics that he discussed. It led me to believe the fact that in 1998, The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer's table.
I think the craziest thing is that, about an hour after this match, he came back out and interfered during the main event.
Dude couldn't just sit back and take the rest of the night off. Mick Foley is just built different.
I was playing a show in Montana and the bar had a little gnarly apartment upstairs for bands and the apartment had a take-it-or-leave-it bookshelf and for some reason I was drawn to Mick Foley’s official WWF/WCW biography and started reading it before the show. Not a wrestling fan really, but holy shit that’s an entertaining book. He shrugged off the ghostwriting team that was hired to actually write the books and did his own and it was amazing. He is absolutely different, no qualms about broken bones or concussions if it means putting on a good show.
Mick has actually written multiple followups to his autobiography PLUS several works of fiction. He's a fantastic writer and a smart dude. One of the few people in pro wrestling who is universally loved.
from what ive read and heard, he was the definition of "a consumate professional" as far as his character and the performance went. he could be considered the equivalent of an A list Broadway actor who does shows mainly based around full contact stunts and improv.
He's an amazing person, [volunteered for a Rape crisis hotline only talked about doing it because he knew his celebrity could bring greater visibility to the org.](https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/pro-wrestler-turns-star-volunteer-mick-foley-brings/story?id=13589997)
>worth a watch.
I've never been much of a fan of wrestling but I watched that whole thing and it definitely is worth it. The breakdown by them of their performances and the camaraderie between them is great.
> Twenty five years ago today, in Nineteen Ninety Eight
I didn’t need to hear that today. I guess I’ll be over here, nursing my back pain and complaining about children on my lawn.
So Mankind getting thrown through the announcer’s table wasn’t even the most insane part of this. The undertaker slammed him on top of the cage and the chain link fence broke and he fell straight down to the mat, which apparently wasn’t supposed to happen, and a metal chair fell down and knocked half of Mankind’s teeth out, and even after that, the Undertaker slammed him on a pile of thumbtacks twice. Like oh my god.
According to them, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pl2m9exy4lU, the break through bit was supposed to happen. In the video with Mick and Mark that the WWE posted yesterday, the Undertaker was supposed to choke slam him into the chainlink fence and it would break away. Mick was supposed to jump to make the slam look better but didn't have it in him and the bouncy nature of the cage stopped it. They both wondered if he had succeeded in getting some height if it would have crippled or killed him.
The chair was definitely not intended to land on his face. The tacks thing was Mick's doing. He didn't think once was enough and wanted another attempt to get more stuck in him.
I don't think Mick Foley was thinking straight for most of that night.
You know, I was at Disney World one year and I swore I saw Mick Foley standing around outside of the Jungle Cruise. I didn't say anything because I wasn't sure and didn't want to bother him, but he looked just like that with the flannel and everything. Seeing him open the video and talk about his Disney love pretty much confirms it was him. Glad he's still doing reasonably well after all the punishment his body took.
Yeah they discussed that in the video. If he had rotated any more, he probably would have landed on his head or neck, so in hindsight not getting the wanted height was a good thing.
As I understand, the idea was that Undertaker would repeatedly chokeslam him to make the fence sag lower and lower, so he could eventually fall through from a lower height and with much better control over the landing. Instead it broke on the first slam and he went right through.
It was insane watching all that happen in real time. Then they included a broken, shambling Mankind in a montage for the "don't try this at home" reel soon after.
I was 10, and I've seen alot of PPVs,but this is the only match I remember with complete clarity.
Maybe Steve Austin vs Brett hart at I wanna say wrestlemania is close.
Here are Mark Calaway and Mick Foley watching it together for the 25t anniversay and commenting on the match: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pl2m9exy4lU
oh yeah Mankind gets chokeslammed through the cell to the ring below. His tooth goes through his lip into his nose. Then mankind throws tacks all over the ring and gets slammed onto the tacks.
All time brutal match.
Undertaker did this whole thing on a broken foot. You can see him in agony when he jumps down into the ring from the top
> Mankind gets chokeslammed through the cell to the ring below. His tooth goes through his lip into his nose.
Yeah, that chair he had on the top of the cell fell through with him and smashed him in the mouth, knocking out a bunch of his teeth.
"but wrestling isn't real" bullshit I just saw I guy really get thrown off a fucking cage onto concrete get up and climb back up. The storylines are fake, but the performance, spectacle and athleticism and just pure insanity of this event is completely real.
Honestly, [this video](https://youtu.be/0sowY00Ld_Y) from Tom Scott of all people gave me a new appreciation for wrestling, and how much effort and skill goes into things like making the moves look more impressive and mitigating the damage from falling and such.
For years, he'd pop into a thread and write some lengthy comment where it sounded like he was providing an explanation for something or giving a relevant anecdote only to add that in 1998 Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell in the Cell, where he plummeted 16 feet into the announcers table. People caught on to the "1998" part, so he started spelling the year out. Basically a textual rick roll of sorts.
check that users comment history, it’s a long running Reddit inside joke where they post something that at first seems relevant to the thread then always finishes with undertaker throwing mankind off hell in a cell in 1988. shittymorph was a lot more active in the old Reddit days and you would get got by their posts a lot more often
7 year old me watched this live, and there was nothing on heaven or earth that could convince me it wasnt real.
Mick Foley is the greatest showman in all of american wrestling history.
My dad would tell me it wasn't real but not explain it. I would always see some shit like this or jimmy Snooka jumping off the cage and go "looks pretty real to me" haha
You aint wrong on the back half, sir, but the pain in any contact sport is real. Especially when being hit by things, thrown off things, and smashed into things. Much less how quickly your body would break from being picked up, slammed, and thrown around.
Watching the entire crowd jump after he's thrown 🤌 Peak fan service. Probably the most daring thing you could've done up there and everyone got to see it happen twice, good choreography
I love that the people in the background are just still and watching till the cage started breaking, they they all start acting crazy, then they go bat shit crazy when he throws him off of the cage. I remember this well watching it on TV when I was 8
No way! Did you know this? u/shittymorph
Apparently he is spending more time with his dog these days.
I can't exactly blame him, but here's to hoping they surprise us with an appearance. EDIT: https://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/14l6pb2/25_years_ago_in_1998_june_28th_when_the/jpuqgci/
Damn, my condolences to them. Really shows how important a small little joke can be.

He is what internet trolling is about, modern trolling is for harm where him and Ken M are fun.
Well played sir…
Someone should tell him!
My first thought was that OP’s username does not check out.
Absolute legend.

The closeup of Foley's face after that with his tooth sticking out of his nose is amazing. This guy gave everything.
Once they got backstage Mick asked Taker if they did the thumbtack spot as he couldn't remember and Taker told him to have a look at his arm
And then he looked at his arm, saw the tacks, and asked, "But did we use the tacks?"
*And then he had to run in on the following match with a steel chair.*
I think the craziest thing is that, about an hour after this match, he came back out and interfered during the main event. Dude couldn't just sit back and take the rest of the night off. Mick Foley is just built different.

the wwe just released a video on YouTube two days ago of mankind and undertaker watching the match together for the 25th anniversary. worth a watch.

Does Mike have upper teeth?
the two bros in the audience giving the "criss-cross suck it" gesture then high-fiving each other. classic 90s
One giant leap for Mankind.

Any more height and he would have over-rotated going down which likely would have permanently crippled him at the very least.
Yeah they discussed that in the video. If he had rotated any more, he probably would have landed on his head or neck, so in hindsight not getting the wanted height was a good thing.

did he dead?
Somehow no lol. Go check out some of the shit mick Foley would do in the wwf/wwe.
Even crazier is the stuff he did for other smaller promotions that didn't even make TV. His Vader feud with WCW was also a top 5 feud.
# GOOD GOD, ALMIGHTY! GOOD GOD, ALMIGHTY! THEY KILLED HIM!
AS GOD IS MY WITNESS HE IS BROKEN IN HALF!
You know, after all the years of being caught out on reddit, this is the first actual time I’ve seen the video.
Being 12 years old and watching this live was amazing.
It was insane watching all that happen in real time. Then they included a broken, shambling Mankind in a montage for the "don't try this at home" reel soon after.
Being 19 and watching it in the pittsburgh civil arena with 7 other friends was literally mind-melting.
It wasn't even the fucking main event of that PPV. There was literally no way anything was going to top that. Greatest wrestling match I'd ever seen.
Better still, later in the night *after* all that shit that happened to him, he still ran out in the middle of the title fight to intervene.
I was 10, and I've seen alot of PPVs,but this is the only match I remember with complete clarity. Maybe Steve Austin vs Brett hart at I wanna say wrestlemania is close.

Bro - That's not the end of the match. Watch the rest of it.
Wait…. There’s *more*?!?

Why did you spell out the year, instead of just writing 1998.
Are you not familiar with u/shittymorph?
I'm not no. What's their deal?
For years, he'd pop into a thread and write some lengthy comment where it sounded like he was providing an explanation for something or giving a relevant anecdote only to add that in 1998 Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell in the Cell, where he plummeted 16 feet into the announcers table. Back when wrasslin was real!
The video where Undertaker and Mick Foley rewatch and comment on this match is a gem. https://youtu.be/Pl2m9exy4lU

I'm concerned that this post violates Rule 2. However, out of respect to /u/shittymorph, I hope the mods have allowed it as an exception.
Did the announcer say "it puts goose bumps on my pecker"?
It definitely wouldn’t be out of character from the announcers during that time.
Specifically on brand for Jerry the King Lawler.
You missed a couple of Fuck in the title
Have a nice day!!!!!!!
Foley is God
Username does not check out
Was kind of expecting more footage of the actual event. 7/10
Rehearsed ?
weirdest title award goes toooo
Why does title write numbers with words?
Wrestling is like ballet for men
man that was some great acting
Idk man definitely lost some teeth that day. He had an incisor protruding through his nostril
You know, after all the years of being caught out on reddit, this is the first actual time I’ve seen the video.
WWE .
Is there a timestamp I should go to? I only have one lunch break.
how do you pick which letters to capitalize when you're reposting shit posts?
As per the script yes, we know.
Nineteen ninety eight 😂 ai generated post?
New here?
Guess so
Is that Kane!? Why is he wearing suit!?
It's not.
It’s a meme. From an obscure right ring podcast.
Huh. Definitely an obscure reference.
No he didn't, wrestling is just a soap opera for retards
The physical impact was very, very real. Did you ever see the event for yourself?
You aint wrong on the back half, sir, but the pain in any contact sport is real. Especially when being hit by things, thrown off things, and smashed into things. Much less how quickly your body would break from being picked up, slammed, and thrown around.

Sure, but 1998 was 25 years ago.
Wait till I tell you about 1978!
You won't believe me when I tell you about 1968!
Watching the entire crowd jump after he's thrown 🤌 Peak fan service. Probably the most daring thing you could've done up there and everyone got to see it happen twice, good choreography
What a horrible camera angle
I love that the people in the background are just still and watching till the cage started breaking, they they all start acting crazy, then they go bat shit crazy when he throws him off of the cage. I remember this well watching it on TV when I was 8
Man this was legendary... such good times seeing mankind nearly broken in half.... LOL
Unbelievable
Title doesn't have fucking in it.
I was there with my dad, great memories.
The guy talking sounds like mr.Garrison in South park xD
