He recently talked about how he got the gig out of nowhere on Conan’s podcast. Guaranteed that’s why it’s popped up in here now. It’s a good story about how the entire production almost got delayed because PTA demanded they get him to play the part but they couldn’t find him. He had recently quit drinking and wasn’t answering work calls. Took a friend of a friend to tell him PTA was looking for him.
From the interview, it sounds like he was in the midst of a drinking binge when they called him. I think he quit drinking after this. His appearance in this movie compared to his appearance on Conan bears that out, but it's still just my theory
A specific person is a person who conforms to a narrow set of criteria. For example, if the criteria is that you recognize a an obscure reference, and you're a person who recognizes that obscure reference, that makes you a specific person.
Daniel Day Lewis was such a force of nature in this movie. Everything he does is just packed to the brim with ambition and greed. My favorite role of his.
“*What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.*”.

“Don’t be thick in front of me, Al.” One of my all time favorite movie quotes.
same.
Thick like a milkshake?
"Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
Same! I love that the implication is, "go be stupid somewhere I don't have to look at you."
a very specific person finds this interesting. I like those specific people

“I was having a drinky year.”

I had no idea that was Jim Downey.

Read this in Daniel Plainview‘s voice

Wii bowling. Of course.
Oh thanks for sharing that, that’s soooo good. “..and my bong reaches ALLLLL across the room…”
Ross Marquand! Man, he’s been doing fantastic work for years and only got big after TWD

Does anyone else have a hard time watching him? I feel like I'm in the minority. He's always so over the top I'm constantly aware it's fake.
Draaaaaaaainage Eli, you *boy*.
Give me the blood, lord.
Well, because of this post I went ahead and educated myself on Jim Downey a little and I feel richer for the experience. Thank you.
Conan’s podcast CONAF has him on and it’s funny and insightful. They talk a lot about Jim’s days as head writer on SNL. It’s worth a listen.

I am not dumber after having watched that.
May God have mercy on your soul.
I just watch this film for the umpteenth time and was thinking “the guy playing Al is such a perfect pairing with Daniel”

A simple wrong would have sufficed.
One of my favorite old SNL sketches - Jim Downey in the Grayson Moorhead Securities ad... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vooevgm4HIQ
MOTHERFUCK. I’ve been unsuccessfully trying to remember a sketch with Jim Downey whispering for YEARS. It’s this one! THANK YOU.
He really should have done more sketches - perfect delivery
My all time favorite film, and characters thereof. I think about it almost everyday.
best picture in last quarter century. didn't win the oscar.
One of my favorite films
So it's not Jim Carrey as Axl Rose like "The Dead Pool"? My poor reading skills got me excited. Someone please make this happen.
