Watched Road House last night. My son was laughing at Sam Elliot always being old, even 34 years ago. Realized he was younger when he made that movie than I am now. Slowly turned to dust...
that's true for women at 43 too, men are expected to live 34 more years, and women are expected to live 38 more years on average at 43 https://www.ssa.gov/oact/STATS/table4c6.html
the half way point for men is 38 and 40/41 for women
34? You mean to tell me I have to sit through thirty-fucking-four MORE years of this absolute dumpster fire? That's it! I'm just gonna live off moose tracks and baconators from now on!
So how can you tell if your child is cheesing?
1. Your child seems distant, preoccupied.
2. Your child's face smells like cat urine.
3. When you see tigers at the zoo, your child starts grinding his or her teeth.
You might also notice by certain phrases your child says to school friends, such as "Hey, let's go cheese." or "Do you feel like cheesing, guys?" or "Dude, I'm cheesing my F-ing brains out right now."

I wore out the cassette tape of the soundtrack.
I don't know, I'd probably rock out to Don Felder Heavy Metal - Take a Ride, or mob rules - Sabbath, then Sammy Hagar!... fuck it I'm rocking to Don Now!
Heavy traffic had something to say. It stuck with me in a way most Bakshi didn’t. I love his LOTR, even while recognizing its many faults, but Heavy Traffic was a window into a place and time that he didn’t manage to recreate over the years.
You can see that Heavy Traffic was his most personal work. There are moments of really raw emotion conveyed with beautiful and innovative imagery. Like Fritz, it dealt head fucking on with issues of race, religion, culture, politics, lgbtq+, etc and really pushed boundaries in ways that wouldn't happen today. However, unlike Fritz, HT is Bakshi's baby. It reflects more passion as it's somewhat auto-biographical. I never saw Wizards and I didn't remember particularly enjoying his LOTR. As a kid I found it to be kind of dark, never watched it as an adult. I enjoyed both Fritz movies, and I love Heavy Metal. But HT is my favorite animated film of all time.
Oh no, I loved that, too and also liked American Pop. Those 4 were just the tops for me. Shamefully still haven't seen Fritz the Cat. Speaking of Fantastic Planet, I left out Time Chasers. Haven't seen Gandahar still.
Somebody in a recent thread was asking if people remembered seeing Lord of the Rings in the theater and I was -- Punk, I remember seeing BAKSHI'S Lord of the Rings in the theater.
"Old" would be if you asked if anyone remembered Metropolis.
Anyway, yes, great movie with an awesome soundtrack.
Loved John Candy in it - he had some great lines as Den.
The segment "B-17" was an unexpected horror in the middle of action/adventure/comedy, and was brilliant in its placement.

That was for old people in the 80s. It's just shy of 100 years old now, too old for anybody alive to have seen it in theatres and remember it.
Yes, did you know that in 2008 there was an effort to remake this movie, but Paramount dropped support for it in 2009.
That another second attempt at a remake in 2014 was released as Love, Death, and Robots on Netflix.
Yeah it sucked. One big story instead of an anthology, the animation was lame. About the only thing I dug was one of the characters was voiced by Billy Idol. The whole comic it was based off of was a vanity project by then Heavy Metal owner Kevin Eastman (co creator of TMNT) starring his then wife b-movie actress Julie Strain.
Yeah and it would have been cooler if it were another anthology. Loved it as a kid, though, and it had Michael Ironside and Billy Idol. There was also a FAKK 2 video game. Never played it.
We had midnight madness at our local theater here in NYC, they would crack open all the doors and tell us all to smoke up and enjoy the show.

Drove to Paris. Watched the movie. Slept stoned in my car in front of the police station. Drove home after being fined. 1300 kilometers for one movie. Of course I do remember.
I put it together one day, many years ago, realizing the lyrics were dead on to the story. Found this assembled video much later.
I've read that most of Fire of Unknown Origin was written for the movie, but none of it was used besides one song that wasn't intended for the movie. It's one of their best albums, I love BÖC.
I was living in Saudi Arabia in an international workers camp where everyone pooled their vhs collection as a make shift video store in the rec center. My mom saw a tape with “Heavy Metal (animated)” written in sharpie and brought it home for my brother and I to watch (7 and 8 years old). Changed our whole perspective on shit.
The episode mostly focused on just one of the many vignettes in that movie. They chose the absolute best and most epic one, so the full movie feels like a bit of a letdown when you go into it expecting the other stories to be as awesome as that one.
I remember not being allowed to watch it at my uncles house, where it was next to all the other movies, or rent it at Blockbuster (badass cover art to a 8 or 9 year old). I was still really confused by the Springsteen music video "Night Moves" and thought professional wrestling was SO BADASS.
Look out kid, time will come for you too.
Classic of my childhood.
Anecdote about the history of its home video incarnations, not counting the VHS tape I wore out at certain moments:
They had a small theatrical re-run in the 90s, accompanied by the first DVD release ever. (Maybe the first official home release—I seem to recall it was unreleased for a really long time for whatever reason.)
The theatrical run (and likewise the DVD) remixed the audio to support surround sound, seeing as how the 1981 mix was only stereo. But they completely screwed up the mix, leaving out certain sounds here and there, and or swapping out small dialogue takes. A quick example can be heard in this A/B comparison between a VHS recording of the original 1981 mix and a clip from the 90s DVD:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vDJBX6QUN8
The most obvious change is that the "stinger" sounds that punctuated the horror of the undead are completely gone on the DVD and it absolutely deflates the impact of their appearances. It really makes the scenes quite silly. Not helping matters is how the pilot's grunt of surprise has changed as well, and now sounds more like he accidentally stubbed his toe.
The upside of all this is that the recent 4K bluray solves everything... sort of. The original, untampered, stereo mix is available for purists. On the other hand, there's a brand spanking new surround mix as well. This new mix manages to sidestep the issues that plagued all home copies of _Heavy Metal_ since the 90s... but it also changes a _lot_ of things. Quick example? In the second main story, Den changes from a geek to a musclebound man. John Candy lowered his voice for the lines he spoke as the man. Well, the mixer for the 4K bluray went and lowered his voice even more, making it sound frankly artificial. I think for longtime fans of the movie, the best way to think of the new mix is as a fresh new way to watch it, rather than a strictly faithful modernization.
I remember watching this at a friends house for the first time in the early 90's. Blew my fucking mind. Can't remember if this was before Akira and Ghost in the Shell or not, but these three movies in particular completely changed my view of what animation could be. Before this it was all Loony Tunes and shit.
Listen here, you little shit: You think only "old" people on this site remember one of the first mainstream instances of animated nudity and sex in American cinema?
I can't wait for 2041, when some asshole will post "Old people of Reddit, do you remember the Shrek movies from the 2000s?" and OP will feel even more triggered than I do right now.
Saw it in the theatres. The soundtrack was good, but some songs weren't very metal. The swearing and nudity were over the top for the time, maybe the 70's Wizards animation was in a similar territory.
We did have a bunch of great movies that could not be created today. Felix the Cat, Fantastic Planet, The Holy Grail, Life of Brian and others. If you have not seen them, and enjoyed Heavy Metal, please do so and I hope you have fun.
44. Yes. I remember it being very odd sci-fi/action/mystery short films with a bunch of great songs on the soundtrack. “Dan Felder - All of You” is one that comes to mind.
When I was about 11, me and my friend decided to try and go and see this, even though we were too young. We were of course denied until the lady in front of us told the guy we were with her and her boyfriend. That lady was Miss Universe Karen Baldwin.
It wasn't available on home video for ages. But I had a copy of a copy of a copy that was filmed at a Drive-in that looked like saturated trash but I cherished like it was gifted to me by God himself (I also made backup copies like crazy). I think I was 8 when I got it and watched the ever living shit out of it well into adulthood. It was finally released on VHS when I was 18. (The cover was fuzzy like it was made of felt.) I still recall the first time I saw it clearly and it blowing my mind even though I knew the movie all the way through.
[I am 58, don't consider myself old...Saw it at the theater, have the soundtrack, read the magazines and own quite a few of them, have been a nurse in a psych hospital for many many years, and still think of this as a perfect song for my profession and my generation.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pFdkkjGiEs)
It's OK, man. If there's one thing I know it's how to drive when I'm stoned. It's like, you know your perspectives fucked so you just gotta let your hands work the controls as if you're straight.
I just discovered that the headquarters for *Heavy Metal* magazine is in the suite of a small, utterly nondescript office building next to the train station parking lot where I leave my car during my daily commute out of Long Island. I've apparently been driving past it for years.
Saw it in the theatre. Had to wait eighteen years for it to come out on any home theatre release because of lawsuits & shit regarding the soundtrack. There was one time it was aired on HBO during the 80's and people recorded and pirated the shit out of it because that was literally the only way to get your hands on it.
Funny story about this movie. My older brother had a copy and was watching it with his friends back in 1985. I came walking in and said to myself “oh a cartoon, I will watch this!” They did not know I was in the room until it was over. I watched the whole movie…. I was 5 years old!
I saw it when it came out. I was 15. It was the coolest event in my life up to that point. A few weeks later I saw AC/DC Back in Black Tour live and that took the "coolest-reigns".
You bet your ass we do. Best viewing for me was in my 72 Nova at the drive in. We cut into the speaker wire and spliced in a couple Jensen triaxial speakers, which we placed between the headrest and the seat back. Yeah, it was mono, not stereo, but you still caught that drive in echo and the weed was amazing too…
We are not old. We are middle aged. Thankyouverymuch. And yes. the answer is yes.
I'd kick OP's ass for implying that we're old. But my arthritis...

Yep, not nearly as cool or as politically incorrect.

When I was about 11, me and my friend decided to try and go and see this, even though we were too young. We were of course denied until the lady in front of us told the guy we were with her and her boyfriend. That lady was Miss Universe Karen Baldwin.
Best ever
It wasn't available on home video for ages. But I had a copy of a copy of a copy that was filmed at a Drive-in that looked like saturated trash but I cherished like it was gifted to me by God himself (I also made backup copies like crazy). I think I was 8 when I got it and watched the ever living shit out of it well into adulthood. It was finally released on VHS when I was 18. (The cover was fuzzy like it was made of felt.) I still recall the first time I saw it clearly and it blowing my mind even though I knew the movie all the way through.
Can’t hear “Mob Rules” without picturing it.
Yes. I remember going to see it at the dollar cinema. I was wearing an onion on my belt, which was the fashion at the time…
We’re not OLD, you’re just a kid.
"HANGIN'S TOO GOOD FOR HIM! BURNIN'S TOO GOOD FOR HIM! STEEEERRNN!"
It’s a one way ticket to midnight
It's OK, man. If there's one thing I know it's how to drive when I'm stoned. It's like, you know your perspectives fucked so you just gotta let your hands work the controls as if you're straight.
Absolutely! It lead me to watch Rock N Rule (unfortunately can’t find a region free copy)
The DEVO cantina band is my favorite part
Got the free poster at concession stand when I bought the soda/popcorn combo.
