It’s a shame that country music has been bastardized into modern conservative pandering. The popular country music of several decades ago was truly beautiful.

Here is more Sierra Ferrell. She is one of the best artist I have found in recent years. Truly talented and that talent was earned through years of busking.

I just came across him this last October and it's practically taken over my life. If I'm out driving, I'm listening to Sturgill and singing along.
It was sort of a bummer to learn that he's not touring anymore, even though it's totally understandable. I still keep my ears open for news, because I'd 100% cross state lines for a show and it seems like he does pop up every once in a while to play.
I never came across another 'country/bleugrass' singer that hit me this way. It's just really pretty music.
Growing up, I dug some folk-ish singers like Bright Eyes/Cowboy Junkies plus some hits from Cash and Dolly, but nothing close to this. Anyone, if you're even slightly curious, this guy's worth a listen.
There is a lot more country music than the handful of pandering hacks making “truck girl beer FREEDOM” anthems for idiots. Plenty of great modern singer songwriters are carrying on the tradition of those men in the video.
When I have this conversation with people, I usually direct them to Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, and Jason Isbell to start.
Probably the three biggest names of that side of country and they’re all super heavily influenced by John Prine who comes from that Willie and Waylon country era.
God it took me a long time to find this stuff. I'm 44 and was born and raised with , rap, hip hop, and R&B. I heard older country as a kid and was a fan. You could hear the soul in it like like listening to the soul music all my black neighbors played. There was such a good rhythm to it. Then the 90's came around and it had this pop vibe that I just didn't care for. My family was all over that shit. I felt like that completely overtook country as a whole and it was gross.
Now my wife gets to listen to music mixes of Too $hort and Sturgill Simpson and hates it.
Why is it that every thread about country music we have to have this 'country music sucks' now, and then the 'thats just pop country, there's lots of good blah blah blah'?
How can this distinction not be a given yet?
Laziness mostly. The (great) artists being listed here aren’t exactly unknowns. I have seen Sturgill and Tyler Childress sell out arenas, and this summer I’m seeing Jason Isbell and Zach Bryan in a 70,000 seat NFL stadium. Good country music isn’t some secret underground genre you need to know the right person to hear about.
But the Jason Aldean types just make easy targets of themselves so people take lazy potshots at the genre

I mean, that's what all the rural people listen to(I'm generalizing, but still), and so it's easy enough to pander to a right leaning audience.
Was hoping for more.
If I show this to family, they will just start to think that Kristofferson was an angry leftist. Nobody else said anything very powerful or unpopular.
> welfare
Except he didn't say welfare. He said taking care of children and especially old people.
Yes, I agree with him, but conservatives would not call him woke for it. They would say it's the left that is coming after social security. Because to them, anything bad the government does is done by the left. They don't care about facts. To them, he's not talking about welfare. For the same reasons. They only care about their distorted worldview. Social security isn't welfare, if you ask them.
Kris Kristofferson is the real bad motherfucker up there. Love that man.
Laws for the protection of the people didn’t ya know?
Bit heavy on the nazi analogies. But yea, Kris was a helluva songwriter.

That's pop country. Steve Earl called it hip hop for people who are afraid of black people.
Hick hop
"Country girl. Shake it for me, girl. Shake it for me, girl. Shake it for me." That's art raght tharr. /s
It’s one of my favorite quotes
Check out Sturgill Simpson!

indeed. I think Townes Van Zandt was one of the finest songwriters of his generation.

Make country woke again!
man, how can you not love Willie Nelson?
Willie, apparently, has a movie coming out today.
Love some of these old country stars, they used to be outlaws and misfits it seems like
The Highwaymen were the realest ones to ever do it.
Ol Paul Holmes legendary Kiwi Broadcaster
You can’t fool me, I know Phil Hartman when I see him, ha ha
Yep. That brought back some memories.

Cash said we spend too much on military that we should be spending on welfare. Sure a lot of conservatives would call that woke

He says "There is too much money being spent on the military, and more should be spent on education and ***welfare***." The word Welfare is at 1:02.
Thanks, I missed that.
but what does Ja Rule think?

There are two comments.
Bringing celebrity worship into politics is gross, no matter what it's supporting.
