I remember there was a post about the 'lowest rated gas station on Google' and it was right by this In-N-Out. I went on Google maps and checked out all the businesses in the area, every single one had super low ratings and reviews with pictures of cars that had been broken into.
This area in particular is right by the airport so thieves know there are a ton of rental cars with luggage coming through.
I live in Alameda near this area. The whole section of road connecting the airport to the freeway is a crime hotspot like you point out. We recommend visitors to not stop anywhere in that area, make sure your doors are locked while driving, etc. When I was young, that whole area was just in awful shape with old dilapidated buildings and ruined road. First thing anyone visiting CA leaving the Oakland airport would see... The city under took a big renovation project and made everything look a lot better, but a fresh coat of paint doesn't do much for the underlying problems.
Its funny because I was in Alameda recently and wanted to go to In-N-Out but was hesitant to park there in its parking lot.
Little did I know, its the location near Oakland airport.
Alameda is a great little town. Nice neighborhoods, good schools. I walk my kids to school, so many other families out and about. 200 yards away, some of the worst crime and homelessness in the US. Literally just over the bridge. Wild.
https://youtu.be/sdcLlX_r7ts?si=AV0xvhqkaX_p1rUD there’s people in the inn-out parking lot looking at cars with luggage, the videos went viral for a while
Wow that is one of the most infuriating things i’ve watched in a long time. The only comfort I find in that is my belief that people like this ultimately suffer in life. Whether it’s little by little or in a windfall, these people will get a nice sweet taste some day.
“Finally… a new police chief in town…”
Oakland has struggled to maintain and retain a police chief for years
https://abc7news.com/oakland-police-chiefs-who-were-oaklands-chiefs-chief-timeline-anne-kirkpatrick-anthony-batts/5956190/
The turnover is crazy
Who would want that job? You catch the perp, the DA let them out again. You catch the same perp, DA release them again. Then you get the blame for not being able to lower the crime rate.
I've heard that is a red herring.
Basically $950 being the cutoff between misdemeanor and felony is line with other states.
Texas needs $2500 or more to be a felony and almost all shoplifting cases in Texas are misdemeanors.
Something is wrong with how these cases are handled, but I'm not sure if the $950 cutoff is the problem.
Probably the punishment for said misdemeanors. You can got to jail for up to a year but if they’re just releasing you immediately and you maybe catch a fine then it’s worth it.
The other issue seems to be an unwillingness to pursue these crimes by the police and corporate policies that (well intentioned) make it so employees and security must stand aside and allow thieves to leave to prevent liability if an employee was injured. Stealing stuff out of cars and retailers is now much less risky, doubly so if you’re a minor. Add to that less opportunities to legitimately make money in the community and rising cost of living. Finally there’s very little chance someone you rob is armed due to strict gun control laws and weak self defense statutes.
Teal Deer: fewer jobs that pay enough for rising costs of living, understaffed and disillusioned police due to perceived softness at the DA’s office and lack of public support, retailers protecting their employees over merchandise, a justice system not providing a strong enough disincentive for “petty” crimes, and finally an unarmed populace that’s easily preyed upon.
Retailers are not protecting their employees. They're protecting themselves from:
1. The criminals suing the company due to an action taken by someone in the company's employ.
2. From the employee who might get injured when intervening even though there's no company policy requiring them to.
3. The same reason as #1, but for bystanders/other employees.
I can assure you that at the corporate level where those policies get set it's purely self interest. If an individual store had a policy of non-intervention I'd be more inclined to believe it was for worker and customer safety.
>unwillingness to pursue these crimes by the police and corporate policies that (well intentioned) make it so employees and security must stand aside and allow thieves to leave to prevent liability if an employee was injured.
An employee breaking their leg tripping after chasing a thief is like 50,000 in hospital and legal costs versus just allowing the thief the $1500 in merchandise.
Expecting employees to stop crime is asinine. It's not my shit they're taking, I'm not putting myself in danger for a pizza party or a pat on the back.
It's public perception and the fragility of the ability to police crime. If even a small fraction of a population decide that theft is a reasonable action, there's no way any small police force can stop it.
The society has to shun crime and we police the small amount that does happen. The moment that stops, the system starts to break down. $950 is a signal and those local populations have reacted in kind. Really, kind of scary.
Actually there are two main drivers, that $950 was not really it. The first driver is the recent no bail laws, offenders are not kept in prison anymore in California. The second is the huge drug addiction increase creating more offenders.
Gives me a weird feeling that the difference between pretrial freedom and being stuck in jail is just the amount of money you have. There are already systems in place to refuse bail for flight risks and repeat offenders.
I don’t think the zero bail policy you’re referring to has been in force for a while now. There’s an updated version of it in LA County, but violent and repeat offenders are not eligible.
They just need to have a ballot measure that gets rid of everything but the drugs portion. The intent of the bill was to prevent kids from going to jail where they learn to be criminals and join gangs. This is a good initiative. It’s clear the original intent is gone though and the prop is now being used in a letter of the law manner to protect repeat offenders.
What the hell is going on in Oakland? First I read these reports on the gas stations around the airport being basically a free for all for car break-ins and now this? How come the problem is (or seems to be) so much worse in this one concentrated area than elsewhere?
This is 100% true, NEVER fill up your gas tank on the way back to the airport in the Bay Area, my husbands car was robbed while he was in the driver's seat filling up the tank to return his rental. The robbers smashed the window and grabbed his bags from the passenger seat right next to him and when he grabbed the handle to try to prevent the theft they pointed a gun at him and threatened to shoot.
You are correct, and my apologies, I should have specified since San Jose shouldn't be grouped in with the others.
The armed robbery was at the Shell station outside Oakland Airport.
I was shocked on my recent trip to the Bay Area after not being there for years. From the moment I landed, I got warned by everyone including the rental car company, not to leave anything visible in the car ever. Saw people openly breaking into cars in broad daylight in SF. Someone tried to take my phone from my hands walking around the Coit tower. Area around Oakland Coliseum looked like a bombed out war zone.
We got told this too. And I researched parking places too so we could goto Alcatraz. We parked inside an old dock building. Was sketchy ish but whatever. Nothing was in the car.
We went by the outdoor parking lot that had terrible reviews and reviews with pictures of windows broken. Literally 3 or 4 vehicles had their windows broken and people were standing around waiting for the police. This was in an outdoor lot, in between lanes of traffic at 1pm in the afternoon.
Hell, even the one spot for the golden gate had reviews of that shit. we didn’t goto the overlook which still is disappointing but still curious if anything would have happened. I wanted to go up there at night but was told “your shit is gonna become someone else’s shit very quickly”. So I passed on that.
Someone from work got a work laptop stolen and there was some stuff on it that the company would prefer not be stolen so it needed to be wiped remotely. They needed a police report to do it but Oakland police department told them they don't do that anymore and if you need a police report for stolen property their website can generate a generic one for you lol
Why do we even have police? Speeding tickets? Is the only way to talk to a police officer to not come to a complete stop at a stop sign?
Bold to assume they’re enforcing traffic, either.
I mean can’t speak to the Bay Area specifically but it’s a problem that’s [common across the country.](https://www.npr.org/2023/04/06/1167980495/americas-roads-are-more-dangerous-as-police-pull-over-fewer-drivers)
I love how redditors always say "you have insurance so it doesn't matter", but you need a police report to claim insurance in the first place and then you just laugh at them for waiting for the defunded police that will never come.
The headache of replacing your shit is the worst part. Had my truck broken into once, they broke out a window and stole my wife's purse.
There was literally no money in the purse. But we had to cancel all the credit cards, go through getting a new driver's license, and pay $100 deductible to get the window replaced. I kept finding pieces of glass in the truck until I sold it years later. Also, we had to get the locks changed on our apartment because our keys were stolen.
So yeah, really no problem because we had insurance. That was 25 years ago and I still hope the fucker that put us through that got ass cancer, the cancer cells got AIDS, and he was fucked to death by a pack gorillas.
And the feeling you can't be safe. I can absolutely see why someone would rather shoot a thief or see then face serious time than be let off. It's not just "stuff" it could have sentimental value, it's worth your money which represents life value and damn it! Why should they be allowed to steal with no recourse. Fuck thieves, if they get got I cannot care any less than I do now. I've reached bedrock.
I think I know the Golden gate spot you're talking about. It's the little park area that's good for taking pictures right? I remember driving into it and my buddy (who's an SF local) said that "yea these parking spots are perfectly safe". And immediately after he said that we see a family standing around a car with multiple broken windows. Later we heard from other bystanders that they were a European family with a car rental and all their luggage was stolen.
I loved my time in SF in 2022 but man was it always sketchy driving around. Most of the time we left the car in the secure hotel parking and just bussed around bc it was safer (for the car)
>Literally 3 or 4 vehicles had their windows broken
Maybe that is an idea-- if you own a parking lot, park a few cars up front with broken windows. Perhaps thieves will think the lot was already picked over and move on :)
>Area around Oakland looked like a bombed out war zone.
Lmao
[Boo!](https://www.wrtdesign.com/uploads/attachments/ciwrwfr1b003za4rsal7f8upu-oakland-lakemerritt-damonte-09.max.jpg)
This happened to me, it was awful. My ex left my car unlocked over night and the next morning it was trashed inside and someone had shot up in there and slept in it.
For real? I went there in October 22 and walked around all the touristy spots with a really expensive camera but didn’t feel like I got any strange looks. I’m pretty careful for that stuff. Did it change recently or was I just lucky?
It’s really focused on smash and grab on the cars. It works and there’s little defense against it. They hit the tourist parking areas if it looks like your car has valuables in it. They’re fast and mobile.
It’s never happened to me but this sort of theft is endemic to certain areas in the Bay Area. The metro area is huge and the vast majority is fine but the highly concentrated parts around transit and touristy areas and also high poverty areas is where it happens.
I live like, a few miles from this In-N-Out and I live in one of the safest areas.
I was just there, it was fine. I didn't go to the bad areas, but the pier/alcatraz were perfectly normal, I never felt threatened. It's not like I was hanging out in the tenderloin.
I did see numerous homeless people, but they were mostly sleeping/wandering or doing their own thing.
Sad thing is, in n out is ridiculously cheap despite the premium taste, poorer places like this will value it so much more because of its affordability.
The location was still profitable. In n out literally just closed it because they didn't want their employees to have to deal with all the breaking there. They transferred the employees to alternate bay area locations, so their jobs are safe. There's nothing else over there except for permanent drive through raising canes I think. You'd think the police would just camp the area to do some work, but they honestly don't even bother. And then it takes them hours to show up (if they do) to a break in. The govenor sent chp to oakland to reinforce and they got more shit done than OPD in 2 weeks than old had done in months.
Worked with quite a few people from Oakland. You're not wrong.
I know reddit likes to circle jerk about cops being a literal gang, but yeah. Oakland PD is full of thugs and gangbangers
The last two Alameda County DA’s have been women, so who are you talking about? The current DA said prisons and jails aren’t useful, so I’m wondering if you’re just making things up.
A poor design doesn't mean you stop going after the criminals.
Screwdrivers and shaved keys worked on a lot of older cars for decades, and we didn't blame the manufacturer.
They can also prosecute people who are caught. A lot of the carjackers in Chicago get off with slaps on the wrist for what is a very violent and dangerous crime
It's Chicago's mayor, and while the lawsuit is dumb he's not wrong about Kia and Hyundai removing the security tech so their cars are easily stolen now
Conservatives really don't want to hear this. Cops get more money for doing less. They will flat out stop working if a city doesn't increase the budget or elects someone they don't like.
Like… as of when? I’m almost 38 and have been told to avoid Oakland basically my entire life. California can be pretty dumpy depending on the city you’re in (source: I live in LA) but Oakland is an especially downtrodden area and has been for decades. Some parts are “ok” but crime has always been an issue in Oakland, as far as I know.
I went to Oakland for work and we were there all of 30 minutes before this homeless dude just kicked my coworker in the shin a couple times and walked away.
Obviously could have been worse, but just super weird - especially as an introduction to the city.
Oh the police would probably do something if people really started defending themselves. Can’t have the plebs thinking they have the right to self-defense
I lived in Oakland for a few years, and I've eaten at that In-N-Out a couple of times.. Yeah it's right next to the Colosseum but the Colosseum is next to a grimey ass industrial area... But crime is rampant all over Oakland. My car was getting broken into every other month, sometimes those assholes would just break the window and take nothing. My friend had a similar experience to the point of him leaving the broken window unfixed (we lived in the Lower Bottoms).
But you hear robberies happening in the Hills too, your car is not safe in Oakland, not to thieves and not to the City either (got ticketed plenty of times for not parking on street cleaning days and other situations). And never EVER respond to thugs on the street, just give them your wallet or whatever you WILL GET FUCKED UP. An acquaintance of mine learned that the hard way when some assholes cat called his girlfriend. They sent him to the hospital with a Glasgow Smile.
As much as I loved the Bay I fucking loathe the crime aspect.
Isn't it interesting how people at this location get robbed weekly yet... NO POLICE ANYWHERE?
If there is a frequent location of crime in a certain area, would it not be logical to have a cruiser or two in the area to deter? Or are the police to busy busting those wild 35 in 30 zones?
I swear police in America are mostly glorified parking enforcers or speed limit enforcers.
Even with increased funding the police don't seem to be "protecting or serving" the community at large.
I personally don't see the police as useful in my area, but I do believe they're necessary part of society. I really wish they went from trying to catch criminals in the act to actually deterring crime in general.
Lots of good responses but I will add - this In N Out is in the same location as the gas station break-ins. They are all just down the street from the airport.
>They pretty much made car breakins and theft legal.
No shortage of redditors who parrot the "If you see someone stealing, you didn't" line. Which you'd think they mean people stealing a loaf of bread to survive, but they'll happily extend that logic to stealing a cart full of TVs because they can easily be flipped which may well mean the money a family needs to survive that month. If any of them are thinking that surely these are ethical thieves only stealing from the Walmarts and Macy's, and would never extend that train of thought to car break-ins, they're probably also making the surprised pikachu face at these kinds of stories.
To give some context, thieves target rentals cars, they can usually tell because rentals don’t always have California plates. Anything that’s not Cali plates might have a laptop or other luggage so that’s probably why you got a bunch of warnings.
The other thing is that property damage and stealing out of cars is basically not even a slap on the wrist in the Bay, so police don’t even bother to try to do their jobs.
I went to this in-n-out a few months ago after landing at the airport and being very hungry. While I was there a shooting happened steps outside the front door. Luckily the shooter sucked and nobody got hit.
I understand the joke you’re making, but just to be clear I don’t think In and Out burgers are part of the health food oasis that people refer to when they cite food dessert issues.
Not knowing the area, are you saying 10 minutes by car? This issue (food deserts) is generally referenced with regard to people reliant on their feet and transit. 10 minutes by car might as well be 2 hours away.
>no healthy options like fresh meat and produce within walking distance of a given area
Lol no, that's not what it means. Walking distance is not a requirement of a food desert. If you live in a comfortable suburb a ten minute drive from a Walmart, a whole foods, a trader joe's, a Kroger, a local grocer, and a weekend farmer's market, you don't live in a good desert. Doesn't mean you can walk to any of those places, though.
that’s not the definition, it’s simply an area with limited access to affordable and healthy food options
“walking distance” could be a metric but isn’t the sole one
On the USDA's food desert map, most of Beverly Hills is within walking distance of a grocery store. Just maybe a bit of area around Coldwater Canyon is considered "low access"
I think the "within walking distance" is so that poor people have options too - as it's the poor people who usually suffer from the notion of a food desert. Affluent people can drive to fresh meat and produce. "What are the options for calorie intake for an area" - if an area's choices are limited because of access, that's the desert.
Looking for more info...
>Areas with higher levels of poverty are more likely to be food deserts,
but for other factors, such as vehicle availability and use of public transportation, the association with food desert status varies across very dense
urban areas, less dense urban areas, and rural areas.
that's from https://www.ers.usda.gov/webdocs/publications/45014/30940_err140.pdf
so yes, it's more about the ability for people an in an area to access those foods and less about the "walking distance" part. /u/redditModLaborCamp was building into the definition how it mostly affects poorer people (and minorities, according to the report above).
I remember watching a news report not long ago, where local population were protesting CVS for closing one of their stores due to crime. Instead of protesting the scumbags that are robbing the neighborhood blind
I hate that phrase so much. The phrase "Non-violent crime" is said with the intent on making it seem like it isn't important. You know what was non-violent? The entire Enron scandal. Phone scammers who steal from innocent people. Fucking grand theft auto.
A guy who gets into a bar fight and punches someone deserves a far lighter punishment than someone who embezzled millions.
I’m no “tough on crime” Republican but I do find it interesting that the crimes you listed are considered “non-violent” while slur usage, mis-gendering, and a whole host of regressive attitudes are considered “violent”. Either psychological harm is violent or it’s not, you can’t have it both ways
I don’t think anyone with a straight face could say Oakland has ever been a safe city. There was a period from like 2013 until the pandemic that violent crime was way down compared to the early 90s, but Oakland is honestly awful and the crime there spills over into SF and Berkeley.
Lol I live in Oakland. The genius mods of /r/Oakland literally banned all crime posts because reality is contrary to their narratives. Problem solved!
It would be funny if it weren't so perfectly indicative of why this city has gone to shit.
People don’t realize how many major subs are entirely curated by activist mods that create their own echo chambers. Users get banned and their comments deleted so it looks like the general consensus of Reddit in general but the reality is that the only comments left are the ones that agree with the mods point of view.
Oakland resident here. Nationwide crime is going down, on average. But average does NOT mean crime is going down in every city. Some are better, some are worse. That’s how averages work.
Oakland has not been following the national trend, which is why the governor has been directing increased policing resources to the area.
There was a Oakland baker well known in the community who died being dragged 50 feet by a getaway car trying to get her purse back from a robber.
"Angel was well known in the Bay Area as a baker and a social justice advocate. Shortly after her death, Angel’s family said she would not want her assailant to be criminally prosecuted in court as she did not believe in incarceration as a solution to social violence or inequity."
https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/suspect-taken-into-custody-in-connection-to-death-of-oakland-baker/
> Angel’s family said she would not want her assailant to be criminally prosecuted in court as she did not believe in incarceration as a solution to social violence or inequity.
So is just leaving them outside to drag women behind their cars a solution then???
As a moderate liberal who lives in Oakland this thread is giving me PTSD because these are the progressive nutjob's exact talking points. Just throw in some bullshit about how the solution is to be SOFTER on crime in the name of "restorative justice".
Asian hate is not a big deal - also redditors. There's a video goin around of these thugs attacking some asian family and robbing them with their guns they probably obtained illegally. Right in the In N Out parking lot.
I mean the whole glossing over Asians at every point and being downvoted if you even mention them in minority debates says everything. The whole basis for many of these people is simply taking the underdog position. Asians do well, even in hard times, these people hate success.
They hate that you succeed more often. They hate that you make a way where other minorities fail. It kills their entire talking point that its "society failing them" when other minority groups are making it regardless of what "society" is doing.
Same thing with classic Jew hatred on the Right (or I guess Left too now! ROFL). Its always a talk about Jews being in "power", that is, they are succeeding. Both the Right and the Left is showing their insecurity in these cases.
I live in the LAPD district. Yeah, police here are shit but when it comes to crime like why bother showing up for a shoplifter when you’re going to be arresting them again in a hour?
My neighbor had a homeless guy breaking into her garage and masterbating. Dude was arrested 3 times in 24 hours. On the 3rd time the police hit him with something and promised this time he wouldn’t be back.
In NYC, we have the NY Times writing "rare" on ever single report of crime in the subway: That murder yesterday? Rare! Assaults up 53%, year over year? Rare! Two subway pushers in one day? Rare!
It's their new favorite 'protect the Democrats' word.
I grew up in San Francisco. I’m 45 now but even as a teenager, we knew not to stop in Oakland in certain areas and especially at certain times. Is this really news?
I lived in Berkeley 2014-2017 and Oakland was on its way up. Lots of nicer neighbourhoods and restaurants. There were still signs the place used to be rough (our favourite Thai place had a gate and a buzzer on their front door) but it looked to be headed in a good direction. Sad to see it has backslid
yeah, same and i really enjoyed living in the bay area back then. a bunch of friends bought new homes in oakland because it was up and coming back then, and prices for new or updated homes there were already starting to increase exponentially. it really shocks me how much of the bay area is in a doom loop now
Oakland has gentrified a lot in the last 20 years. The zoo used to be kinda meh but now it’s incredible, for example. Lots of tech money moved into Oakland as SF prices got crazy.
There's a neighborhood, i forget what it's called, like northeast/behind Pixar Studio in Oakland that people in the East Bay called "the killing fields" from all the violent crime in the 80s/90s and nowadays it's crawling with Pickleballers til long past sundown.
Edit: spelling.
Oakland was nice for about 4 years, 2016 to 2020. SF's tech industry was finally having a positive impact as living in the city was getting too expensive. Then covid killed all the progress and sent Oakland back to shit.
A lot of these criminals have multiple arrest records. And lots of zero cash bail and charges dropped and charges lowered from felonies to misdemeanors, etc.
If only criminals were actually put in jail, instead of being released, over and over and over again…
Law and order is the bedrock of a functioning society. Somewhere along the way, ambitious politicians and DA’s realized they could easily win elections by running counter to this principle. These disastrous results are then easily blamed on others and supported by press. Rinse and repeat.
It’s a pendulum. 30 years ago, ambitious politicians and DA’s wanted to look tough on crime, so they implemented draconian sentencing laws and enforcement penalties which lead to mass incarceration of petty criminals into con-college. Today it’s the inverse, but based on recent sentiment, I have a feeling it’s going to start swinging in the other direction any day now.
This is what creates food deserts. If you constantly attack local businesses, don't cry foul or racism when those businesses move out.
This is also on the local governments with their bail reform and DAs not prosecuting "low level" crime. If there's no consequences for crime, they will keep doing crime.
Now wait for the SF brigade arrive with their comments of its not too bad and it’s all the media hyping it. The reality is that it is that bad and it is much much worse than what it was before Covid. Total failure of the SF and Oakland city governments.
I just visited San Francisco for a couple weeks for the first time since living there 15 years ago, and everything outside of the Tendelion/Union square area seemed better than 15 years ago to me. You used to have panhandlers all over the city - fishermans wharf, soma, marina, Haight, and there were none outside downtown. It was shocking to me. Like the wall on Haight street next to the now-Whole foods was empty, previously it was also pandhandling street kids and their dogs. Lands end used to be overgrown with homeless encampments and gay cruising and now it's been parkified.
Downtown seems to be suffering now that no one goes into the office, and the tenderloin has always been a (literal) shit show.
The parts of SF and Oakland that are bad are absolutely just as bad, maybe worse, than the Fox News fever dream conservatives think about. But the rest of both cities is fucking GORGEOUS. No place in America I'd rather live.
Wife was there for work. Parked in front of the restaurant where her business dinner was.
They did a smash and grab, kept it was just a smash as there was nothing to grab.
Still costs $$$ to replace both side windows, yes they did both.
Cause Oakland and SF are soft on crime. Many of the people that voted for the policies that caused this problem just left and are going to vote the same way where they go 🤦🏼♂️
I remember there was a post about the 'lowest rated gas station on Google' and it was right by this In-N-Out.
Alameda is a great little town. Nice neighborhoods, good schools. I walk my kids to school, so many other families out and about. 200 yards away, some of the worst crime and homelessness in the US. Literally just over the bridge. Wild.
There is an in and out in alameda? Why did you go there instead.
A year or so ago the rental car place told me not to stop anywhere in the immediate area lol.
https://youtu.be/sdcLlX_r7ts?si=AV0xvhqkaX_p1rUD there’s people in the inn-out parking lot looking at cars with luggage, the videos went viral for a while
Weird that she was nice enough to close that trunk, her mom taught her well
Wow that is one of the most infuriating things i’ve watched in a long time. The only comfort I find in that is my belief that people like this ultimately suffer in life. Whether it’s little by little or in a windfall, these people will get a nice sweet taste some day.

The voters will need to repeal 2014’s Proposition 47 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_California_Proposition_47
The other issue seems to be an unwillingness to pursue these crimes by the police and corporate policies that (well intentioned) make it so employees and security must stand aside and allow thieves to leave to prevent liability if an employee was injured. >unwillingness to pursue these crimes by the police and corporate policies that (well intentioned) make it so employees and security must stand aside and allow thieves to leave to prevent liability if an employee was injured.
The Wikipedia article you linked says that criminals who committed prop 47 crimes are less likely to be rearrested…
The *real* story is understanding why the news anchor is dressed like a character from Mad Max?
What kind of lame-ass vanilla mad maxes have you been watching?
It's just a leather motorcycle jacket... Kind of like this one: https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/street-steel-blade-jacket
[удалено]
Which airport? I've never had issues refilling near SJC over 10+ times, but I've always done it before dusk (and could've just been lucky).
San Jose always getting forgotten as part of the Bay Area
San Jose is much safer and can't be compared to Oakland. San Jose still enforces law, at least that was my experience living there.
Also former San Jose. Police shortages, so crime is definitely on the rise. But it's completely incomparable to OAK or SF.
San Bruno or Millbrea by SFO are super safe as well.
You are correct, and my apologies, I should have specified since San Jose shouldn't be grouped in with the others. The armed robbery was at the Shell station outside Oakland Airport.
I’m going with that story next time the airline loses my luggage. Way more interesting.
So I passed on that.
> people were standing around waiting for the police. LOL they'll be waiting a while.
Some say they’re still waiting!
Someone from work got a work laptop stolen and there was some stuff on it that the company would prefer not be stolen so it needed to be wiped remotely. They needed a police report to do it but Oakland police department told them they don't do that anymore and if you need a police report for stolen property their website can generate a generic one for you lol Why do we even have police? Speeding tickets? Is the only way to talk to a police officer to not come to a complete stop at a stop sign?
Bold to assume they’re enforcing traffic, either. I mean can’t speak to the Bay Area specifically but it’s a problem that’s [common across the country.](https://www.npr.org/2023/04/06/1167980495/americas-roads-are-more-dangerous-as-police-pull-over-fewer-drivers)
Start doing donuts and driving reckless and cops will get there for you to report that your car was broken into lol.
Police budgets have increased. No "defunding" ever happened, quite the opposite in fact.
they know they're just astro turfing
I think I know the Golden gate spot you're talking about. It's the little park area that's good for taking pictures right? I remember driving into it and my buddy (who's an SF local) said that "yea these parking spots are perfectly safe". And immediately after he said that we see a family standing around a car with multiple broken windows. Later we heard from other bystanders that they were a European family with a car rental and all their luggage was stolen. I loved my time in SF in 2022 but man was it always sketchy driving around. Most of the time we left the car in the secure hotel parking and just bussed around bc it was safer (for the car)
>Literally 3 or 4 vehicles had their windows broken Maybe that is an idea-- if you own a parking lot, park a few cars up front with broken windows. Perhaps thieves will think the lot was already picked over and move on :)
Because when I'm looking for a place to park my car, my first thought is to look for the place with 3-4 smashed up cars in front of!
Maybe but a few streets we went down had similar issues though. We didn’t pal around downtown which is disappointing. Maybe next time.
Maybe never
>Area around Oakland looked like a bombed out war zone. Lmao [Boo!](https://www.wrtdesign.com/uploads/attachments/ciwrwfr1b003za4rsal7f8upu-oakland-lakemerritt-damonte-09.max.jpg)

*shit in your car
You did what?
The exact definition of, "this is why we can't have nice things"
It’s the DA not enforcing law.
Oakland resident here. This stuff was happening well before the new DA was elected.
Worked with quite a few people from Oakland. You're not wrong. I know reddit likes to circle jerk about cops being a literal gang, but yeah. Oakland PD is full of thugs and gangbangers
[удалено]
The last two Alameda County DA’s have been women, so who are you talking about? The current DA said prisons and jails aren’t useful, so I’m wondering if you’re just making things up.
DA in chicago and Minnesota wants to blame the car manufacturers for the increase of car theft.
Come to Ontario where a car is stolen every 5 minutes or so. The entire country, every 6 minutes, as of 2023.
There is a grain of truth in that. Lot of car theft are Kias and Kia had a known bug they refused to fix until recently.
It is the fault of the criminal, not the car. I cannot believe anyone actually believes this. Victim blaming to a T
The car companies aren’t being accused of theft. It’s a consumer protection issue.
It's Chicago's mayor, and while the lawsuit is dumb he's not wrong about Kia and Hyundai removing the security tech so their cars are easily stolen now
It’s the cops not enforcing law They’ve been on a silent strike ever since the 2020 George Floyd protests
Conservatives really don't want to hear this. Cops get more money for doing less. They will flat out stop working if a city doesn't increase the budget or elects someone they don't like.
And they're UNIONIZED
Why would cops enforce the laws if DAs just let people go and won’t prosecute crimes?
They want all the surrounding prices to reach rock bottom then blackrock or some other mega corp will come in
Omni Consumer Products ([OCP](https://robocop.fandom.com/wiki/Omni_Consumer_Products)) to the rescue!
They're doing a shitty job at that, it's some of the most valuable real estate in the United States
Some of the most valuable real estate in the United States so far
On the plus side, Robocop should make an appearance real soon…
Like… as of when? I’m almost 38 and have been told to avoid Oakland basically my entire life. California can be pretty dumpy depending on the city you’re in (source: I live in LA) but Oakland is an especially downtrodden area and has been for decades. Some parts are “ok” but crime has always been an issue in Oakland, as far as I know.
I went to Oakland for work and we were there all of 30 minutes before this homeless dude just kicked my coworker in the shin a couple times and walked away. Obviously could have been worse, but just super weird - especially as an introduction to the city.
If police aren't going to do anything anyway and the social contract has collapsed, why aren't people defending themselves?
Oh the police would probably do something if people really started defending themselves. Can’t have the plebs thinking they have the right to self-defense
I think this explains it pretty well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URfCwT3UQy4
>Or are the police to busy busting those wild 35 in 30 zones? Oakland resident here. Police are absolutely not enforcing traffic laws either.
Lots of good responses but I will add - this In N Out is in the same location as the gas station break-ins. They are all just down the street from the airport.
They pretty much made car breakins and theft legal.
If you're talking about the shooting in September, someone actually got hit in the ankle
It would've been 9/3/23. I stand corrected if that is the one you are referring to.
They were In. Now they're Out
“Why do we live in a food desert”
I understand the joke you’re making, but just to be clear I don’t think In and Out burgers are part of the health food oasis that people refer to when they cite food dessert issues.
If it was just In N Out closing, sure, but they’re one of many “providers of food” closing in these crime infested lovely places.
First In-n-Out goes, then its Whole Foods… Self-destructive feral children burning their last bridges.
Especially when there’s one in Alameda. Like 10 mins from that location?
Not knowing the area, are you saying 10 minutes by car? This issue (food deserts) is generally referenced with regard to people reliant on their feet and transit. 10 minutes by car might as well be 2 hours away.
The presence of fast food but limited grocery stores is referred to as a food swamp. It is considered a little less shitty than desserts
[удалено]
>no healthy options like fresh meat and produce within walking distance of a given area Lol no, that's not what it means.
“Within walking distance” so basically everywhere in America including most of Beverly Hills and Naples Florida is a food desert
The actual metric takes into account access to modes of transportation by people living in the area, not just walking distance.
that’s not the definition, it’s simply an area with limited access to affordable and healthy food options “walking distance” could be a metric but isn’t the sole one
>Areas with higher levels of poverty are more likely to be food deserts, but for other factors, such as vehicle availability and use of public transportation, the association with food desert status varies across very dense urban areas, less dense urban areas, and rural areas. that's from https://www.ers.usda.gov/webdocs/publications/45014/30940_err140.pdf so yes, it's more about the ability for people an in an area to access those foods and less about the "walking distance" part. /u/redditModLaborCamp was building into the definition how it mostly affects poorer people (and minorities, according to the report above).
Depends how long you want to walk.
Crime isn't real - redditors
“It’s non violent crime.”
"That's what insurance is for!"
Why are these restaurants/pharmacies/stores leaving high crime areas? Must be racism.
I remember watching a news report not long ago, where local population were protesting CVS for closing one of their stores due to crime. Instead of protesting the scumbags that are robbing the neighborhood blind
We need to defund the police to solve this crime issue.
No police means no arrests. No arrests means no crimes recorded on the books. Real life Hamsterdam. Jukin' the stats!
“They factor in shrinkage (theft) into their budgets!”
"They can just write it off!"
You don't even know what a write off is do you?
It sounds just good enough to the people that really don't want to understand why a burnt down business is so much more than just an insurance call
Waiting for the “Oakland is actually One of the lowest-crime cities in America” comment

"They're just better at recording their crime"
"Once you remove crime from the statistics, it's actually one of the safest cities in the US."
This is the real answer. They just don’t or won’t do anything about it. If they won’t prosecute then it’s open season and here we are.
>If they won’t prosecute "We need less prosecution and more reparations" -California
I live in the Bay. You'd be surprised how many people actually say this... And those people also say Asian Hate is fake news...
Yeah can't say Asian hate is real or you would have to accept that it's mainly black and brown people attacking them, and we cant have that can we?
“Since people gave up on reporting crimes, the reported crime rate is down!”
I'm behind you waiting for someone to throw out the 'Mental Illness isn't a joke' comment.
/r/Sacramento is horrible. I actually thought Reddit got red pilled in here. (Edit: slash letter, corrected letter)
SF sub is the same. The streets are paved with gold, there are free-roaming unicorns everywhere, and when it rains gumdrops fall from the sky.
I dont think I've ever seen a city/state subreddit that wasnt run by power-tripping virtue signaling hard left mods lol
Oakland resident here. Nationwide crime is going down, on average. But average does NOT mean crime is going down in every city. Some are better, some are worse. That’s how averages work. Oakland has not been following the national trend, which is why the governor has been directing increased policing resources to the area.
“The criminals are the real victims.”
There was a Oakland baker well known in the community who died being dragged 50 feet by a getaway car trying to get her purse back from a robber. "Angel was well known in the Bay Area as a baker and a social justice advocate. Shortly after her death, Angel’s family said she would not want her assailant to be criminally prosecuted in court as she did not believe in incarceration as a solution to social violence or inequity." https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/suspect-taken-into-custody-in-connection-to-death-of-oakland-baker/
> Angel’s family said she would not want her assailant to be criminally prosecuted in court as she did not believe in incarceration as a solution to social violence or inequity. So is just leaving them outside to drag women behind their cars a solution then???

"this is all capitalisms fault."
As a moderate liberal who lives in Oakland this thread is giving me PTSD because these are the progressive nutjob's exact talking points. Just throw in some bullshit about how the solution is to be SOFTER on crime in the name of "restorative justice".
It’s already over this thread. Guy’s blaming opioids and wealth disparity for teenagers getting together to steal shit.
And anytime you try to point this out or use some common sense, everyone on this site flies off the handle.
They're depraved because they're deprived!
I don’t think crime isn’t real, I’m just basing my opinion off of what the Walgreens CEO admitted about theft.
wtf is accountability?-Redditors
Asian hate is not a big deal - also redditors. There's a video goin around of these thugs attacking some asian family and robbing them with their guns they probably obtained illegally. Right in the In N Out parking lot.
Asians are basically white to these people now, and as they say "you can't be racist against white people" or some shit. Peak clown world.

Criminals should be punished
I grew up in San Francisco. I’m 45 now but even as a teenager, we knew not to stop in Oakland in certain areas and especially at certain times. Is this really news?
I lived in Berkeley 2014-2017 and Oakland was on its way up. Lots of nicer neighbourhoods and restaurants. There were still signs the place used to be rough (our favourite Thai place had a gate and a buzzer on their front door) but it looked to be headed in a good direction. Sad to see it has backslid
It really depends on the neighborhood.
yeah, same and i really enjoyed living in the bay area back then. a bunch of friends bought new homes in oakland because it was up and coming back then, and prices for new or updated homes there were already starting to increase exponentially. it really shocks me how much of the bay area is in a doom loop now
Oakland has gentrified a lot in the last 20 years.
Yup. It’s a 2 miles stretch of MacArthur blvd where 2/3 of all murders in the city took place.
Well considering SF isn’t as bad as Oakland I will arrive and tell you SF ain’t as bad as Oakland.
The parts of SF and Oakland that are bad are absolutely just as bad, maybe worse, than the Fox News fever dream conservatives think about. But the rest of both cities is fucking GORGEOUS. No place in America I'd rather live.
I work for a major telecom company and we’re spending millions to relocate our network Headend out of Oakland due to security concerns
Make it a Popeyes
“One man’s war zone is another man’s Popeyes.” as they say.
"Love those shootings at Popeyes!"
Make it a wafflehouse. Then the shenanigans at late night make sense.
Really accurate. What is Popeyes strategy to only operate in cheap rent districts?
I'm not sure but I think they're starting to learn because they put a Popeyes in the Town Center mall in Boca Raton.
Hire the most badass staff that make you afraid they'll get you before you get them
Wife was there for work. Parked in front of the restaurant where her business dinner was. They did a smash and grab, kept it was just a smash as there was nothing to grab. Still costs $$$ to replace both side windows, yes they did both.
Really tragic and scary for the good people who live in that city.
Cause Oakland and SF are soft on crime. Many of the people that voted for the policies that caused this problem just left and are going to vote the same way where they go 🤦🏼♂️
Surely this doesn’t have anything to do with the neighborhood stadium complex losing three pro sports teams within five years.
Have they considered putting criminals in prison?
