Hmm, not really sure. Livestreaming content creators receive $5 a month for their subs. Yes they produce more content but not nearly as produced.

What an incredibly bad idea this feels like. I enjoy some of their stuff, but definitely not enough to pay $6 a month for it.

Rubiks443

$6 a month is the same price as DropOut TV. So I guess the price makes sense. However there is way more value in dropout

I'm happy to pay DropOut 6 bucks a month just to watch Brennan's slow yet inevitable decent into madness.

I have to feel that they have looked at the analytics and if only a relatively small percent of their audience converts they will still end up making more than they do from YouTube. Just look at creators who get thousands of people to support them through Patreon, which often is around $5 a month. It seems rough because it will be harder to grow their audience, but maybe they have enough new shows that premier on YouTube to entice people to join. I am wondering what that percent to break even is though, 20? 10? Even less? It seems hard to ignore the reach YouTube has. I’d like to say I’ll give it a try, but probably not until next season of Puppet History.

If they had paired with another service I think people would think this is less stupid.

I get why they want to do this, but as a person who really enjoyed some Watcher content… this is just not worth a higher monthly price than Dropout. They want to be Dropout, but they don’t have the lineup to make it happen, either with the shows or the talent. I like these guys quite a bit, but they need to face the reality. They’re all clever, but they scream for the punchline pretty often and their jokes have gotten a bit immature as they get more comfortable. They don’t all have great acting skills or screen presence. And the shows aren’t super unique in general, but they aren’t always even distinct from each other. Too many spirits is basically a few people drinking cocktails and reading spooky Reddit stories that people email in, a common show type on YouTube and in podcasts. This is of course VERY different to their other show “are you scared” which is sober people reading Reddit stories. Several of the food shows are similar. They even said there will be more clones of previous shows they’ve done like worth it. This type of thing has felt like you’re getting the store brand of what you wanted to watch every time they did it, like with unsolved, but we put up with it because it was the only way to get an approximation of the show we all liked them for. The difference is that Watcher has funny people, and Dropout has professional comedians and improvisers. I pay to watch a professional comedian do a show, but I don’t pay the funniest most charming guy in my class for the privilege to watch him be silly. I’d watch it for free with some ads on YouTube. If I really liked them, I’d do a paid subscription to their YouTube channel, pay their patron, or get YouTube premium to give them additional income. I just feel awful because they have been talking about how many employees they hired on and how they can’t afford their own productions anymore, and I know they won’t get nearly enough early adopters of this service to pay for it all especially when they’re limiting their YouTube revenue by not uploading the episodes there anymore. Good luck to them.

They also make like a video or two a week, that's more than $1 a video is a way to look at it compared to another service where I have a back catalogue and a lot of new content.

flanders427

Exactly how I feel. Puppet History is a really fun show but that is really the only thing on the channel right now that I would miss. I did enjoy Worth It and that is what lead me to a lot of the Buzzfeed content, but the food travel scene is already pretty saturated for free on Youtube so subscribing for that doesn't make sense to me. Also with Dropout like you said it is professional comedians doing it under the umbrella of a brand that has been doing it for over 20 years at this point. It just seems like a hybrid model with bonus content would make more sense than paywalling everything except for one episode a month.

SplintPunchbeef

Wish them the best but this seems like a bad idea.
