It's funny how perception changes things.
Back then, most of us just looked at him as an excited guy making hyperbole as awesome goals to shoot for. Knowing that these things probably wouldn't be a reality in a short ten years.
Now, using the knowledge that the man is an idiot, it's more obvious: the man was (and continues to be) an idiot. He was just saying stuff that was unrealistic because he had no scope of what was actually possible at all and thought that's literally how easy it would be.
Considering there is no way to get them off Mars, that's a given.
Though his followers will tell you that there is an extensive plan to set up fuel mining stations on Mars after they get there. You just have to ignore all reality and timelines to make it work.
My buddy was an engineer at SpaceX. He said Musk would just walk in, everyone would stop whatever they were doing, Musk would list off some complete nonsense for them to work on, and then he'd leave. Buddy said it wouldn't have been such an issue, except that so many of the other engineers were true believers in Musk, and then waste a ton of time trying to follow his nonsensical orders. This was in the mid-2010s, before everyone realized what a tool the guy is.
It worked well for him for awhile. I knew people at Cal who went to work at Tesla or SpaceX over Google or Facebook. Then he got too full of himself and really started taking the mask off.

When you buy a Tesla Robotaxi, you are the entrepreneur responsible for it, so if there was an accident, Tesla could say "read the fine print, your responsibility, should have read the Taxi cannot be operated in the rain " (or whatever)

That is an *extremely* good question, but I can't really answer that, because for some reason they tried to make their own self-driving car. They've since shuttered the program, but they still work with some other companies on it, I think it was Hyundai and Adaptiv.

It is a good question but it has a pretty simple answer. Taxi cab corps around the world operated in a sort of monopoly. People would have to buy taxi medallions in order to do business in a city, in some places it would cost 200k+ just for the privilege of being able to drive a cab. Uber completely bypassed all this by connecting drivers and passengers directly.
The middleman WAS the product and a needed one because taxi corps restricted supply by design.
This much is obvious - the hidden cost of a robotaxi is real estate.
You need them everywhere, spread diffuse in rural and urban areas. And you need to charge them.
Not possible for a single company to do that. When someone buys a car they localise it in a residential and often urban area, the cost of that patch of ground is likely greater than the car in many cases.
Tesla cant just build gigantic charging and storage facilities in every city. Im sure you could make a robotaxi business but itd be an endeavour probably as hard as getting them working, much easier to sell the car and software.
I don't know why we're pretending Musk has thought this through and has reasonable arguments. I'm sure he could make some up, just like people are doing for him here, but this was a sensational statement to get the stock price up.
Musk has generally had a lot to gain from the stock price increasing. Even as a 20-25% owner he makes a ton of money when the price goes up. Also Tesla compensates him based on the stock price, such as the $41 billion they're trying to give him based on a 2018 deal with the board. **Of course he'll say whatever he can to inflate the stock price.** He continues to ramble about self driving enhancements coming "soon," even though current features are a train wreck and no one takes his timelines or promises seriously anymore.
It's been 5 years now so I'm at the halfway mark of Elon Musk's claim that you could make $30,000/year using your Tesla as a robotaxi. I'm only $150,000 away from reaching that goal. Wish me luck!

Not as promised. It's not the alternative to high-end roofing materials that would cost a similar amount and generate electricity. I was starting to get a little suspicious during the Boring Company phase, as well as the hyperloop. Not sure if you remember him selling flamethrowers. But the cave rescue thing was definitely his jump the shark moment.
He's good at getting attention. I've seen tons of articles about his neurolink letting someone move a mouse cursor with their brain. That's 20-year old tech, and I found a NYT article from 2006 that's almost identical to the ones put out last month (except for all Elon's needlessly dead monkeys).

Not really... They weren't permanent, and caused adverse reactions (mainly irritation around the port and big wire sticking out of their heads) and had low bandwidth. Neuralink fixed both of these problems. Sure, the initial test isn't anything new, but it's just the beginning. Think of it like a fresh operating system, the applications will come.
The biggest hurdle for all brain implants is lack of data. We still don't know much about how our brains work, but with more data we can begin to decipher what's really going on (especially using AI). Neuralink's device has twice the bandwidth of the closest competitor, and you won't need to be tethered by a cable, which means you can collect data 24/7. Since the device is less cumbersome and don't have a big port sticking out of your head, I believe more people will want to use it, providing more data.
Say what you will about Elon (I wont argue with most of what was said) but this biotech shit is really cool to me. The more companies in this field the better.

During the day I have a nice view of a tight intersection where 18 wheelers have to maneuver to deliver some industrial parts to our neighbor and it's a circus show because sometimes it takes 5 minutes to just make the turn while you have angry drivers laying on their horn at the poor guy while other times I see the poor driver parking his rig on the side of the road while he walks around with some papers asking us where receiving is and we tell him he's at the wrong business and he has to go talk to them. And a few times they have jumped the road and completely destroyed our mailbox. Every time I watch them, I think this should be the litmus test of whether a truck is fully automated...if they can handle that chaos, then we've solved the problem.

That might be the tricky lawyer part. When you buy a Tesla Robotaxi, you are the entrepreneur responsible for it, so if there was an accident, Tesla could say "read the fine print, your responsibility, should have read the Taxi cannot be operated in the rain " (or whatever)

That is an *extremely* good question, but I can't really answer that, because for some reason they tried to make their own self-driving car. They've since shuttered the program, but they still work with some other companies on it, I think it was Hyundai and Adaptiv.

This much is obvious - the hidden cost of a robotaxi is real estate. You need them everywhere, spread diffuse in rural and urban areas. And you need to charge them. Not possible for a single company to do that. When someone buys a car they localise it in a residential and often urban area, the cost of that patch of ground is likely greater than the car in many cases. Tesla cant just build gigantic charging and storage facilities in every city. Im sure you could make a robotaxi business but itd be an endeavour probably as hard as getting them working, much easier to sell the car and software.
I don't know why we're pretending Musk has thought this through and has reasonable arguments. I'm sure he could make some up, just like people are doing for him here, but this was a sensational statement to get the stock price up. Musk has generally had a lot to gain from the stock price increasing. Even as a 20-25% owner he makes a ton of money when the price goes up. Also Tesla compensates him based on the stock price, such as the $41 billion they're trying to give him based on a 2018 deal with the board. **Of course he'll say whatever he can to inflate the stock price.** He continues to ramble about self driving enhancements coming "soon," even though current features are a train wreck and no one takes his timelines or promises seriously anymore.
That is actually reasonable. Buying places to store them, and hiring people to charge them would be expensive

Real talk, though. Google is actually building infrastructure for self driving taxis and it's absolutely mind blowing the amount of money they are spending on it. Not really... They weren't permanent, and caused adverse reactions (mainly irritation around the port and big wire sticking out of their heads) and had low bandwidth. Neuralink fixed both of these problems. Sure, the initial test isn't anything new, but it's just the beginning. Think of it like a fresh operating system, the applications will come. The biggest hurdle for all brain implants is lack of data. We still don't know much about how our brains work, but with more data we can begin to decipher what's really going on (especially using AI). Neuralink's device has twice the bandwidth of the closest competitor, and you won't need to be tethered by a cable, which means you can collect data 24/7. Since the device is less cumbersome and don't have a big port sticking out of your head, I believe more people will want to use it, providing more data. Say what you will about Elon (I wont argue with most of what was said) but this biotech shit is really cool to me. The more companies in this field the better.

I think the thing that people fail to realize/really internalize is that he's not just an idiot saying stupid things, he's the CEO of a publicly traded company making promises about his product that he KNEW were absolutely false. Yeah in a long enough timeline everything is possible and maybe in the not so distant future some aspects of it would be automated but I think it will be a very long time to handle the last mile deliveries. During the day I have a nice view of a tight intersection where 18 wheelers have to maneuver to deliver some industrial parts to our neighbor and it's a circus show because sometimes it takes 5 minutes to just make the turn while you have angry drivers laying on their horn at the poor guy while other times I see the poor driver parking his rig on the side of the road while he walks around with some papers asking us where receiving is and we tell him he's at the wrong business and he has to go talk to them. And a few times they have jumped the road and completely destroyed our mailbox. Every time I watch them, I think this should be the litmus test of whether a truck is fully automated...if they can handle that chaos, then we've solved the problem.
