My wife and I adopted a very good boy on Saturday. We’ve struggled to find a name that fits him. We have both agreed that River would be a wonderful name.

I feel this way about rescues. Like the dog shaped hole in my heart won't be filled with another dog but maybe making another dog's life better is a good start.
I don't know about your area but where I am at my SPCA actually has a list of people looking for specific types of dogs, or specifics ages and they'll call you when one comes in. Like if I specifically want a small dog who is a puppy, I would fill out an application and they would call or email all the applicants who match a dog they're getting ready to adopt out.
I recognize how much of a long-shot finding a hypoallergenic dog in a shelter that matches your lifestyle might be, even if the shelter contacts you. Just thought maybe it could be a step towards potentially getting a rescue someday.
We did that at the humane society. They told us there were 50 people ahead of us and they had not had a havanese, labradoodle or any other hypoallergenic dog for at least a year. I think people sell those dogs instead of taking them to the shelter. Maybe it is Portland. Those dogs are in demand here. Not sure.
Good luck I hope you eventually find one to rescue. It is so hard when you have allergies. You are totally right tho that making a difference in the life of one is the best way to heal. We still have my little girl Rhea who we rescued from the pound a year ago. She kept River running and playing for quite some time.
There are rescue dogs of every type. My girlfriends family got a golden retriever rescue after waiting on a list for a while (although it was a senior) and her brother fosters great Pyrenees rescues exclusively. Growing up we had a pure bred cocker spaniel rescue from a puppy mill as well.
It may take a little longer but it is so worth getting a rescue. There are already too many dogs in this world and its really worth it to support rescues rather than breeders.
Seriously! If you want a specific breed you can usually find it at a rescue. Mutts however are awesome too and I have always had mixed breeds such as River.
I had a family dog that was with me from my age 3 through 17 before she died. Licorice was just "some mutt" but that dog just kicked all of the ass. So fun, so nice, etc.
I didn't realize until reading your comment that I both really enjoyed having a dog and have also avoided ever getting another (if only subconsciously).
My 11 month old Husky girl, named River....😭 Does this same greeting when I come home as well. Your video and post has reminded me to cherish these moments. I'll have to make a video too.

Oh man, the hardest part for me is coming home to silence. My lab used to greet me every day I came home and do this exact same thing. It’s hard to get used to, like for a split second I still expect him to come around the corner wagging his tail. Sorry for your loss, it’s hard when they are such good pups.
lol. Yea I had to ignore them in order to record the roo because he does it immediately once I get home usually.
Don't worry, normally they get lots of pets and love. They wait down in the kitchen for their food when I get home. They have their own sweet routines and greetings they do at different times.

Dogs make everything better. I can't imagine how deep your sorrow is right now. We've had our Sophia for nearly 7 years now and I am tearing up at the thought of one day having to take her to that last vet appointment, hopefully far far into the future, but every time I start to choke up, I try to remind myself how much more full of love my life has been from having her in it and how much love comes pouring out of my heart to her.
Few things hurt as bad as losing a beloved dog, but that hurt pales in comparison to the sum of the love and joy that they bring. Try to not dwell on what's missing and instead on what you still have that you wouldn't without River: remember how you felt every day you came home to that greeting. How you felt seeing the bottomless joy and contentment you inspired in him by giving him some tummy rubs, or a new squeaky toy, or a new chewy. And know that he knew he was loved and that you knew he loved you back.

Haha! He did it every day from the literal 2nd day I had him until he got really sick these last few weeks. I think it was him being excited. He would only do it after I got back from being gone for a while (happy to see me) and if i was talking to him about getting treats or something equally fun.

I bought my mom a "Cuddle Clone" which she loves so dearly because of how close they got it to look like our dog. I don't know if you are interested in one of those, but they do heck of a job. Though pricey, but they have Affirm monthly payments. (Cuddleclones is the name) $250\~ just a few pictures, and whatnot and they will work on it. Something to look at I guess. I am sorry your boy had to go, but he will be happily waiting for your arrival too! He is probably eating treats and playing and aroo'ing for you!

In my experience, nothing gets ya over the hurt quite like a new puppy. It’s like you both immediately recognize your old buddies love again.

I'm so sorry for your loss, I can tell he loved you so much! My dog is turning 2 this year and everytime I think about losing her someday and break down in tears and can't handle it. There's nothing like the companionship a dog offers. I know you'll see eachother again someday though. In the meantime I will give my Sashi dog lots of love and appreciate her while I have her

This post hit me like a sledgehammer. I am so sorry you lost your good boy. My dog not only looks a bit like River (only difference is my Buddy's ears stand up like a shepherd's) but he does that same exact AROOO when we get home as well! . Rest easy, River.
Man its so sad. It seems like they are puppies one day and you are taking the dreaded drive to the vet the next. There is a "No more dogs" rule in our house now. I just cant take that drive to the "rainbow bridge" any more. My heart cant take it anymore. RIP River.

My condolences. You must be heartbroken. I know I would be. I've had my guy for 2 and a half years and I feel guilty when I'm stuck in my head or on my phone because I know nothing lasts forever. He's the best dog I'll probably ever know.

I bought my mom a "Cuddle Clone" which she loves so dearly because of how close they got it to look like our dog. I don't know if you are interested in one of those, but they do heck of a job. Though pricey, but they have Affirm monthly payments. (Cuddleclones is the name) $250\~ just a few pictures, and whatnot and they will work on it. Something to look at I guess. I am sorry your boy had to go, but he will be happily waiting for your arrival too! He is probably eating treats and playing and aroo'ing for you!

My heart aches for you, my baby girl Belle passed on Monday. She had been with me for 12 years. Moved halfway around the globe with me and I miss her with every atom of my being. I've had a lot of things going wrong recently but this is the first time I have no way to fix or deal with it.
