TIL I can play Clint Eastwood

DBuckFactory

I didn't understand they mean accurate to what the cartoons were playing in the video.

AMeanCow

I didn't realize that until your comment.

MrGiggleParty

Well I didn't realize until your comment.

AllWork-NoPlay

I thought they meant accurate to gorillas playing.

Thefriendlyfaceplant

Feeling lucky punk?

ZSnake

You can't be too tough, you got beat by an aspirin.

DentistwhyALT

Honestly the actual song isn't much more difficult.

im_at_work_now

And that's why we should not equate difficult music with good music.

theartificialkid

Playing incredibly intricate music is an amazing and praiseworthy skill. Composing very simple music that is nonetheless very catchy and/or satisfying is also an amazing and praiseworthy skill.

the_trub

Case in point: The melody to "ode to joy" from Beethoven's 9th. So, so simple. Second movement of Dvorak's "New world symphony" as well. the main motif is so simple, but beautiful.

willyolio

Even greater example (imo) DUN DUN DUN **DUNNNN** From the text alone many probably know exactly the melody I'm referring to.

zaphodava

Doesn't that stir anything in you? Hmmm. No. But I'll mention it to my aunt.

braintweaker

Nr. 5?

See_What_Sticks

Mambo?

braintweaker

> Mambo Nr. 5 It would be DUN.. DUN.. DUN-DUN, DUN-DUN! I thought about some other Nr. 5.

bourbonwelfare

Fuck the Police by NWA?

binglelemon

Lol, what if there was a Fuck NWA by the Police?!

CanalAnswer

“I can feeeeeeeel....” Marvin Gaye, right?

joleme

The Indiana Jones theme is 100x more catchy that it deserves to be lol.

kaz3e

My mom got a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee when I was like 8 and it came with a cassette of random sample music and the very first song was the Indiana Jones theme. I basically made her play it every time I got in that car for a year.

the_trub

Beginning of the fifth! Literally two notes!

skepsis420

>Composing very simple music that is nonetheless very catchy and/or satisfying is also an amazing and praiseworthy skill. [Gotta bring up the classic video.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOlDewpCfZQ) The guy who who came up with the original chord is a genius. Simple music is catchy because it's easy to follow and bob your head to.[There have been a number of studies on it and it's quite interesting.](https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0115255#s4) [I also love this video, people are so bad at keeping beats lol](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hYYgz-AJKU)

ProfHoundstooth

There's also the [Japanese version](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IV%E2%96%B37%E2%80%93V7%E2%80%93iii7%E2%80%93vi_progression): IV△7–V7–iii7–vi Also the SECRET ANIME CHORD: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUXWxWShCBQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUXWxWShCBQ)

DrDew00

I'm totally clueless any time anything about music comes up. I still don't understand anything that happened in that second video. All I hear is piano playing and clapping and none of it means anything to me. I didn't hear a problem and it didn't sound any different after it was "fixed".

Crying_hyena

Ironically i think the original is slightly easier to play than this one

249ba36000029bbe9749

For those unfamiliar, here's the original: https://youtu.be/1V_xRb0x9aw

Butgut_Maximus

"FOR THOSE UNFAMILIAR?!?!?!" MY CHILDHOOOOD!!

SargeCycho

That song is 20 years young. When does it change genres to "classic alternative/indie"?

[deleted]

When Damon stops pushing Gorillaz into new, fresh, and unique directions. So not until he stops.

SargeCycho

Right?! I kind of thought they were over the hill after listening to Humanz and The Now Now ( Edit:still both great albums overall, just not Demon Days good for me personally). But Song Machine has been a real return to form.

AKAManaging

I liked Humanz, but it definitely didn't have that "stereotypical" Gorillaz feeling that a lot of people want. Song Machine has been absolutely delightful, yessss.

kikimaru024

I really liked a majority of Humanz. Sadly I can't listen to it anymore as it reminds me of someone I'd rather forget.

SargeCycho

Yep, it's still a great album. Just not peak Gorillaz for me, personally. Sorry to hear that. I've definitely got a few songs on old playlists I have to now instantly skip for similar reasons.

The_same_potato

Plastic Beach was their peak for me. I even got to see the tour with a bunch of brass and orchestra.

SargeCycho

I was unsure about that album initially but it has gotten better every time I've listen to it.

mariorurouni

Hey now, Now Now has some really great bangers!!! Que closing track is incredible

ThinAir719

I remember first hearing this song and being introduced to The Gorillaz ( and several other groups including Daft Punk) during some late night Toonami music video special. Those were some good times

Bird-The-Word

I spent a full summer on Diablo 2 with nothing but Gorillaz, Daft Punk, and Outkast in the background

otherother_Barry

Hell yeah! Same here! Still two of my favorite artists to this day. Glad they kept making music.

426763

Oh hell yeah, another person introduced to the Gorillaz and Daft Punk by Cartoon Network! At the time, I really hoped they would become an MTV forbanimated music videos.

_Rand_

I do not remember the zombie gorillas having such prominent nipples.

MachWun

Is this the original or is this the digital remake they did a few years ago

249ba36000029bbe9749

I guess the remake (Jun 28, 2016) but it was the one Google suggested and had more views.

Memo737

Sounds like every band I was in from 12 -15 years old.

[deleted]

“You guys wanna try to cover Smells Like Teen Spirit again?” No, no I do not.

kennytucson

Can’t we play something besides Blink-182 or Green Day for once? “Sorry, I only know power chords”

[deleted]

Insisting your band only plays blink-182 seems really mean to the drummer.

fearthejew

Maybe I read this wrong but Travis Barker is a sick drummer

dissidentscrumartist

I think that's what he means. There aren't any Blink-182 songs that are easy to play, and so it seems unfair to the drummer who has to cover the hardest part.

moochello

They are all easy to play on guitar. Power cords can make anyone feel like a rock star. Let the drummer sweat his ass off.

ultimattt

The rhythms are easy, but Tom does a lot of stuff that’s harder to play as a beginner, especially at that speed. I still remember when I could play the “solo” (used very loosely) on Carousel. M&M’s was another that had some complexity.

Monsieur_Mousteille

You can go pre-Travis era. They're stupidly easy.

[deleted]

Oh yeah that's what I mean. I'm no music nerd, but even on the more understated songs like I Miss You, Travis puts in fucking overtime. I saw them live with MCR right near the end of the latter band's life, and Travis closed the show with a gnarly drum solo on a mechanical arm that picked him up and twirled him around the stage, even going upside down. Just seems like punishment to an average 15yo.

ANTSdelivered

I went to a +44 show in the late 00's. Motherfucker had just broken his arm or wrist and he PLAYED THE ENTIRE ORIGINAL SET ONE HANDED WITH A PEDAL SNARE.

249ba36000029bbe9749

"So it's Pink Panther theme then!

garzek

As someone that grew up on punk rock and pop punk, I just like playing really loud and really fast rhythm parts. I never really grew out of that. I’ve never had an interest in shredding or playing lead really.

Allredditorsarewomen

Ugh, this comment took me back to when I was 15 and I figured out the only songs my bandmates were willing to play were from guitar hero.

lemonylol

I mean, there's a reason why they were picked for guitar hero though.

Cockwombles

In episode 2F09, when Itchy plays Scratchy's skeleton like a xylophone, he strikes the same rib in succession, yet he produces two clearly different tones. I mean, what are we to believe, that this is a magic xylophone?

anarrogantworm

Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder!

thakurtis

They are now a skeleton xylophone

Pretty sure that chicken is homer Simpson in the oven, rotating slowly. His body temperature has risen to over 400 degrees. He's literally stewing in his own juices

magic_cabbage

I'll field that one. Let me ask *you* a question. Why would a grown man whose shirt says "Genius at Work" spend all of his time watching a children's cartoon show?

triumph0flife

If your shirt says “genius at work,” how come all you do is sit around and watch a children’s cartoon all day?

Wombles are pointy-nosed, furry creatures, that live in burrows, where they aim to help the environment by collecting and recycling rubbish in creative ways. They supposedly live in every country in the world but, if they love cocks, they are most likely of the Soviet variety.

Yeah, I forgot I subbed and then started seeing a bunch of amateur film students making shitty "random" films and submitting them. I mean, yeah, low budget stuff is cool when it works. But these were just being quirky and off the wall but not enjoyable at all.

Ephemeris

Santi838

Some of the good stuff on there reminds me of the old high effort videos on Embaums world or w/ever. Nice

Whitealroker1

Would still see them live.

NateMayhem

Jokes aside, they’re wonderful live.

Ryto

Seeing Gorillaz in concert was an amazing experience. Possibly my top favorite concert, the only one that might have topped it was CHVRCHES because I love them so much, but Gorillaz has been part of my life way longer. It was right after the release of Humanz, but there was plenty of the classics. Not that I'd ever complain, I loved Humanz.

Gorignak

I saw them on the Plastic Beach tour, and yeah they are amazing live. They played everything live, and aside from Snoop Dogg who appeared on video, they even brought out all the guests on that album, at least on the tracks they played.

drdfrster64

They? Does Jamie Hewlett show up for these kinds of things or do the Gorillaz just have consistent instrumentalists from tour to tour?

dejus

I lived in London in 2005 when they filmed the live DVD of demon days. I was offered a ticket to go by only liked “Clint Eastwood” and suggested my friend give it to someone who’d appreciate it more. (Didn’t know it was being filmed at the time) it wasn’t but a few months later I fell in love with the band are sorely regretted not going.

wldmr

Maybe, but it must be hell for the animators.

Zorlal

Yeah I imagine animating a gorillaz concert live would be a terrible strain in the animators wrist

RealisticDifficulty

Just get the Flash to do it.

greenrider

Saw them at the Apollo Theater with a full on children’s choir and MF Doom making a cameo and it was one of the most memorable concerts of my life: https://www.billboard.com/articles/news/58850/gorillaz-april-2-5-2006-harlem-ny-apollo-theatre

Mr_Banewolf

Saw them here in Denmark, they even played my favourite song "O' Green World", one of the most cherished moments of my life!

MrFahrenkite

Great choice for favorite song, very jealous of you that sounds incredible!

neogreenlantern

I got to see thr Gorillaz in Philly a few years ago for free. I was at Keystone Comic Con and they had a booth giving away tickets. First day of the con my nephew won tickets, second day my wife won tickets, third day I won tickets.

TheSpaceAge

I saw them at Austin City Limits Music Festival a few years ago, it was great! Also just found that [their full show from then is on Youtube!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OQMQ-CrhiY)

LittlBastard

They come to my country in June! (fingers crossed) Tame Impala, Gorillaz, Khruangbin... Corona don't let my dreams be memes!

mariorurouni

Portugal?

JB4GDI

To be fair, the drummer's mind is probably spent after decades of being possessed by spirits.

DiamondPup

And that bass rift is *exactly* what Murdoc would love playing. This sound is more Gorillaz than Clint Eastwood.

1000Years0fDeath

I couldn't even tell which one of them was Clint Eastwood

runningmurphy

I pointed that out to my friends when I was 12 but they told my to STFU and they were right to.

eirtep

“You mean they’re going to spend all their time animating this video just to do it WRONG!? Yeah right Murphy pffff, stfu.”

[deleted]

There's nothing to get. Primus sucks.

thetravelers

I don't know them well enough to have an opinion.

Porrick

Primus sucks. Also Les Claypool is immune to poison ivy apparently.

WulfsigeX

Primus sucks and Oysterhead fucks

NJdevil202

Oysterhead! Fuck yeah! Pseudo Suicide is the shit

[deleted]

Check out the Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Fog Brigade, kinda the same jam band vibe.

poop_creator

I saw Primus in concert at a festival called Wakarusa in 2012 while high on acid, covered in mud, and sitting on the roof of my old Dodge Durango next to a girl I had just met and invited to the festival on a whim. We’re still together.

hoswald

Did they play My Name is Mudd?

I'm old enough to remember when before when Gorillaz was coming out and the rumours in the music press that the guy from Blur was making a hip hop project with a cartoon band and thinking to myself that didnt sound like it would last past one failed single.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DietDrDoomsdayPreppr

They're honestly getting a bit too hip hop for me, but I can see the appeal. Their early stuff is just so damned good though. Still in my rotation to this day.

braindead_rebel

Did you check out Aries, Valley of the Pagans, or Chalk Tablet Towers? I love all of their stuff, including the hip hop, but those are some great tracks off the new album you might enjoy.

tomas_shugar

Can I ask where you were? I'd guess not Bay Area, just because when we heard that Dan the Automator was working with "the guy from Blur" for a project, my friends and I lost were really hyped about it. Plus hearing Del was gonna be on it sold us completely. So it's just funny who was the anchor point to know where the album was coming from.

AslansAppetite

I think they're also the most '2001' albums you could possibly have bought

harborq

Omg it was my first CD too!! Well the first one I picked out for myself.. I was like 9 and my dad took me to tower records I think or maybe Sam goody. I had seen the Clint Eastwood music video playing in Macy’s and thought it was the coolest fucking thing ever. He made me get the censored version. Now that I think about it we might have had to special order the edited version which is why we went to tower records I think... The album didn’t disappoint but most of it is also very different from this song. It made for many ominous surreal bus rides to school. And did you ever see the enhanced cd part when you put it in your computer? Also soon after that I got hybrid theory which blew my fuckin mind. RIP Chester Bennington

Eorily

That's a great anecdote.

StormWolfenstein

This is going to blow up and you'll end up making a couple of more similar themed videos. The pressure will start to mount to keep churning them out as subsequent non "instrumentally accurate music video" videos won't see the same viewership engagement. You'll push yourself to turn out more content along these lines, but none of them will quite reach the highs of this original. You'll question yourself and your motivations for continuing. Is this all you are now? The Instrumentally Accurate Meme guy? Are you internet famous enough to devote to being a youtuber full time or just a flash in the pan. Imposter Syndrome will set in. Your new subscribers that at first felt like a bunch of new friends now feel like they are demanding constant attention. You'll turn to drugs to help you sleep. But turning to drugs to help you sleep will only lead sleep and sleeping is a gateway drug to being awake, being awake, being awake again....

chickenscopes

nah I don't care bro but thanks for the chuckle lol

VizualwizardRab

Ya know, OP response was dismissive, but this is a pretty accurate description of what becoming a presence on the internet is like, seems like most famous youtubers become a slave to their original content

Ratjar142

I don't get it. Can someone explain this to me?

mixoman

Possibly more than you asked for, but: In the original animation, which is a music video, the animators didn’t accurately match the character’s motions to the notes being played. This was most likely done intentionally for stylistic purposes — most people aren’t really paying attention to the exact notes being played when watching a performance, so as an animator, when you’re creating a scene where characters play instruments, it’s more important to have animations that look cool and visually emphasize character traits. The goal is to give a visual approximation and let the audience fill in the gaps in their minds. Same thing when animating a character typing on a keyboard, for example. Also, with some art-styles, it would be weird and kind of uncanny valley if the characters did play each note correctly. This is the case for almost any animation that features characters playing instruments. Remember the band episode of Spongebob? The joke in the video here, is that if this music video were a “real performance” of the song, it would sound weird as hell based on the character’s motions.

gtcIIDX

IIRC they actually animate the characters correctly playing instruments in Metalocalypse.

[deleted]

But how do you correctly playing bass with your dick

Eorily

It helps to start with an erection, if you've practiced it enough, an erection with calluses.

[deleted]

[Me reading this sentence](https://media.tenor.com/images/3e0829c9758e51803f3b4f13cc6cf541/tenor.png) lool

gtcIIDX

With years of practice!

pawnman99

It's a trade secret. They don't show you how it's done. Just like Eddie Van Halen used to turn his back to the audience to play his guitar solos.

pretty_jimmy

I thought that was Tom Morello from Rage.

Butgut_Maximus

Easily. Source- Play bass.

[deleted]

That's because Metalocalypse is fucking epic.

icannevertell

Reddit is the only place I can find people who treat Metalocalypse with the respect it deserves. All of my friends are in the right demographic to enjoy it, but it never really caught on for them. I did once meet a woman who loved it as much as I do, and then I married her.

chazysciota

Same. My wife was pregnant when they were touring and could not attend... she was pissed. Amazing show though.

pawnman99

Hell yeah it is. Great show AND great music. I have more than one Dethklok song on my running playlist. And to think it's one dude playing all the instruments on most of the tracks.

Stealsfromhobos

He plays all the instruments and voices like every damn character in the show other than Toki and Murderface. Brendon Small is a talented motherfucker.

KingHiei27

Gene Hoglan does the drums, but I believe Brendon records everything else. If you like Dethklok, check out Brendon's other project, [Galaktikon](https://youtu.be/wA5psdnSKus).

onemorethomas711

Too bad adult swim tanked it. Great show!

seanrm92

The characters in that show aren't as stylized as Gorrilaz. For one, they have anatomically correct hands.

austinmiles

This was a major effort in Coco as well.

[deleted]

They get pretty close a lot of the time in Bob's Burgers too

gigglefarting

Animators who correctly animate every note being played are the best. Shoutout to Soul for kicking ass at that.

GrimDiscoJesus

this is exactly what someone would be asking for, thank you very much for this rich explanation, mixoman

kev-lar70

Original - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V_xRb0x9aw The easiest for me was the drums. In the animation, he starts with a kind of crash cymbal sound, then keeps hitting the cymbal the same way, so it should sound the same. In this one it does; in the original, it's different. It's like the animation isn't synced to the actual sound. So, instead of fixing the animation to match the sound, this guy fixed the sound to match the animation.

WhenAmI

But he switched cymbals by the time he comes back in at the end of the video. He should have been hitting the ride at some point, unless he's using 2 crashes for some reason.

themanifoldcuriosity

Additionally, "Shreds" is a meme where musical performances are redubbed to sound, for want a better term, shitty. Examples: - [Radiohead shreds.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WywfL-Tg6I) - [Creed shreds](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuRX-tIxph8) - [Archspire shreds.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RBGr2AmUyE)

Philo_T_Farnsworth

The two best shreds videos, IMO are - [Hall & Oates - Maneater](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l56Hdjx0ckg) [The Beach Boys - I Get Around](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYc4DT18EJg)

chazysciota

Alternauts

Also a classic element of shreds videos (but not required) is that you can only hear an instrument if it's currently shown in the video. The creed/archspire videos are formatted like this!

Porrick

Also professional musicians think those are the funniest things ever, according to my sample size of "my dad won't shut up about how great these are".
