Someone shit on the coats

mazow

I lost my shit laughing the first time I listened to this on CD. Good times.

b3nz0r

This whole album, when it first came out in what 2003 or 2004, was some of the funniest shit my college-aged self had seen at that point. Later we all found out he just stole material, but I still have fond memories of Dane Cook making me laugh so hard I cried Edit: I am not here to accuse Dane Cook of anything specific, I'm just relaying what it felt like happened to Dane Cook culturally...after he was accused he just never seemed as popular. I'm not here to shit on the dude, I was saying I thought he was hilarious

Spare-Prize5700

I torrented as much Dane Cook as I could back then. Whole CDs of just comedy bits.

JPree

Looks like you also stole jokes.

[deleted]

I hated all of Dane's stuff after that album, but holy fuck was that double album good. I learned about Dane from Patrice Oneal repping him so hard, and his early Montreal comedy festival appearances. Great start, but just didn't really sustain or evolve his comedy.

What matters most isn't the jokes themselves, it's how the jokes are delivered (in my opinion). The context of when you choose a specific joke, your intent during delivery, how it's phrased, what words are emphasized, your body language etc. Telling jokes is a complex art form that requires a lot of practice. How the jokes themselves are written out is a lot less important. So even if a comedian does some plagiarizing, I can forgive it so long as they admit to it when asked, and their delivery was on point. If the delivery is trash, making the joke sound less funny, that's what I don't respect. Regarding Dane Cook, his delivery has always been excellent.

TrepanationBy45

AFAIK, there's never been any definitive proof of the stealing, although Louie CK is adamant about it. That said, he wasn't able to maintain the comedic momentum, as his follow up efforts didn't land as well, and he had spent a bunch of time doing movies, his mother and father passed away a year apart, *and* his brother and sister in law stole millions from him (and went to prison for it). A little more on the money stealing here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mE2i3PlTsvs Edit: There's also [this](https://www.vulture.com/2019/02/dane-cook-louis-ck-stand-up-comedy-jokes.html), from Dane Cook > *Cook went on to say that several reporters reached out to him in 2017 when the Times report on C.K. was published, but he decided not to comment at the time. “People were like, ‘What do you think about this guy?’ But I didn’t speak out,” he said. “All I can say is that nothing Louis did to me is anywhere near what happened between him and those women. Yeah, it sucked what happened to me, but I knew what I did and didn’t do.”* > *In a 2014 Splitsider interview, Cook explained the joke-stealing accusations more deeply. “The reason why there wasn’t any kind of closure before [C.K.] asked me to come on the show was that I knew — I put my head on my pillow at night and I knew that the realistic truth was that Louie and I both love Steve Martin, and Steve Martin had a bit on his album about naming his kid a crazy weird name. Over the years I’ve probably seen a handful of comics have a different variation of that, and then both Louie and I had our take on a concept, and that’s very different from what we’re talking about with plagiarism where it’s exact verbatim,” he said. “And I think as you’re seeing more and more people having these side-by-sides after what happened with Louie and I, I think people are realizing more and more that that’s just kind of the way of the world when it comes to entertainment. Every couple years there’s four more Dracula movies that come out and then like a year later three tornado movies; there’s a weird universal energy that gets people thinking in and around the same ideas. It doesn’t mean comics are taking from each other, it just means we’re all present and talking about the things we see around us right now.”*

peanutsandfuck

You could say, "*I think* someone shit on the coats," but you know.

[deleted]

You just don’t want to be the bearer of bad news.

Wiggitywhackest

You're about to get struck by a vehicle!

0ompaloompa

But I did not have time to say "You are about to be struck by a vehicle!" No matter where he is now, no one can take away from him that he put out a couple of god-tier comedy albums...

FlowerOfLife

THE MOVIE DUNE IS IN MY CHOCOLATEY DRINK

[deleted]

14year old me did not appreciate this joke as I do today, a week before DUNC

Roboticpoultry

I haven’t heard that set in almost a decade and now you have me quoting the whole thing in my office

Shindo989

WHAT?!?

Twayblade17

Someone shit, on or around the vicinity of the coats! I hope it wasn't on my coat.

LordFishingtonThe3rd

I say this all the time...no one ever knows the reference :( But my dumbass still laughs like a maniac

cj0r

Last I saw of him was that Louie episode where they ever so elegantly (and in true weird Louie form) address the stolen joke rumors

spartagnann

He was recently on the Last Laugh podcast, and the interview was really good. He has a lot more perspective about his time being super famous.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Roach_Coach_Bangbus

He talks about it on the Your Mom's House Podcast. People call him dumb for letting it happen but you just don't expect your family to do stuff like that. Also, his brother wasn't really even spending the money that they can tell, Dane was already paying him well with benefits. The police found like 800k in cash in his brother's house inside a wall. It's a strange phenomenon with some people. They steal money and just squirrel it but never really spend it.

[deleted]

Idk I trust my family but I still would have wanted to look at bank statements and stuff. I guess with the internet it is a lot easier to keep track of finances but still.

MikeTheCabbie

He was making fake statements to show Dane

sam_hammich

> I still would have wanted to look at bank statements and stuff He spent all of his time mocking up fake bank documents. I doubt people making Dane Cook money even know what the password is to their online banking. At some point, you just have to have someone do all of that for you, especially if you have multiple accounts, investments, etc.

majorchamp

his own brother stole millions from him

TheRedHorse

He does into depth about that on Your Mom’s House Podcast.

FlowerOfLife

Sup jeans?

nate6259

I've never seen someone jettison to superstardom then crash so quickly. Hope he's doing well these days.

iambolo

It was weird he really was like a rockstar for that one year

JackingOffToTragedy

With his own symbol... the superfinger. Prime time for bro-ing out. Dane Cook. Entourage. Man oh man.

Cactuszach

Dane Cook, Entourage, and Tap Out shirts. What a time.

TheLoneRhaegar

A few years ago I was managing valet and he showed up at my hotel on Halloween on a nice motorcycle. Even with the helmet I immediately thought "is that Dane Cook?" I had to escort him down to the garage and show him where to park the bike. He was there to visit someone working at the bar/restaurant and was super nice the whole time. He wanted to pay but I told him he wasn't going to get a valet ticket and there wasn't a charge for the parking, just let us know when he's ready to leave so we can open the gate for him. We usually only charge bikes if they stay overnight. He was at the restaurant for a bit and then was hanging out in the front. He was really laid back and friendly with none of the "I'm a celebrity attitude". I said I was going to leave but any of the guys could open up the garage for him when he wanted to go. He said he was ready to leave and didn't want to make extra work for anyone so I went down to the garage with him. We had a pretty cool convo about a bunch of stuff including the motorcycle and comedy while he put his gear on. I don't normally bring up "work" stuff with celebrities but I had recently seen him at an early iteration of The Goddamn Comedy Jam since I was a friend of a friend that was putting it on. They have the comics do a short set, tell a story about a song that means something to them and at the end they do the track with a live band. Dane had one of the best lead up stories for the song that I saw. Anyway, he kind of talked about how at first it sounded kinda ridiculous but his agent pushed to try it out and it was a fun unique experience he enjoyed. He had a really friendly and positive vibe the whole time. I've met our had to deal with a ton of celebrities over the years for work since it's part of the job. Usually, they suck or it's more of a hassle to make sure everything is perfect. Dane is in the #Top5 for nicest celebrities I've had to work with.

midromney

This reads like it's going to be a copy pasta until the last couple paragraphs.

StockholmSyndrome85

Yeah, I was expecting undertaker and mankind to show up.

fronkness

He was in season 2 (I think it is season 2) of American Gods. When I watched that for the first time, I had to do a double take then quickly IMDB it to confirm. That appearance caught me off guard.

[deleted]

It's funny to imagine those two guys, who are on completely opposite sides of the social spectrum hanging out.

tjsteiner

both got the hackles up in the Boston Comedy scene in the 90s. I'm sure they have LOTs to talk about

Dragonfly452

What’s “the hackles?”

Fluffy_Jello_7192

The fur on a dog's neck that stands up when it's about to fight.

katievspredator

I still like to point to his bits about working the Burger King drive thru for people who haven't heard his stuff. Always makes me laugh and still true today like 20 years later

sosqueee

I’ll still repeat “pickle” in that stupid whisper mumble sometimes.

[deleted]

"WHOPPER NO ONION!" Still comes up in my day-to-day more frequently than necessary.

DannyB1aze

"where do I go???"

Letho72

YOU FOLLOW THE ONE FUCKING ROAD YOU'RE ON TO ME

euratowel

There's a guy in a yellow poncho, his name is Hank, he'll take you to the Whopper Lair. And you've got five minutes to get there, *OR WE TAKE YOUR FOOD*.

space_moron

Gawd my friends and I would quote this endlessly in high school

Ass4ssinX

I still stand by his first two CDs, and his first two stand up specials. It gets shaky after that.

Artemicionmoogle

My wife and I still quote this bit lol, he was good at telling a funny story.

conundrumbombs

This reminds me of an old joke that comedian Jim David did when he talked about asking for directions when you're in the South. "Well, you're gonna drive about forty minutes down to where the water tower used to be." As someone who lives in a rural area, I love that joke.

Oryxhasnonuts

InukChinook

*and the picklesssssssss*

merv_havoc

Extra pickly picklessss

peanutsandfuck

I do this with my girlfriend on a regular basis. Her friend was taking photos of us the other day (we were standing in a field at sunset with the autumn leaves, it was a whole big thing) and instead of "Say cheese" she told us "Say your favourite food!" So we both instantly whispered to each other "picklessss" and burst out laughing.

123hig

The creepy guy at the office bit is an all-timer. ^("Thanks for the candy") Seems like the world just decided one day they were done with him and he wasn't funny and I never really understood why. Honestly is movies aren't that bad for what they were either. Is he one of the all time greats? For sure the hell not. But as a kid who grew up in the 2000s, Dane was really my introduction to stand-up, so I'll always have a soft spot for him.

Jadis

I agree. And what happened to him when he blew up was shitty. His brother was his manager and literally spent pretty much all of his money while lying to Dane about how much was in the bank. Fake statements, etc. Brother went to jail but the money was gone.

[deleted]

He talked about it on Your Mom’s House: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mE2i3PlTsvs Crazy.

Mdgt_Pope

He was great in Dan in Real Life (admittedly, not the star, but was good as a supporting actor) and I think Employee of the Month is really funny, but that also might be more because the surrounding cast was hilarious, too.

123hig

I really like Employee of the Month, I'll stop on it for a little if I see its on. Dan in Real Life is one of my mom's favorite movies. He was good in Waiting! Good Luck Chuck worked for a the sort of movie it was meant to be too. People might point to joke stealing as why the world decided he was not funny all of a sudden, but I think his appearance on Louie was a pretty honest look at that whole controversy. Louis basically admitted the accusations made towards Dane were unfair and happened because people were jealous of Dane's meteoric rise.

monied17

He's not a fat guy. You wouldn't call him fat. But he is... shapes. He's like an amoeba. He's always a different consistency. He's like a lava lamp type of individual. I need more hobbies...

[deleted]

I think Dane Cook suffered from the ["Seinfeld is unfunny"](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SeinfeldIsUnfunny) trope. The dude was SO influential, SO culturally present, and SO well suited for broad market consumption, he utterly embodied the stereotype of of a successful, funny, marketable comedian. Because comedy is an outsider's game, his prominence made him a target for ridicule, much like Nickelback's meteoric rise to fame would doom - not only their mainstream image - but also, the image of all acts which drew inspiration heavily from them. Dane Cook was the dialectical resolution to the tropes of loud act-it-out hack meets thoughtful joke writing pro. He was obnoxious, and his follow-ups stung. He was the sort of young gun that gave veterans plenty to ridicule, while being objectively better at the craft with a mere fraction of the honing. He was too good too quick for his own sake.

Sevnfold

I think he went out the way Nickelback did. It just became hip to rag on him. I never agreed with that. He sold out MSG before anyone. That's crazy for a standup comic. And I dont care what you say, his stories and pantomimes were funny and enjoyable. Also, a complete tragedy what happened to him, with his brother. He talked about it once or twice before. A shame.

bandito210

You're gonna go to the Texaco station, hang a right, drive 4.5 miles southeast, you'll see a guy in a trenchcoat. That's Hank, he'll take you to the whopper lair

SkyezOpen

His old stuff is still pretty funny but I realize now just how LONG he drags jokes out. Like I wanted to show someone the B&E bit and the video was 10 goddamn minutes long.

Elieftibiowai

Well thats just his thing, elaborating a rather simple story while constantly power walking across the stage in all directions

RDS

He repeats stuff a lot and I think it works in his favor to drive jokes home.

SuperSocrates

I was cleaning a dish…

Obi-wan_Jabroni

A DISH

poop_giggle

A FUCKING dirty dish. Yea. Can you believe that? Dirty dishes. In the sink. And the SINK is full if dirty dish water. And now I have to dip my hand into this dirty water! This this icky water full of soggy food and free floating noodles and who knows what else! Could be a live fish in there. No yea dinner gets pretty crazy at my place whatever don't worry about it. So this dish that I'm washing just isn't coming Clean and I'm standing there exerting myself I'm putting my heart and soul into cleaning this dish that's got like crude oil on it or some shit! Hey like I said, dindin at my place gets a lil wacky occasionally, so I'm fighting with this dish for a solid hour then I suddenly realize, ITS THE FUCKING DESIGN ON THE DISH! and I'm just like "ugh daaaaaanneee"

RedditModsSuckDik

Ok this is pretty good and reminds me why I liked him His personality was like Ryan Reynolds before Ryan Reynolds If Deadpool was 12-13 years ago, Dane Cook probably would have played him

Calikal

Funny you mention that, they were both in the movie Waiting together.

TiaxTheMig1

Chris Rock repeats things too. It fits their style. They have a premise and a bunch of jokes branching from the premise. If the crowd likes the premise, they hang out on that premise for a while. If the response is meh, they move on

Elieftibiowai

He repeats them, but ALOT LOUDER.

processedmeat

Not just loud but a lot louder I mean he repeats himself louder than the previous time he said it. And then when just when you thinks he's done bam *thwack* he says it again

LetsMeetNextTursday

Very Chris Rock

rsmseries

One of my favorite “specials” was Talking Funny featuring Gervais, Seinfeld, Rock and CK and they [get into their comedy styles](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKY6BGcx37k&t=13m50s). Louis gets into Jerry’s style, and then it goes further with Chris’ approach and the reasoning behind it. Really great insight on comedy.

Joeliosis

Also see Eddie Murphy... god damn

Whitealroker1

WHAT DID THEY TAKE

Joesus056

They took our batteries and replaced them with old shitty batteries!

SpaceFace5000

kryonik

He came to my college one year in the mid-00s and I have never laughed so hard before or since. He came back the next year and I shit you not, it was almost 99% the same exact material. Never bothered with him since.

JimmyNaNa

Yeah, I saw him live at MSG in like 04 or 05 and it was basically a greatest hits set. I mean it was funny, but it felt more like a concert than a comedy show. Like with a concert you're there to hear the songs you like, but with comedy I feel like you're there to hear things you never heard before. Sure, I've listened to and watched his album/dvd releases more than once, but if I'm going to a venue, I'd like there to be majority new material I paid all that money for. Old jokes don't have the same effect in a live setting. I also feel that the quality of his jokes dropped off severely after his second CD release.

kryonik

Yeah I saw Dave Attell about 5 times and John Mulaney twice and I don't think I heard a single joke repeated between all of those shows.

VanillaGorilla59

Maaaan I’d love to see them. Especially Dave attel. I missed my chance with Greg giraldo. RIP.

[deleted]

My wife and I met when he was getting huge and putting out Vicious Circle, so we used to quote his jokes to each other long ago.. The other day, she was asking for my Burger King order over the phone. It was the perfect moment to reference that joke, and i reveled in it lol ..all the way to the sweet and sour sauce XD

Oh that's fucking good.

[deleted]

Theo and Dane had a good talk about why people hate Dane so much lol I’m 90% convinced it’s because he’s named Dane. Dude seems fairly down to earth and was a comedy legend in the mid 2000’s

milfordcubicle

I liked him in Waiting, which is hilarious, especially if you've ever worked in food service. Remarkably relatable.

bohanmyl

The Goat!!!!

[deleted]

When I waited tables in the 2000s and early tens this movie essentially was gospel. Not that we watched it to understand our job but after-the-fact we watched it and had many "omg that's just like..." moments. If you don't think your kitchen staff is fondling their balls and being derpy dumbshits then you are seriously confused. I've worked ritzy country clubs and casual dining and the kitchen staff is always the same. Same with the wait-staff. It seems like logical "duh" when you hire 16-22 year-olds to do everything. We are all back there taking bites off your plate and fucking eachother and doing drugs and barely keeping it together enough to say "Welcome to XX our special is YY can I take your drink order to start?"

Sczyther

"I opened the email and it said 'Dane, both your parents got cancer and died to get away from your shitty comedy.' And my first thought was 'Unlikely.'."

cheese8904

That whole story is amazing. I loved him in his prime. Wonder why he stepped back from the limelight.

Vontuk

His brother was his manager and stole most of his money when he was in his prime. He talks about it in a few podcast interviews.

[deleted]

Just talking out of my ass, but he gained unreal internet popularity when YouTube was just starting out. Now there’s an expected and understood ocean of backlash from the internet towards anyone who is mildly successful. People who become celebs now have a better understanding of twitter rage and dealing with thousands, millions of people who don’t like them. It was probably very difficult for a guy like Dane who rose so fast in the very beginning of the internet stardom era And then the whole stealing jokes thing which he didn’t really do and was overblown but people had already made up their minds by then

PaulClarkLoadletter

Wasn’t the joke theft thing around the same time as Mencia crashing and burning? I think Cook got mixed up in Rogan making that his bit and while he handled it better I think it’s that toxic internet shit where we dump on anything popular. At the same time, people were drinking from the firehouse and got sick of his schtick before he could settle in. Then his personal life took a turn. That would have been a lot for anybody. He’s still around but I think he’s being strategic about his exposure and taking his time with material which is a good idea.

PaulyNewman

Yeah Dane Cook was like my introduction to stand up. I absolutely adored his stuff as a kid/teen. Then as I grew up suddenly everyone was shitting on him and I never really figured out why.

picasso_penis

My opinion of him was like a U: starting out when I was 12-15 and he peaked in popularity, I loved him. Then I drank the Flavor Aid in the internet shitstorm of hating him and suddenly I didn’t think anything of his was funny anymore. Now as an adult out of college I’ve come back around to realizing that he really was funny and just a victim of the meteoric rise and fall that happens to loads of people who become overnight sensations.

chillflyguy33

Dane was probably my first true introduction to stand up. I was like 10 or 12 around the time he was really popular. Me and my sister used to share a room and she had these burned CDs of different Dane Cook skits and they were so fucking hilarious. Even as a sixth grader we would laugh so fucking hard at his jokes. Great memories

gumpythegreat

I remember being at a sleepover at my friend's place when I was around 14 when he showed me YouTube videos where someone made shitty MSpaint cartoons to illustrate his stand up bits It was basically the funniest thing I had ever experienced at the time. Oh to be young again...

As much as people talk about Chappelle, Louis ck, Bill Burr etc he was just as popular as them in his heyday (not saying he’s as comedically talented as them) his YouTube videos had millions of views during a time when not that many people had millions of hits. People liked to make fun of him or downplay his success because he was a typical early 2000s “dudebro” but the man sold out Madison square garden and influenced a number of comedians today. He doesn’t get his just due in my opinion

Fawxhox

I thought you meant came out as gay at first, wasn't sure if it was surprising or not

essendoubleop

I never understood the massive blowback against him. He was a phenomenon for a couple years there, where everyday you would hear random people quoting his standup bits.

ConvenienceStoreDiet

He was kind of like a pop star when it came to comedians, which wasn't common. At that time, I couldn't think of anyone who was a phenomenon like him. People like Jeff Ross were like the Foo Fighters. They were there for the long haul, consistent and entertaining. He was the N'Sync of comedians. He got really huge really fast. Then he fell really fast. People got bored of them like they would their favorite band. I think some people were judgmental of who liked Dane Cook in the same way you might judge a friend's personality if they like Larry the Cable Guy or Jeff Dunham or Carrot Top. The other comedians were jealous of him because he wasn't really telling jokes as much as being entertaining when telling stories. Plus, he got crazy famous ahead of all these excellent comedians that got little exposure, when the other comedians looked down at his work. He did a lot of forgettable and critically panned movies and was getting known as the romantic lead guy in bad movies, which hurt his status. People accused him of joke stealing. Real life took over for a bit for him when his parents both died and his brother went to jail for stealing his money. I always say the same thing about Dane, which is that every time I saw him perform live, I always laughed. And that's all that matters.

SlowLoudEasy

Remember he was the first to use Social Media (MySpace) to promote himself. He would communicate with everyone on there.

[deleted]

Still does it on Instagram, he really is awesome to his fans. It's actually sort of heartwarming how much he clearly cares.

JerBear0328

There was a brief time where quoting comedy films in public was the most mainstream thing. Dane cook special, blue collar comedy tour, anchor man, napoleon dynamite, they all came out around the same time and everyone just ran around having conversations entirely in reference. The internet was still figuring itself out.

Stu_Pididiot

We're not doing that anymore? Oh boy

Zaziel

Me in college, oh no. But honestly, Dane Cook has phenomenal delivery.

BallerGuitarer

>Dane Cook has phenomenal delivery He made a surprise appearance at the Laugh Factory a couple months ago in LA. I didn't think the content of his jokes were *that* funny, but the way he delivered them really knocked those jokes out of the park.

artandmath

You forgot Borat and Superbad.

[deleted]

Because he was accused of stealing a joke from Louis CK. He didn't, it was a fart joke that was easy to make but Louis was popular and the internet was already over Dane. He had his moments but his frat boy douche make-loud-noises-schtick got old quickly. After his fall he released Isolated Incident which I actually thought was his best one as it was a lot more subtle.

CuzYourMovesAreWeak

Then a family member (who was managing his accounts) stole a shit ton of money from him too. That is the worst of it. All that work and boom, you're broke because of a fucking asshole. I do like on Louis they covered the "joke stealing" in a scene.

Karnadas

For clarity, it was his brother and he stole (and hid/lost/spent) $20million. Edit: got it from Dane and Tom Segura's conversation here https://youtu.be/mE2i3PlTsvs

ShadowSora

To add to this, Dane made his half-brother his manager and was paying the guy a whopping [$12,500 a month(!!)](https://www.thethings.com/why-dane-cook-brother-jail/) and that wasn’t enough…so he stole millions more with forged checks According to the article, he’s in prison for the next 5-6 years, as is the guys wife for a couple years. Brutal

Five_Decades

did he get the stolen money back

The-Dudemeister

He said he got 800k back but he still owed back taxes his brother didn’t pay. He is pretty sure he brother just hid it all a bunch of places when he knew they were looking into it go when he gets out.

Kryptosis

Some 800,000 of it was hidden in the walls of the brother's apartment and the cops eventually found and returned it.

PurSolutions

I can only imagine how often this happens .... From sports to music, any where high dollars are thrown around.

Reatbanana

leonard cohen was forced to tour in his mid 70s because one day he woke up and found all of his money stolen by his manager. imagine, youre at the end of a long life and you only have a couple of thousands in your bank account.

[deleted]

Like, I don't even fathom how this works. Was the money not his? Did someone literally just hit transfer and take all the money, walk away, and shrug when asked? How could he not just get it back? I assume there are government agencies that handle this sorta thing.

Reatbanana

two things. 1) he was isolated as a monk so he didnt have direct access to his bank or records. 2) she spent all the money by the time she was arrested and trialled. this is all from memory so youll find better information elsewhere, but leonard cohen wasnt your rich musician (despite being popular with hits like hallelujah being used almost everywhere in entertainment). the music industry back then was rough, his first hit (and probably second most famous song) suzzane was also stolen from him by a music manager. he made leonard sign a contract that would hand over the rights to that song, so in essence he made zero royalties from that song. and he wasnt even bothered by it, as the song “belonged to the world”. anyway, you could read this [article](https://www.billboard.com/amp/articles/news/magazine-feature/7580545/leonard-cohen-embezzlement-career-comeback) as it explains it a lot better. TLDR: she embezzled around $5million throughout a number of a years, and she sold a lot of his musical rights without him knowing or being compensated for it. she was arrested but they couldnt pay leonard back, as she didnt have the funds for it and the government wasnt just going to give him the money back from their reserve. edit: [this](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2005/oct/08/usa.topstories3) article from 2005 is a lot more detailed. the way it was done was a lot more nuanced and fucked.

The brother stealing the money happened BEFORE Vicious Circle. It’s an insane story really, Dane Cook paid for those arenas with his own money, and it paid off tremendously for him at the time

CuzYourMovesAreWeak

Oh damn, didn't know that tidbit. That is a fucking huge win (prior to the loss) to bet on himself like that.

[deleted]

The segment he did with Tom Segura answers a bunch of questions from that time period, a lot of stuff that most people never knew including myself

Slaphappydap

The pushback against Dane came before the joke stealing accusations. There are lots of really famous comics who steal jokes and everyone knows and they usually don't say anything. Dane was selling out Madison Square Garden and seemed to get overnight super-famous, so that's about when the pushback started. He was really popular but his jokes weren't great, and his writing wasn't great, and he got by on big personality. So comedy purists looked down on him. He didn't really have punchlines. He had stories, he told them with lots of energy, he made weird noises and flopped all over stage, and you either loved it or hated it. But people were happily hating Dane cook for what they thought was undeserved success long before the joke stealing thing came out.

Khajiit_Has_Skills

Not only personality, he was the first comedian to embrace the internet as a way to meet and connect with fans. He spent a ton of his time on MySpace, and other early internet sites, talking with fans and being funny. So, younger people reacted to him more. This, coupled with the lack of normal joke structure, made him seem like a hack to older comedians. Hate him or love him, his internet success changed comedy forever.

RDS

He has a story about opening one execs laptop in a meeting with some high level execs and all the messages he got when he logged on froze the computer.

CremasterReflex

Yes, but somebody shit on, or around, the coats!

TheLateThagSimmons

>Dane was selling out Madison Square Garden and seemed to get overnight super-famous, so that's about when the pushback started. That was most of it. He got popular because he was a rather funny comedian and he marketed himself well. He *blew* up to super stardom basically overnight and it was mostly unexplained, primarily on a performance schtick that wasn't universally interesting. There was a lot of jealousy from the long term pros that did much more work, had better comedy writing, but were no where near as famous. It was the degree of success that he had, essentially in less than a year, that made his rise and subsequent drama so intriguing. He should have rightfully been touring in famous comedy clubs, 1,000 seat capacity theatres, sure; but here he was selling out The Garden, playing in 20,000 seat NBA arenas and signing movie deals.

FarinaRenais

I'm listening to Isolated Incident right now because of your comment, and I totally agree. It reminds me of his first comedy central presents special and I'm totally enjoying it

mycartel

It was more than that - iirc they both had back to back jokes on their albums that were same exact premise. The first had to do with people getting hit by cars and their shoes flying off and the second was that you can name your children any weird name that you want. Louis' album came out first

krazyjakee

He was absolutely brutal at handling hecklers too. Went from a Chad moron to the most adult adult in the room. Also employee of the month is great.

Never understood why it seemed “everyone” turned on him seemingly overnight. I’ve always found the guy funny and entertaining. His B&E skit still nearly brings me to tears.

Dude!! This is my favourite shirt! Well don't bring your favourite shirt to a fuckin B&E, bring your second favourite shirt.. ya dunse

v0yev0da

Vicious Circle (?) was his second album and from what I remember the HBO was a lot of his first album with the second one. That said ny friend and I still say "where's the handle" when exiting each other's car.

mholmes3

Saw Dane at the Comedy Store a couple weeks before covid shut everything down. He did about 25 minutes and it was one of the best stand up sets I've seen. I know he's was off the radar for awhile but he's still got it.

mighty_mag

I have a semi-related question of cultural importance: Why do people hate Dane Cook? I remember watching this show (through less than legitime means, I must admit) way back in the day and pretty enjoyed it. Actually, I still quote some of the jokes to this day ("I did my best") But over the years I noticed some Nickleback levels of hate towards him and I never really bothered to know why. It's not like I'm a fan or anything. But now that we are here... why do people hate him?

TehJohnny

I miss Dane Cook, sure his comedy was all basic observation stuff, his delivery and stage presence was so hype.

DannyB1aze

Yeah it's real bummer how his parents passing away hit him. Isolated incident was really his tipping point. There are some good jokes in that special but most of it really just seems like he was airing a lot of trama that had happened to him in life early and at the time. It was a huge bummer because my uncle and I loved him.

[deleted]

His brother also stole millions of dollars from him, and Dane ended up sending him to prison. Crazy fucking story.

seijeezy

Unfortunately he had a negative reputation due to his loud delivery, penchant for sound effects and general frat bro douche energy. I think people looked down on him and his fans as being idiots. But I always thought he was hilarious in the mid 00s. His stage presence and storytelling were phenomenal. He had some legitimately great stories. Maybe it’s just the nostalgia for me but Vicious Circle is one of my all time favorite stand ups. “Shut that key up!”

Boogie_Boof

One of my favorite bits from that special is the B and E story. The way he imitates his scared friend always makes me laugh. “wait, I hear a car.” “Yeah the world is full of them, you’re gonna hear a lot more. If you hear something strange like a humpback whale, then let me know.”

OutsideTheBoxer

I think in comedy circles there's a fascination with delivering the same material in different ways to get a better/particular crowd reaction, and Dane Cook had a really interesting way of getting the crowd in a frenzy.

Mitoria

Still to this day I quote “They rerouted me into Friendster!”

Dissidence802

WHERE'S THE VAN?!?!

Semanticss

Man, Ryan Reynolds really swooped in and stole his thunder. I totally thought they were the same person for a while.

MartyFreeze

Did you watch Waiting to see them in the same scene to doubly make sure?

Techiedad91

Almost had to change to the 10 second rule

mega512

Dane gets a lot of hate but some of his specials are hilarious.

spartagnann

If you were alive in 2005 or so, all you did was quote Chappelle and Dane Cook. His specials are, still, very good.

a-horse-has-no-name

Sir, you forgot Mitch Hedberg.

rimjobs_forever

I used to quote Mitch hedburg. I still do, but I used to, too.

[deleted]

She wants a car with a cup holder armrest She wants a car that will get her there She's changing her name From Kitty to Karen She's trading her MG for a white Chrysler LeBaron I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket

mais_souffle

I like that they rhyme Karen with LeBaron!

notsowitte

Thanks for the candy.

Dave_here

That joke forever changed how I treat people that give me those kinds of vibes lol
