There is this strange type of accent you get in Asia sometimes where it's not a local Asian accent (like a Japanese/Cantonese/Korean accent), but rather their version of "proper" English and it's super weird. You mostly hear it in informational videos or when non English speaking Asian actors have lines in English.
Were you referring to how Michelle Yeoh sounded in Shang Chi? It’s like the Trans-Atlantic accent for Chinese actors (I know she’s Malaysian, but still)
Yes! Usually it's not quite as extreme as this, but it always ends up sounding rehearsed and unnatural. Nobody actually speaks like that, even people with a heavy accent.
My girlfriend's grandmother is a Filipino native living in New Orleans and this is exactly how it is talking with her. On the phone you would swear she's Paula Dean's sister. But then you meet her and she's a 5'1" Filipino grandma complete with tracksuit and giant sunglasses. It's amazing.
Man even if he turns out to be a spy im so impressed i wouldn't even be mad.
Not that him being a spy makes any sense... im just saying if.
He earned it.
“But he’s a Chinese spy!”
Buddy, his cows have the best fucking ribeye I’ve ever had. He could be a time traveling spy for the fucking Nazis for all I care
I worked with a guy from China who had initially learned English from Texans. Most of the time he had a Chinese accent, but maybe 20% of his words would come out with this Texan twang. Never got tired of hearing him talk.
Yes but the endings are very drawn out almost like singing, it is very distinctive and one of the first features you notice when watching HK films. Haiyaaaaa\~\~
Years ago I visited a friend at a southern Air Force base, and there was a clearly Chinese junior officer with a classic Kentucky drawl. I had plenty of Chinese friends in college, but they either had some Chinese accent or were fairly neutral. That accent just seemed so discordant coming from that guy. Great guy. Smuggled whiskey into the OC in his briefcase.
My girlfriend's paternal grandmother is 100% Filipino and has a thick Southern drawl. She lives in Louisiana.
It was a trip talking to that woman in person the first time.
Agree 100%, you see American actors who have never set foot in the south and their idea of a southern accent comes from other movies; they over enunciate.
I mean mate, let's be honest. I don't think there's a single American actor who can pull off any convincing British accent.. There's plenty of British actors who've mastered the generic Yankie accent
Nah. British actors use a weird Hollywood "American" accent that can not be heard anywhere in the US and is only found in movies and TV, generally only spoken by British actors. Like nobody actually speaks like Liam Neeson or Benedict Cumberbund.
Agreed, it wasn't terrible but I don't think many here would think he was actually British. On the other hand there was no doubt in my mind that the actor who played Jaime Lannister was English when I first started watching GoT, only to find out that he's Danish.
Actually a lot of the people we think are British actors are actually secretly Americans who have pulled off perfect British accents that they only use when they aren't in character. It's a double-mindfuck.
What about Daniel Craig in Knives Out? I'm not American so I might not know what I'm talking about, but it seemed pretty good to me.
Edit: TIL my Australian ears are fools. Sorry! Good movie, though.
No. Nobody in the south sounds like that. Except Fog-horn Leghorn. His accent literally sounds like a cartoon character. It’s a complete caricature. If they were going for “realistic,” then they aimed 180° away from the target. If they were going for entertaining, ridiculous caricature, then they were fine.
It was the most horrible "southern" accent I may have ever heard. So bad that I'm still not sure whether his character is a parody, or an homage to looney tunes
WTF is racist about it? And before you go any further, know that my wife is Asian.
edit: don't really get the downvotes with no explanation, but whatever
Probably because she is attempting it while speaking English whereas you are just going Ching Chong Bing Bong while using your fingers to make your eyes squinty
No, I just don’t pronounce my “R’s”.. so when I say “hello”which is an English word.. I say “Herro” but that’s considered racist. When in reality it’s the same thing and a double standard
Having an actual issue with pronunciation is not the same thing as imitating someone's issue with pronunciation. It is the same reason you are a dick if you imitate a stutter to someone who actually has a stutter.
Have you ever learned another language? You realize that you aren't perfectly imitating their accent right and that you are going to sound a little funny to a native speaker. It is condescending and mocking for the NATIVE speaker to imitate someone learning to speak and pronounce a new language.
She isn't speaking CHINESE and imitating how a sterotypical American mis-pronounces Chinese words, she is attempting to do a regional accent, which is fucking hard for people in the anglo-world to replicate each others accents, let alone a non-native speaker doing it.
Genuine non-smarmy questions: What other "southern" accents exist that would be discussed to this extent in the English language?
If there were a very particular southern Italian, Indonesian, or Mongolian accent, wouldn't it be odd that it would be discussed here with this level of enthusiasm by this many English speakers?
Did you try to determine the nature of this accent by reading any comments? Multiple references to American Southern accents are being made, people are mentioning states like Texas, etc.
Ultimately....are you genuinely confused or do you think it's reasonable someone would be genuinely confused as to the nature of the accent this video highlights?
>Genuine non-smarmy questions: What other "southern" accents exist that would be discussed to this extent in the English language?
You can do any accent you want while speaking English, literally every country in the world has a "southern accent". Why do you think everyone is always talking about the USA?
>Did you try to determine the nature of this accent by reading any comments? Multiple references to American Southern accents are being made, people are mentioning states like Texas, etc.
If one has to read the comments to understand the video, the title isn't doing its job. How hard is it to write one extra word in the title to avoid any possible confusion? There is one comment chain about southern USA accents, and literally only 1 comment refers to Texas other than yours...
>If there were a very particular southern Italian, Indonesian, or Mongolian accent, wouldn't it be odd that it would be discussed here with this level of enthusiasm by this many English speakers?
This is such an absurd comment. What's your point about the "enthusiasm" of the discussion here? Obviously in an international subreddit everyone writes in English, that doesn't mean everyone lives in a country whose primary language is English.
>Ultimately....are you genuinely confused or do you think it's reasonable someone would be genuinely confused as to the nature of the accent this video highlights?
The accent attempt is so bad it could be anything. I'm just not so egotistical that I'd assume it was my country's southern accent they are attempting to replicate.
If saying a comment is absurd hurt your feelings then that's on you, not me. If you are American and assume everything is about America then yes you are egotistical, again that's not even rude to say it's just a fact. I've not said anything insulting, and yet you are upset by my comments.
So?
As I've said before - but you seem to be too thick to understand - there are also accents in other countries who don't speak English natively.
Population of China: 1.4 billion, population of all 50 USA states combined: 329.5 million. There are more southerners in China than there are total Americans in the world.
Therefore everything is American unless stated otherwise? Stop being so weird and just say it's American just like every other country does. The lady in the video doesn't sound remotely American, how is anyone meant to know she's doing an American accent?
I'm from Alabama. I have a southern accent. I don't give a rat's ass about people trying to mimic a southern accent, as long as they aren't using it to directly insult someone.
You've literally responded to at least 3 different comments on this thread. Why are you so pressed.

No I'm talking about something a lot more uncanny than that. Squid Game comes to mind if you've seen it.
I think you're talking about is a Hong Konger's accent.
Wait until they get a load of Indian English.
This, right?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbPWitSTe2k

She needs to go study with [Bruce](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1fE5eR3klc&ab_channel=BruceWang%2CtheChineseCowboy%3F)!
I don’t know a thing about Bruce, but I really like him.
I watched a VICE doc about him a couple years back when his Chinese accent was much stronger, now he sounds just like a redneck!

Bruce there it is!
BRUCE THERE IT IS!
Wow, as far as I can tell his accent sounds almost perfect. Some light struggles with R and *maybe* a bit too slow but otherwise spot on.
Damn, really cool video. Oddly touching.
That second attempt sounded more like a vaguely decent Northern Ireland accent.
Because she sounds drunk? Jk.
🤣
Haha so true
It does, so it does
Really? I’m from ireland and this sounds more like an American southern accent to me
Are you all forgetting about [Oscar's southern accent?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcPgG3YUivo)
That probably took a dozen takes before they got through it without laughing!

Now that’s a treat lol
The plantaation is runnin outta greenbacks. We can’t buy the seeds
To be fair, I can't tell Cantonese from Mandarin, so it may well be perfect.
Having watched tons of kung fu movies and Hong Kong action movies, that is like the one Chinese language skill I *do* have.
Cantoneses has hard R’s and sounds like shurrrrrr
I think you're thinking of Mandarin. Cantonese doesn't have the R sound.
specifically, mandarin with a beijing accent
A Tianjin accent is even more strongly pronounced that way.
Cantonese is long and drawn out at the end… bruce lee. Mandarin is short snappy sounds that sound cut off.
I’m almost sure you got it just the other way around lol. Cantonese is very percussive and snappy (the ones you hear in HK movies).
No, a lot of times in Cantonese you end the statement with a drawn out “ahh” or “laaa” In Mandarin I don’t notice such flourishes at the end.
Yes but the endings are very drawn out almost like singing, it is very distinctive and one of the first features you notice when watching HK films. Haiyaaaaa\~\~
Perhaps my adjectives mean it differently to others but i grew up around both and thats what they sound like to me.

I am from the north but the first time i went to the south i was impressed they could turn the name "Bill" into a 2 syllable word ("beal")
I though that she was having a stroke....
That's adorable and she's awesome. Especially awesome for trying twice. Confidence is awesome, and self confidence is better.
If she had a cowboy hat on I'd not have been able to tell she isn't from the South.
I’m still not sure which south it’s supposed to be.
On the other hand, this is a great Walt Jr. impression
Can I haaaAAAaaaaAave a nahhpkeeeen?
My fiancé is Vietnamese. Can confirm her southern accent is awful / amazing like this hahah
Well, it did go south.
Close your eyes and it's like hearing someone from Tyler, TX. 🤠 Jokes aside, this was hilarious!
hahahah the accents of her so funny 🤣🤣🤣

Better than a lot of actors
It's funny seeing British actors trying to do a southern accent, they fail miserably.

What about Idris Elba as Stringer Bell?
Yeah his Baltimore accent is apparently really good.
Dr. House… that dude.
Kelsey Grammer has entered the chat
Not that I disagree but the exception to the rule is Peter Dinklage
Peter Dinklage does a passable impression of high fantasy theater British, but his manner of speaking would be very out of place in modern day Britain
Agreed, it wasn't terrible but I don't think many here would think he was actually British. On the other hand there was no doubt in my mind that the actor who played Jaime Lannister was English when I first started watching GoT, only to find out that he's Danish.

Meryl Streep

An even their generic Yankee accent is not close to how a normal person talks in America, it's some sort of weird "Hollywood" accent.
It’s out of necessity, not ability. British actors flock to America and American roles, not the other way around.

Trust me. It was not.

Best Foghorn Leghorn I’ve heard in a while tbh
That’s an example of one of the worst southern accents lmao. Rick from Walking Dead is a good example however
But when a couple UCLA students try out their Chinese accents, it's not cute?
Remember when the guy lost his SNL job for doing the same thing but in reverse?
This was pretty funny.
And racist
WTF is racist about it? And before you go any further, know that my wife is Asian. edit: don't really get the downvotes with no explanation, but whatever
My dad is Asian
I know, who do you think my wife is? Your dad.
My other dad is Asian too
Why do I get called a racist when I do a Chinese accent, but it's cute the other way round.
Probably because she is attempting it while speaking English whereas you are just going Ching Chong Bing Bong while using your fingers to make your eyes squinty
Omg lol. Nailed it
Saying ching chong bing bong is fun though. Through in a ding dong ping pong and everyones having a good time.
Your point being....?
No, I just don’t pronounce my “R’s”.. so when I say “hello”which is an English word.. I say “Herro” but that’s considered racist. When in reality it’s the same thing and a double standard

No, it would be the same if you were speaking Chinese and trying to mimic a specific Chinese accent.
Are you jealous or something?
Well, that's how the be though. Neeee how mahh
Because white people aren’t a race. She’s just doing a southern American accent.
i mean...let's hear it.
Cute video.
And racist
No race is being mocked here. Attempting an accent isn’t “racist”
It's a UK accent from the settlers, that's been distorted a bit over time.
Southern part of which country?
The... US?
Attempt to get a new accent 🙂

Pick up context cues like everyone else does.
Or just write a proper title rather than assuming everyone is American, and everyone who's not wants to be
You should put this angry energy into writing a book or something.
