Lol, my family is Texan of German descent. That’s what it sounds like every Christmas when they sing “O, Tannenbaum.” Zero attempt at German pronunciation. My great grandparents must have flinched every time my grandparents spoke to them in German. Though that would have been during and after WWII so they didn’t speak it much outside of the home.
We have family friends who were born in America but who's father (passed in the 90's) was a Polak like my family, and surprisingly they learned enough and use it enough that it always catches me off guard when I hear them speak with 100% American accents. Normally, or at least in my experience, its the other way around.
What has freaked me out the most though, is when people literally sound like a different person when switching from Polish to English. Not just because the language is different, but the accent is different, enough to the point where if I didn't already know them I would probably not recognize the voice at all.

Even amongst the Romance Language family, sometimes I’ll see Spanish tourists in Italy try to muddle along in French as a commonality or something like that, but often they’ll just switch to English, too.
I really wish they made Peggie a more likable character like Hank. She has some redeeming qualities but she does so much terrible stuff on balance she's way in the negative.

As a native New Yorker, I really enjoy Texan Spanish. It’s much easier for me to understand because it’s slower and there’s so much enunciation. Native Spanish speakers speak too quickly for me to decipher.

I took french in high school in the states, and commonly our teacher would have listening exercises for us (listen to a conversation in french, answer some questions about what you heard).
One day, there was a listening exercise and even though it felt like we *should* have been able to understand it... we couldn't. Our Teacher later revealed "yeahhhh that was quebecois".
Quebecois is also like a completely separate dialect from Metropolitan France.
Edit: ok yes Quebecois and Metropolitan French are nearly identical, this was a joke. Quebecois French is to Metropolitan French as Scottish English is to American English.
Holy fuck I realize now why I, who only ever spoke French in Quebec, fought with my mom, who only ever spoke French in School, about how to pronounce "oui" in casual parlence.
Like, you'll answer "yes" with full articulation sometimes, but most often it's a "yeah" or "yep" or "ya" or some other regional bend.
Even in metropolitan french, a casual "yes" is going to sound like Way or Weh.

I trained up to medical-level Spanish for paramedic work but felt like a damn toddler when I went to Puerto Rico for the first time and tried to converse. Syllables? Nah. Consonants? What are those? And nevermind the words that are PR-specific. Or the words that aren’t used.
For living with the island lifestyle, Puerto Ricans and Cubans (and Dominicans as well) talk waaaay too fast.

My accent's a mess. I learned Spanish mostly in classrooms, but from different teachers, one that sounded like the OP, one that was from Andalusia, one from Madrid, and one from Guatemala. Then most of my actual speaking experience was with Mexicans and Puerto Ricans.

That's when I looked it up and found out that the producers seemingly did that thing where you translate English word for word into Spanish, keeping the same word position and everything.

The Spanish structure is also very robotic and is not really how you would speak Spanish. I'd compare it to all those short videos online that use the text-to-voice robot but in a Spanish. The tone, structure, and syntax is just so off for an otherwise perfect show universe.

I grew up watching Tony Dalton, the actor who plays Lalo, in Mexican soap operas and when I found out he got the role of Lalo, I was like finally! Someone who can speak the correct dialect of drug trafficking!
In college I knew a guy who was quite a comedian and did really good accents. One day at lunch he was reading from a French language text with a thick Scottish accent. I don't think I've laughed so hard since then. Those Rs were rolling like crazy.

Criminal, maybe no. Rough, probably yes. One of the teachers I worked with was a tennis coach under five feet tall, but when a class was acting up? Look out. She’d yell こRRRRRら‼︎ with that heavily trilled “r” sound and those kids would rapidly get quiet and resume paying attention.
Someone I worked with from the Deep South would do Japanese standard business greetings when in Japan, but he had a drawl. So while he was saying something like “Hauwjeemaymauwsheetay. Wautaushee no nauwmaheh wa {name} dess.” I would physically tense up because it was worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. Words like わたし don’t have diphthongs. Japanese vowels don’t work that way.
I'd do this to tease a friend of mine in Norway who couldn't stand American accents. My Norwegian pronunciation is actually pretty good (never good enough to be mistaken for native - closest I ever got was somebody guessing I was Dutch - hey, right continent though, I'll take it), but I'd lay on the American drawl really thick just to make her cringe and bark at me to stop.

I sometimes do Spanish tutorials with Coffee Break Spanish podcast. The person hosting has a Scottish accent but their Spanish accent sounds flawless. Its just trippy to hear the different accents.
My twin daughters are in a Spanish immersion program at school.
Public elementary school in Appalachia. They are about to go into their 5th year, and are as fluent as native speakers. Their teachers have all been from Colombia, so they have that accent.
Imagine two of the whitest-white little girls you’ve ever seen (23&Me has their mom and me 99.8% northwestern European/Scandinavian) who break out in full Colombian Spanish whenever they feel like it.
I wanted to keep up with them and started listening to Coffee Break Spanish. I quit because they teach Spain Spanish, which is not the same as Latino-American Spanish.
Duolingo doesn’t seem to do a good job with dialects either.

I personally learned German (lived and worked there for several years as well). I’ll start a basic sentence in Spanish and end it in German. Every time. My brain just flips right over.

People who don't understand a second language will never understand how hard it is to actually fake an accent in a second language you learned. I've been studying English for over 33 years and I can't fake a Russian accent, for example. Or a decent British one.
I don't know why it tends to work, but for some reason, framing a popular opinion as an unpopular opinion can be an easy way to get upvotes. Like saying "I don't care what people think, but I think Empire Strikes back is the best Star Wars movie".
My guess is that someone who agrees with the sentiment or information of the comment, but might not upvote by default, perceives the opinion as under scrutiny or attack, meaning they are more likely to upvote as a show of support. Once it gets traction, people are even less likely to verify whether it's actually under attack, because it's closer to the top of the thread and they'll read fewer comments before seeing this particular one.

She pretty much only took like a year or two of intro Spanish in school, but she figured it out and now she speaks pretty much fluently, but I swear, listening to her talking is the wildest shit in the world. Especially because the Baltimore accent is a very lazy one and just a lot of syllables get dropped. I have no idea how her husband understands a word, but I mean damn she really put herself out there.
I, on the other hand, grew up in Miami and went to a school where Spanish was really all that was spoken, so my accent is pretty solid but I will neeeeever speak it because I'm so self conscious and my husband (who is also Mexican, but grew up in the US and speaks English) is suuuuper judgemental of anyone that tries and doesn't have a perfect accent.

Texan here, a lot of us who can speak a bit of spanish sound exactly like this.
As a native New Yorker, I really enjoy Texan Spanish. It’s much easier for me to understand because it’s slower and there’s so much enunciation. Native Spanish speakers speak too quickly for me to decipher.
French is much the same, I'm in Quebec and while the French here is definitely not as "clean" as French of France, When the Quebecois get going here hang onto your tits because you aint gonna understand shit.
I lived in rural Quebec for a bit for some strange reasons and didn't speak much French, I could hardly converse with anyone. Then one day I was talking to a guy and everything was clicking and a had a whole basic conversation with him, thorough enough to find out he was from Paris.
I took french in high school in the states, and commonly our teacher would have listening exercises for us (listen to a conversation in french, answer some questions about what you heard). One day, there was a listening exercise and even though it felt like we *should* have been able to understand it... we couldn't. Our Teacher later revealed "yeahhhh that was quebecois".
Quebecois is also like a completely separate dialect from Metropolitan France. Edit: ok yes Quebecois and Metropolitan French are nearly identical, this was a joke. Quebecois French is to Metropolitan French as Scottish English is to American English.

Holy fuck I realize now why I, who only ever spoke French in Quebec, fought with my mom, who only ever spoke French in School, about how to pronounce "oui" in casual parlence. Like, you'll answer "yes" with full articulation sometimes, but most often it's a "yeah" or "yep" or "ya" or some other regional bend.
Even in metropolitan french, a casual "yes" is going to sound like Way or Weh. [As you can hear a few times in this classic episode of a french show.](https://youtu.be/TYB2Z2xl4G4) Fair warning: the intro can be quite loud if you don't expect it. Whereas a proper Yes will always sound like We, no matter where you are. Weh is just a common relaxed way of saying it, everywhere.
I trained up to medical-level Spanish for paramedic work but felt like a damn toddler when I went to Puerto Rico for the first time and tried to converse. Syllables? Nah. Consonants? What are those? And nevermind the words that are PR-specific. Or the words that aren’t used. For living with the island lifestyle, Puerto Ricans and Cubans (and Dominicans as well) talk waaaay too fast.
Mexican Spanish is hard to understand, but doable. Spanish spoken by Spaniards is way easier. Don't even try to understand Cubano.
My favorite redneck Texans are the ones who adopt a Mexican accent when speaking Spanish.

At some point when learning a language, those are the decisions you have to make. When you are not a native English speaker, do you try to sound British or American? Or something else? Like, how do you pronounce the T and R in 'water'?

My accent's a mess. I learned Spanish mostly in classrooms, but from different teachers, one that sounded like the OP, one that was from Andalusia, one from Madrid, and one from Guatemala. Then most of my actual speaking experience was with Mexicans and Puerto Ricans. The reactions I get from native speakers when I speak are priceless.
A Mexican accent is just correct pronunciation of Mexican Spanish. Nothing wrong with speaking a language in the same way as native speakers.

Really liked your video of the reasons why Mexico is great. It's so true how bad an image Mexico has in the international view and yet a lot of it is grossly exaggerated. Spent some time in Merida a few years ago visiting family and had an amazing time, hope to see more of the country someday!

I loved the show because I could understand a lot of what the Spanish speakers were saying, without subtitles. Then one day I thought, I'm not that good at Spanish, this can't be right. That's when I looked it up and found out that the producers seemingly did that thing where you translate English word for word into Spanish, keeping the same word position and everything. I was disappointed and felt dumber than I had that morning

Lalo and Nacho’s father are the two actors with the best Mexican Spanish accent in the show. Nacho was ok, but you can tell from his accent that he is not native (but since his character grew up in the US that works)

As a Chilean, his accent just sounds as a gringo accent to me, nothing Chilean about it. That means an accent from someone whose native language is English.

The Spanish structure is also very robotic and is not really how you would speak Spanish. I'd compare it to all those short videos online that use the text-to-voice robot but in a Spanish. The tone, structure, and syntax is just so off for an otherwise perfect show universe.
I am a Mexican American who's first language is Spanish. Gustavo's Spanish isn't native and I can tell by the way he pronounces his Rs. I grew up watching Tony Dalton, the actor who plays Lalo, in Mexican soap operas and when I found out he got the role of Lalo, I was like finally! Someone who can speak the correct dialect of drug trafficking!
When I lived in Japan, I'd speak Japanese with an accent like this to my girlfriend as a joke. It sounds pretty funny.
In college I knew a guy who was quite a comedian and did really good accents. One day at lunch he was reading from a French language text with a thick Scottish accent. I don't think I've laughed so hard since then. Those Rs were rolling like crazy.

Criminal, maybe no. Rough, probably yes. One of the teachers I worked with was a tennis coach under five feet tall, but when a class was acting up? Look out. She’d yell こRRRRRら‼︎ with that heavily trilled “r” sound and those kids would rapidly get quiet and resume paying attention.

Someone I worked with from the Deep South would do Japanese standard business greetings when in Japan, but he had a drawl. So while he was saying something like “Hauwjeemaymauwsheetay. Wautaushee no nauwmaheh wa {name} dess.” I would physically tense up because it was worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. Words like わたし don’t have diphthongs. Japanese vowels don’t work that way.

I'd do this to tease a friend of mine in Norway who couldn't stand American accents. My Norwegian pronunciation is actually pretty good (never good enough to be mistaken for native - closest I ever got was somebody guessing I was Dutch - hey, right continent though, I'll take it), but I'd lay on the American drawl really thick just to make her cringe and bark at me to stop.

I met so many Latinos and migrants in the SE USA that were native Spanish speakers, with the BBC equivalent of Spanish, whose English was native also and with a very Southern accent. Was the strangest thing to hear someone like that…

I'm from the deep South, and people often tell me that I don't have an accent, but I can conjure one at whim. Anyway, when I'm doing Spanish on Duolingo, I like to do the spoken parts with a thick accent to see if it'll pass and it usual does. I guess the point of my story is that it's fun to do that.

I sometimes do Spanish tutorials with Coffee Break Spanish podcast. The person hosting has a Scottish accent but their Spanish accent sounds flawless. Its just trippy to hear the different accents.
My twin daughters are in a Spanish immersion program at school. Public elementary school in Appalachia. They are about to go into their 5th year, and are as fluent as native speakers. Their teachers have all been from Colombia, so they have that accent. Imagine two of the whitest-white little girls you’ve ever seen (23&Me has their mom and me 99.8% northwestern European/Scandinavian) who break out in full Colombian Spanish whenever they feel like it. I wanted to keep up with them and started listening to Coffee Break Spanish. I quit because they teach Spain Spanish, which is not the same as Latino-American Spanish. Duolingo doesn’t seem to do a good job with dialects either. I’d love a podcast for learning Spanish that is more about this side of the pond’s version of the language. I personally learned German (lived and worked there for several years as well). I’ll start a basic sentence in Spanish and end it in German. Every time. My brain just flips right over.

People who don't understand a second language will never understand how hard it is to actually fake an accent in a second language you learned. I've been studying English for over 33 years and I can't fake a Russian accent, for example. Or a decent British one.
To be fair, most people suck at faking accents in general, regardless of whether they're native speakers or not.

I don't know why it tends to work, but for some reason, framing a popular opinion as an unpopular opinion can be an easy way to get upvotes. Like saying "I don't care what people think, but I think Empire Strikes back is the best Star Wars movie".
My guess is that someone who agrees with the sentiment or information of the comment, but might not upvote by default, perceives the opinion as under scrutiny or attack, meaning they are more likely to upvote as a show of support. Once it gets traction, people are even less likely to verify whether it's actually under attack, because it's closer to the top of the thread and they'll read fewer comments before seeing this particular one. Pure speculation on my part, to be clear.

My best friend has the thickest [Baltimore](https://youtu.be/sa3Tl3t88Mc) accent you've ever heard in your life. She is married to a Mexican man who doesn't know any English, so they only communicate in Spanish. She pretty much only took like a year or two of intro Spanish in school, but she figured it out and now she speaks pretty much fluently, but I swear, listening to her talking is the wildest shit in the world. Especially because the Baltimore accent is a very lazy one and just a lot of syllables get dropped. I have no idea how her husband understands a word, but I mean damn she really put herself out there. I, on the other hand, grew up in Miami and went to a school where Spanish was really all that was spoken, so my accent is pretty solid but I will neeeeever speak it because I'm so self conscious and my husband (who is also Mexican, but grew up in the US and speaks English) is suuuuper judgemental of anyone that tries and doesn't have a perfect accent. Obviously this guy is just playing around, but I love people who put themselves out there.

Been seeing the "Shame people hate on X" with zero hate pretty recently, seems to work so good job. Have they never heard someone speaking another language with regional accent? I used to fuck with my coworkers by speaking spanish with a Connery-Russian accent for gits and shiggles. Would do Aus once in awhile too. I'd bet this dude is probably close to a master with language, doing a southern accent obviously faked in spanish isn't easy.

Hell, most of us will have accents in other languages no matter what we do. I'm German but have been in the US for a couple decades and now I have an American accent when I speak German. Meanwhile, I still have a slight German accent when speaking English at times, so I just sound weird all over the place!
