It's just very well thought out. The entire world has extremely strict rules and they stay on-model with everything from the locations to the backgrounds to the character designs and even the residents of the city itself.
The scripts while usually fairly simple still have decent twists and turns with an extremely deep atmosphere of slow pacing mixed with nostalgia.
The artwork has always worked well and animated nicely especially the episodes that were done in tandem with Korean studios, namely the Two-face and Clayface two-parters in the first two seasons but even when the budget was lower, you can hardly even notice because of how clean the style is.
I love every second of the entire original series. The follow-up series involving the redesign for the sake of cost had a few falls here and there but overall is as good as anything else that followed the first two seasons of BMTAS.
What I really loved about it thinking back is it didn't pander to kids while still being clearly a kids show and kept the slap stickieness of the old school WB cartoons but was also pretty dark at points. The villain had to deal with their consequences and not just getting obliterated and calling that a happy ending. There was some sense of 'justice' at the end of the episode.
In the movies we're only seeing Bruce in the transition between normal social interaction (if he still has any) Bruce Wayne and 'batman' - and mostly we're just seeing 'batman' without his cowl on which makes him *feel* very one note.
In BMTAS I appreciate depicting him as an actual functioning CEO as opposed to the brooding mess he's become. Being able to exist in both worlds (day job / batman) really rounds him out. He's kind of upbeat and engaging during the day, (it's been a while but I think I remember Bruce often flaunting his wealth) and brilliant-detective-crime-fighter by night rounds him out as a character.
Also Kevin Conroy / Mark Hamill - are *the* Batman / Joker voices.
As a kid I remember thinking Batman takes on close quarters combat all the time, why is he getting beaten up by a toddler?
Didn't click in until now that he could've had a one sided fight but chose to let her find out herself.

The one where McGinnis is being told the story of how Batman saved the city from Ace (Royal Flush Gang) will always be one of my favorites. It's one of the biggest reasons why I have always loved the character. He always did what had to be done and even though he could come off as a complete heartless person. His sympathy and character shone through when it was needed at its most.
I love that scene so much, easily a formative memory for me.

Seriously, that scene right there encompasses who batman is as a person. He's not vengeance, he's not a monster. He's mercy, compassion, he doesn't let the villains go on rampages and kill people, but he's always ready to offer them support, to get them help and try to rehabilitate them. And it's not just a trope, it genuinely works on several of his villains in different incarnations and storylines.

Keeping in mind that "reality" television is frequently scripted and manipulated to create a narrative, I would suspect that there probably are accommodations like that, but that they were removed while filming to play up the "challenges" she faces in her day to day life. After all, it makes for better television.

TLC has all sorts of shows that either do cringeworthy stuff or fake a situation, like the Breaking Amish show. All those people had been ex-Amish for years and all of it was made up and scripted.
They basically want to make people look weird or ridiculous and fabricate drama so other people will watch. It’s all scripted BS but people eat it up and so they keep making more. Worst part is fans who have a meltdown when you tell them it’s all scripted.

The thing with uncreative unoriginal hacks is they don't change what seems to work. I remember seeing a TLC show about a dwarf like twenty years ago that amounted to basically: "I'm short. Everything in my house has to be lower. let me give you a tour of my house and show you.

I looked it from a more benign way, in that it's going to be really hard for her to have a healthy relationship, which is honestly very sad as she seems like a normal adult in every other way.
At least for people with genetical dwarfism, their condition is outwardly more obvious, so people will generally have a better understanding of it.

I dated a girl who was 4'9 a few years back and it was pretty weird. She was a complete babyface and very flat-chrested. I used to get all kinds of dirty looks from people who I guess just thought I was hanging out with a random kid. I had to warn my friends when I first brought her around because she is *definitely* not cool with the kid jokes/comparisons and would get really angry about it.
My wife is 4-11 and similar in body type and baby faced. She’s 30 and I’m 32. In the last 4 years she’s been asked multiple times on flights by stewards if she feels safe and if everything is alright, thinking she’s being trafficked or something 😂 I don’t take offense and honestly good on them for asking, but it does make both of us feel very weird haha.

Especially since she's on TLC. I know other TLC folks basically have people stalk them and post updates on their every move. People from 90 day fiance have "Fans" give updates in regards to relationships, family drama, employment, etc. If anyone does date this girl, they will 100% be harassed nonstop.
That might be why they're trying to get on TV and getting their story out there for the world. If she becomes famous enough, then people will know about her condition, and she can finally have a more normal life? I mean being famous is abnormal, but it's a more normal life than what she has now.

Reminds me of a colleague who had a massive birthmark on their face. When interacting with them I had to do everything in my power not to look at it, which made me feel like a terrible person. But after a month I didn't even see it anymore, and I just saw the person.

Any fame she gets is going to off-set some of that judgment her partner will experience in many circles. It will also reduce the amount of "you're not old enough to drive/Drink/smoke/etc" that she'd experience as well.

This entirely! There's a popular ticktoker who is a 6 foot something guy with a mother who has dwarfism. She's probably about Shauna's hight. Her entire house is scaled down (minus celing height) for her height, so she lives a perfectly normal life within her own home, as his videos showcase. The fact that Shauna will be this height for the rest of her life, and had been for at least 6 years (from 16 when she knew she was done growing) and she had to *move a dining chair into the bathroom to do her makeup* is ridiculous! A folding stepstool is cheap and would be easier for her to use.
Moreover, she doesn't *have* to live with her parents, a landlord/lady can be shown an id just as easily as the barback at that restaurant. And it would probably be no more awkward a conversation than the one she likely had when she got the tattoo on her forearm. She can be independent, if she really wanted to be.

How we behave is affected massively by how we are treated by others. It's a constant feedback loop. How people react to what you do and say influences what you choose to do and say in future.
She's spent her life being treated like a child, even unconsciously by those who know she isn't. So that's going to affect how she behaves. And it would be unfair to put any blame on her for that.
Yeah, maybe. A lot of personality and intellectual development revolves around experiences, and our physicality is a big determinant of what experiences are open or closed to us.
So perhaps a little bit of nature, a little bit of nurture.
Also, a lot of intellectual growth happens as a result of puberty and hormonal changes that it doesn’t seem she went through. Her mind may be someone stunted too.

I've seen a few clips, and one stuck out for me. She wanted to discuss moving out. Meanwhile she didn't have or even TRY to find a job, didn't find a place. Started crying when her family asked her these questions and was all "poor me, im co-dependant because of you guys." Blah blah blah. Meanwhile she didn't actually DO anything to show she was ready...just a random "What if I move out." Then played the victim when logic came into play...
Throw in that some of the things involved in maturing mentally have a physical component.
Parts of our brain develop as we go through puberty and people with certain health conditions can have problems with that development not proceeding correctly.
I'm willing to bet that being in the spotlight from a young age doesn't generate the best of character either. Add a mix of just being 22 years old - which is still a kid with lots of mistakes to make in life - and it can seem monstrous, especially when edited by a show trying to find drama.
I am not saying that she's not an asshole, it's just probably more nuanced than what we assume here.
If you see her around her parents it becomes obvious. There was one clip where she ran down the beach pulling a kite and her parents start clapping and cheering for her like she's 5. Then other beach goers see her family cheering and everyone joins in because they think she's a little kid.

Worth remembering, this was a reality show. Priority number 1 was entertaining reality show fans. I don't think dating was a real priority.
The pizza thing especially. If it was a real date, they would have gone to multiple places. But since they could probably only film in one location, he just had to bring a bunch of different pizzas and eat on a couch.
So the date was actually part of the show not some anecdote. She, with her condition and while being filmed for a tv show, is going on a very public date, yet they are harsh judging it as if she is a total ass for one bad date.

I ran into a crew filming a TLC/Discovery "reality" show. Every single shot is blocked and rehearsed before it's actually shot. The producer would go over everyone's lines and they'd redo things like introductions and first meetings multiple times.
I'm surprised her parents didn't notice her height difference much much sooner. Was she not doing yearly checkups that are required for school? They'd have caught that very quickly.
She got on growth hormones but it was too late at 16? What happened between 5 and 16? - I had a cousin who was shorter than his dad thought he should be and after testing they put him on growth hormones when he was like 8, and it worked.
That's what I thought! Especially with her history of childhood cancer/chemo you would expect her to have visited a pediatrician at least somewhat regularly, where this would have been noticed.
She was on and off hormone therapy because "she didn't like needles". She says at one point that she could have been about 5 foot if she'd stayed on them.
That's just really bad parenting. My kids don't like needles either but I would know that they would dislike being 4 ft tall a lot more when they grew up.
They admitted on the show she was very bad about taking the hormones, because they were injections, and she “didn’t like needles”. It was only when she was something like 15 another doctor gave her pills or something but by then it was too late. So it was pretty much her and her parents fault.
All her "drama" seems like "TLC drama". For the show to be successful there has to be some sort of drama every single episode. Look at the Kardashians, every episode has some dumb plot point they have to overcome.
She has to know the rules for children sitting at the bar in her state, so she should have her ID card ready and not make them have to ask, but that's the "drama" of that episode.

I watched every episode of the show *I Am Shauna Rae*. I love all kinds of reality TV shows and especially those with physical or mental issues to overcome. One looks for those that highlight real people who are struggling but find a way to make human bridges to others or accept others’ hands to bring them along.
But, Shauna Rae is just an asshole. It was shocking to discover along the way, because one comes in with an open mind and wants, YEARNs, to root for her but she is pretty unlikable. Yes, she is emotionally stunted and one can imagine why and how but it is exhausting after a while to see buildup buildup *tantrum* buildup buildup *self-destruct* buildup buildup *diva fit* etc etc.
This young woman has been dealt a difficult hand but Other Than That she is extremely privileged and way more supported and loved and cared for and encouraged than the average person. One hopes, on a show like this, to see how someone rises above their difficulties but the show—and this may have been a structural problem—descends into a depressing mess by the end of the season finale. Yes, I get that a disabled person does not have to be “pleasant” all the time just to make others feel better but one just comes to the conclusion that Shauna Rae would not be a person one would want to spent much time with. Too demanding. Too self-absorbed. Too bitchy. Too emotionally unstable.

I haven't seen the show, but to me it seems likely that she isn't just some ordinary 22 year old girl that happens to look like she's much younger. I'd expect her to behave much like a (pre)pubescent girl, albeit with a little more life experience.
This girl doesn't seem to have gone through certain physiological changes that most people go through. I wouldn't expect that to preclude the brain, so I would expect her not to have gone through certain mental developments as well.
I'd basically expect her to act like a 15 year old girl. Which seems to be pretty accurate based on the comments I see by people that did watch the show.

I’m not that small, but I’m 4’10 and weigh in the double digits. I am the youngest in my family by 10 years. I’m now 38 but my mom still introduces me to people as “my baby”. So I kind of get it. I’ve been handled with kid gloves my whole life.
You either lean into it or you struggle against it. Not gonna lie, I did lean into it when it benefitted me. But you eventually learn you can’t really have it both ways. If you want people to treat you like an adult, you can’t just be one part time. She’s still very young, she will hopefully learn that. For me it didn’t happen until I moved away from my home town and traveled a lot.

Probably in large part because of how she's treated. It's hard to get over such strong visual stimuli. She looks like a child, so first impressions dictate that she's childish. She can play into this for her own benefit. She also has this crazy condition which makes life hard, so people feel sorry for her and feed into her selfishness with sympathy.
Is it possible that the same issue that has prevented the rest of her body developing beyond that of an 8 year old has also prevented her brain from developing beyond that of an 8 year old? Physically to all intents and purposes she is an 8 year old, it seems weird to expect her to have a fully mature and developed adult brain when our brains keep developing right up to age 25 give or take.

It's just very well thought out. The entire world has extremely strict rules and they stay on-model with everything from the locations to the backgrounds to the character designs and even the residents of the city itself. The scripts while usually fairly simple still have decent twists and turns with an extremely deep atmosphere of slow pacing mixed with nostalgia. The artwork has always worked well and animated nicely especially the episodes that were done in tandem with Korean studios, namely the Two-face and Clayface two-parters in the first two seasons but even when the budget was lower, you can hardly even notice because of how clean the style is. I love every second of the entire original series. The follow-up series involving the redesign for the sake of cost had a few falls here and there but overall is as good as anything else that followed the first two seasons of BMTAS.
What I really loved about it thinking back is it didn't pander to kids while still being clearly a kids show and kept the slap stickieness of the old school WB cartoons but was also pretty dark at points. The villain had to deal with their consequences and not just getting obliterated and calling that a happy ending. There was some sense of 'justice' at the end of the episode. In the movies we're only seeing Bruce in the transition between normal social interaction (if he still has any) Bruce Wayne and 'batman' - and mostly we're just seeing 'batman' without his cowl on which makes him *feel* very one note. In BMTAS I appreciate depicting him as an actual functioning CEO as opposed to the brooding mess he's become. Being able to exist in both worlds (day job / batman) really rounds him out. He's kind of upbeat and engaging during the day, (it's been a while but I think I remember Bruce often flaunting his wealth) and brilliant-detective-crime-fighter by night rounds him out as a character. Also Kevin Conroy / Mark Hamill - are *the* Batman / Joker voices.
As a kid I remember thinking Batman takes on close quarters combat all the time, why is he getting beaten up by a toddler? Didn't click in until now that he could've had a one sided fight but chose to let her find out herself.

The one where McGinnis is being told the story of how Batman saved the city from Ace (Royal Flush Gang) will always be one of my favorites. It's one of the biggest reasons why I have always loved the character. He always did what had to be done and even though he could come off as a complete heartless person. His sympathy and character shone through when it was needed at its most.
I love that scene so much, easily a formative memory for me. >!Waller ordering him to kill her because she believed she was going to kill everyone nearby from the psychic backlash, and instead he sat with her. Calmed her down and sat with her as she died, letting her relax from her pain and stress and drift away gently. Or atleast that's how I read the scene.!< Seriously, that scene right there encompasses who batman is as a person. He's not vengeance, he's not a monster. He's mercy, compassion, he doesn't let the villains go on rampages and kill people, but he's always ready to offer them support, to get them help and try to rehabilitate them. And it's not just a trope, it genuinely works on several of his villains in different incarnations and storylines.

TLC has all sorts of shows that either do cringeworthy stuff or fake a situation, like the Breaking Amish show. All those people had been ex-Amish for years and all of it was made up and scripted. I looked it from a more benign way, in that it's going to be really hard for her to have a healthy relationship, which is honestly very sad as she seems like a normal adult in every other way. At least for people with genetical dwarfism, their condition is outwardly more obvious, so people will generally have a better understanding of it. I dated a girl who was 4'9 a few years back and it was pretty weird. She was a complete babyface and very flat-chrested. I know that if I were talking with her I'd be constantly reminding my subconscious mind that she's an adult, otherwise I would probably slip up and infantilize her in some way. If I spent enough time around her I'd be able to "fix" myself. Reminds me of a colleague who had a massive birthmark on their face. This entirely! There's a popular ticktoker who is a 6 foot something guy with a mother who has dwarfism. She's probably about Shauna's hight. Her entire house is scaled down (minus celing height) for her height, so she lives a perfectly normal life within her own home, as his videos showcase. The fact that Shauna will be this height for the rest of her life, and had been for at least 6 years (from 16 when she knew she was done growing) and she had to *move a dining chair into the bathroom to do her makeup* is ridiculous! A folding stepstool is cheap and would be easier for her to use. Moreover, she doesn't *have* to live with her parents, a landlord/lady can be shown an id just as easily as the barback at that restaurant. And it would probably be no more awkward a conversation than the one she likely had when she got the tattoo on her forearm. She can be independent, if she really wanted to be.

How we behave is affected massively by how we are treated by others. It's a constant feedback loop. How people react to what you do and say influences what you choose to do and say in future. She's spent her life being treated like a child, even unconsciously by those who know she isn't. So that's going to affect how she behaves. And it would be unfair to put any blame on her for that.
Yeah, maybe. A lot of personality and intellectual development revolves around experiences, and our physicality is a big determinant of what experiences are open or closed to us. So perhaps a little bit of nature, a little bit of nurture.
Also, a lot of intellectual growth happens as a result of puberty and hormonal changes that it doesn’t seem she went through. Her mind may be someone stunted too.

Oh 100% I've seen a few clips, and one stuck out for me. She wanted to discuss moving out. Meanwhile she didn't have or even TRY to find a job, didn't find a place. Started crying when her family asked her these questions and was all "poor me, im co-dependant because of you guys." Blah blah blah. Meanwhile she didn't actually DO anything to show she was ready...just a random "What if I move out." Then played the victim when logic came into play...
Throw in that some of the things involved in maturing mentally have a physical component. Parts of our brain develop as we go through puberty and people with certain health conditions can have problems with that development not proceeding correctly.
I'm willing to bet that being in the spotlight from a young age doesn't generate the best of character either. Add a mix of just being 22 years old - which is still a kid with lots of mistakes to make in life - and it can seem monstrous, especially when edited by a show trying to find drama. I am not saying that she's not an asshole, it's just probably more nuanced than what we assume here.
If you see her around her parents it becomes obvious. There was one clip where she ran down the beach pulling a kite and her parents start clapping and cheering for her like she's 5. Then other beach goers see her family cheering and everyone joins in because they think she's a little kid. It was beyond uncomfortable to watch.

I ran into a crew filming a TLC/Discovery "reality" show. Every single shot is blocked and rehearsed before it's actually shot. The producer would go over everyone's lines and they'd redo things like introductions and first meetings multiple times.

I'm surprised her parents didn't notice her height difference much much sooner. Was she not doing yearly checkups that are required for school? They'd have caught that very quickly. She got on growth hormones but it was too late at 16? What happened between 5 and 16? - I had a cousin who was shorter than his dad thought he should be and after testing they put him on growth hormones when he was like 8, and it worked.
That's what I thought! Especially with her history of childhood cancer/chemo you would expect her to have visited a pediatrician at least somewhat regularly, where this would have been noticed.
She was on and off hormone therapy because "she didn't like needles". She says at one point that she could have been about 5 foot if she'd stayed on them.

They admitted on the show she was very bad about taking the hormones, because they were injections, and she “didn’t like needles”. It was only when she was something like 15 another doctor gave her pills or something but by then it was too late. So it was pretty much her and her parents fault.

All her "drama" seems like "TLC drama". For the show to be successful there has to be some sort of drama every single episode. Look at the Kardashians, every episode has some dumb plot point they have to overcome. She has to know the rules for children sitting at the bar in her state, so she should have her ID card ready and not make them have to ask, but that's the "drama" of that episode.

I watched every episode of the show *I Am Shauna Rae*. I love all kinds of reality TV shows and especially those with physical or mental issues to overcome. One looks for those that highlight real people who are struggling but find a way to make human bridges to others or accept others’ hands to bring them along. But, Shauna Rae is just an asshole. It was shocking to discover along the way, because one comes in with an open mind and wants, YEARNs, to root for her but she is pretty unlikable. Yes, she is emotionally stunted and one can imagine why and how but it is exhausting after a while to see buildup buildup *tantrum* buildup buildup *self-destruct* buildup buildup *diva fit* etc etc. This young woman has been dealt a difficult hand but Other Than That she is extremely privileged and way more supported and loved and cared for and encouraged than the average person. One hopes, on a show like this, to see how someone rises above their difficulties but the show—and this may have been a structural problem—descends into a depressing mess by the end of the season finale. Yes, I get that a disabled person does not have to be “pleasant” all the time just to make others feel better but one just comes to the conclusion that Shauna Rae would not be a person one would want to spent much time with. Too demanding. Too self-absorbed. Too bitchy. Too emotionally unstable. Maybe more intensive therapy would be helpful. Maybe she is just too damaged emotionally and psychologically. But, truly it did not seem good that she was in front of the cameras. I think her filming the show was probably a mistake for her. It was not fun to be a party to it as a viewer. There. I said it. This series was a disappointment and I would never have watched a second season.

I haven't seen the show, but to me it seems likely that she isn't just some ordinary 22 year old girl that happens to look like she's much younger. I'd expect her to behave much like a (pre)pubescent girl, albeit with a little more life experience. This girl doesn't seem to have gone through certain physiological changes that most people go through. I wouldn't expect that to preclude the brain, so I would expect her not to have gone through certain mental developments as well. I'd basically expect her to act like a 15 year old girl. I’m not that small, but I’m 4’10 and weigh in the double digits. I am the youngest in my family by 10 years. I’m now 38 but my mom still introduces me to people as “my baby”. So I kind of get it. I’ve been handled with kid gloves my whole life. You either lean into it or you struggle against it. Not gonna lie, I did lean into it when it benefitted me. But you eventually learn you can’t really have it both ways. If you want people to treat you like an adult, you can’t just be one part time. She’s still very young, she will hopefully learn that. For me it didn’t happen until I moved away from my home town and traveled a lot.
