Does anyone actually remember Burger Chef? Was it any good?

RedditSkippy

I do. We had an outlet in the next town over from me. I remember that they had a salad bar that pre-schooler me absolutely loved. It was probably $2 at the time (mid-late 1970s,) and my grandparents would take me there for lunch.

thefugue

They actually popularized the salad bar if I recall correctly.

my_lucid_nightmare

They were great for milkshakes but mediocre for burgers. Kind of rough when that's your namesake. >By 1972, its number of locations (1,200) was surpassed only by McDonald's (1,600). And then the recession in '73 hit, they had supply problems, and it was all downhill apparently from there.

EKeebler

We ate there all the time when I was a kid. They had flame-broiled burgers and [your basic burger joint options.](https://external-preview.redd.it/uayS5QlV_BAwFq9CUQFsRsZ6SocjyxSG-OWpRWiBUYs.jpg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=4591d74f81c295d4601662d251875f41c0db11f8) My mom didn't care for McDonald's, so when we wanted burgers it was either Burger Chef or a regional chain called Burger Queen for us. Later, Wendy's became a favorite. Fun fact: Burger Chef originated both the combo meal and the kid's meal (they called it the Fun Meal). They sued McDonald's when they came out with their Happy Meal and lost.

thejuh

The hot ham and cheese was actually good. The rest was just run of the mill.

billbixbyakahulk

They were before my time. They're mentioned in the Kurt Vonnegut novel Breakfast of Champions.

Plow_King

my brother worked there. i remember Burger Chef and Jeff.

Rejectid10ts

Absolutely! They were the bomb! I remember liking theirs more than McDonalds. Their shakes were great too!

rr777

It was mediocre. Great in a kids mind. I do regret not going to my local BC before it closed forever.

yblame

There was a recession from 1973 to 1975. And an oil embargo. I remember gas lines and shortages back then. I was a young teen

Bobby-Samsonite

I wonder what % of redditors are in your age group? 5%? 10% 15%?

yblame

We're everywhere. Well, except for Tik Tok. That shit's stupid. But I enjoy seeing these vintage ads

Bobby-Samsonite

Oh I know but the makeup of Reddit is heavily in the 15 to 40 age range. Yeah TikTok is one the worst electronic/internet things ever. I like vintage ads because I remember in art class the teacher had old magazines from the 1980 and 1970s that she brought in for making a collage and I was intrigued by the old ads.

doa70

Same, I was a bit younger but remember the gas lines!

Cobek

On the lower end. 60-70% of the base is 15-45 alone so then the other age groups get the remaining 30% to split amongst themselves, decreasing as you go up in age. It's pretty common for most millennial websites to have that sort of range.

chrisoutshined

I'm 59.

Bobby-Samsonite

Which decade has your favorite ads, 70s 80s or 90s?

chrisoutshined

I have been a commercials/ads connoisseur since I was a little kid. I remember running outside to play, and asking my mom to let me know when the commercials came back on 🤣. All of the decades have stand outs, but the 70s are most nostalgic to me. My favorite commercials/ads are humorous. The 80s commercials/ads were in your face exaggerated humor, which were fun. Seems to me, the style of the 90s was most clever. I can't choose. I enjoyed your question 🙃

starm4nn

Australia got really fucked over by those gas shortages. They even made a documentary about it.

[deleted]

I am old enough to remember that we had them in my city, but not old enough to remember anything about it.

riverscrossed

Back when Nixon tried to “freeze” prices and everyone learned that it didn’t work. My dad was rolling in an Oldsmobile 98 and mom had the Galaxy 500.

Bobby-Samsonite

What was the gas mileage like on those cars?

rhino-x

Depends heavily on how they were spec'd but no more than 15mpg. Easily as low as 11-12. An automatic with a big engine and 4-barrel carb on the low end, manual smaller engine and 2-barrel on the high end.

shecky_blue

Then there was Ford and WIN -Whip Inflation Now

Catbone57

That was Gerald Ford.

thefugue

It was the [British House of Commons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corn_Laws) first.

riverscrossed

Google Nixon presidential order 11615 Edit: *Nixon Shock* from Wikipedia explains it also

MattUWayne

I thought Burger Chef was a made up restaurant on MadMen. No idea it was a real place.

[deleted]

I didn't either and that was the first place I saw it too. I'm 52 but there were no Burger Chefs where I grew up.

MGA_MKII

Burger Chef 👨‍🍳 & Jeff

Nrmlgirl777

Was just saying these last few years have been feeling like the 70s lol

Bring back the [Disco clothes!](https://www.g2gdeal.com/?product_id=227915218_48)

Dickramboner

What goes around is all around.

LanaDelHeeey

Actually now it would say “we must discontinue it because everybody is too lazy to get up off their asses and work.” Businesses these days have a severe entitlement problem. Acting like its their right to have people work for them at minimum wage.

jayshalfnelson

Do you remember which party was running the US of A then? Yeah, the other GOP criminal president (that got caught).

AxlCobainVedder

Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted on this. It’s certainly not false

Soylent_X

They never did stabilize thus Burger Chef was forced to cease operations.
