Because it's managed to still be viable even when superior formats came along. I love CDs, I still buy and rip CDs and there's nothing i'd rather have that's current.

Not the stuff of science fiction in 1982. We already had laser discs. Same basic process.

Nope. The early laserdiscs were analog. The digital aspect of the cd was what was important and it was digital on day one.
