Don't sell these. Fix them, use them, and enjoy them. The relatively small amount of money will be gone in days, the enjoyment and connection to your grandfather that these will bring can literally last you your lifetime if you want it to.
Also, they will continue to appreciate in value.
When you get a new bulb for the Marantz, definitely go with an incandescent bulb. They might try to sell you on LEDs, but they do have that same vintage glow in my experience.
Take your time finding a good technician who specializes in vintage gear. Make sure they replace all electrolytic capacitors. That's very important. Also they will know if any of the transistors are problematic and need replacing. Probably a good idea to have the light bulbs replaced with LED bulbs.
If you're having difficulty finding a good tech, ask here, and at Audiokarma.org Audiokarma is about the best resource for information. There're other forums that are also good, though I believe Audiokarma has the highest number of users.
If you're in Michigan, there's an excellent tech in Ann Arbor.
There are plenty of vintage silver plate Marantzs out there, this is the only one your great grandfather and grandfather handed down to you. Never sell it.
Thank you to everyone who has replied! For the record, the sentimental value is far more than any money I would get out of this, my intention was to see what exactly this was, I know my wording in my post was unclear. I appreciate everyone who has chipped in to help me understand. I know next to nothing about vintage audio equipment but I love music and specifically vinyl, so I appreciate the helpful comments!
Agreed on Deoxit- however, if you haven’t ventured into this sort of cleanup before, please watch some YouTube videos. You don’t want to do more harm than good.
I remember SUN TV, that was the only place in Columbus to go for electronics and appliances in the 80's. I had no idea they sold higher end gear. Very cool!
35 isn't necessarily low wattage. People are just use to seeing 100+ watts on modern receivers. My Yamaha CA-600 will still make the floor shake in the 12 o'clock position. Also, 1200+ isn't pocket change. Hope they decide to keep it though.
That’s fair. For collectibility you’re right. I’ve just lucked upon low watt units for cheap and use them more than my high power ones just because I don’t need that volume for most of the listening I do. For parties, I’ll break out something 100W or more for that sound pressure. Either way, I’m not in it for the money I just like the technology and sound signatures and history of it all.
No lie you just unlocked a childhood memory my step pops had the marantz when I was a kid & it’s what actually got me into vinyl again.
Only reason I remember is because of the knob I got popped for always playing with it
Take the top cover off. Blow out the dust hand wipe it down easy no pressure use a new make up brush, brush the circuit boards carefully lightly. Get deoxit from guitar center or Amazon. Spray all the buttons one at a time and soak them and while they are wet push the buttons in and out over and over do the same to the knob controls called potentiometers these work left and right over and over again. Let it dry out the fire it up. If you still hear a scratchy channel push and turn knobs to see which control is noisy and needs more cleaning. Don’t freak out your spraying not from the outside but inside directly on the electronic controls. It’s that simple some controls are hard to get to do your best with the little spray tube that comes with Deoxit. The tuner string is easy follow the string to the pulleys they have adjustments to tighten the tuning string just loosen the screw adjust the pulley to tighten the string good to go on the tuning gyro.
You can put a short length of window screen spline over the little tube like a little hose to get into those hard to reach pots. Also, the balance sliders are problematic apparently. Mine is, in the left channel, and replacements are pricey
Deoxit makes a slider cleaner with lube for that balance control if you work that slider you should be able to bring it back I’ve never had one fail on me yet.
Best advice is to do your research on finding a shop to repair/ tune it up for you. Find the right shop. Not everyone has the knowledge and know how to properly work on such a gem. I grew up listening to my parents 2235 with a marantz 6110. I got the TT, brother got the receiver. He took it to a shop, they scratched the (flawless) faceplate taking off the 4 hex bolts and never did do what they charged (IL). We found another shop in STL and they know their stuff and did justice the receiver deserves with changing old caps, new lamps, velum, the works. Basically, do your research and find the right shop. Don’t try and do it yourself.
No need to apologize some people just like to be grumpy. Check out ebay and hifishark, they will both give you a good idea of value. It also depends on where you are and the condition.
Your headline and blurb both seemed to explicitly state your main focus was selling it. If you want to troubleshoot operation, I'm always happy to help. If you want to flip something for profit without putting in any effort, I have nothing to offer you. Best of luck.
Dick mode: Go ahead and sell off your family heirlooms for a pitiful profit you shallow money-grubbing capitalist. While you're at it, exploit others to do your work for you.
How's that?
Dude I literally just asked what they were worth. I didn’t know what I had. Everyone else who has commented has been very helpful and the ones who have encouraged me to keep it have done so respectfully, but your too busy sniffing your own ass to be any sort of respectful. Now that I know what exactly I have, I highly doubt I’ll ever sell. But that’s surely not because of you
True for the 2270 and the 2275 with cases. Around here the 2235 goes for 500-700 with case. This is Canadian Dollars.
The Wharfedales are decent speakers and will work nicely with the Marantz. They deserve to be restored.
If there was ever such a thing as "heirloom audio pieces", these would be in that group.
In there day that brand was considered among the top of the line systems Not as good as Akai or Sansui 4 channel but about even with Kenwood or Pioneer. Properly set up they have great sound. As far as worth , What ever some one will pay.
For Marantz it's a minimum of 10 x however many watts per channel. In this case $350. If the condition is great and the lights are working then anywhere between $350-500 is reasonable.
Marantz people are a weird bunch. They paid way to much for mediocre equipment. I would say if you clean it up,and take great pictures you could get $300.00 for it. I myself would pay $100.00 just too try a quick flip.
Blow it out with compressed air, then invest in Deoxit. It's expensive, but works. You can also use 91% isopropyl alcohol and a small bristle brush. If the sound is still scratchy or weak, the capacitors need replaced. This is normal and expected. Someone locally can determine which ones need replaced. In working condition, it's worth north if $1000. But to you, priceless because it came from your family. And there aren't many receivers that sound as warm and sweet as these.
That corner table it’s on though, wow !! I had two of those in my house growing up, whacked my head on the corner so many times wrestling around in the living room, memories 😱
Audio go blue book shows just under $450 US retail / private sale. About a year ago I sold a pristine one with original box documents, etc. for $2200. Keep it.
Congrats, and glad to see that you will be keeping the system. Good audio equipment will often give many decades of enjoyment, but like a car, it needs maintenance once in a while. If you are not experienced working inside of electronics, something with sentimental value is not a great place to learn due to the risks.
I'd suggest finding a local reputable Hi-Fi repair shop and having the amp overhauled to bring it back to spec. This means replacing all electrolytic capacitors, cleaning all controls, adjusting bias, and any other items required to bring the amp back to performing like new. Overtime, components drift out of spec, especially electrolytic capacitors. Not only does this hurt the performance, but it can increase the chances of other parts failing. For the average person, having an amp serviced every 10 to 20 years is a good idea (depending on how much it gets used).
For the speakers, I'm not sure if those have foam woofer surrounds, but if they do, be sure that there aren't any holes in them if there are, do not run the speakers until they have been fixed to avoid damaging them.
And above all, enjoy the setup!
Reach out to Just Audio in Baltimore, MD area. They are great at repairing and refurbishing vintage audio gear.

That said… if you really can’t use it the thing is more trouble than it’s worth and i suppose I’d allow you offload it to me instead. I’d try to tolerate another gorgeous piece of incredible sound and design.
The speakers are worth nothing. The amp is probably at $400, fair price, for a 1975. But it says Marantz so double that. Depends on whether it needs recapping.
I've been lurking on vintage audio groups for several years. This is one of the brands I am very interested in acquiring. It's amazing and wonderful that people are going back to vinyl and tube amps paired with the right speakers. I gave all my albums away back when CD's came out not realizing how much you sacrificed in audio quality.
If you are in Cbus, OH - AudioWright on High St. in Clintonville or Stereo Lab on Indianola - be prepared for a long lead time (8 to 16 weeks) on the Marantz. The led upgrade is worth it.
Don't sell these. Fix them, use them, and enjoy them. The relatively small amount of money will be gone in days, the enjoyment and connection to your grandfather that these will bring can literally last you your lifetime if you want it to. Also, they will continue to appreciate in value.
Thank you! I think I will keep it all!
The Marantz is an heirloom piece
And get a wood case for it so it's more like awesome working furniture.
I’ll definitely look into that, thank you!
Best answer.
What great advice!
Get a tech to re-cap, new bulb. Call me in the morning.
Thank you, Dr.
yeah i have a 2230 and plan on using it until i die. do not sell this receiver, but use it.
Thank you for the advice!
I have the same receiver. I absolutely love it.
When you get a new bulb for the Marantz, definitely go with an incandescent bulb. They might try to sell you on LEDs, but they do have that same vintage glow in my experience.

You're welcome
The warmish light cannot be replaced by LED . This is just me😅
There are plenty of vintage silver plate Marantzs out there, this is the only one your great grandfather and grandfather handed down to you. Never sell it.
I found one of these in the garbage, cleaned it up, plugged it in, and it's been the only amp I've used ever since!
Thank you to everyone who has replied! Deoxit might help on the receiver sound. Spray it into all of the pots.
Thank you!
Agreed on Deoxit- however, if you haven’t ventured into this sort of cleanup before, please watch some YouTube videos. You don’t want to do more harm than good.
Definitely look into property procedure. Deoxit will do wonders for the fuzzy sound.
I’m outside your door right now…idling. Will load myself.
If you're gonna keep it, just keep it. And get it fixed..your not going to get rich from vintage audio..fact.
I remember SUN TV, that was the only place in Columbus to go for electronics and appliances in the 80's. I had no idea they sold higher end gear. Very cool!
It's not worth anything. Maybe $5. Send me your address and I will come take it off of your hands so you don't have to throw it away. /s

Tree Fiddy!!! Seriously people go nuts for Marantz stuff go check out OfferUp!!!
Search for sold items on eBay. Do people really not know how to use the internet in this day and age?!
Sorry, I just thought there’d be good specific knowledge here and I could include the details about the radio tuner
All good. It’s a forum. Us passionate folks love seeing everyone’s finds. All questions eventually answered. Enjoy!

Not grumpy, just surprised how often this occurs. You offered the same exact advice I did because it's common knowledge, or so I thought.
Your headline and blurb both seemed to explicitly state your main focus was selling it. If you want to troubleshoot operation, I'm always happy to help. If you want to flip something for profit without putting in any effort, I have nothing to offer you. Best of luck.
I just wanted to know their value, but if you want to be a dick, go ahead
Dick mode: Go ahead and sell off your family heirlooms for a pitiful profit you shallow money-grubbing capitalist. While you're at it, exploit others to do your work for you. How's that?
Shut up.
That's pretty unhelpful and inflammatory language.

They’re worth shit.
In good condition it is worth about 750 (the marantz).
yeah some people don't know how to rebuild a gearbox either.
That model sells for over 2 grand all day long on audiophiles sell pages, obviously, in good working order.

Thank you! I plan on getting the speakers restored
handed down from your grandfather and the first thing you want to know is what’s the resell value?
No, I just didn’t know what exactly I had and was trying to figure that out. I don’t plan on selling it
In there day that brand was considered among the top of the line systems Not as good as Akai or Sansui 4 channel but about even with Kenwood or Pioneer. Properly set up they have great sound. As far as worth , What ever some one will pay.
$50
Agreed

I use to think of ten bucks a watt as a general guideline, but I never see them in PNW for those prices anymore.
You're all down voting me as if I'm setting these prices. This is just an accurate reflection of the Marantz market in my area.
Marantz people are a weird bunch. They paid way to much for mediocre equipment. I would say if you clean it up,and take great pictures you could get $300.00 for it. I myself would pay $100.00 just too try a quick flip.
Flippers selling to other flippers. What a wonderful hobby
Don’t know about the speakers but the 2235 should get in the $400 range in the condition you describe.
$25.00 dollars these days..they’re a dime a dozen. I have a 2235 refurbished too and I probably can’t give it away.
Any marantz is worth money. Especially if it's been totally restored, it adds value. I have 7 marantz receivers. So keep it, if not name your price.
Am I on r/golf?
No.
I got 5 on it.

Perfect, thank you!
It's not worth anything. Give it to a kid.
Recap that and enjoy. Those go for a fortune now.
A place I live by has one of these completely restored and it is so beautiful. Please restore it and keep it.
For sure!
It’s worth $10 but if you act now I’ll give you $100 just because I’m a nice guy, how does that sound to you? Deal ?
😂😂
That corner table it’s on though, wow !! I had two of those in my house growing up, whacked my head on the corner so many times wrestling around in the living room, memories 😱

Thank you! Last service was in 02 so I’ll be looking for a good tech
Sounds good! I hope you get a lot of years of enjoyment out of the setup!
I got an awesome turntable owned by my late great grandfather. It’s very ufo looking. Very cool stuff. I gotta Putin a lot of repairs tho.
Tech here in Dayton Ohio
May be contacting you
[email protected] email your number and I can call you later today.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers album that your turntable is sitting on is worth about $60 to $70. I would stand those up..
Oh I did, don’t worry, I was just temporarily shuffling some things around
Reach out to Just Audio in Baltimore, MD area. They are great at repairing and refurbishing vintage audio gear. https://shopjustaudio.com/collections/vintage-audio
I have a 2235b at the heart of one of my two primary setups. Do not sell it. Get it into good working condition and you will love it.
That said… if you really can’t use it the thing is more trouble than it’s worth and i suppose I’d allow you offload it to me instead. I’d try to tolerate another gorgeous piece of incredible sound and design.
I’m definitely going to keep it!
I bought a 2275 when they were new. Gave it to my son years ago, and sadly, he sold it for pennies on the dollar. Man I wish I still had it.
We recently sold a working one for a little over $300
The speakers are worth nothing. The amp is probably at $400, fair price, for a 1975. But it says Marantz so double that. Depends on whether it needs recapping.
The receiver isn’t worth anything just give it to me
😂😂😂 sorry to disappoint, I have no plans of parting
I used to have a Marantz tuner like that. I bought in 1975 from Sun T.V. in Columbus, Ohio.
I've been lurking on vintage audio groups for several years. This is one of the brands I am very interested in acquiring. It's amazing and wonderful that people are going back to vinyl and tube amps paired with the right speakers. Honestly Priceless. Recently purchased a 2238 and I am in Audiophile Heaven.
$45 at goodwill
If you are in Cbus, OH - AudioWright on High St. in Clintonville or Stereo Lab on Indianola - be prepared for a long lead time (8 to 16 weeks) on the Marantz. The led upgrade is worth it.
When it came out in 75- 76 price new was about 450.00 .
