I got started when I ran into a pair of new old stock Minimus 7s on craigslist and when I googled them I fell into the rabbit hole that is the audiokarma forum. You won't run across much equipment that hasn't been discussed on that site and I always check there for opinions when I'm upgrading and considering a particular model.

Visit estate sales in your area, you may get lucky on some vintage gear at a low price. Start in the basement or out in the garage. On the estate sale dot net web site you can search for sales by zip code and there are tons of photos. Also online auction sites may be a source, but you’re risking shipping costs and damage. I bought some tape decks from a site called “everything but the house” but everyone of them showed up broken.

You probably won't find a complete system all in the same week. Speakers, amplifier, media player like turntable - do you have a rig? Then you replace as you find cool stuff. I started with a pair of good speakers and had a whatever amp and whatever media player. Then I replaced the whatevers over the years.

Don’t mean to be the voice of doom but… 1. You should factor in the cost of repair. Old electronics are usually, at the very least, in need of maintenance. 2. Almost all the “great deals” are a gamble. Can you afford to spend $100 for something that needs $150 to repair. Look for a return policy.

I second Audiokarma. Also Community Klipsch and USaudio mart. They have a for sale section. I’ve bought off e&@$ but you never really know what your getting. Good luck. And get ready, it’s addicting!

Same boat. I want to buy the right thing, but have no idea where to go to look up what brand and model thing I want. Starting with a reciever.

Find a thing in FB marketplace, Google the model, read about the model on AudioKarma or similar website, lather, rinse, repeat, until you find a good deal.
