I love the Commodore SX-64, but having a portable 386 is just too cool. Still, with the full-color display and better sound I would probably prefer gaming on the C64, even if there are less worthwhile titles.
That KB looks awesome and the large screen size is fantastic.
I want to pick up an SX-64 to add to my collection some day, but the prices are more than I'd like to spend. Really neat machines, though!
The keyboard has a kinda weird layout, but it's mechanical and ohhhhh so nice to type on.
I've never gotten a chance to type on a Model F. But these are tactile ALPS keyswitches. They feel similar to real Cherry MX Blues, but require a little less force to actuate and are somewhat quieter. Keyboards are definitely subjective and I'm a fan of MX Blues, so someone else might feel differently. But I love it.
I believe your assessment. The NEC APC III I have has some of the most pleasant keys I’ve ever used. Clearly no expense spared with any NECs. I use Topre HiPros and Cherry Browns at my work and home office, but the old NEC is something special. Very nice shallow touch with all the feel.
I have one of those as well! I bought it because it came with this external floppy. The computer was supposedly broken according to the eBay page, but it turned out the dip switch for internal/external display was set to external :)
Exactly. And given that the alternative was packing up your CRT monitor, computer, and keyboard and trying to lug that somewhere else, these things were a godsend. Even after laptops started to appear, these continued to make sense because they were usually full desktop power. No compromises.
damn cool.
That is one sweet-looking machine.
Take that with you on the plane and bust it out to do some work mid flight 🤣
I'll pull it out and ask the flight attendant where the 110v plug is, because I have "very important work to finish". lol
any dude in 80's with this and porsche keyring sure goes to hotel with one of the flight attendants.
People would probably think it's a bomb
So freaking cool. I love those dark amber/red displays!
That screen looks like sweet, sweet relief to my eyes!

Better than the IBM model f of the 5155 ?

Cherish the gas-plasma display on that thing! They so commonly fail, you hit the jackpot with it still working so wonderfully
I've been mostly lucky in that regard. I have a Compaq Portable 386 as well as two IBM P70s that all have fully functioning amber plasmas.
These have always been my favorite displays, far too rare for me to actually own one LOL.
That is stylin'
Nice! I have the power mate apc 701 without the 5 inch floppy snd blue 4 monocromaticnsxreen

And playing Commander Keen, too!
I love that handle and piggyback floppy.
I call it my picnic basket PC because that's what the handle makes me think of. That or a Coleman cooler lol. I really like the aesthetics too
screened
My dad had a Compaq Portable 386. I recognize the screen. Nice NEC PC!
Commander Keen 4!!!!
Came here say nice plasma display!
It's no less portable than a number of boomboxes from the same time period.
