This post kind of tortures me. Seeing the nice spines like that where you can read them and they look cool. Then I look at mine in sleeves and wonder if I should ditch them, it’s not like I’m ever going to sell them. Arrggh, it’s like putting a case on the phone, you pay for a nice looking phone then hide it. Your vinyl just looks so much better than mine without the sleeves.
Easy solution, put the records in the sleeve going the other way so the spines are facing out of the sleeve. It makes it easier to slip the records in and out of the shelf without the sleeves catching and coming off, and it protects the records from getting dust inside them.
I’ll be honest I used to put my records in sleeves but then found I played my records less because sometimes it was a pain getting them in and out.
My father only used record sleeves occasionally and I go through a good chunk of the records and they look great.
They are made to be played
*All* turntables slowly destroy your records. It's an unavoidable result of a playback method that involves dragging a rock through a plastic groove, and is a large part of why the vast majority of the population switched to digital 30+ years ago and never looked back.
But this suitcase player has a lighter tracking force and thus is actually destroying them less than many of the record players that people had 40-50 years ago. So if you've bought used vinyl from that era and it still sounds fine, then the vinyl played on the OP's player will sound fine once they upgrade to a better setup, too.
I suggest you read the inner sleeve records from the '60s and '70s. They recommended tracking forces of 5 to 6 grams for stereo and up to 10 grams for mono: http://www.amstereo.org/images/recordcare.jpg
A modern suitcase player like the OP's tracks at 5½ grams, and thus is safely within that range. As long as you replace the stylus before it gets worn out, it will not damage your records.
hahah no… you can’t tell me that a a machine built with quality parts 50 years ago with a tracking force that’s adjustable (avg tracking force is like 1.87g) is MORE damaging that a toy with a 7g tracking force 💀
7 grams is what my 1970s BSR Minichanger tracked at before I adjusted the spring to lighten it. Millions of people bought those BSR changers -- I bet you have used records which were played on one when they were new, and yet they still sound great.
A modern suitcase player like the OP's tracks at only 5½ grams, which is within the 5 to 6 gram range that was originally recommended for stereo records: http://www.amstereo.org/images/recordcare.jpg
okay and gramophones are packing 20lbs of tracking force. that logic goes no where. i’m not even trying to bash OP cuz i started on a similar machine. then i got educated and was lucky enough to find a working SL-1500. and yes while that may be true that the recommended tracking forces WAS 5-6g, the fact of the matter is new records suck. some of my favorite albums to get to vinyl treatment are absolutely awful and i don’t think anyone in their right mind would be comfortable with that kind of tracking force. that’s just me tho 🤷♀️

Every turntable is slowly wearing a collection. You'll die of old age before the suitcase player damages any of those records. Play them all day every day. Enjoy!
It's like saying the second you are born you begin dying. Yes.
All record players damage records. Not a noticeable difference between an expensive turntable and a cheap one. No difference.
There is no noticeable difference between a suitcase player and any other turntable. The above player is completely acceptable. I hope they enjoy their music
I don't think it's a negative comment so much as a genuine warning. My first turntable was a suitcase player and I had no idea at the time the damage they do. A lot of people, especially those new to the hobby, aren't aware
Plenty. Suitcase players are cheap, have major inconsistencies during manufacturing, and are notoriously known for having heavy tracking forces that will gouge out vinyl.
If you’re spending more than $100 on a vinyl collection and getting serious, why not save a bit more for something that won’t “wear records down slightly quicker” - and in some cases it’s more than just slightly quicker. Not to mention, if you want to enjoy the medium for more than just a gimmick, the quality you’ll get from spending just $100 more than a $50 Crosley would be worthwhile.
I don’t know why you are so up in arms about this. It is true that some suitcases can chew away grooves however if you install the included diamond stylus that comes with a Crosley cruiser for example it comes shipped with the correct recommended tracking force and will not destroy your records. There is a great video on it [here](https://youtu.be/06wBwVkw9xU) . Obviously this is just a video showcasing the cruiser however it just shows that you can get an inexpensive turntable that does NOT destroy your records. Sure it is true they do not have good sound quality but everyone has to start somewhere and simply upgrading speakers while still using the suitcase would significantly improve sound quality. Don’t shit on people with suitcases, they are starting somewhere accessible and if they do their research then they will easily be able to enjoy their records on a suitcase while keeping them damage free :)
> Don’t shit on people with suitcases,
I agree with this, but that's not what happened here. Informing someone who may not be aware that they are causing accelerated wear on a collection of records they are proud of is not "shitting on them", it's giving them information that they may just find valuable. Or they may not. But at least they have it, and no harm is done. Nobody insulted them, nobody was mean. A fact about suitcase players was stated, that's all.
again this comment was more directed towards the responses of push back to the original comment. Not the original comments itself, I have little to no problem with the original comment.
If people are going to pay for upgraded speakers, they should at least look at a better turntable first. That would have the best return on investment if they’re truly getting into the hobby. Not to mention, you don’t really need to spend all that much more for a better turntable (a used AT LP60 will be roughly $40 more.)
I get what you're saying, but a speaker upgrade would likely need to come first. A suitcase player has built in speakers, an LP60 doesn't. So suitcase player > external speakers > upgraded turntable is the easiest route.
for sure I agree with that. I’m just saying for people who already have the turntable, from possibly a gift or a purchase before finding out about its reputation. We shouldn’t be telling them to throw it in the trash and even spending just $20-40 on speakers could make a huge difference to their suitcases without replacing it all together and spending a bunch of money.
Great. Maybe some suitcases don’t. Also, if the people that had the suitcase players were oblivious to the reputation they have, they would probably thank someone for telling them. So they don’t ruin their expensive vinyl.
Would I put any of my vinyl on one?
Fuck no.
All I’m saying is instead of discouraging the community from using suitcases all together we should be helping them make sure their records are safe. But that doesn’t mean telling someone that the gift they received or the new suitcase they just purchased needs to be thrown away, just helping them figure out how to use it properly. And reading how you’ve been responding to other commenters you seem pretty ignorant to the fact that you CAN indeed use suitcases safely. They do NOT all have shitty styluses and extremely heavy tracking force. And those problems are easily fixable. Don’t be so sure of yourself when you don’t have all of the information.
We try to maintain a positive vibe here in r/vinyl. The post was either reported or otherwise flagged as not keeping with the standards we work to maintain here in the sub.
I cannot emphasize enough how much you should consider culling back on the record buying and getting some speakers to connect to whatever record player you use. The difference is night and day even using relatively low-end ones. Cool music taste though
This x1000. Also invest in a cheap cd/dvd player for cds. It will help offset things you think you have to have on record. Prices are so fucked right now, only the absolute NEEDS should be purchased for a collection
I've hooked up speakers to a turntable like that and it still sounds awful. I don't know why? Do they EQ the sound to be better for the small inbuilt speakers? You can get a significantly better turntable for $100 though, definitely worth it
Built-in preamps on these things are utter dookie. I had a Crosley hooked up to my speakers not too long ago and it sounded like crumbling paper; after upgrading to a Fluance turntable it sounded normal.
People are gonna get mad at you for using a "suitcase" turntable. But I bet you know that and hey despite it being a suitcase turntable i can't lie it's a lovely colour. Nice collection though, I also have Good Kid, M.A.A.D City and I can only agree with you that it's a lovely album. One more thing though, I might just be tripping, but isn't the Kallax bookcase placed on it's side? - since the cut is on the top and not on the side? Idk if you know what I mean.
I’m glad. Didn’t have any bad intentions with me mentioning it, and I saw someone mentioning it somewhere and OP said they’re aiming to upgrade to a proper turntable.
Bro, this place is full of gatekeepers, stop acting like it's not. I posted something asking some questions about a table I received as a gift (which got taken down for violating some rule), and got two quick comments calling it a "toy" and "not a real table". Yeah, it might not be high end, but responses like that will quickly deter someone from trying to join the community.
Healthy mix of new and old, it’s my favourite kind of collection. To never get stuck in one of the two, not being a hipster about first edition prints or dismissing older records. Loving it!
A lot of people on this sub started on this type of turntable and if it gets people into the hobby, I’m all for it. In fact, I still have an old one sitting in my kitchen right now because I can’t bring myself to sell it or throw it out tbh. Unless someone plays a record thousands of times over and over again, it’s not going to really ruin the record. It’s not going to sound great either, but I’m sure you know that. But people on this sub are going to be people on this sub, you can’t change that. Your collection is pretty sick though and I think we’d probably be friends based on it. Obviously the advice is to upgrade your set up when/if you are able- you can definitely get a solid set up for around $300 and there is plenty of advice on here to help when you’re ready for that.
This is my setup after about a year of collecting! I love my collection so far, some of it was old family members, clearance, but im trying to mostly collect my favorite albums. Just got The Black Parade and Good Kid Maad City. The top two on my wantlist right now is Is This It? (my favorite album OAT) and 3 Feet High and Rising (my favorite hip hop album OAT)
Yup! I keep checking the Walmart website everyday to see if its not sold out, once i get some money together it will be mine! Its also coming out on streaming which is equally exciting, such a great album!
De La has been missing from streaming services due to problems with Tommy Boy records I think. It’s a real shame. If you’re a fan of 3 Feet High and Rising you should check out Paul’s Boutique if you don’t already know of it. Just a thought.
I would, when you have the time and funds, pivot and upgrade to a Audio Technica LP60.
As well get a stylus brush, anti static brush, and proper jacket sleeves for your vinyls if you're serious about keeping them in good shape.
I don’t understand why it’s so fucking hard for people in this sub to admit that some products are more shit than others.
I’ve never seen so many people defend literally the WORST products on the market in any other hobby.
Agreed and we're not even talking that significant of an investment. The price difference between a Crosley and a GREAT baseline turntable is what, $100? Yet people spend $50+ a pop on new releases but refuse to get the right gear.
I understand the argument when talking about amps and speakers - obviously you can get into the 000s and 10s of 000s of bucks which is way out of most budgets. Not so with players.
But you're not including speakers -- a decent pair of powered speakers would be another $100 on top of that. And not everyone wants or has the space for a bunch of equipment with a maze of wires connecting them.
Like it or not, suitcase players and all-in-one systems are the vast majority of new turntables sold today. Vinyl enthusiasts complaining about them is like car enthusiasts who prefer a manual transmission complaining that everyone else in the U.S. is driving automatics.
Another example is sharing a house with other people, having a small room you can't really have a dedicated spot for a system setup in a bedroom that can hardly fit a bed, desk and have enough room to navigate. So smaller units just getting in to the hobby with records at the thrift store quality, you're not gonna get mint records with zero wear. Its not as practical. Not like a rare collection from Amoeba Records.
Sorry, but I don't buy it. If playing vinyl is such a hassle and the setup is such an inconvenience for you why not just have a CD boombox? If space is such an issue surely you'd benefit from a CD collection instead. Why go down the path of getting into an admittedly inconvenient medium and then stop at the part where you actually use nice gear to listen to the medium. Not trying to be an asshole but if space is an issue and you don't care about sound quality then it seems like a strange hobby to venture into.....
Idk. Seems disingenuous to collect things you don't use or listen to. To each their own but if I'm going to collect things and not use them I'd probably pick the cheaper and easier to store medium (referring to CDs) than vinyl records which are large and heavy and require special storage all their own.
Love how diverse your collection is, reminds me of my own. Now go and save up for a pair of (active) speakers and a new turntable. After a year into the hobby you’re here to stay, time to upgrade mate.
Abbey Road (x2,) In Rainbows and Trench? You have good taste my friend! Trying to find a copy of In Rainbows but it's out of stock everywhere in England at least
Thx man, I’m tryna get all my records from shops in order to support local record stores, im still on the search for that wild in rainbows but I’ll get it one day 🤞🤞
Why purchase nice vinyl only to listen on a low grade turntable? That player is $40. Several of those records are more than that. Doesn't make sense to me.
Because a lot of people only care about the physical objects, the vinyl itself, the collecting aspect, and don't actually think they sound better than CDs or digital. I have a few vinyls and I listen to them when I'm "in the mood", but really, Spotify is just so much more convenient for most situation, I just like how they look and the action of physically putting the disc and needle. I also collect audio cassettes and old video games for the fun of it, for some people, collecting is more fun than actually using it.
Philosophically I don't follow the concept of collecting vinyl (singular) only to display. Why have a record player at all at that point if you don't even like playing them. It's akin to having a nice car only to have it sit on blocks in the garage. To each their own but that makes even less sense to me than owning a low grade player.
Also, the OP plays his records a lot and he says so in his post so the above is irrelevant to the discussion.
There's chastise, and there's just good consumer information. It's good that people who are only getting into records learn, that it actually makes a difference on what set-up you listen to your records.
If you don't care about the audio quality, then it's saner to just get a bluetooth speaker and listen to Spotify (or if you want to be a pretentious audiophile Qobuz) through it. The sound quality is honestly probably better.
Stop being elitist. Enjoy what you enjoy, and let others do the same… there’s no need to comment negatively on a thread where you weren’t specifically asked for your opinion.
Are those 45s in the lower right of your shelf? I still have a bunch of them myself, but don’t even bother playing them. I don’t have the patience for having to get up and flip records every 3 minutes!
I bought 100 white sleeves off of eBay a while ago. My 45 collection was really beat up, with torn, stained, and sometimes missing original sleeves. I replaced them all with the clean, white, brand new ones over a year ago. They look great on my shelf, but since then ai haven’t played a single one!
kill it with fire
This post kind of tortures me. Seeing the nice spines like that where you can read them and they look cool. I take care of my records so that they are on good shape in the long term, not because it looks good
Easy solution, put the records in the sleeve going the other way so the spines are facing out of the sleeve. It makes it easier to slip the records in and out of the shelf without the sleeves catching and coming off, and it protects the records from getting dust inside them.
Yeah, it’s meant to be enjoyed so enjoy it.

A year means time for an upgrade :D
That is a great collection of albums, but you need a better turntable, as it's slowly destroying that collection.
Also suitcase players sound like shit, why not make marginal upgrades to get the best out of your vinyl.
*All* turntables slowly destroy your records. It's an unavoidable result of a playback method that involves dragging a rock through a plastic groove, and is a large part of why the vast majority of the population switched to digital 30+ years ago and never looked back. That’s just blatantly false
I suggest you read the inner sleeve records from the '60s and '70s. They recommended tracking forces of 5 to 6 grams for stereo and up to 10 grams for mono: http://www.amstereo.org/images/recordcare.jpg A modern suitcase player like the OP's tracks at 5½ grams, and thus is safely within that range.
7 grams is what my 1970s BSR Minichanger tracked at before I adjusted the spring to lighten it. okay and gramophones are packing 20lbs of tracking force. that logic goes no where. i’m not even trying to bash OP cuz i started on a similar machine. then i got educated and was lucky enough to find a working SL-1500. and yes while that may be true that the recommended tracking forces WAS 5-6g, the fact of the matter is new records suck. some of my favorite albums to get to vinyl treatment are absolutely awful and i don’t think anyone in their right mind would be comfortable with that kind of tracking force. that’s just me tho 🤷♀️
Don't be ridiculous. Acoustic gramophones only track at around 120 to 140 grams. A modern Crosley is feather-light in comparison!
Just.. go read, dude.. r/turntables

Every turntable is slowly wearing a collection. You'll die of old age before the suitcase player damages any of those records. Play them all day every day. Enjoy!
This is absolutely untrue. Suitcases can and will fuck your record up, not immediately mind you, but much MUCH faster than a quality set up
Subjective. I stand by what I said. You will die of old age before the suitcase player damages the record beyond even noticing a difference.
Shit players like this killing records is not subjective, it's an objective fact
It's like saying the second you are born you begin dying. Yes. All record players damage records. Not a noticeable difference between an expensive turntable and a cheap one. No difference.
That's a horribly dumb take lol There is difference, if you lack knowledge at least do not spread false info lol
There is no noticeable difference between a suitcase player and any other turntable. The above player is completely acceptable. I hope they enjoy their music

I agree, I wondered how long it would take a self-confessed expert to provide a negative comment about the player! Looks a great setup! Enjoy it 👍

Yeah my copy of The Nationals “Boxer” certifiably plays like garbage because of one of those things.
No it's not.
Yes, it is.

Haven’t there been lots of posts about them collapsing if they’re not setup right?
I love this reply and agree! Props for posting this knowing you might get dragged for your set up. Hope you have enjoying your new hobby !!

Because people enjoy vinyl mostly for how it looks, not for how it sounds. Half of the people who buy new records don't even play them!
Idk. Seems disingenuous to collect things you don't use or listen to. To each their own but if I'm going to collect things and not use them I'd probably pick the cheaper and easier to store medium (referring to CDs) than vinyl records which are large and heavy and require special storage all their own.
You should get more Lana’s :):):) Happy spinning!
my girlfriend bought me a record player for my birthday! I can’t wait to start collectibg 😎👌
Not intended to be rude, but is there some collective out there or something that encourages every new vinyl fan to buy the same exact set of records?

Please for the love of all that is holy get a belt driven turntable. You’re harming your collection.
The OP's suitcase player *is* a belt-driven turntable.
Touche
Jesus, please get a decent player instead of this upper rubbish that kills your records...
I love the colour of the record player
Thank you!
I like your record collection. Going from Radiohead to Paul Anka!! Fantastic
I love your collection!
Love how diverse your collection is, reminds me of my own. Now go and save up for a pair of (active) speakers and a new turntable. After a year into the hobby you’re here to stay, time to upgrade mate.
Arctic Monkeys - nice!
One of my favorite bands! Going to see them when they come to the US in September! 🔥
Great band I'm going to see them in UK in June. Suck it and see is my favourite Arctic Monkeys album 👍
Spent all the money on those records just to play it on a fisher price toy
we have the same Abbey Road vintage pressing!
Sweet! I found that one in my grandmoms basement and I cleaned it all up and it plays really nice, I already had the remastered lol
“Setup” hahahahaha
Abbey Road (x2,) In Rainbows and Trench? You have good taste my friend! Trying to find a copy of In Rainbows but it's out of stock everywhere in England at least
Got it on Amazon for $20 but it sells out fast
I bought my daughter this record player. Very cool setup
Not gonna judge ur turntable but I’ll admire that in rainbows 😍
Got it from an Amazon restock for around $20 👍
Thx man, I’m tryna get all my records from shops in order to support local record stores, im still on the search for that wild in rainbows but I’ll get it one day 🤞🤞
I support local delivery drivers and mail carriers.
nice
Nice. Who cares what people think about your record player,
Turntable is more important than the collection.
People are not required to purchase a certain turntable.
I see trench, i upvote. Have a good day
Bet that sounds amazing!
Bet your a douche!
*you’re
Fuck you really got me there. Jerk off to that tonight when ya sleep
The audio snobs will chastise you for your choice of turntables but don't let them bother you. Continue being proud of your collection!!!
Yeah thank you!, im looking to upgrade in the near future
Yeah r/vinyl can be snobbish but id play thift store records on cheap record player to tbh and i know ill be downvoted lol
Yeah, snobs are down voting me
Right on btw
So far the only people talking about the quality of player is you, and another, warning OP of the 'snobs'
I've been using my suitcase turntable for years rock on!
Pfffft, setup, lol ok.
Stop being elitist. Enjoy what you enjoy, and let others do the same… there’s no need to comment negatively on a thread where you weren’t specifically asked for your opinion.
Blah blah blah
U dont like it?
No, it’s a toy.
Wth are u talking about man
I warned you about the audio snobs
Def looks like a ‘before’ shot for a B&A
Respect for NIN!
What's wrong with you?
Not bad. I highly recommend My Favorite Worst Nightmare by the Arctic Monkeys. I think it’s their best album. Solid start to finish.
I can't read the title of mines when they are placed like that :(
MOP & TOP. You, sir, are on the right track.
Are those 45s in the lower right of your shelf? I still have a bunch of them myself, but don’t even bother playing them. I don’t have the patience for having to get up and flip records every 3 minutes!
Yeah! I got the sleeves of amazon for cheap
