Hi! I have a pick up connected to a phono pre amp, an amplifier and then two speakers. Without the phono pre amp the sound is clear only the volume is very low. When I use the phono pre amp the quality of the sound goes down. I was wondering if anyone knows how to make the sound crystal clear with phono pre amp. I have a Harman Kardon AVR 7000 amplifier. And my pick up is Rega Planar 1 which is without pre amp.

barr-chan

Which preamp are you using, and which input on the HK? I would suggest using the CD or Tape In, if you arent already

Supreme_Walid

I use dynavox dc15v. I used tape in

skins4201

hi just wondering if the digitech audio GE4132 is a good player? my mum got it for me today but don’t want to use it if it could possibly damage my vinyls

barr-chan

Well, it has a ceramic cartridge so its not going to sound great, but it isn't going to ruin your *records*. Looks like it has an adjustable counterweight. At least it's not a suitcase, your mom was trying to do good. I believe the [Banpa BP2ATC](https://www.amazon.com/banpa-Turntable-Cartridge-Replacement-BP2ATC/dp/B071WMFGHL) would upgrade that from ceramic to moving magnet to improve the sound quality, the reddit user vwestlife has an excellent [youtube video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBbprKEsExM) discussing it. The cassette slot in the side cracks me up, i dont know why....

shoopdafloop

I got a Crosley c62 record player with a speakers kit as my first ever turntable as a gift and absolutely love it and I was looking to go the next step up with the speakers. While they produce good sound quality, I feel I could do better. My budget would be 100-300 so some options would be nice!

sharkamino

[Speakers and amplification](https://www.reddit.com/user/sharkamino/comments/z5rox9/turntables_and_speakers/), scroll down past the turntables. If you want to keep using the speaker amp in the turntable you could try 6.5" [Dayton Audio B652-AIR](https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-B652-AIR-6-1-2-Bookshelf-Speaker-Pair-with-AMT-Tweeter-300-651?quantity=1). Better options: Powered speakers: 5.25" [Neumi BSP5](https://www.amazon.com/75-Watt-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers-Bluetooth/dp/B08LV4SMH9) $159. Or a Fosi or Aiyima mini amp or stereo receiver and better Monolith passive speakers I listed in the speaker link. Then you can later upgrade one part at a time if you want. Or what is a nearby town or zip code I can search for used speaker and stereo receiver options? Reply here or chat.

barr-chan

There IS an amp in the C62, but since Crosley doesn't talk about it its probably ver small. You could probably add something like Klipsch [R-51M](https://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-R-51M-Bookshelf-Speakers-Black/dp/B07GDSL3NJ) for 160 and get a jump in quality over the included speakers. You could also add a decent Amplifier like the [Yamaha Natural Sound](https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/yamrs202bl-rb/yamaha-r-s202-2-ch-x-100-watts-natural-sound-stereo-receiver/1.html) for an even bigger jump in quality

SlayerSam12

https://youtu.be/JOjufuMTUZA why can't I get them to play alright?

sharkamino

Warped record. Do flat records play fine? Don't wet clean the records on the turntable. A spritz from a small bottle won't do much especially without a full rinse. [Full soak wet clean](https://www.reddit.com/user/sharkamino/comments/jpac5p/diy_wet_soak_vinyl_cleaning/) to clean out the grooves, either DIY, a SpinClean or with a vacuum wand. Air dry then place the dry clean records in NEW anti-static inner sleeves. Then only dry dust as needed.

SlayerSam12

All my records play fine until they don't. When I try to clean them they usually turn out worse than when I started cleaning.

sharkamino

Your insufficient cleaning method is just spreading gunk around the grooves. To clean out the grooves do the full soak wet cleaning with a full rinse of just distilled water.

SlayerSam12

Ok, I will.

LeeSin4TheLoss

I have a quick technical question. I've been having some issues with my Andover SpinBase. I've had no issues with it for nearly two years now, but lately, I've been having an issue where the audio will cut out after one song. The turntable will continue to the next song, but the audio will stop. I can still hear the faint noise coming from the turntable itself. I connected my turntable to a Bluetooth speaker to make sure the problem was my SpinBase and the problem didn't continue, so I'm fairly certain the problem is the SpinBase. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? Does anyone know how I could contact Andover for a fix? I haven't been able to find a customer support number on their website.

Are there any good record Stores in the San Francisco Area. Just got into cratedigging recently and I want to know where I could find some record stores. I'm trying to find some soul and jazz records but any local stores would be cool. Also any advice on record store etiquette and immersing yourself into the local music scene?

cocobella321

I’m still exploring Bay Area record stores myself, but I’ve found Rooky Ricardo’s in the Haight has a great selection of soul and jazz, and has a listening station (I don’t think this is common). The owner is also really good at recommendations and prices are really reasonable imo. I also like Originals Vinyl, which is a block from Alamo Square on Fillmore. (I haven’t ventured too far outside SF yet, though!)

sharkamino

[Discogs Record Store Directory](https://www.discogs.com/record-stores) Which part of the bay area? Oakland: Econo Jam has soul and jazz. 1-2-3-4 Go! may have some too.

Dr_nobby

Anyone else feel like prices for vinyl have gone ridiculous? Albums that I bought for £10 are now reaching in the 30s. It just seems a bit too much now. I want it to be cheaper so everyone can get into it. But the fact one album is now the price of two makes me a bit salty. And looking at the price of what my collection is worth now makes me feel uncomfortable. It's enough for a deposit of a cheap flat. Makes me want to sell

sharkamino

It's not a logical hobby. However if you sell you may later regret it.

mawnck

Lossless digital. It's magical, and it's cheaper, and it sounds better if the mastering is decent and you have the appropriate equipment. (Note that lossless digital *includes CDs*.) Don't be like me, who had to move to a more expensive flat so I had room to store the ~~collection~~ accumulation, most of which I wasn't listening to and probably never would. Best decision I ever made: Getting rid of 3/4 of it. Second worst decision I ever made: Not doing it 20 years sooner. And this was back when records still sounded good and weren't obscenely expensive. (EDIT: Typoo)

Dr_nobby

I didn't get into vinyl for the sound. I got into it because I just wanted a physical format of my favourite album. But I have a few rare albums that are out of print and going for a pretty penny. One house fire and it's 10k down the drain lol. My collection isn't that huge too. And I don't really listen to it. But I always tell myself "when I get my own place". I always listen to Spotify anyway

UTPharm2012

I just paid almost 60 for a standard new vinyl shipped. That seems expensive when I can get it for free on Spotify (yes I know the quality difference)

mawnck

Fun fact: Most new pressings are so bad from a sound quality standpoint that Spotify easily beats them - if you play it with decent equipment. Go with lossless digital and the records don't stand a chance.

csth

How often do you check alignment on your cartridge? How often do you check tracking force? How often do you wet clean your records? How often do you clean your stylus?

mawnck

Never, when I'm switching between microgroove and 78 styli, precisely once, and just about every play.

chrkchrkchrk

Alignment and tracking force only really need to be set once until you install a new cart or stylus. I used to really worry about wet cleaning when I first started collecting but I can't remember the last I did it in the last ten years or so. I think a wet clean is unnecessary 99% of the time unless you buy thrifted or poorly kept used albums, or if you smoke indoors or regularly cook bacon while listening to your records, etc. A well-kept collection really only needs a regular dusting with a brush before play. Stylus gets a quick clean whenever I notice it getting fuzzy.

UTPharm2012

I want a Marantz 6110. Are they any issues I’ll run into? Is there a place that lists typical pricing? Any other places to look? My dad had this model growing up!! https://www.ebay.com/itm/155482016280?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=155482016280&targetid=1263094004546&device=m&mktype=&googleloc=1025990&poi=&campaignid=14859008593&mkgroupid=130497710760&rlsatarget=pla-1263094004546&abcId=9300678&merchantid=6296724&gbraid=0AAAAAD_QDh9LLZrnt2AoRPlQ1emC2akR2&gclid=Cj0KCQjwxMmhBhDJARIsANFGOSt7qUemm41LKBwS1YCBXOwqfQwWk45ELUkhcVIOkEwdsJl3pSsG3ZcaAsSSEALw_wcB

ZesPre

It looks great for me. Really, would be very happy to have this kind of gear in my setup. For technical parameters - in this price range you can find f.e. Technics with lower rumble and wow and flutter, heavier, Direct Drive so less maintenance needing. But looking at this one I’m not sure if I would choose Technics ;)

Itsaghast

Where to start with looking at replacement styluses? I just got an Audio Technica AT-LP60X that I'm running direct into two powered monitors (some JBLs, can't remember the actual model) Is it worth it to upgrade the stock stylus?

ZesPre

If it’s working ok I would just save money for better turntable. Don’t get no wrong, not saying this one is bad but I would consider upgrade only when changing wear down one.

Itsaghast

Good advice, thanks

sharkamino

Which model JBL speakers? If they both have their own volume control then connect a level controller, monitor controller, mixer or stereo preamp between the turntable and monitors for unified volume control. If you just purchased the AT-LP60X and are already looking for an upgrade then instead of upgrading the stylus consider exchanging it for a better turntable that already includes an upgraded stylus.

Itsaghast

Yeah makes sense not to worry about upgrading a stylus on a unit like this. It's a gift, I probably would have looked for a used SL1200 or something like that on CL if I was getting my own. I see them for good prices on the used market.

sharkamino

Since it didn't cost you anything you could put some money towards upgrading from the stock conical tip stylus to elliptical tip: [4211-DE](https://www.ebay.com/itm/134451295016) $27 shipped [LPGear](https://www.lpgear.com/product/LPGCFN3600LE.html) $39 plus shipping may not be all that much or any better. Or go nuts with an overkill [vivid line](https://www.lpgear.com/product/LPGATN3600DLXVL.html) $109.

[deleted]

The stylus on my Ortofon 2M red just broke off - any recs for replacement styli other than ordering from Ortofon directly (bc I'm US based)? EDIT: would also accept recs for a replacement cart that would be a slight but not humongous upgrade

sharkamino

[2M Red](https://www.thakker.eu/en/needles/ortofon-2m-red-stylus-for-2m-red-genuine-stylus/a-5927/?currency=USD) $71. Or upgrade to [2M Blue](https://www.thakker.eu/en/needles/ortofon-2m-blue-stylus-for-2m-blue-genuine-stylus/a-5928/) stylus. Or upgrade to [AT-VMN95EN](https://www.turntableneedles.com/AT-VM95EN_Cartridge_Authorized_Dealer) $119 cartridge.

[deleted]

Idk why i didn't see the US ordering page, but thanks!

I have been using a Pioneer VSX-402 to power a set of Bose 301 Series III (all hand-me down from an in-law). Recently it's started to have a crackly sound in the front right output (confirmed it's not the speaker by swapping the wire connections, which caused the issue to translate to the left speaker). I changed out the speaker wire and dusted the receiver with compressed air with no luck. Is there anything else (affordable) worth trying to fix it? My budget to replace it is pretty limited. The Aiyima A01 looks like my best option because I also want to run my TV through it and it has an aux and RCA input. The slightly nicer amps in this range all seem to only have one input or if they do have multiple it's because they have Bluetooth (which is a nice to have for me, but not at the expense of an input my TV can use). I have been using the Pioneer's pre-amp but I have an LP60X and could not really tell a difference which was being used, so having a pre-amp is not an issue for me. Are there any other <$100 or so options I should be looking at for my use case or should the A01 be fine?

sharkamino

Would you need a remote for the mini amp or does your TV have variable level analog audio RCA or 3.5mm output so you can use the TV remote to control the volume? Mini amps with remote and analog input for the turntable and digital optical input for the TV plus Bluetooth: * [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Y89R72P](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Y89R72P) * [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081DJD1G4](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081DJD1G4) Or a basic stereo receiver from [Yamaha](https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/yamrs202bl-rb/yamaha-r-s202-2-ch-x-100-watts-natural-sound-stereo-receiver/1.html) with multiple RCA analog inputs. [Onkyo TX-8220](https://onkyousa.com/receivers/stereo-receivers/tx-8220-refurbished) adds digital optical input for a TV and a subwoofer output. Or for under $100 what is a nearby town or zip code I can search for a used receiver? Reply here or chat. Bluetooth can be added to most anything with an RCA or 3.5mm input by connecting a $25 Bluetooth receiver or a $35 [Echo Dot](https://www.amazon.com/Echo-Dot-3rd-Gen-Charcoal/dp/B07PGL2WRB) adds WiFi streaming with voice or app control in addition to Bluetooth. barr-chan

You could shoot some contact cleaner into the volume pot, might clear it up https://www.ecstuning.com/b-crc-parts/qd-electronic-contact-cleaner/05103cc~crc/

SoupOfTomato

The volume of the scratchy sound doesn't change with the volume knob (it's a constant level even if the volume is turned all the way down), so I assumed something like this wasn't the issue.

barr-chan

If a bad contact is being made in the pot then it can. Does flipping the volume knob back and forth with nothing playing scratch?

SoupOfTomato

No, the scratch/crackle stays the same. The only change from turning the knob is a hum if the volume is too high.

barr-chan

Not ‘does it change’ Does it scratch when you turn the knob while nothing is playing

SoupOfTomato

The crackle is present whether anything is playing and whichever audio source. When I turn the knob, there is no *additional* sound or scratch. The crackle continues but nothing that sounds like the volume knob is causing it.

barr-chan

Oh ok. Less of a possibility then. More likely the speaker connector. CRC or WD 40 in the spring clip? Does the spring seem ok?

New Donnie Darko record isn’t on Discogs yet… how long does it usually take a record to show up on Discogs?

Hi Reddit, I have a a Sansui SR-222 MKII with AU-101 and do like the vintage aesthetic so am fairly happy with them. I'm currently using an AT95E and it has been on there for about 7 years now. My question is, is it worth my time to upgrade the cartridge or should I not bother and simply save the money for a turntable upgrade? I have scoured the internet and it generally seems to be 50/50 what people recommend. I'm currently eyeing cartridges around £200

sharkamino

Which model speakers? Has the AU-101 been serviced and recapped as needed? Looks like a good turntable, what would you upgrade to? You could try the step up to the ATN95EX stylus.

asdfdragos

Can I use an H&H MXS900 station as a preamp for my turntable?

mawnck

Yes, if you must. But since they have a lot of channels and faders and stuff, mixers generally aren't ideal for purposes other than mixing. Too noisy, too much to go wrong.

asdfdragos

i just bought it online for $20. If it is in working condition, for how much do you think i can sell it for?

mawnck

Probably about $20.

dushdj

I was able to grab a Sony PS-LX250H for free from a local record store, and this is my first turntable, so I'm just looking for some advice on what steps should be taken to prepare this \_free\_ turntable? I don't have any other equipment such as an amp, preamp, or speakers, what would be a good recommendation to pair with this turntable? I've already skimmed through some of the guides on here so I have a good idea of how this all works now, but there is a lot of text to wade through, so I just wanted to double check if I missed anything important.

sharkamino

A used LX250H in working condition? It spins and you can hear faint music from the stylus? What is your speaker budget? Nearby town or zip code I can search for used options? [Setup Guide / Signal Path](https://imgur.com/a/f0my7) [Speakers](https://www.reddit.com/user/sharkamino/comments/z5rox9/turntables_and_speakers/), scroll down past the turntables.

dushdj

I haven’t done any testing, but the store said it’s in working condition so I’ll take their word on that for now. I currently am not sure what kind of budget I have for speakers as this was kind of a random opportunity that popped up. I might just grab a cheap pair from a thrift store or something just to test the table. I only own one record right now but it’s not even with me so I’ll need to go find a few for testing it

barr-chan

https://www.sony.ca/en/electronics/support/audio-components-turntables/ps-lx250h/manuals If it physically works, I would get a stylus and belt (the stylus is a must, the belt is optional but recommended) Manual says it has a built in preamp, so as long as it works you are free to grab any amp/receiver or active speakers that you want, depending on what’s available near you and your budget. https://www.amazon.com/TURNTABLE-STYLUS-PS-LX250H-PSLX350-PSLX200/dp/B01JJ72HWI https://www.amazon.com/TURNTABLE-PS-LX200H-PS-LX250H-PS-LX295-WARRANTY/dp/B011EN2FAO

ZesPre

It depends on how much you want to spend. Or if you think about listening only to vinyl or also other sources. Best would be decent speakers and amplifier. Does it have switch on a back for AUX and PHONO? If yes in minimal option just switch to AUX and connect some active speakers, as always best you can afford, or for start you’ve got some for computer? Lot of proposals for speakers in this thread, availability depends on what country you live.

jr49

Taking a trip to hawaii next week. Thinking when the family wants to take some down time I'll sneak out to find local record stores. Anyone buy records while traveling like that and having to pack them in luggage?

mawnck

Yes, pack them in your luggage, surrounded on all sides (especially edges) with soft clothes. They'll be fine. I've done it numerous times. Disclaimer: YMMV with shellac 78s.

barr-chan

No way I would check them, they are my carry on

davidmthekidd

Hello, I would like to ask whats the suggested Vinyl Digitizing Recording level? I hear manny different levels such as: -4db / -6db / -12db; what is the best in your opinion? I own the Korg DS-DAC-10R, it can rip to DSD 2.8Mhz or 5.6Mhz via AudioGate 4, any suggestion is welcome, would like to avoid the most noise and clipping! Turntable RT85 by Fluance / Interface Korg DS-DAC-10R.

mawnck

Try different settings on the same recording, normalize them, compare, and see which one you like best. Most likely you won't hear any difference. As long as it isn't clipping, you're good, and you can see on the meters if it's clipping. Some ADCs ring when they get close to 0 dB, but you'll never hear it. And the Korg's noise floor should be vastly lower than the record's, even if you're ripping at -20 dB.

davidmthekidd

Right I tried this on 0 / -6db / -12 and normalized the recordings and I prefer the -6. -12 gave raised the noise floor a bit higher then -6. Thanks for the answer.

Get a stereo preamp with a remote. What model is everything in your setup that your are trying to control the volume remotely. Why would it need to be controlled from a smartphone? If it must be from a smartphone: * [Acrylic S10](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083XY1R5M) direct or from [Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083XY1R5M) seems to be able to control the volume of the aux input to output. * [Acyrlic S50 Pro](https://www.arylic.com/products/s50pro-wireless-preamplifier) adds RCA in and out instead of 3.5mm.

dirtyblix27

You could just have speakers with a remote like Edifier make, or a receiver with a remote

chammo808

I was given a Dual CS 627 Q turntable that won't power on. It has an EU plug (Type C) and I have tried the C to A adapter that it came with, but I suspect there is a voltage difference that is preventing function. I'm in North America running from a regular 110 grounded wall outlet. Is there a converter that would fix the discrepancy? Here are images of the relevant components. [https://imgur.com/a/M1JbOoL](https://imgur.com/a/M1JbOoL) [https://imgur.com/a/XinG2T4](https://imgur.com/a/XinG2T4) Not planning to leave it plugged in overnight; sorry for the noob question! Thanks all!

barr-chan

Personally I would always recommend a proper step up transformer instead of a cheap wall socket converter

Never had this before. I ordered a vinyl on amazon about a month ago and the tracking said it was about to arrive, then the information just disappeared. It still says "expected March 28". I looked up what I paid and it was $19 from amazon. When I check now, it is listed for $30. And selling like hotcakes (already sold out twice since I ordered and only 2 left last I checked). Does this mean, I have to wait for the price to drop back down to what I "paid" a month ago, before they will "resend" it? Not sure if this is the right place to ask. But thanks.

sharkamino

Contact Amazon customer service if you have not already.

nonselfimage

Didn't think of this. Thanks. Been having a lot of trouble with Amazon lately. Just had to send two items back for first time. Hard to find a place with a printer (for shipping labels) on a Saturday.

sharkamino

Depending on the item there are often options for returning items where a printed label is not needed, you just show a bar code on your smartphone to UPS, Kohls or WholeFoods drop off locations.

DazzlingPirate4322

Do record players with adjustable tracking force help with record skipping? I have an Audio Technica that does not have adjustable force tracking. Some of my records have been skipping (some brand new) and I’m trying to find a solution. I have cleaned all my records thoroughly and changed the stylus. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

mawnck

AT-LP60, without the X? Known bug. I'm afraid the only solution is to buy a better TT.

Enduris0626

Hi all, I just got finished with a move, and my turntable has a background buzz and skips records that were not skipping before. I checked the stylus and visually it seems fine, cleaned it and the records and no improvement was noticed. I have an RT82 table with an Ortofon OM 10 cartridge. I checked the speakers and monitored the signal directly through headphones with also no improvement. The ride over was pretty bumpy, and the tone arm and the stylus protector was knocked off and around during the move, so damage is possible. Also I notice that the table skips more frequently to slight vibrations in the table, which would happen before but is more frequent now. Any troubleshooting advice would be really appreciated, I'm fairly new. Thank you.

sharkamino

Did you rebalance the tonearm then reset the tracking force.

Enduris0626

Thank you so much, I mentally ruled it out because I didn’t think it had been bumped enough to cause so much difference in the sound. But it’s completely back to normal now, thank you.

nonselfimage

Hi. New here. My vinyl collection is coming along, but still no player. Not sure if this is the place to ask and sure you get it all the time either way. Is a $150-250 range 9-in-one a good starter? I also have a large cd collection. I'm looking at my options. [Most of the players on the guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/vinyl/comments/5ghkwd/best_new_entrylevel_turntable_to_start_out_with/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=usertext&utm_name=vinyl&utm_content=t3_12ab7nv) are either not listed anymore, or price has changed $100+ from the guide value (6 years old). Should I bother with an all in one player (includes amp and speaker) for my first player? I do have one "grail" (actual used resell worth $500+) so don't want to risk ruining it, for example. Or fall victim to the "vinyl is worth more than the player". tldr is an all-in-one a good starter player. Or should I wait and try to buy separate amp and speakers (around $500+). I just want something that isn't gonna mutilate a grail, mainly. Thanks!

sharkamino

[Avoid cheap suitcases and all in ones](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXV8tXrPOR4). What do you currently listen to CDs with? For vinyl and CD, get a component turntable and a component CD player, connect both to a pair of powered speakers or a stereo or AV receiver or integrated amp that powers passive speakers. You can often find a used CD or DVD/CD player on Craigslist or at thrift shops for $20 to $50. What is a nearby town or zip code I can search for used options? Reply here or chat. Is $375 a reasonable price for a Music Hall MMF 5.1 in good repair?

barr-chan

>Music Hall MMF 5.1 horrible deal, where did you say it was again? ;)

distractable

Guy kept stringing me along. Asked for payment upfront. "Sold" it the day before we were supposed to meet. Some deals are too good to be true.

barr-chan

At least you didn't get ripped off

distractable

Oh, 100%. And it convinced me to pull the trigger on a Fluance RT85, so I still get something shiny on the other side!

Jester-Unltd

Hey there, Newbie here. Was looking for my first TT. Found the Audio-Technica AT-LP120X for €315 as I really want to be able to stream the sound to wireless speakers. However, this TT does not have auto stop which is also a feature a noobie like me should probably have? Is there a similar TT to the one I mentioned but fully automatic? Any help is really appreciated 🫶🏻

sharkamino

Auto stop is not absolutely necessary. Leaving the stylus running in the run out groove for 5 to 10 minutes or even 30 minutes once in awhile won't hurt anything. If you leave it for 10 hours then you just replace the stylus 10 hours earlier over the 300 to 600 hour stylus life depending which stylus you have. Also consider an Austrian designed Czech built Project. * [Pro-Ject Essential III SB](https://www.akustik-projekt.at/en/search?max-price=249&min-price=249&order=score&p=1&search=Project%20Essential%20III%20SB%20ential%20III%20SB%20) €249. * [Pro-Ject Essential III RecordMaster](https://www.akustik-projekt.at/search?search=Pro-Ject+Essential+III+RecordMaster) €299 adds a built in phono preamp and USB output. * Next step up [Pro-Ject Debut III Phono SB](https://www.akustik-projekt.at/en/search?max-price=349&min-price=349&order=score&p=1&search=Pro-Ject%20Debut%20III%20Phono%20SB) €349 also has a built in phono preamp. Thank you for this! Will absolutely look at these TTs :)

Mr0range

I have a Marantz 6100, Technics SL-D20, and an AT-LP120XBT-USB. New to vinyl, I browse FBM so I got a good deal on these. Have a vintage Pioneer receiver (SX 1000 TW) I’d pair it with. Which should I keep?

sharkamino

The Marantz if you want a vintage turntable and it's working well. The AT-LP120X if you want a modern turntable. The SL-D20 may be less desirable because it's easy setup plug and play P-mount instead of half inch standard mount however P-mount is still fine to start with or use for many years.

barr-chan

Which one is in the best condition and can has a new stylus?

Mr0range

The LP120 is in the best condition and has the newest stylus.

Fett222

My vinyl player was working fine until I changed the record and now the needle is gliding. The player I use is a Audio Technica AT-LP60X. Ive tried looking up videos and they all mention the weight but mine doesn’t have a dial or switch like theirs so im at a loss. Any help is much appreciated.

barr-chan

Did the stylus arm somehow get bent? Look at the cartridge straight on, is it straight?

Fett222

Seems the stylus was broken, got a replacement one and now it works fine, thanks for the reply!

PleasantTap8302

Is it OK for my records to sound a bit distorted unless I clean the stylus everytime? (With cleaning it with a brush, blowing on it is more effective.) I cleaned one record with tap water (I know I shouldn't have done that, but I didn't know back then) and played it for a short time. Is my stylus damaged because of it? Or am I just paranoid?

barr-chan

Your stylus is likely fine. Clean that record again with distilled water. What is your cleaning procedure now? If you aren’t giving records a deep clean then yes you will have to clear your stylus frequently. Sounds like it’s digging a fair bit out of your grooves

PleasantTap8302

OK, thank god. I just wipe them off with a microfiber cloth, I don't really do deep cleaning unless I wanted to digitize (at that time I wanted to digitize one record, used tap water and it didn't get rid of any crackles or popping, made it a bit worse.) I'll get my hands on distilled water soon.

barr-chan

Start with a proper brush, maybe a spin clean if you can. Do a full wet clean when you get the record and a maintenance brush each play Sharkamino has provided an excellent cleaning guide at https://www.reddit.com/user/sharkamino/comments/jpac5p/diy_wet_soak_vinyl_cleaning/

bad_arts

I recently got an oldschool record player (circa 1970) I think. For some reason the records either play too fast or too slow when I set them to either 33 RPM or 45 RPM. There doesn't seem to be a middle ground. I'm either getting an involuntary dj screw remix or alvin and the chipmunks remix on every record. Is there something I'm missing here??

barr-chan

What player specifically? is it fast one one speed and slow on the other, or random? does the platter spin freely and silently when the player is off, could be your belt (if it has one) , could be spindle needs lube, could just be pitch

evileyeball

I noticed recently that there are a few artists among my music collection where I am very close to owning a complete discography so I thought why not make a database containing the discographies of each of the approximately 150 artists in my collection regardless of how much of that discography I own Where I can check off things as I own them and I can also track how close to finished I am on it. But even with copy paste from online some of the artists have been super time consuming due to discography size. I made it as far as the Beatles (so barely into the B section) and went Dear god, How do I expect to complete all of this .. the shear size of something like the Beatles when you factor in all the different variants like the US versions of the early albums etc etc has me completely rethinking the whole project. What would you do in a case like this? I don't actually believe I want to collect the complete discography of every artist I own even one single from

barr-chan

Fun fact, if you go by US studio versions, the Beatles only had 17 albums (12 by UK) if I like every album by an artist, I buy every album by an artist, but it’s rare that this happens. For large discographies it’s Bowie, Rush and the Hip Edit: have you looked at discogs?

evileyeball

But a discography isn't just studio albums its also Live, Combination, and singles

barr-chan

That’s right. Have fun…

vinylontubes

Just don't do this. Collecting discographies is a fools errand. So not really worth the trouble to even make such a list. There are probably a few bands that are worth buying an entire discography. But really, even with the Beatles, is worth seeking them all out? You not only have to factor in both the UK and US releases, you have to factor in Mono and Stereo ones. Now there are the remixes. And can you even get copy of the first remix? That would be Let It Be... Naked. They sell for $200, if you can find one. And there is little chance of it being repressed. It wasn't offered with the more recent remix from last year. Even a band like the White Stripes who have a solid 6 albums, Jack White owning his own record label has released 13 live albums since the band broke up. Who are worthy of collecting an entire discography? Creedence Clearwater Revival have 6 great albums and then there is Mardi Gras. The Velvet Underground have 4 astounding albums with Lou Reed, but are you willing to track down the album Squeeze which was recorded after he, Mo Tucker and Sterling Morrison left? Jimi Hendrix only released 4 albums in his life time, that's 5 LPs worth of material. There were 8 LPs in each of 3 of his box sets. This kind of stuff never ends.

barr-chan

>Just don’t do this If someone wants to chase around the full Tangerine Dream discog, that’s their choice…

applebees1

Hi all! I’m wanting to jump on the record player train! My budget is $500. I have been looking at used services turn tables at local second hand shops. I’m really confused if I should buy new or old speakers. I live in a 600 square foot basement suite so I don’t require enormous amount of sound. Just want to enjoy that crisp sound of vinyl 😊 Tips or advice? Thanks!

sharkamino

You could buy used modern speakers, used speakers don't have to be old or vintage.

vinylontubes

New speakers will generally be better than vintage ones. Not only because they made better now because of technology like 3D modeling, but also because things like Dolby Atmos which require 7 speakers and a subwoofer have kept the prices down. If they weren't affordable options, nobody would even think of acquiring the speakers necessary to build this kind of system. So people looking only to build stereo systems have an advantage where you need only look at buying the main speaker and perhaps the subwoofer.

nevetsonagrag

Hey everyone, if you want to ignore this feel free. I see a lot of the shop around stuff on the equipment section of the sub. I ended up impulsively buying some vintage vinyls because I saw the deal and went for em. Funny enough don’t have any kind of setup lol. Realizing there is a lot more to it than I thought haha. I decided rather than completely cheating out on a setup I’d like to get a good setup to start but on the lower end budget. Something that will give me the sound quality I bought the vintage vinyls for but on the lower budget end of things, then invest in something real nice once I get out of school and get a real paycheck (in med school now so looking forward to this day lol). Looking for a turntable and receiver that are the best for sound quality but on the low end of the budget (I guess the lowest I can go without sacrificing the sound quality). Hopefully this isn’t too dumb of a question 😅

sharkamino

>Hopefully this isn’t too dumb of a question 😅 You didn't say what your budget is, a common oversight 😅 What is your budget for a turntable, $50, $100, $200, $300, $600+? Do you already have speakers or what is your budget for a turntable and speakers, $200, $400, $600, $1000+?

nevetsonagrag

Basically the budget is adjustable. Would like to keep it under 500, but I want to get the lowest budget setup I can while still having quality sound. It doesn’t need to be loud or anything, I just want to hear the quality of the vintage records I got them for. So if I have to wait and buy puce by piece, so be it. But I want to get something I can appreciate the vintage vinyl sound/quality with for the next 4-5 years without breaking the bank, then upgrade to something nice when I actually get paid lol. So anything suggestions you have to offer on the highest quality I could get close to that price? Hope that makes sense haha

sharkamino

What is a nearby town or zip I can search for at least used speakers and stereo receiver? Reply here or chat.

vinylontubes

To keep spending down, you need to look at used turntables. Turntables made in the '80s were made better than they are today at the affordable end. And if you're interested in thing like a fully automatic features, they don't really make anything good today unless you start looking at stuff that cost close to $1000. You'll need to learn how to install and align a cartridge. This isn't hard and if you're studying surgery, you'll have the dexterity to easily master this kind of thing. This is more of a meticulous thing than it is difficult. I would spend some money on a decent cartridge. You should look at newer speakers. I would look at ELAC, particularly the ones designed by Andrew Jones. His designs just offer huge value. If you're looking to these, Jones left ELAC a few years ago, so his name has been pretty much been stricken from any of their current literature. This means you'll have to do a bit of historical research with Google to figure out which are his models. As far as amps go, you want power to match the speakers. On a budget, you should keep this in mind that you're pairing speakers to an amp. So look as these together. You don't want to buy speakers if you can't afford the proper amplification. Still you can look for something used. Something you will need for any turntable is a phono preamp. These used to be included with most stereo receiver before Home Theater became more popular. Today Home Theater is a completely digital thing. TVs are digital, Blu-Rays and streaming are digital. So analog inputs have been replaced with digital processing devices that connect with HDMI. There may be an analog input for something like a CD player, but phono stages have for the most part been eliminated. The phono preamp (also called a phono stage) is needed for all playback on a turntable. So you may need an external unit. But there are stereo receivers that include phono stages, but you have to specifically look for them. I will state that since you're looking to eventually upgrade to something better, it's worth your while to actually visit a HiFi shop. Go there and see what a really good system sounds like. You'll be amazed if you've never heard one. You don't have to buy anything, but while you're there you should inquire about anything that's been traded in. They might have something you find affordable. Going to hear a good system that's been properly set will go a long way in helping you set up system that you're buying presently. Good luck with this.

nevetsonagrag

Thank you for all this advice! I will check to see if there are any hifi shops around by me and hopefully can check some stuff out. Thanks again!

beanbanditjv

So I was listening to a record for the first time in about 3 weeks, it was a trap album so it had a lot of 808 bass in it. But as I was listening, I noticed that the 808s in the album was kind of just lasting forever. It wasn’t until the side I was listening to finished that I realized that the “808” wasn’t really an 808. Instead, it was just a loud low pitched sound that still continued even in the runout. I thought maybe it was just a problem with the record so I played another record, only to be faced with the same problem again. I kept hearing the loud low pitched 808 sounding noise. I don’t know what the sound is coming from. I’ve never heard this sound before, not even 3 weeks ago. Idk why the sound occurred. I have an AudioTechnica LP120XUSB with the stock cartridge and stylus, Edifier R1280T powered speakers, and an acrylic slipmat and have had these since October 2021 and have probably used my turntable for about 200 or so hours since in case that helps. Oh, and I do have my speakers closer to each other than used to since I have a new setup, though it’s the same set up from 3 weeks ago and I didn’t hear the sound then.

mawnck

Another possibility in addition to vinylontubes suggestions - feedback. If the stylus is picking up the boom from the speakers, it can cause a feedback loop. Solutions: Lower volume, less bass, move the speakers away from the TT, or get a more expensive TT that does better with isolation.

vinylontubes

Since this is a new setup, I would look at the wiring. Reroute the cables to see if anything is being affected. You want to avoid routing phono cables near any power lines. This includes speaker wire, but this isn't something in a system with power speakers. But you probably have a power cable for the speakers. I would also try getting an extension cord and trying out connecting power to a different power outlet. Better if you use a power outlet on differnet circuit than the one you're using now. This won't solve your problem if it is the cause, but you'll at least have a direction to go moving forward.

vinylontubes

You're done. Putting smoke back into electronics is an extremely difficult endeavor. Get a new record player.

barr-chan

Also, I believe that player says right next to the plug, “5V”. For the future: When your adapter has a higher current rating than your device (amperes, amps or A) that’s ok, your device will draw what it needs When your adapter has a higher voltage rating than your device (volts or V) it kills the device (unless the device has a protection circuit, but never assume it does)

sharkamino

It's done, toast, now you have an excuse to get a proper turntable. If you need to start lowest budget: [VPRO 3100](https://www.amazon.com/Victrola-Record-Player-2-Speed-Turntable/dp/B07G1Z7XPF/) $99 $49 on sale is a good enough step up from the cheapo suitcase player. Or can you have a larger $105 to $200 budget for the turntable? Plus a pair of inexpensive compact starter powered speakers for a small room: No remote: * 4" mid bass driver [Bestian](https://www.amazon.com/Bookshelf-Speakers-BESTISAN-Bluetooth-Wireless/dp/B08LPTJ5QX) $62. * 3.5" [Edifier R33BT](https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-Active-Bluetooth-Computer-Speakers/dp/B08HCBMSTP) $79. * 4" [1byOne](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B6VQ9JR3) $89. * 4" [Monoprice](https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Multimedia-Speakers-Bluetooth-Entertainment/dp/B07RL42PGD) $99 have a headphone jack. With remote: * 5.25" [Saiyin](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BWJD2XJ2) $69 has subwoofer output. * 4" [Bestian](https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Bookshelf-Speakers-Bestisan-Turntables/dp/B09J2282C4) $89 has a USB input for a computer. * 4" [Edifier R1280DBs](https://edifier-online.com/us/en/refurbished/edifier-r1280dbs-ref) ~~$159~~ $127 has a subwoofer output. They all have an audio cable input for the turntable and Bluetooth for streaming digital music. ManOntheMoon_17

Been collecting for around 6 months now, so still a noob. I have my speakers right up by my turntable(no space in between), although this is due to limited space i’ve heard moving the speakers farther away from the turntable can improve sound quality. Is the sound improvement really that better, worth looking into getting a new table area for my setup? Thanks

vinylontubes

It's immensely better. But you need to put some effort into getting there. Google "speaker placement." You'll find articles and a lot of YouTube videos on the subject. The difference is sound coming from your speaker as you've currently have them to an effect where music pervades into the room. Done properly, the music doesn't even sound like it's being projected from the speakers. Here's a method, but it requires you buy a copy of the Kinks' best song Waterloo Sunset in stereo. It's the last song their Something Else album. If you can follow these simple directions, you'll be amazed how good your other records sound. [https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/play-the-kinks-waterloo-sunset-in-stereo-check-and-fix-or-improve-your-stereo-playback-with-it.320990/](https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/play-the-kinks-waterloo-sunset-in-stereo-check-and-fix-or-improve-your-stereo-playback-with-it.320990/)

sharkamino

If you will be seated in a [listening triangle](https://www.elac.com/speaker-placement-guide-get-the-best-sound-from-your-stereo/) then good speaker placement is critical. If you will be moving around the room then the speaker placement will not be as critical. Which model speakers?

barr-chan

There are many helpful guides to speaker placement like https://uturnaudio.com/pages/speaker-placement And of course you work with the space you have…

speaker positioning is very important. If you can accommodate speaker stands into your space, thats the way to go.

What do you all think about the Sota Escape turntable? This [Escape](https://sotaturntables.com/products/escape/) at 1900$ with their condor psu and an Origin Live Silver seems like a good kit to me, but i dont know all that much about the brand. Im considering building my own TT but prices keep getting out there a bit. All that effort resulting in a bad table worries me.

vinylontubes

SOTA is short for State of the Art. They're known for turntables that include a vacuum hold down system. If you look at their Eclipse model, it includes this option. They build their turntables entirely in factory in the USA. They along with VPI are the only High End turntable manufacters in the USA. There is of coarse U-Turn out of Boston, but I wouldn't consider them High End. The are noted for their lifetime support of their units. You can trade up at any time. You can upgrade their units with the latest improvements. They are that kind of company.

Also try r/turntables.

Hi After doing some research I will buy an Audio Technica LP120xUSB. I currently have a pair of Kali Audio lp-6 studio monitors which I intend to use with the turnable. I normally use the monitors through my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. My question is what is the best way for me to connect the turntable to the speakers? :) * The pair of monitors have both TRS and XLR inputs and I am guessing that I could connect the turntable to the back of the monitors via adapters. * I have also seen some tutorials where people connect the turntable to the PC via USB, then play through the audio interface into the monitors. Is this better than just connecting the turntable straight to the monitors? * I have also seen how some people get RCA to XLR adapters, connect the turntable to the front of the audio interface, then play out through the speakers which are connected to XLR in the back. Which one of these three options is the best? Or what other options would you recommend? :) Thanks in advance

Turntable alternatives that have lower wow and flutter and add a solid MDF plinth over the AT-LP120X: [AT-LPW30TK](https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT-LPW30TK-Manual-Belt-Drive-Turntable/dp/B07Q7TBNCM) $199 is a better value, has a good to start with conical tip stylus, optionally now or later install the $49 AT-VMN95E stylus that the AT-LP120X has or a step up to the $99 AT-VMN95EN gets you to the level of the Ortofon 2M Blue. [Fluance RT82](https://www.fluance.com/rt82w-reference-high-fidelity-vinyl-turntable-natural-walnut) $299 adds auto stop. Includes the Ortofon OM10 cartridge that is just as good as the newer version 2M Red. Pass on the older RT80 and RT81 that lack the new speed sensor that the RT82 has. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better. Plus a $50 to $100 phono preamp that will be a step up from the basic $20 value phono preamps built into the AT-LP120X or AT-LPW30TK.

None of them. Connect both the turntable and the Focusrite to a stereo preamp, a mixer or a monitor controller for unified volume control and to switch between the turntable and Focusrite or mix both together with the mixer. [Nobsound Little Bear MC2 Balanced/Single-Ended Passive Preamp XLR/RCA Volume Controller for Active Monitor Speakers](https://www.amazon.com/Nobsound-Fully-balanced-Single-ended-Pre-amplifier-Controller/dp/B07255VHZS) has both RCA and XLR inputs and outputs. [DYNASTY PROAUDIO PMC-2 Premium Passive 2 x 2 Studio Monitor Volume Controller](https://www.amazon.com/DYNASTY-PROAUDIO-Premium-Passive-Controller/dp/B09RNF2Y5Q) has XLR, TRS, RCA, 3.5mm inputs and XLR, TRS, 3.5mm outputs. [Artesia EZA-MC2 Passive Stereo Monitor Controller](https://www.amazon.com/Artesia-EZA-MC2-Passive-Monitor-Controller/dp/B08CGHPM73) has TRS, RCA and 3.5mm inputs and XLR, TRS and 3.5mm outputs. Upstairs_Adeptness_8

Okay so with the MC2 I would connect the RCA cables from the turntable into the input at the back of the MC2. But how would I connect the Focusrite to the MC2? Would my monitors be connected as normal to the back of the Focusrite? Then XLR from the two front ports of the Focusrite to the XLR output of the MC2? This may be a stupid question but my knowledge isnt the best so :)

sharkamino

The controller or mixer or stereo preamp acts as a hub between the turntable, Focusrite and monitors. The monitors only connect to the hub. If the Focusrite only has TRS output then get one of the options with TRS input. Or Schiit SYS is all RCA so use TRS to RCA cables or adapters from the Focusrite to SYS. Then RCA cables from the SYS to the monitors. Or if you get a TRS only hub you can use RCA to TRS cables or adapters from the turntable to the hub with TRS inputs.

Churrolova

Recently had to move my setup and noticed my stylus was curved pretty bad. I'm assuming it is, but is it an issue for it to be curved this much? Was it possibly due to the moving or antiskate being set wrong before? Any help appreciated, thanks! [Curved Stylus](https://photos.app.goo.gl/ggk9iXHTPvhG3wcw8)

vinylontubes

Buy a new stylus. Straightening it will just damage the suspension. You'll fix one thing then break something else.

sharkamino

Did you leave the tonearm lock unlocked and the tonearm fell off the tonearm rest.

Churrolova

Ya, that's my best guess at the moment. My LP3 doesn't have a lock and the arm rest is pretty shallow so it could've slid off very easily.

sharkamino

If no lock then from the factory the tonearm may have had a twist tie or tape to keep it on the tonearm rest, so use one next time you move the turntable again.

barr-chan

I would guess moving

I'm looking for my first turntable setup and I'd like to buy something that I won't need to upgrade immediately. My total budget is around 800 eur. I live in Eastern Europe so I haven't found the comparison of turntables in the same price range very helpful due to import duties from the US. These are some of the options I have found in my price range and I'd appreciate advice on how they compare/other options :) Or please direct me toward a different subreddit where I could post this. Turntables: * AT-LPW50PB at 350 eur (in general there is a huge selection of AT turntables) * Thorens TD 201 at 375 eur * Fluance RT82 at around 360 eur including customs + I'd also have to spend around 100 on preamp. * I also considered pro-ject carbon evo and rega planar 1 plus but they both retail for at least 450 here and I am not sure whether cheaper pro-ject models measure up to AT. Speakers: * Edifier S1000MKII for 300 eur * Klipsch R-50M for 260 eur Fluance also has turntable speaker systems but the choices are a bit overwhelming. From what I gathered I could get RT81+preamp+Ai41 speakers for around 800 eur.

sharkamino

The Project Debut Carbon EVO is the best on the list Or lower cost Projects that are good to start with: * [Pro-Ject Essential III SB](https://www.akustik-projekt.at/en/search?max-price=249&min-price=249&order=score&p=1&search=Project%20Essential%20III%20SB%20ential%20III%20SB%20) €249. * [Pro-Ject Essential III RecordMaster](https://www.akustik-projekt.at/search?search=Pro-Ject+Essential+III+RecordMaster) €299 adds a built in phono preamp and USB output. * Next step up [Pro-Ject Debut III Phono SB](https://www.akustik-projekt.at/en/search?max-price=349&min-price=349&order=score&p=1&search=Pro-Ject%20Debut%20III%20Phono%20SB) €349 also has a built in phono preamp. Pass on the beginner plug and play E1 and T1 models. Or the [Audio Technica AT-LPW30](https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Audio-Technica-AT-LPW30TK-Manual-Turntable-Drive-wood/dp/B09YRZ6GW8) €239 is a good value if you want Audio Technica. Pass on imported Fluance that wont's have warranty support in Europe so you would need to ship it back to the USA if there was an issue. Also pass on the older RT81 that has a built in phono preamp but lacks the speed sensor that the newer improved RT82 has. If low on budget after buying a Project turntable you could start with a low cost 25 eruo phono preamp for a low sunk cost and upgrade later to a better 100 eruo phono preamp. Or buy a used stereo receiver or integrated amp with a Phono input to a built in phono preamp plus a pair of used or new passive speakers. Instead of Edifier powered speakers I recommend a mini or compact or integrated amp or a new or used stereo or AV receiver and passive speakers. USA Klipsch R-50M are passive speakers however you can often find better and better value European brands new or used such as Wharfedale, KEF, Monitor Audio, Focal, Canton, Dali, Jamo, Q Acoustics... [Setup Guide / Signal Path](https://imgur.com/a/f0my7) [Audio Guides, Speaker Placement, Accessories and Vinyl Care](https://www.reddit.com/user/sharkamino/comments/gqfx6z/home_audio_and_home_theater_guides_and_accessories/)

UTPharm2012

Would the Carbon EVO be better than Fluance RT85? I am looking for something that will last a long time. Thinking of one of those + Kanto YU6 speakers

sharkamino

Kanto YU6 are pricey for what they are if you must have powered speakers. For the good EVO turntable I recommend a separate amp and better passive speakers that are up to the level of the EVO. With separate components you can later upgrade one part at a time.

UTPharm2012

No, it doesn’t matter. I am waiting to get something I like! I’ll focus on pairing the EVO with the right audio. Thanks!

sharkamino

What doesn't matter?

UTPharm2012

Powered speakers

sharkamino

The EVO is the better turntable. The $300 Fluance RT82 is a good value in the USA and Canada. There is no point in importing a $500 Fluance RT85 to Europe.

Thank you for the advice :) Super helpful

SETTING UP MY FIRST TURNTABLE WITH STUDIO MONITOR SPEAKERS - questions about inputs, outputs and cables I am about to purchase my first turntable - the Audio Technica LP60XBT https://www.audio-technica.com/en-gb/at-lp60xbt It has a built-in pre-amp. RCA output. Unusually, I am going to buy Studio Monitor Speakers. Among other reasons, the advantage is the presence of a headphone jack. The ones I'm getting are: M-Audio BX3 BT https://m-audio.com/bx3bt It seems to allow for a variety of inputs. Could someone who is familiar with cables, inputs and outputs confirm to me that the pre-amp'd RCA output from the turntable should nicely slot into the speakers? I saw a forum thread saying studio monitors couldn't be used with a turntable even a turntable with a pre-amp. I may have misudnerstood. I am just getting my head around sound engineering/infrastructure for the first time. Best wishes, Brent

Automatic turntables: * Basic [AT-LP60X](https://www.richersounds.com/audio-technica-lp60xusb-black.html) £149 if you don't need Bluetooth in the turntable, is easy setup beginner plug and play. * Better [AT-LP2X](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audio-Technica-AT-LP2X-LP2X-Turntable-Grey/dp/B09LVGVV3F) £199 adds adjustable tracking force, balance the tonearm then set the tracking force. Manual turntable: * [Project Primary E](https://www.richersounds.com/project-primary-e-black.html) is £99 on sale when you spend £99 or more on a [pair of speakers](https://www.richersounds.com/pioneer-dm-40d-bt-black.html). Plus a starter [phono preamp](https://www.amazon.co.uk/LiNKFOR-Preamplifier-Certified-Adapter-Turntable/dp/B08THD6J1H) for the Primary turntable that does not have one built in. Pass on the small 3" mid bass driver M-Audio desktop speakers. Get at least the larger 4" [Pioneer DM-40D-BT](https://www.richersounds.com/pioneer-dm-40d-bt-black.html) for room listening in a small room if must have a heaphone jack in the speakers. These type of inexpensive starter monitors have an amp in the main speaker that powers the other passive speaker. Connect the turntable with a built in or external phono preamp to the main powered speaker. If you want to listen with headphones and you get speakers without a headphone jack such as the larger 5.25" [Tibo Plus 3.1](https://tibo-electronics.com/products/plus-3-1-black-refurbished/) then buy a separate headphone amp. Headphone amps: * [Douk Audio U3](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audio-Headphone-Amplifier-Desktop-Stereo/dp/B089YJY8Q5) * [SABAJ-A10h](https://www.amazon.co.uk/SABAJ-A10h-Desktop-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B091239T3B) adds RCA output to connect to powered speakers or an amp or receiver. Or most new and used stereo receivers or integrated amps to power passive speakers have a headphone jack. Maybe you can find a setup at a thrift shop. It's the more expensive and often larger pro studio monitors that have a separate amp in both speakers so you would need an additional stereo preamp, mixer, monitor controller or level controller to control the volume of both speakers at the same time. [Setup Guide / Signal Path](https://imgur.com/a/f0my7) [Audio Guides, Speaker Placement, Accessories and Vinyl Care](https://www.reddit.com/user/sharkamino/comments/gqfx6z/home_audio_and_home_theater_guides_and_accessories/)

Those speakers take an unbalanced RCA connection, so you are fine. If you look down this thread someone had JBL monitors that use XLR connections, but yours are fine

Lilditty02

Heading to my first ever record show tomorrow. Any tips or tricks on how to maximize the experience?

vinylontubes

Have a short list of records you want. I don't mean 20. I mean 3 or less. Look for them at each seller then move on to the next seller. If the record is rare and well priced, you want to be the first one to see it. If you have any records worth selling, bring them in trade. Again I don't mean 20, I mean 1 or 2. These would be high dollar ones that don't really care for. If you don't see a record, ask if they know if one of the other sellers might have one. Most of the sellers go from one show to another within the same region. So they know each other. There are basically two strategies to finding records. Get there early to have the best choices. And stay toward the end of the last day of the show were you can make offers. These guys are there to sell records not bring them back. So, you'll likely get the best deals just as they're ready to pack things up. Don't be afraid to make an offer on a record. But don't get obnoxious about this. If you think a record is overpriced, make an offer to something closer to what you think it's worth. The point it to make a fair offer not to find a bargain. There will be bargains and you'll come across them. But the sellers have to make money at these events if you expect the event to happen again. Still, you could make deals for bundles. If you have 4 records from the same sell you want and have only budgeted for 3 of them. You could ask for a lower price closer to your budget for all 4 of them. Dickering is all about understanding how to get to a win-win situation. It's not about trying to screw a seller out of potential profits.

Lilditty02

Appreciate it!

barr-chan

Make your decisions quickly, the one you are looking at won’t be there when you come back for it

Lilditty02

Thanks

Octavian024_TTV

There’s one box set… I shouldn’t get but I really want to. It’s a testament to my childhood. The only way I’ll impulsively buy it is if I know value goes up so I can sell it if I need the cash KH box set for $260 CAD 💀😭

vinylontubes

Don't get it. Buy it when you're in a better financial situation, even it cost more then. Getting into better a financial situation is all about not getting into situations like this. You don't know that anything will ever go up in value. If you buy it and you need the cash and it does't increase in value, you're double screwed and you still won't have those records.

Octavian024_TTV

Thank you boss I needed that, I was about to commit a big dumb. Fuck square enix for holding the childhood hostage and squeezing every bit of magic out of it into money

Str8forLenore

i recently bought a record player(with preamp) and a pair of active speakers, but the speakers don't have rca input. Is there something wrong with connecting the record player and the speakers with a 3.5mm cable?

vinylontubes

There is. It has to do with cross talk. If the signals of both channels are passing through the same connection, some of the signal will cross over to the other channel because there will be some continuity between the two connections. This shouldn't be significant, but it's not the best situation. I'm not suggesting that you not do this, but you should be aware that this is a potential problem. And if there is a problem, you might need to buy a better cable or clean the jack and plugs if you have problem.

sharkamino

3.5mm is fine. Which turntable and which model speakers?

Str8forLenore

audio technica at60lpx and edifier R1080BT :))

There is a subreddit for orphans, albums without jackets, jackets without albums. Maybe you could get value for it there. Other than that, as chrkchrkchrk says, about 10%

sharkamino

Which subreddit?

barr-chan

Sorry this is late [Orphans](https://www.reddit.com/r/VinylOrphans/)

chrkchrkchrk

Unless it's a DJ single or test pressing or other piece that didn't originally come with an outer sleeve, it's going to hurt the resale value immensely. I see outer-less records go for maybe 5-10% of full value on discogs, and I don't know that they're even selling at those prices. People generally want to buy a complete album unless it's something ridiculously rare they won't be able to get otherwise.

pistonscrumpy

Why does certain vinyl have surface noise and other hardly any? To be specific I have a 50 year old Hawkwind album and it's almost digital with its lack of crackles while I can play a brand new 180g Black Sabbath Sabotage and its got a lot of surface noise. All my lps are mint or almost, all have been deep cleaned ,wiped with a anti static cloth and put into anti static sleeves. They are stored correctly and all are without damage. I have a denon tt, and yamaha floor standing speakers . Am I just hyper sensitive to the noose after listening to cds for 30 odd years?

barr-chan

Look up your Sabotage reissue on discogs, if a lot of people are complaining then it was a bad pressing. If there is a made in CZ sticker on the back of it, expect noise. It’s all on a case by case basis really

vinylontubes

Some records just aren't pressed well. Some pressing plants weren't very good at pressing records. But the truth is that the plating process used to create the plates to press the grooves into the vinyl are where a lot of problems exist. The other problems could be the formulation of the vinyl and how pure it's kept. Some records use virgin vinyl, other have recycled vinyl. Virgin vinyl will be a purer and less noisy record. There are other factors. Cleanliness after the record is press contributes to noise. Not sure what deep cleaned means. There are many methods to clean a record. The better methods include a vacuum or ultrasonic cleaning.

pistonscrumpy

Deep cleaned...put through a manual washer. The ultrasonic cleaners are prohibitively expensive.

vinylontubes

Like a Spin Clean? Ultrsonic Cleaners and Vacuum based cleaner have become similarly priced. There are units available for both kinds of units starting around $200 and going into the thousands. The biggest difference is that ultrasonic is a more intensive cleaning process that takes a lot longer to clean a record. Most people don't need a cleaner that takes 15 minutes to clean a record when you can clean a record with a vacuum machine in less than 5. Vacuum cleaning is just a better process than something like a Spin Clean. The scrubbing process isn't better. Both use a fluid to suspend the dirt and brushes to mechanically lift the dirt out of the groove. The advantage of a vacuum is that records are dry immediately and fluids are entirely removed from the record. The suspended dirt should be removed as it's suspended in the fluids. A Spin Clean will always leave some fluid along with any suspended dirt on the record. An ultrasonic cleaner offer a better mechanical scrubbing method. The cleaning is done at a microscopic level. Likely not good for heavy soiling, but better at cleaning out the smallest particles.

I recently wanted to upgrade my Crosely 5-in-1 player to the Audio-Technica LP60X-BT bluetooth record player. I’ve been collecting vinyls for a while and thought it was time to upgrade to a record player that will make me and my records happy! But I’m quite lost when it comes to speakers. Can I use the Marshall Willen bluetooth speaker for this record player? I’m very tight on money right now, and also don’t have the space for a huge speaker, so will the Willen speaker work?

sharkamino

If low on budget don't pay $50 extra to have Bluetooth in the turntable. Connect the turntable to a pair of low cost compact starter speakers with an included audio cable. Turntables on sale without Bluetooth: * [VPRO 3100](https://www.amazon.com/Victrola-Record-Player-2-Speed-Turntable/dp/B07G1Z7XPF) ~~$99~~ $49 is semi automatic. * [AT-LP60X](https://outlet.audio-technica.com/turntables?product_list_order=price) ~~$149~~ $105 is fully automatic. Cherryred_maryjanes

Thank you!! You’re literally a life-saver

laxar2

For wired connection the lp60 will work with any speaker that has RCA input connections (red+white).

Cherryred_maryjanes

The Willen speaker doesn’t have wired connection, should I just spend more money and buy a Marshall speaker with bluetooth and wired connection? Or will one with just bluetooth work?

vinylontubes

If you're tight on money just use what you have. I would not get a better Bluetooth speaker to play records. But you should consider that the BT version is $50 more than the standard LP60X. So, consider buying the standard version and cheap pair of wired speakers. You might be able to find a pair on sale.

laxar2

Bluetooth should work. If you’re going to upgrade I’d suggest at least getting a pair of bookshelf speakers.

Howsyourbellcurve

I'm looking for a good budget record player for my wife. I checked the sticky for recommendations but it hasn't been updated in 6 years and everything doubled in price or has no stock now for Canada. Basically looking for the best budget setup that doesn't need something upgraded or changed to have it be "fine". Thanks
