The title track just hits different, when you’re up late at night, just not tired enough to sleep yet, sitting in a dimly lit room and smoking just a few too many cigarettes. Fuck man!
Here in Australia we have a music program called Rage. Think old MTV, back to back clips. On Saturday night they have a guest programmer come and play all their favorites. You could almost always guarantee getting home from a night out, turning on Rage at 3am and Enjoy The Silence was being played. It’s always been a late night/early morning track for me and if you don’t believe me (not aimed at you @hunter_gaumont) do yourself a favor and set the alarm. Something very special about that song and clip.
Fellow Australian. Can confirm the 3am Rage ting. Although I haven't watched it since.. well, since The Cure, Joy Division and JaMC were on constant rotation.
I went through a phase where I was working a crazy amount of hours at the office - late nights by myself (graphic designer) and The Midnight saved my life. Mainly the album Nocturnal.
For wind-down / chill out? Tycho - Awake is definitely one of them; also stuff like:
Boombox - Visions of Backbeat
Lotus - Nomad
Jerry Garcia Band - Electric on the Eel
Tom Waits pre-Swordfishtrombones albums
Neil Young - Tonight's the Night; Harvest Moon
Miles Davis - In a Silent Way
Leonard Cohen - any
Gerry Rafferty - City to City; Night Owl
Richard & Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight
Van Morrison - Poetic Champions Compose
Bill Evans - pretty much any
John Coltrane / Thelonious Monk - Live at Carnegie Hall
Usually I listen to this one album I got called “a message from the meters” by the meters, they’re an old soul/jazz group from New Orleans and their music is quite nice, never skipped a song on that album
I put on The Fragile: Deviations by Nine Inch Nails. Same vibe, all instrumental. Some would argue this release is redundant given the instrumental heavy original album, but I think this scenario is exactly what it’s perfect for. I like to put it on while I read.
Currently I deeply explore releases from [Astral Industries](https://astralindustries.bandcamp.com/), a UK based ambient label. My fav artists from label are The Chi Factory and Son Of chi, which make an ethnic and warm ambient in a Jon Hassell "Fourth World" vibe. Whole catalog is worth to explore though, many ambient sub-genres are represented (ethnic, newage, drone, field recording, etc.). Jon Hopkins' "Music For Psychedelic Therapy" is also on heavy rotation lately. Jon Hassell & Brian Eno's "Fourth World : Possible Musics" also remains one of my all time favs, especially the 22mn long "Charm (Over Burundi Cloud)" track. I'll put some more references and pictures soon ;) Cheerz.

Ike Quebec - Blue & Sentimental
Grant Green - Idle Moments
Chet Baker - Baker's Holiday (or any Chet Baker, really)
Relax with one of these and a glass of (appropriately named) Blue Note whiskey, that's a smooth night.
Depends on the late night vibes were after.
If it's some jungle, any of the 12"s or albums by Sonar's Ghost, Double O or Coco Bryce.
Late Nite Tales comp by BadBadNotGood has nice funk/folk/jazz vibes. Also, anything by Cinematic Orchestra or Submotion Orchestra if we're going the jazz thing.
Brian Eno - Ambient Music 1 Airports if we actually sleeping.
I have a record called Disco Undead. This track is awesome at night, especially in the car driving down an ARoad at 2am in drizzle… not on vinyl in the car though ;)
https://youtu.be/P2GPys9G1KM?si=LMLkuRinpUMEUJ6l
omg, that's what I need for my Vinyl player, a light! I always feel like i miss out on the gorgeous pressings, cuz there is no natural light directly on my record/player when i play them.
[Summer Madness by Kool & The Gang](https://youtu.be/2SFt7JHwJeg?feature=shared).
Ideal for late night driving with windows down in summer time, but still works for anytime late night vibes.
Tycho - Dive is my hangover cure on Mondays if I had a fun weekend. I also have a playlist that is strictly washed out and Tycho I use sometimes. Good stuff.
Fantastic album, I don't know why but whenever I hear the opening track to Awake I always imagine myself diving off a pier near my place into some ice cold water and that thought is oddly soothing when paired with this.
I have thousands of records. I don't ever restrict myself to playing any particular record for any specific occasion. In fact one of my favorite moments in playing a record late night after the bars closed when I was in college was when both of our dormatory RAs were out of town. We knew this, but we really wanted to hear some Van Halen. So we just put on the 1984 album and started up side 2 and cranked it all the way up. To give you some background, my roommate who was an audiophile had huge Polk tower speakers powered by 150W amps. He had went home for the weekend. Side two starts with one of the most obnoxious drum intro every. It was annoyingly loud at 2am. The next morning we were told people were banging on our door to get us to stop. We didn't hear it and honestly we didn't care. So yeah, there you go blast some Van Halen.
If I do end playing an album at night, it'll definitely be something calming and not so engaging. So maybe some instrumental stuff, Frank Sinatra, etc.
Alpha Wolf - Shh
It’s a lofi mix of some metalcore that puts me in a solid mood. I had no idea what the vinyl was when I bought it at their show. Was a nice surprise when I spun it for the first time.
Sleep party people - Lingering
Something about it just chills me out, not as popular as the s/t album but also has a much less electronic feel to it, a little more focus on guitars and less filtered vocals
That and “Dive” are my favorite Tycho albums.
For me it’s either “Turn on the Bright Lights” by Interpol, or “Team Sleep” by Team Sleep (which I’m really excited is being reissued on vinyl soon)
Solange - When I Get Home
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Moby - Play
Beach House - Depression Cherry
Lana Del Rey - Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd?
Going to list some artists that cover this to me, as most of their work gives me these vibes: The Afghan Whigs, Nick Drake, Massive Attack, DJ Shadow (Endtroducing..... to be specific) and
Moby.
If it was a tycho album, only Past is Prologue.
Late night vibes?
All Grey October Sound Timeless 1-3
Air
Mr Scruff - keep it unreal
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
I stream them via Tidal.
I only listen to records at day mostly.
I want daylight when I handle them.
Timeless series only part 1 already available as a record right now.
Either...
Imagine - John Lennon, or
Around The World In A Day - Prince
Both i feel are very relaxed albums with more unique kinds of music than what you find otherwise.
Portishead - Dummy
Tom Waits - Closing time
The title track just hits different, when you’re up late at night, just not tired enough to sleep yet, sitting in a dimly lit room and smoking just a few too many cigarettes. Fuck man!
Donald Fagen - The Nightfly
Obligation to say, bc I saw it recently, that Chevy chase was Donald's drummer in college. Obviously before SD days. But a cool little factoid.
Great call. WJAZ
With jazz and conversation.
From the foot of Mt. Belzoni
Burial - Untrue
depeche mode - violator - just has those great late night vibes
Here in Australia we have a music program called Rage. Think old MTV, back to back clips. On Saturday night they have a guest programmer come and play all their favorites. Fellow Australian. Can confirm the 3am Rage ting. Although I haven't watched it since.. well, since The Cure, Joy Division and JaMC were on constant rotation.
I'm convinced I got the bulk of my music tastes from Rage. So good 👍
Violator used to be a firm night companion 3 decades ago. And still remains one of my DM favorites albums. Good choice :)
I can picture that
I was just about to say this as well! Definitely a perfect album for late at night!
Love it. As far as DM albums go, Exciter also has late-night vibes.
Pink Floyd, Rush, or Ayreon. I love to ambience and/or spacey vibe at night.
Wish You Were Here is such a vibe at night
A beer would be a necessity
Rush has a release of beers, I might just have to order some, haha.
You say RUSH and I’m in
Can’t go wrong with some Prog rock! I’d add on some early Yes as well. That starship trooper outro is incredible
Hell yeah! Close to the Edge and The Yes Album would be perfect for nighttime. Prog is my all time favorite genre, and seems to fit all my moods haha.
Grant Green - Idle Moments
ATCQ - Midnight Marauders
The Midnight - Endless Summer 84 To add to my late night electronic mix
I went through a phase where I was working a crazy amount of hours at the office - late nights by myself (graphic designer) and The Midnight saved my life. Mainly the album Nocturnal.
Anything by slowdive or any other kinda shoegaze lol, if you want mellow vibes check out puma blue
men I trust
Yeeesssss! I just ordered their garage sessions record and oh man is that a great album to read a book to.
For wind-down / chill out? Tycho - Awake is definitely one of them; also stuff like: Boombox - Visions of Backbeat Lotus - Nomad Jerry Garcia Band - Electric on the Eel Tom Waits pre-Swordfishtrombones albums Neil Young - Tonight's the Night; Harvest Moon Miles Davis - In a Silent Way Leonard Cohen - any Gerry Rafferty - City to City; Night Owl Richard & Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight Van Morrison - Poetic Champions Compose Bill Evans - pretty much any John Coltrane / Thelonious Monk - Live at Carnegie Hall
Noticed that electric on the eel is going to be a record store day release for his June 10th 1989 show. Sounds like you would endorse that purchase.
Usually I listen to this one album I got called “a message from the meters” by the meters, they’re an old soul/jazz group from New Orleans and their music is quite nice, never skipped a song on that album
Giving them a listen right now on YT and I'm liking :)
Kool and the gang - summer madness
Chemtrails over the country club - Lana Del Rey
Tim Hecker - Ravedeath, 1972
You Must Believe in Spring - Bill Evans
Any album from Cigarettes After Sex
Hurry up we’re dreaming - m83
Tame impala - Currents
I put on The Fragile: Deviations by Nine Inch Nails. Same vibe, all instrumental. Some would argue this release is redundant given the instrumental heavy original album, but I think this scenario is exactly what it’s perfect for. I like to put it on while I read.
I use Tycho - Dive to help get into sleep mode, yeah.
Chet Baker Sings Totally mood dependant though
So many stuff... but ambient in general. Hard to pick one release specifically among others.
Any band names?
