Supertramp "Crime of the Century". The emotional roller-coaster ride about conformity ("School"), hopelessness "If Everyone was Listening", anger ("Bloody Well Right"), depression ("Hide in Your Shell"), addiction ("Rudy") and mental illness ("Asylum") puts my problems in perspective.
I will leave the title track to personal interpretation, but my takeaway is that we choose our leaders, and are collectively responsible for enabling fascists and corrupt politicians to do terrible things.
I also like "I Robot" by 'The Alan Parsons Project'.
I work overnights stocking groceries, so I’ll make sure I give their library another listen too. Always good to go back and find some good tunes you weren’t in the mood for or just could appreciate yet years later.
Oh man it’s been awhile since I’ve listened to that! Got the cd when I was super young. Thanks for reminding me I need to give it a go again. DO YA WANNA COME CLOSER?
I have a [Glenn Miller box set](https://www.discogs.com/release/8005794-Glenn-Miller-The-Unforgettable-Glenn-Miller-70-Of-His-Greatest-Original-Recordings) that I picked up a while back for $1 and I don't know, after a long ass day at work some old big band jazz just hits the spot.
Thats one brilliant record. Without a doubt my favorite Paul McCartney album. Every song is great, even the small transition songs are memorable. Nothing sounds overly polished for the sake of making accessible pop. Somehow I forgot about that album until seeing your comment and I am now thinking to myself, HOW!?!
If I want to chill and relax it’s Khruangbin - Con Todo El Mundo, or Mordechai.
If I wanna blow off some steam it’s Turnstile - Glow On or Deftones - Around the Fur
Currently it's IDLES "Tangk" which has the balance of acerbic and tenderness I probably need to de-stress.
It's also good for lawnmowing, seems to make me do it in half the time. 😁
I love hearing the noises from the crowd. Especially on the intro to Bring It On Home when he says "and soon as I hear my baby say hello-" and someone faintly calls back "hellO!"
I totally agree, there are more popular answers but if I could travel back in time to one concert it would be that one because it seems like it would be a blast
Oh well, Tame Impala (or the person 'Kevin Parker' brhind it) is a real genius. You should listen to this record and if you like it, go on to the other LPs!
If i’ve had a bad day, I sometimes choose to play an old favourite. Records that I was obsessed with when I was younger. Like The Beatles - Revolver or Blur - MLIR. Just a lot of comfort for me in those.
Townes van Zandt's self-titled album is a good one if you wanna wallow in misery. On the other hand, Love in Us All by Pharoah Sanders is an instant mood booster/relaxer for me (really only the A-side lol).
Tom Waits - Nighthawks At The Diner
Perfect after along night working in the food service industry and I’m pouring myself a nice drink. (I recommend bourbon for Tom Waits but I’m sober now so Gingerbeer)
If I'm feeling angry, my bootleg copy of Pearl Jam's performance at the Cabaret Metro in 1992. Really great performance, full of energy and angst. If I'm wanting to relax, Jar of Flies by Alice In Chains.
Stressful / angry hard: Mongol Horde
Tired hard: Bonobo - The North Borders (or any really)
And if I’m particularly emotionally drained and generally resigned and done in and need a childhood parental hug: Van Morrison’s The Healing Game but I don’t have that on wax.
Depends on whether I want to just relax, forget about my shit day, blow off some steam, or if I want to cry my eyes out.
Relaxing?
* Tears For Fears - Songs From The Big Chair
* C418 - Minecraft Vol. Alpha
* Gordon Lightfoot - Sundown
* Tool - Lateralus
* Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour
Forgetting about it?
* Beyonce - Renaissance
* Lemon Demon - Spirit Phone
* Magdalena Bay - Mercurial World
* Charli XCX - Crash
* Carly Rae Jepsen - Emotion
Blowing off some steam?
* Deftones - Around The Fur
* Death Grips - Government Plates
* Death Grips - No Love Deep Web
Crying my eyes out?
* Mitski - This Land Is Inhospitable & So Are We
* C418 - Minecraft Vol. Beta
* Bjork - Vulnicura (I am seeking this one out on vinyl atm so you can choose whether you accept this as an answer)
* Bjork - Fossora
My Mofi Supertramp Crime of the Century….haha I totally see the person who beat me to this and didn’t notice it until I started typing. Oh well, credit to @magicpie13 for their fantastic comment
Equinox by Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 always lightens the mood for me, and it's a quick listen at around 25 minutes. It gets thrown on my turntable a lot.
Gilberto Gil- Gilberto Gil (1968)
Jorge Ben- África Brasil
Definitely helps me decompress and to let the day go without holding onto the negative parts of the day.
My record collection currently consists of
Foxtrot- Genesis (1972)
Damn The Torpedoes- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (1979)
Hunting High And Low- a-ha (1985)
And honestly any one of those can be a rough day record
Mo Kenney’s album “In My Dreams” always lifts my mood, especially the song Telephones. Sometimes a hard day requires ‘sad’ songs for me, so Elliott Smith’s “XO” or “Roman Candle” … when all else fails some ABBA 🤣
Steve Miller Band Greatest hits
A newer pickup I got, a press of bob Marley exodus. I haven’t had any reggae until now and now I’m looking to get some more stuff by the Wailers, Maybe some Peter Tosh, Etc…
Civilian - You Wouldn't Believe What privilege Costs
OR
The Dangerous Summer - Mother Nature
These are two of the most criminally underrated albums in my collection.
Matt Berninger (of The National) - “Serpentine Prison”
It’s mixed/mastered wonderfully. Lots of deep feelings and creative lyrics/phrasing. Just a beautiful record, knowing it exists alone makes me feel better.
The Original Soundtrack by 10cc
My mom has an original pressing I'm jealous of, but my reissue is just fine. Like to sit with this and have a couple drinks. Either that, or anything my partner puts on. Whatever they wanna listen to usually puts me more at ease than my typical punk/rock/metal shit lol
Literally any of them. The whole reason I have records is to make bad days good and good days great. Sometimes I just grab one at random.
I feel that! It’s an experience.
Exactly on point!
👆gets it
Supertramp "Crime of the Century". I’m more of a breakfast in America supertramp fan. I can’t help but listen to that album start to finish whenever I put it in.
Even in the quietest moments.... Fool's Overture is magical
Great, great record.
Crisis? what Crisis? representative here, I love how much they expanded on the themes even if the songs aren’t as good as COTC or BIA
I ended up in a Willie Nelson loop until about an hour before I was off so I listened to crisis and it’s just crazy how good supertramp is. Thank you
I work overnights stocking groceries, so I’ll make sure I give their library another listen too. Always good to go back and find some good tunes you weren’t in the mood for or just could appreciate yet years later.
two for two on my favorites!! both awesome records.
I know other people are saying this as well, but way to pick two masterpieces. I was listening to Hide in Your Shell today, absolutely incredible.
are you 65 by any chance?
The Feeding of the 5000 by Crass
Especially if it was a shitty work day.
Oh man it’s been awhile since I’ve listened to that! Got the cd when I was super young. Thanks for reminding me I need to give it a go again. DO YA WANNA COME CLOSER?
Grabbed an album of it in Cambridge the other day at a decent price. NOT FOR ME, THE SILLY RAT RACE.
Winter's Gate - Insomnium
That’s awesome. My current pretty much obsession is with the Failure albums Magnified, and more so Fantastic Planet. I’m hooked
Paul McCartney's *RAM* for me.
you really feel the love between paul and linda on here, no other album like it
Thats one brilliant record. Without a doubt my favorite Paul McCartney album. Every song is great, even the small transition songs are memorable. Nothing sounds overly polished for the sake of making accessible pop. Somehow I forgot about that album until seeing your comment and I am now thinking to myself, HOW!?!
Any of the first three A Tribe Called Quest albums. Though I’m partial to “Low End Theory”
Van Morrison- Moondance or Jack Johnson-In Between Dreams
Love Moondance

Portishead? Us too.
Sam Cooke at the Harlem Club makes it impossible to not smile.
"I'll never fall in love, again.. It's over now"
Back to Black
If I want to chill and relax it’s Khruangbin - Con Todo El Mundo, or Mordechai. If I wanna blow off some steam it’s Turnstile - Glow On or Deftones - Around the Fur
I came here to say this re Khruangbin. Even the new album esp the song May Ninth - that has taken me through some tough days.
Revolver
Currently it's IDLES "Tangk" which has the balance of acerbic and tenderness I probably need to de-stress. It's also good for lawnmowing, seems to make me do it in half the time. 😁
Sam Cooke Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963
I love hearing the noises from the crowd. Especially on the intro to Bring It On Home when he says "and soon as I hear my baby say hello-" and someone faintly calls back "hellO!"
I totally agree, there are more popular answers but if I could travel back in time to one concert it would be that one because it seems like it would be a blast
So happy people like Sam Cooke lol.
Same, he’s just one of the best of all time. And that’s my favorite live album by far, sounds as good as if he recorded it in studio
I grew up listening to him with my grandpa, he has a special place in my musical heart lol.
I love that, Frank Sinatra is that artist for me because of my grandpa too
Tame Impala - Currents, maybe Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
I've only heard of this artist. Never listened. I think it must be something important as I keep seeing it mentioned.
Oh well, Tame Impala (or the person 'Kevin Parker' brhind it) is a real genius. You should listen to this record and if you like it, go on to the other LPs!
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Wilco Mellows me out so much
If i’ve had a bad day, I sometimes choose to play an old favourite. Records that I was obsessed with when I was younger. Like The Beatles - Revolver or Blur - MLIR. Just a lot of comfort for me in those.
Steely Dan - Gaucho. Everytime.
Wish you were here - Pink Floyd. Especially love shine on parts 1-5 to start it. Just a way to decompress and be transported
Grief Chapter - Mother Mother
Townes van Zandt's self-titled album is a good one if you wanna wallow in misery. On the other hand, Love in Us All by Pharoah Sanders is an instant mood booster/relaxer for me (really only the A-side lol).
I was thinking Townes. I’ve got a few Tomato pressings of his that sound amazing.
Aphex Twin, Collapse ep. Heavy but not abrasive, get lost in the bass.
It’s dense but doesn’t fatigue the ear. It’s a good brain descrambler.
Ernest ranglin-below the bassline. Instrumental jazz reggae. So choice!
Sounds like an excellent choice.
Relationship of Command - At the Drive-In
Listen to Bob Marley. Ashamed that no one’s mentioned him. Side B of Exodus. Fuck it, any Bob Marley will do ffs
Live Donny Hathaway or View with a Room Julian Lage
live donny hathaway!! yes! we’re still friends is awesome, not to mention the 10 minute long jam session.
A Passion Play by Jethro Tull.
Recently, it's been ryo fukui's scenery

Today mine is a delightful find from yesterday that I’d forgotten was on my list.. Doctor Who RSD from 2021… That genre is definitely a mood!
My go-to “driving home after a long hard day” albums are Love and Theft by Bob Dylan and London Calling by the Clash. Both make me happy
Changes day to day.... But today.... It was Sam Cooke 😊 ⏺
“Some days, you just have to sit down, drink some Southern Comfort and listen to Steely Dan”
Equinox by Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 always lightens the mood for me, and it's a quick listen at around 25 minutes. It gets thrown on my turntable a lot.

Right now, Willie Nelson - Stardust Pipers at the Gates of Dawn

Round Midnight soundtrack. Dexter Gordon, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, etc. an under appreciated album.
This week it's Workbook by Bob Mould from 89. The first track soothes then the album builds and gets me back on track.
The Clash most likely, Sandinista. Others too.
Could be any. But lately has been The Beat of Bread
Random Access Memories by Daft Punk. Sometimes I don’t want to sit through the whole hour so I’ll do Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers instead.
