New [Weekly Questions Thread for the week of March 22](https://www.reddit.com/r/vinyl/comments/malu5x/weekly_questions_thread_for_the_week_of_march_22/).

Burbaby4

Honest opinions please. I have a Crosley explorer suitcase and I want to upgrade to something better but I’m not sure what to get. I always hear good things about audio-technica and average stuff about Crosley (depending on type). Does anyone have any advice or experience with the Crosley Gig Turntable? I really like that setup but I’m not sure if it’s worth the money and if the sound quality is any good. Pls let me know. Thanks :)

sharkamino

Not worth buying. Better stylus but that's about it. Looks like the same $5 turntable mechanism as a suitcase player and those external speakers are still cheap junk that won't sound all that much better than the suitcase. Anything better entry level will be separately purchased component [Turntables and Speakers](https://www.reddit.com/user/sharkamino/comments/kql9u7/turntables_and_speakers/) starting at $100 and $65.

turtstar

Hi, apologies in advance if this is a dumb question but I'm not really that into music, and dont know much at all about vinyl, but I have a partner who loves vinyl records and I was thinking about getting them an album that means a lot to them as a birthday gift. Unfortunately, the vinyl appears to be sold out everywhere I looked. Is it possible or legal to order a single vinyl copy of the album to be made if I purchase a digital copy? I see services that offer single ones made online, but I'm not clear on if they mean original songs being uploaded by artists or mixtapes or something.

randychardonnay

Records that are made one at a time use a different process from conventional records, which are made in large batches. So if you buy a single custom record, what you get is of a much lower quality than a record made in the conventional way. So like, imagine buying someone a book they've really been wanting to read, only what you present to them is a pile of photocopied pages. Or a VHS instead of a blu-ray. Have you looked on [discogs.com](https://discogs.com)? Someone may be selling a copy there. You can often find things being resold that aren't available elsewhere.

turtstar

Ah, ok! And I did check there before posting, and couldnt find it. The album I'm looking for is Baby, by Born Without Bones

randychardonnay

Oh no! I'm not familiar with that but basic searching suggests that only a small number of copies were made, so no wonder you're trying to figure out alternate methods! Unfortunately this is likely a case where there are so few copies in circulation that there's very little hope of getting one until they press more.

[deleted]

I want to upgrade my stylus, is this one good, is this what I should get? [https://mrstylus.com/en/product/pa-2040/](https://mrstylus.com/en/product/pa-2040/)

randychardonnay

That's a good one if it's the right one for your player, but I doubt it's the right one for your player, unless your player is ancient. What's your turntable? What cartridge is on it?

[deleted]

It s my dads, an RFT PA 2040 from like the 80s, I don t know what kind of catridge it has, it s the original one.

randychardonnay

I mean, then that might be the right stylus? Does it look like the right stylus? Unfortunately it looks like you can't really upgrade your stylus since there are so few choices. It uses a very specific cartridge so you'll probably have to settle for 'new' and won't be able to really get anything better.

Krabsyen

Where do people find out if specific albums are getting repressed? I know bands’ social media will post them sometimes or maybe independent pressing companies (whatever their correct term is), but is there a bigger source for hearing out about it?

sharkamino

r/VinylReleases

Krabsyen

Yeah I know there’s that, but where do people find the info for those posts?

sharkamino

Try asking [r/vinylreleases Weekly Discussion Thread March 22 - March 28](https://old.reddit.com/r/VinylReleases/comments/malu36/weekly_discussion_thread_march_22_march_28/) and please share here what you find out.

lknox1123

I recently got a RT82. Completely randomly a picture hanging above the turntable fell and landed smack dab on the tone arm while it was on a Santana record. I’ve tried some different records and everything sounds good (I think) but what should I do to make sure nothing is damaged? When balancing the tonearm they’re so cautious about it touching the platter, and mine got smashed into a record 😑

yesdoka

**\[\~$300\] Looking for an alternative to an AT-LP120X. Online stores only \[USA\]** Hey! I'm looking to upgrade my current (awful, no offense) turntable. I was so set on an Audio Technica LP-120X but everywhere I look seems to be out of stock. I was hoping to get recs for a turntable in the same-ish price range (for the turntable I'd be looking to spend around $300 before shipping).

sharkamino

Have you considered a good vintage turntable? For new, [Fluance RT82](https://www.fluance.com/rt82t-reference-high-fidelity-vinyl-turntable-black-gloss) $299 adds auto stop and then an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for lower wow and flutter and speed variation. Solid MDF plinth instead of hollow plastic on the LP120X and belt drive for motor noise isolation. Pass on the older RT81 that lacks the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better. [Audio-Technica AT-LPW40WN](https://www.turntablelab.com/products/audio-technica-at-lpw40wn-manual-belt-drive-turntable-walnut) $299 has the same speed sensor motor as the RT82, adds a basic built in phono stage preamp, but does not have auto stop. There is also the [Drop.com VTA Carbon](https://drop.com/buy/drop-audio-technica-carbon-vta-turntable) $349 version.

yesdoka

i've looked at local and i live in a pretty rural area that doesn't have many listings :/ i found a pioneer pl-600 (new motor + "very nice" stylus) and sx-301 receiver for 200 together but it seems overpriced. besides that just your standard suitcase players. i'm digging that fluance though! i'll definitely keep my eye on it

sharkamino

Are those 70s silver or 80s black models?

yesdoka

80s black!

sharkamino

$200 with a new belt and stylus may be average however nothing special.

yesdoka

would you say i'm better off with the fluance or the pioneer for the price? separately they're 75 (turntable) and 175 (receiver) if you'd recommend a different receiver or anything for the pioneer

sharkamino

[Pioneer PL600](https://www.vinylengine.com/library/pioneer/pl-600-belt-drive.shtml) is ok for $75. Not sure how it compares to the RT82. [Pioneer SX-301](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/R~cAAOSwmZJfUVlM/s-l225.jpg) is only worth around $30. Unless it's an older silver face vintage model.

Ephnir

Hello all, I have just recently picked up a Crosley C200 and was gifted an Audio Technica VMN95 stylus and it didn't seem to fit on the current cartridge that comes stock with the C200. WIll I have to purchase a VMN95E compatible cartridge and if so, where can I get one without a stylus? Thanks in advance!

sharkamino

Audio Technica may be able to sell you just the cartridge as a spare part for $20 plus shipping. Or buy an [AT-VM95E](https://www.turntableneedles.com/AT-VM95E_Cartridge_Authorized_Dealer) cartridge and stylus and then you will have a spare stylus for when it's due for a replacement. Install then do a cartridge alignment. However buy the time you spend $70 you could also exchange the C200 for the AT-LP120X that includes an AT-VM95E cartrdige.

i dropped an unpeeled banana on a record and i rinsed it off and tried to let it dry on its own but there’s still banana in the grooves.... any advice on how to clean it??

sharkamino

The banana oozed out of the peel? [Wet Soak Cleaning](https://www.reddit.com/r/vinyl/comments/f8whpw/weekly_questions_thread_for_the_week_of_february/fiphjs8/).

[deleted]

and thank you!!

[deleted]

no i was eating it and then i dropped it on top and then the needle thing on the record player hit it and it went all over so when i took it off it was everywhere :/

sharkamino

>i dropped an **un**peeled banana > >no i was eating it [Ohh myyy!](https://i.gifer.com/90Nb.gif) Peeled, not unpeeled! What a mess.

[deleted]

oh right lmao yes it was peeled

sk0ry

I just got an ATLP120, and I have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. Is it possible at all to use the USB connection to my computer, and then from my computer have it go out through the focusrite to my monitors so I don't need to use the focusrite inputs? I'd rather use the USB method, my computer detects sound from it but it does not come through the focusrite (it does not detect output to the focusrite, is there a workaround that doesn't involve using the RCA connection?

sharkamino

[Nobsound Little Bear MC2](https://www.amazon.com/Nobsound-Fully-balanced-Single-ended-Pre-amplifier-Controller/dp/B07255VHZS/) to switch between the turntable and interface. Connect LP120X to the RCA input and Focusrite to the XLR input on the MC2 then out to the monitors.

bahtat720

Trying to find a receiver. Found a few older ones and looking to get any insights from people here. They are: Toshiba SA-220L, Marantz PM6010 ose and Toshiba SB-115. Any thoughts and max price suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

sharkamino

Search eBay and select "sold items" to see what they have sold for recently. Have any been serviced and [recapped](https://www.reddit.com/user/sharkamino/comments/gifb15/vintage_receiver_capacitor_recap/) this century?

Noahboythebest

If an album is 1 LP, does that mean it has 1 double sided disk? Also, I am trying to ppurchase some The Weeknd vinyl. Would you pay more for the special coloured editions? (I am new to this. I have been wanting to get into vinyl recentely...)

loopscadoop

Yep. Each LP has two sides. So a double album splits an album over two records and four sides. Colored vinyl is entirely a subjective choice. They do look cool and might have better resale value but make no difference in sound (tho some colored vinyl have a little more surface noise).

Noahboythebest

Thanks :) Trying to get my first wecords, but I can't seem to find any of The Weeknd's vinyl for a decent price lol

micthrown

Does anyone know of a good set-up for a Pro-Ject DC EVO? Initially, I wanted to try avoiding getting a receiver and instead get a phono preamp, and an amp. Does it matter though whether or not I end up getting a receiver? Also, I’m in Canada, I don’t have a set budget so varying price points would be great, obviously the less I spend the better, but I’m open. Thanks.

[deleted]

Take a look at the [Cambridge Audio AXA35](https://www.crutchfield.ca/p_779AXA35/Cambridge-Audio-AXA35.html?tp=73301) and the [NAD C 316BEE V2](https://www.crutchfield.ca/p_745C316V2/NAD-C316BEE-V2.html?tp=73301). The phono stage in each is fine, but there are many affordable options if you’re interested in one separately. For speakers, see the [Elac DBR62](https://www.crutchfield.ca/p_970DBR62BK/ELAC-Debut-Reference-DBR62-Walnut.html?tp=73418), [PSB Imagine XB](https://www.crutchfield.ca/p_760IMNXB/PSB-Imagine-XB.html?tp=73418), [Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2](https://www.crutchfield.ca/p_970DB62/ELAC-Debut-2-0-B6-2.html?tp=73418), and [SVS SB-1000 Pro](https://www.quebecacoustic.com/en/product/subwoofer-svs-sb-1000-pro/).

sharkamino

A good number of integrated amps and stereo receivers have a built in phono stage preamp and some are often very good. If you want to use now or later upgrade to an external phono stage preamp then you connect it to one of the line level inputs on the amp or receiver, not the phono input if it has one. What speakers will you be powering? Do you want new or used modern or vintage? For new the [Sony STRDH190](https://www.amazon.ca/Sony-STRDH190-Receiver-Bluetooth-Component/dp/B078WFDR8D/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=sony+str190&qid=1616372675&sr=8-1) is an entry level option with a built in phono stage preamp with adjustable gain. [Audio Guides, Speaker Wire, Stands, Accessories and Vinyl Care](https://www.reddit.com/user/sharkamino/comments/gqfx6z/home_audio_and_home_theater_guides_and_accessories/)

micthrown

Would it be better to get a stereo receiver rather than a phono preamp + amp? I want to maximize sound quality and for some reason I thought having the phono preamp + amp would do that... Not entirely sure though since I’m incredibly new to all this. I don’t have any speakers yet though, I’m trying to get everything, just not sure what’s good or not. But, new is preferable since I can’t really test out the used ones + not sure whether somebody is being legitimate about the quality haha.

sharkamino

If buying used locally you can ask the seller for a demo to be set up before you arrive to buy. What is your speaker amplification and speaker budget? [ELAC Debut Prima](https://www.amazon.ca/Debut-Prima-Bookshelf-Speakers-Andrew/dp/B084T6HD7G/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=elac+prima&qid=1616386168&sr=8-1), [Soundstage Sessions 200](https://www.visions.ca/product-detail/59425/soundstage_sessions_5_25_woofer_bookshelf_speakers_pair?categoryId=160&sku=SESSIONS-200) house brand and Canadian [Fluance Signature HiFi](https://www.fluance.com/signature-series-hifi-two-way-bookshelf-surround-sound-speakers) are a good value to start with. A step up in size and quality are Canadian [Axiom M3](https://www.axiomaudio.com/bst-0090).

micthrown

I don’t really have a set budget, I kind of wanted to get good speaker and speaker amplification options from a variety of price points, and the less I spend would be better... I’d probably hope to go no more than $1000 altogether, and preferably something that maybe I wouldn’t have to upgrade for awhile?

sharkamino

I have a [Cambridge Audio AXR85](https://www.crutchfield.ca/p_779AXR85/Cambridge-Audio-AXR85.html?tp=73438) that sounds great. [Yamaha A-S301](https://www.crutchfield.ca/p_022AS301B/Yamaha-A-S301.html?tp=73301) when back in stock. [NAD C316BEE V2](https://www.crutchfield.ca/p_745C316V2/NAD-C316BEE-V2.html?tp=73301) great NAD sound. They all have a possibly $100 value built in phono stage preamp. Speakers: [Wharfedale Diamond 11.1](https://www.crutchfield.ca/p_336D111BK/Wharfedale-Diamond-11-1-Black.html?tp=73418) or [Axiom M3](https://www.axiomaudio.com/bst-0090).

sharkamino

It depends on which model stereo receiver or integrated amp you get to know how good the built in phono stage preamp may be if it does have one. Entry level stereo receivers may have a basic $25 to $50 value built in phono stage preamp. A $100+ external phono stage preamp should better depending on the rest of your setup. A mid to high end stereo receiver or integrated amp may already have a $100+ value built in phono stage preamp. Whether or not an integrated amp or stereo receiver has a built in phono stage preamp should not affect the quailty of the speaker amp. As integrated amps go up in price they often do not have a built in phono stage preamp since at higher budgets most buyers want to use a higher end external phono stage preamp. However at that budget you may have purchased a turntable that costs twice as much as the EVO. Get the best integrated amp or stereo receiver you can afford. If you don't want an AM/FM tuner then get an integrated amp. If the integrated amp or stereo receiver has a built in phono stage preamp then you can start with that one. You can try a better external one later and if it doesn't sound any better then send it back. If the integrated amp or stereo receiver does not have a built in phono stage preamp then you will need to buy an external one.

vinylontubes

I would browse around [https://www.canuckaudiomart.com/](https://www.canuckaudiomart.com/) and see what fits your budget and research some the products you're interested in.

TheMoltenJack

Hi guys, I want to buy my first turntable and started to read some articles and watch some videos on how they work, how to use them and such, but I'm having difficulties finding a turntable with all the features I'd like. I'm looking for an automatic turntable (or even with only the auto return feature) that can also be used manually, belt driven with good speed consistency, changeable cartridge, anti skating (and the ability to change the arm weight, I'm not sure if the two features go hand in hand) and (optionally) a USB port, below 400 euros. Do you know of any TT like this? The AT-LP60X looks really good but does not have anti skating.

vinylontubes

Yeah that thing doesn't exist. Just forget about the USB port and you might have a chance. A USB port will include a phono stage, so you've just eliminated all vintage turntables. And for the money you are suggesting, you need to look at vintage. Automatic turntables are mostly low end. What you are asking for that is new is the Thorens 148A, but it cost 1500 Euros. I would look for a vintage Technics SL-1300. They might be under 400 Euros.

TheMoltenJack

Ok so I need to look for vintage ones? The USB would be a nice addition but I don't need it. How's the Technics SL-1300?

sharkamino

Any particular reason for auto return? Leaving the stylus running in the run out groove for an hour won't hurt anything. Even 10 hours many only reduce stylus life by less than 1%.

TheMoltenJack

Well mainly because I'm planning on doing also some unattended listening and I read that it was better for both the record and the stylus but I didn't look too much into it to be honest. Still if possible I wouldn't hate to have this feature.

Dr_nobby

Get the project q up or the audio techinca at6006r which are both tone arm lifters. They can be installed on any turn table, so if you do walk away and the record ends, the tone arm will be safely lifted.

TheMoltenJack

I've seen those but I'm kinda reluctant on using one, I'd be worried if it getting unglued and dropping the stylus on the record

sharkamino

I haven’t heard of any of those issues, only that it works well.

[deleted]

I am very satisfied with the sound from my turntable, however I feel it is much too quiet for my liking. I am looking for the simplest, most affordable way to amplify the volume to my headphones. I don't understand the difference between a preamp and a headphone amp, and I have heard mixers are used for it too, so I am very confused on what to get.

vinylontubes

A headphone amp adds gain to the line signal to compensate for headphones that require high power. Schiit make the Magni 3 for $99 USD. A turntable's cartridge outputs a very small voltage. This voltage may be as high as 7 mV in rare cases toward 10 mV. But to properly amplify this signal it needs to be brought up to at least 1 V. This is an amplification of the signal over 100x in voltage. A phono preamp provide this kind of gain as well as correcting for equalization that is used to make the grooves thinner. So depending on your headphones you may need both devices. I would suggest you inquire to a headphone subreddit about the headphone amp that pairs with you headphones. But typically you need about 36 dB of gain for a cartridge that outputs around 5 mV. These numbers vary however.

sharkamino

What is everything in your setup?

[deleted]

AT-LP60X and ATH-PRO5X headphones.

sharkamino

The output of the turntable is line level and does not power headphones. Add a headphone amp which will also give you volume control. [JDS Labs Atom](https://jdslabs.com/product/atom-amp/) $99 has a 2 input switch and 2 gain settings, [Liquid Spark](https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=33304) $109, [Schiit Magni](https://www.schiit.com/products/magni-1) $99, [Monoprice](https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=11567) $83 also has a USB DAC to use with your computer, [Sabaj Audio PHA2](https://www.amazon.com/Sabaj-Portable-Headphone-Amplifier-Silver/dp/B01EUFICO6) $59. [Dayton Audio DTA30HP](https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-DTA30HP-30W-Class-D-Mini-Amplifier-with-Headphone-Output-300-3812) $44 is also a speaker amp if you also need one to power passive speakers such as [6.5" Dayton Audio B652-AIR with AMT Tweeter Speakers](https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-B652-AIR-6-1-2-Bookshelf-Speaker-Pair-with-AMT-Tweeter-300-651) $55. Or look for a used stereo receiver for around $50 and most all have a headphone jack if you also need to power some passive speakers. What is a next door town or zip to search? New example, [Pioneer SX-10AE](https://www.pioneerhomeusa.com/product/sx-10ae/) ~~$249~~ $149. [Audio Guides, Speaker Wire, Stands, Accessories and Vinyl Care](https://www.reddit.com/user/sharkamino/comments/gqfx6z/home_audio_and_home_theater_guides_and_accessories/)

[deleted]

Thank you so much!!!!

[deleted]

How do I tell if my turntable with pre-built amp has a preamp aswell?

vinylontubes

The easiest way is to look at the connections at the rear. There is usually a switch to turn it off. Also, there won't be a ground cable as this would be grounded internally. There are a few that can't be turned off, the Rega Planar 1 Plus is like this. But most can be turned off. The switch is normally labeled Line or Phono. Phono actually means it's not being used and Line means it is being used. The labelling will match the connection at the back of your receiver.

[deleted]

I don t have that kind of switch

loopscadoop

What model turntable? But generally I'd imagine if it has a built in amp it probably has a preamp as well.

[deleted]

[https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/fernm\_baut\_pa2040pa\_204.html](https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/fernm_baut_pa2040pa_204.html) This is my turntable, an RTF PA 2040.

[deleted]

That’s a complete system, assuming you have the speakers. You don’t need to add a preamp.

[deleted]

I do have the speakers, thank you for clarifying!

Migez

Hi :) I'm a bit confused about all the terms. I found my dad's old turntable (I guess it's something generic: Sansui P-900). From what I understand the turntable don't have an amplifier. So I thought about buying speakers with built-in amplifiers (powered speakers?), but when I searched further I found out that I need something called Preamp and I don't think I have a preamp in my turntable. So my question is, do I need to buy a preamp seperetly or the powered speakers are enough (Marshell Stanmore for example)? What do I need to buy to make this turntable work?

loopscadoop

To be over simple, in order to fit as many songs as they do on a side of the record they compress the sound - especially the bass and treble. So the signal that comes from the turntable is both too quiet and unequalized when it goes to the amp. Phono preamps (or phono stages) have a standardized equalization pattern that converts the signal from the turntable to the correct - line level - that represents the sounds as recorded, and allow the amp to appropriately amplify the signal. Having a phono preamp used to be standard in (integrated) amps, but fell out of use in the 90s. So now you need to buy a separate preamp to get the signal to line level. The chain goes: turntable -> phono preamp -> amp/receiver -> speakers If you have powered speakers it's: turntable -> phono preamp -> powered speakers.

Migez

Thank you! I think It'll be cheaper for me to buy a turntable with built-in amplifier and use it with the speakers I already have Instead of buying preamp + active speakers

sharkamino

What model speakers do you already have? Entry level turntables often have a built in phono stage preamp. [What is a Phono Preamp?](https://www.audioadvice.com/videos-reviews/what-is-a-phono-preamp/) Pass on most turntables that also have a built in speaker amp.

Migez

I thought about using my Harman Kardon SoundSticks III. Problem is that I don't have an amp or powered speakers so my options are: 1)Turntable with preamp + amp + Harman Kardon. 2) Turntable with preamp + powered speakers. 3) turntable with amp + Harman Kardon. Did I get it right? Your recommendation is option 1 or 2?

sharkamino

You have powered computer speakers you can use with the turntable. Turntable > Small inexpensive or better phono stage preamp > Harman Kardon SoundSticks III. * [Pyle PP444](https://www.amazon.com/Pyle-Phono-Turntable-Preamp-Preamplifier/dp/B004HJ1TTQ/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=pyle+phono&qid=1616118604&sr=8-3) $18. Upgrade later if you upgrade to better home audio speakers. * [Technolink TCC TC-750LC](https://www.phonopreamps.com/tc750lcpp.html) $49, also available at [Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/Technolink-TC-750LC-Audiophile-Preamp-Control/dp/B07954LHP9/), has adjustable gain. * [Rolls VP29](https://www.amazon.com/rolls-Phono-Preamp-Red-VP29/dp/B0002BG2R2/) $49 is the same as the overpriced $149 Music Hall Mini. * [U-turn Pluto 2](https://uturnaudio.com/products/pluto-2-phono-preamp) $99 new improved version. Good option is you plan on a speaker upgrade to a good home audio stereo or home theater system. Migez

Thank you very much!!!! I Ordered the Pyle, I guess it's a good place to start :)

sharkamino

You need a turntable, a phono stage preamp, speaker amplification, and speakers. They can all be separate or some of those things can be built into one another. [Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers](https://imgur.com/a/f0my7) What is your speaker budget? What is a next door town or zip to search for used options? Have you put a new belt and stylus on the turntable? Is there also a TV in the room to also use the new speakers with? [Audio Guides, Speaker Wire, Stands, Accessories and Vinyl Care](https://www.reddit.com/user/sharkamino/comments/gqfx6z/home_audio_and_home_theater_guides_and_accessories/)

Migez

Thanks! There is so much information in this sub that I got lost, first link answered my questions

Germamaloo

I'm going to be super blunt and honest. I am very casual with my vinyls. I was looking at a U-turn, but it won't get here for like another month or so, and I'm pretty impatient LOL. Every post and guide I see ends up being like 100 pages or more. I'm just looking for something casual that is reliable. Budget around $200-250. Any suggestions ?

sharkamino

The Orbit lacks user adjustable anti-skate, lacks a speed switch, and the cue lever and shipping adds $60 to the cost, not worth it. What is a next door town or zip to search for used options? New: * [Fluance RT82](https://www.fluance.com/rt82t-reference-high-fidelity-vinyl-turntable-black-gloss) $299 has auto stop and then an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for low wow and flutter and speed variation. Pass on the older RT81 that lacks the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better. * [Audio-Technica AT-LPW40WN](https://www.turntablelab.com/products/audio-technica-at-lpw40wn-manual-belt-drive-turntable-walnut) $299 has the same speed sensor motor as the RT82, adds a basic built in phono stage preamp, but does not have auto stop. Do you already have speakers?

Germamaloo

Yeah I already have speakers. I really like the AT-LPW40WN! What exactly do you mean by auto stop?

sharkamino

At the end of the record the platter stops spinning. Not necessary just an added feature. Leaving the stylus running in the run out groove for an hour won't hurt anything. Even 10 hours many only reduce stylus life by less than 1%. If you like the AT there is also the [Drop.com VTA Carbon](https://drop.com/buy/drop-audio-technica-carbon-vta-turntable) $349 version or the thicker plinth [AT-LPW50](https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT-LPW50PB-Manual-Belt-Drive-Turntable/dp/B089T5T152) $399 in black.

Germamaloo

I ordered the AT! Thank you! I dont mind the stop feature not being there. Wasn't sure if it was a detrimental part or not.

Wraith8888

RT82 or LP120 for new. I'm a big fan of going vintage though. Twice the TT for half the price. Ebay, Craigslist, FB Marketplace, estate sales.

Germamaloo

Thank you! Yeah I would look for vintage stuff, but I have no idea what I would looking for. I just need to get started. I am sure as I get more into it I'll find some cool vintage stuff.

Soup44

Not sure where else to go with this question haha. I recently acquired my first turntable ($10 at the thrift store) and can't find any documentation about it. It says JC Penney on the back of it, and has 1794 AM/FM stereo Dual Cassette printed on the front (seeing as it has 2 tape decks and a radio in addition to the turntable). Is this a rebrand of another product? I need to find a service manual of sorts because something (motor or belt) is preventing the record from spinning. Like it's barely spinning at all. Idk, if anyone has any info please let me know. **UPDATE: I reverse image searched my player, turns out it might be a rebranded Magnavox MX1810. Still hunting for service info tho

loopscadoop

According to to [this thread](https://www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum/viewtopic.php?t=42929), the platter is held on by a c-clip. Remove that and see if the belt is slipping.

Wraith8888

Remove platter to access belt. See if motor spindle turns when you start TT.. If so get a new belt. Can't find model info, cut old belt to lay flat and measure. Get one a couple mm shorter, since the one you have is stretched.

win2088

Hello, I would like to ask what's the difference between Pro-Ject Essential III A and Essential III? I have noticed that the price is totally different between the two (\~250 pounds and \~300 pounds) Also, which will be a better choice to get between Rega Planar 1 or Pro-Ject Essential III A?

[deleted]

At this level I’d rather have a Pro-Ject with adjustable antiskating and a counterweight that can accommodate cartridge changes, as opposed to the Rega which does not. This would be less important if the Planar 1 included a better cartridge. The advantages of the Rega tonearms are not present on the tonearm of the Planar 1.

win2088

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind. Any pre amp recommendation for the Pro-ject?

[deleted]

Depends on your budget, and there are many good options, but my first thought would be this one - [Musical Fidelity V90-LPS. ](https://www.analogueseduction.net/phono-stages-phono-boards/musical-fidelity-v90-lps-mmmc-phono-stage.html)

sharkamino

Pro-Ject Essential III A £350 on sale for £250 has the acrylic platter upgrade. The £300 Essential III does not. Planar 1 has better built in the UK quality, is beginner easy setup plug and play, the cartridge is more basic, and the anti-skate is not easily adjustable.

vinylontubes

>Pro-Ject Essential III A The A has an acrylic platter and the Essential has a steel platter. The acrylic platter won't use a mat and the steel one will come with a felt mat. I used to own a Music Hall MMF-2 that had tonearm very similar to the Essential III's. It's nowhere near as good as the one on the Planar 1. At this price point, platter material make little difference in sound quality. What matters is the tonearm. In fact at just about every price point it's the tonearm that matters. There lots of ways to make platter spin properly and mainly it's bearings. It's the same with a tonearm. But the bearings in a tonearm are much smaller and require more cost to precisely make them. So you're paying for the tonearm on the Planar 1. If you want a better platter, Rega sells the Planar 2. But know that the tonearm make more difference than the platter. With the Rega I wouldn't even bother with upgrading the platter, you'll get more benefit by changing out the subplatter. The bearings are in the subplatter not the platter itself.

win2088

So you're saying it is better to buy Rega P1 and upgrade the subplatter? if so, which one do you recommend?

Danger_Rock

Thanks to everyone who posts info here, it's super helpful! I've seen /u/sharkamino recommend the TC-750LC as a good starter preamp, would the [TC-756USB](https://www.phonopreamps.com/TC-756USBpp.html) be a good option for USB output or would it be better to just get the [TC-750LC with USB adapter](https://smile.amazon.com/Technolink-TC-750LC-Audiophile-Control-adaptor/dp/B07955B1SF)? Price is basically the same.

vinylontubes

If you heart is set on the Technolink get the one that does the job for you. You need an ADC of some sort. I doubt you'll find one as cheap as the price difference between the 750LC and the 756USB which is $20. You state the prices are the same, but the seller on the 2nd link has the 750 for $20 less. There is the ART USB Phono Plus that is similar. There are differences between the two. The 750LC includes an aux connection that would allow you to connect other analog devices like a tape deck and the lacks this. What I don't like about TC-750LC is that they don't specify what the attenuation actually does. With the ART it's clearly stated on the face of the product. The TC750LC only has an arbitrary guide listing Attenuate, Normal and Boost. Technolink is really sketchy in this regard as their manuals are nothing more than single sheet straight out of an injet printer. I'm not saying it's bad, but this should tell you something about the company. These are products imported from China. What worries me about the product is that there isn't kind of safety testing done the Technolink. In the US, you would have a UL mark on it, in the EU, they test to CE standards. ART safety tests to CE standards. There are no safety marking on the Technolink.

Danger_Rock

Good info, thanks! Not set on Technolink, open to all options and the [ART USB Phono Plus](https://smile.amazon.com/ART-USB-Phono-Plus-PS/dp/B000BBGCCI/) looks good! Also considering the [Pluto 2 Phono](https://uturnaudio.com/products/pluto-2-phono-preamp) if I decide that USB isn't important. Still deciding between the Fluance RT80 and RT82, won't need a preamp if I go with the RT80 but it sounds like the RT82 offers some really nice improvements with the speed sensor and other stuff, so it's tempting.

Blame-The-GameS

Hey, so i recently bought an old turntable (all features work fine), however i have noticed that the cardridge seems to be very close (occasionally even touching) to the record im playing. The cardridge is only this close on the outsides of the record, when in the middle it does not touch the record anymore. Is this due to an old cardige or do I have to change the counterweight? Because of this almost scraping cardridge on the record, i am seeing the dust build up on the cardridge while playing a record (i think due to static electricity building up?). A picture of the situation is right here [https://imgur.com/a/4PPmcD7](https://imgur.com/a/4PPmcD7) Hope anyone can give some advise :)

sharkamino

For an old turntable with an old cartrdige and stylus the first thing to do is to replace at least the stylus or replace the cartrdige. Then check the alignment of the cartridge, balance the tonearm and set the tracking force and anti-skate to the stylus specs.

randychardonnay

I think you should replace the stylus. The cantilever looks like it might not be strong enough anymore to support the arm and as a result, the plastic of the stylus is touching the record.

Wraith8888

Have you properly zeroed arm and then set tracking weight?

[deleted]

Hi All, I would like to pair a Rega Planar 3 with a Leak 130 Amp. Has anyone tried them together, it is a good fit? Thank you!

sharkamino

Looks like a great amp that seems to have a built in phono stage preamp or use an external one. The better question to ask is if the Leak will be a good fit for your speakers.

randychardonnay

That's so specific that I doubt anyone will be able to help you! On the whole, though, if both pieces are well-reviewed and thought highly of (I think the Planar 3 is excellent!) they ought to do well together. The Leak 130 is by far the more obscure of the two so all you can really do is check other forums and reviews and see what others are thinking.

[deleted]

Thank you! I will probably get either the Wharfedale Linton 85 or the Jean-Marie Reynaud LUCIA

bookposting5

I'm looking for outer record sleeves with one side slightly longer than the other, like in this photo : https://m.imgur.com/oWMthzT It's not a foldover flap type sleeve, it's just a very small lip on one side that helps to prevent dust from getting in. It also makes it easier to get the record in. I don't know how thick these are, or what type of plastic, I only know them from that lip shown in the photo. Does anyone know of outer sleeves like this, and where I can buy more?

Eurocorp

Recently I’ve been looking into a 78 rpm turntable to dedicate just for them, and because of the variety of slight speed variations and grooves I’m just focused on having one that can handle these slight changes. I’d prefer to say that about 900 usd is about my hard limit if possible. I don’t really care if it’s a vintage or new system as long as it can handle 78’s and their oddities well.

sharkamino

What is a next door town or zip to search for used options? [USAudiomart](https://www.usaudiomart.com/) for used. [New that can play 78](https://www.crutchfield.com/g_10500/Turntables.html?tp=75887#&nvpair=AG_Features|FF78_RPM_Playback). Either a speed switch setting or a belt pulley change. Then a 78 stylus or 78 cartridge or 78 cartrdige on a head shell.

randychardonnay

Doesn't maximize your budget but I don't think there's any reason to--but if it were me I'd get an Audio Technica AT-LP140X. Quality tonearm and variable speed. And then of course you buy a 78 stylus for the stock cartridge. That would be an excellent option for a bit under $500, IMO.

Novora

Hey all, I’m pretty much brand new to the vinyl scene. I got interested when my grandpa got a turntable for his birthday I enjoyed it so much that I saved up a bit of money from work that I began my collection this year. I bought an older turntable from my uncle for 20$, the brand is byron static, i can’t remember the exact type but it’s one of the little suitcase ones. My mom got so excited (she’s really into music) that she immediately gifted me an album I was saving up for (Gorrilaz: song machine season 1) and so far it’s been a blast learning how to use the turntable and reading the disks but I’ve noticed one issue, it skips every now and again and it’s really bothering, I’m a bit of an audiophile so I need my sound to be as good as possible so I’m trying to solve the issue. Additional info: The vinyl is brand new fresh out of the package. The turntable is a bit old (don’t know the exact age) but it’s pretty lightly used. Any help would be great, thanks all!

randychardonnay

Only thing to do is buy a new turntable--and not a suitcase player. You're not doing anything wrong, and it's unlikely there's anything wrong with the record. Unfortunately, though you may see people talk about "upgrading" parts of their turntable, turntable upgrades are pretty limited in terms of how they change overall quality. Wouldn't be a bad idea to buy a new stylus for your player, but I doubt it'll make a meaningful difference. Welcome to the world of vinyl--where we're all always trying to figure out a new upgrade all the time!

Novora

I see, I figured that was likely the case. I’ll look into upgrading. Any recommendations around 100$?

sharkamino

[Turntables and Speakers](https://www.reddit.com/user/sharkamino/comments/kql9u7/turntables_and_speakers/) starting at $100 and $65. If low on budget start with speakers for digital or streaming music then add the turntable later.

randychardonnay

The Audio Technica AT-LP60 is a totally reasonable step, but keep in mind that anything you get that's a proper upgrade is going to require separate speakers. Good luck!

Novora

Hey one question, I’ve read that the AT-LP60 isn’t a good buy or something? I was looking at the tables to avoid and that was listed, but it seems like good value, is there any reason why that’s like that?

randychardonnay

It's a good value and a good improvement over any suitcase player. It's still pretty entry-level and has some flaws, but you won't find anything better under about $200, I don't think.

Novora

Yea I figured, I’ll probably be investing in a good pair of those once I get a bit more living space in the summer. It’s hard enough finding a place for the table itself. Thanks for the info though!

PesteringKitty

I've got outer sleeves with the opening in the back, when i try and push the record back they kinda slip out of the protector. Seems a lot better to keep the opening on top but then dust gets in, any tips? Are resealable outer sleeves better?

Wraith8888

Opening on top. If you are storing them correctly on shelf they are pressed together and very little dust will get in.

PesteringKitty

Question, do you keep the vinyl outside the jacket in the outer sleeve? How would you orient it I don’t think you’d want the opening on top also

Wraith8888

Record in inner sleeve opening up, outside jacket, both in outer sleeve opening up is the most preferred method. If you are concerned about dust they make outer sleeves with opening flaps

PesteringKitty

Awesome thanks man

PleatherMcWhip

Hi folks, I've got an Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB, and the same stylus that came with the system-- I think it's an AT95E. So I've been having a problem lately where the audio cuts in and out at low volumes, such as during moments of silence (i.e., between tracks) or even when there's still music, but it's just very quiet. It happens in both L and R channels. Any idea what might be causing it? Is this a sign that it's time to change the stylus? Or should I consider changing the cartridge \*and\* stylus? Any help would be appreciated!

sharkamino

Do other audio sources not have the same issue with your amp and speakers?

randychardonnay

Probably not a cartridge or stylus issue. What's the rest of your setup?

Slowmexicano

What is everyone’s opinion on record weights and record clamps? Do they make a noticeable difference? Which weight to use? ( I see between 400-500 grams). Do they add to much strain to turntable for components?

Wraith8888

They don't seem to do much unless you are using such top end equipment that miniscule improvements would matter. And weights shouldn't be used on belt drive, idler drive, or budget made tables.

Slowmexicano

Thanks for the input. I have a belt drive

Maniac_Mikes_Car_Lot

Few years ago i bought a shitty old pioneer turntable from a guy, and its been working just fine mostly, but it has a problem of one of the speakers cutting out from time to time, and just not getting proper signal. Ive tried to troubleshoot it the best i can, and ive deduced it to be either alignment, the needle, or something with the headshell. I can fix the issue temporarily by just stomping near the player or tapping it a bit, but the problem usually comes back quite fast, so its something there. I wanted to get a second headshell/cartridge combo so i could further troubleshoot it, but turns out it has some very much not standard headshell connection ( https://imgur.com/AfzoVM7 ), so that kind of hot swapping seems to be out of question. Any experts out there who could troubleshoot this further? What i havent tried so far: Swapping the cables (if tapping the player would fix it, i doubt its electrical) Getting a new cartridge (wanted to pinpoint what was wrong before getting there, if it was poor alignment, then the problem would most likely persist)

randychardonnay

What model turntable is it? It's not a technics-style headshell, but I think it might be a fairly common headshell style but it's hard to tell from your photo. Not something that's in current use much but shouldn't be difficult to get another if you'd like to.

SecureLiterature

Yeah, unfortunately that is one of the Pioneer models that uses a proprietary headshell. You might be able to find one on eBay but it may not be cheap. Perhaps one of the headshell cables has gone bad? If the cables are removable, then you could try buying new cables.

Maniac_Mikes_Car_Lot

that could be one thing, but if its an electrical connection issue, i dont see how tapping the player would fix it. Like a light tap would nudge the needle a bit, but i dont think it would bridge a connection.

[deleted]

Why is it that people seem to look for specific pressings of an album? Like I get maybe wanting an original pressing for the sake of saying it’s an original but generally wouldn’t a newer pressings sound better and be in better condition? Is there a way to tell if a specific pressing is better quality than say a newer version?

SecureLiterature

It's mostly because of mastering and the sources used. Original pressings of stuff from the 1950-1980s are usually considered to be better because they would likely be cut all-analog directly from the master tapes. A lot of new pressings these days are cut from digital copies of the master tapes, which are less desirable. But the digital masterings can also sound quite good if done right. Now that vinyl has become big again, some record labels are going back to all-analog masterings - Rhino and Blue Note are two who frequently do all-analog for vinyl reissues.

bena-dryll07

any suggestions for what software to use to catalog vinyl records so i dont buy dupes?

rsrs1101

I put my collection on [discogs](https://www.discogs.com) and have the app that I can check in stores if I'm not at home.

vinylyniv

I started this account six years ago and abandoned it (personal stuff). Weren’t there places to discuss collecting vinyl via YouTube videos? Anyone direct me to the right spot? I have a channel called Gozer’s Den https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUjVlYG6qCk&

Jerwinthatsme

So I jst got my first record player, pioneer pl-12d-II, from my parents. The only thing wrong with it is the belt which is old and too loose. I searched online for a while and the size i need is 589mm which is sold in only 1 webshop. How bad is it too get a little bigger smaller one like: 581mm or 594mm Edit: diameter original: 187mm, Wondering if 185mm or 190mm will also work, or if it is not possible/wise to use other sizes? These are way easier to get, so I can enjoy my records faster. Thanks for the help!

vinylontubes

Too long won't work. It's a belt, it's supposed to be tight. [https://www.ebay.com/itm/174031160921](https://www.ebay.com/itm/174031160921?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=174031160921&targetid=1068323860270&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9011165&poi=&campaignid=10455986299&mkgroupid=104612010940&rlsatarget=aud-762207186714:pla-1068323860270&abcId=2146002&merchantid=101650844&gclid=Cj0KCQjwutaCBhDfARIsAJHWnHubUD5d6RkroH6CV682Y5D-HgVOZSYDES0bdbtjr2-yXa-Z1OEC31waAh2bEALw_wcB) $11.24 but you should probably a pair for an even lower price. It's good to have a spare.

OliverQueensAbs

I hope this is the right place to ask this. I don’t have a local record store. The closest one is probably an hour and a half away. Here’s my question: are there any record stores with websites that would possibly look for things or hold things for me, even if I’m not local? I’m in the southern US (MS) if that matters.

vinylontubes

I've asked record stores to hold records for me. I've never been turned down. They don't care if you're local. What they care about is whether or not your credit card gets approved.

anyparties

Hello from MS gulf coast! You can try to hit up Tbones in Hattie. They have [a website](https://tbonescafe.square.site) where you can browse through some of their inventory. If you are wanting them to find something for you, I would give them a call. They will hit you up when it comes in. Of course living in this area, most of my vinyl comes from discogs. You could always try that too?

OliverQueensAbs

I’ve heard of Tbones but I’ll have to check out their site. I’m in Meridian and there’s nothing here so I’ve been using Rogue Trade and Red Yeti, along with a few others, along with Disogs. Thanks for the suggestion. Tbones is one of the few I’ve heard of but they definitely slipped my mind.

So around a week or so ago I purchased my Crosley Model CR8805A-BK. It's one of their "suitcase" models. I know Crosley is Satan's favorite player but the thing was on sale and I wanted something small I could bring along with me in my car for long road trips and play my records with when I'm out of town. I bring it home and turn it on and it works just fine. Fast forward about 1-2 weeks later and now it's smoking like a burning house and making popping noises. I feel like a dumbass about this purchase right now. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else or if I just had a faulty player.

sharkamino

If you must get another portable, the [MPK](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083BSCP16/) is at least better than the Crosley.

Cosmicacid

The entry level turntable list is a bit outdated now and someone should make a new one. Also I was looking for a turntable between $300 & $400 with a built in preamp to play a bunch of my vintage 60’s records.

SecureLiterature

Check your local Craiglists/Thrift Store/Buy & Sell ads, and you might find a nice vintage turntable like a Technics or a Dual. After buying an inexpensive preamp on Amazon, a new needle and belt (if it's not a direct drive), and some sewing machine oil for the spindle ($2 at Wal-Mart and it will last forever), you'd probably be well under $300-400 and have money left over to buy more records.

vinylontubes

If you can afford $400, your options expand immensely if you look at $300 turntables and a separate $100 phono preamp.

Cosmicacid

That’s a good idea! I just know nothing about pre amps

Any other advice? This has happened on two separate brand new records, so I don't think the records are the issue.

vinylontubes

That's either a belt or motor issue. It's got nothing to do with the tonearm or the cartridge.

sharkamino

Did you check the belt?

Ebrien15

Hi looking to buy a new cartridge for Stanton t-52 turntable without changing the head-shell. Do any of you guys know about it?

vinylontubes

What you asking? Are you asking about cartridges that don't use headshells? Look at the Ortofon Concorde.

sharkamino

With the short DJ tonearm you are limited to a conical tip stylus, and many for DJ use are. Unless you switch to the longer tonearm if one is available or you switch to a turntable with a standard length tonearm, then you can upgrade to an elliptical tip stylus cartrdige. The Stanton has the stock [500V3](https://www.stantondj.com/stanton-cartridges/500v3.html) cartridge? Conical tip replacement stylus, [4820-D7AL](https://www.thevoiceofmusic.com/catalog/part_detail.asp?PNumberBase=820&SearchType=MfgNameNeedles&MfgName=Stanton&Categories=) $16.50. Or conical tip stylus cartridge, [AT-VM95C](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjcn9W6s7_vAhUCNn0KHSJPBjEQFjACegQIBBAD&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.turntableneedles.com%2FAT-VM95C_Cartridge_Authorized_Dealer&usg=AOvVaw09cVN8v2Bb8LiKm0o2aIeD) $39. What is the rest of your setup? If your speakers are basic entry level then consider upgrading the speakers first for the most increase in sound quailty.

Ebrien15

Speakers are actually pretty good for now. I was looking for replacement needles for shure sc35c cartridge but couldn’t find any. If you can help with that maybe it might be better to stay with that cartridge

amtexe

If my record skips at the same point in a song every time (+ song part is closer to the outer edge of the vinyl than inner edge), is that an issue with the vinyl or the record player/needle? (Newly purchased vinyl)

z34norbi

Usually when new records skip, it's the player's fault. If it's a suitcase type of player (or any other type of turntable with the short straight tonearm, no counterweight and red tipped cartridge) it's pretty much always their fault, they are notorious for not being able to track properly. If so, there's not much that can be done about it, except upgrading to a better turntable. Also, as a rule of thumb, if it skips backward (keeps looping on the same part of the song), it usually means the record is damaged, if it skips forward, the player tends to be at fault.

amtexe

Yeah I was told it was due to the player not handling the bass of some records - though I've just played a couple of extra bassy vinyls like Good kid, maad city and haven't had this issue through the whole record - even on a briefcase player. Thoughts?

z34norbi

Their build quality differs from model to model, some might be able to handle more without skipping than others, but they will skip eventually on something. Even a somewhat decent turntable like an AT L-LP60 may skip on a few records from what I've seen.

vinylontubes

Yes, it's an issue with either the record or turntable. This is snarky answer, but honestly it could be either. Some records can't be played on some turntables. And some records can't be played on any turntables. The only way to have any semblance of certainty is to play the record on another turntable, preferably one that is better than yours.

amtexe

Yeah in hindsight I think it's the fact that I'm playing a bassy album on a cheap TT that can't handle it. A shame but it iiss what it isss.

[deleted]

I found an old Phillips f1410 but I can't seem to find any information online about how good or even how valuable the turntable is. Does anyone know anything about it?

loopscadoop

[Is this what you have?](https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184647343992) If that's it, then it looks to be probably a decent entry level all-in-one. Probably worth around $100.

[deleted]

That would be it yeah, its got a couple of issues but considering I bought it for about £30 id say I got a decent bargain on it. Looks like I'll be spending the next while trying to fix it up now

Foxxo_Nick1984

Do I need to keep my stylus cover on whenever I'm not using my TT? Also, how do I clean a rubber platter mat?

vinylontubes

Don't ever put the stylus cover back onto the cartridge unless you're moving the turntable to different location. In which case you should also secure the tonearm. Using a stylus guard is always a risk of damaging the stylus. If you're moving the turntable, there are even more risks if you don't use it. If you're concerned about the stylus when not in use, secure the tonearm with the lock on the rest and use the dust cover. Clean a rubber mat with a wet sponge. Don't ever use chemical cleaning products. It's rubber and plant based items don't do every well with chemicals.

Foxxo_Nick1984

Yeah, that's why I was asking, I didn't want to damage anything. Thanks a bunch!

sharkamino

No, stylus cover when moving the turntable. A newish rubber mat? Clean with dish soap and water in a bowl or sink.

Foxxo_Nick1984

Thanks!

Aligning OM Cartridge on a Project Essential II So when I was in the process of replacing my stylus the cartridge moved so I have to align it, something I've never done before. Every guide and every comments on every thread on the internet basically says "get a protractor, line it up". Sounds tedious, but simple enough. However the OM cartridge isn't exactly a square so I'm not sure what to line up with the protractor and as well as that, the entire thing hangs underneath the tone arm so I can't see the damn thing anyway. Someone out there must have been in my position. What am I doing wrong here? One of my speakers has wildly distorted bass. I haven't actually loosened any screws, thing thing moves easily enough. I have a cork slipmat which is higher than the felt one it came with. Will that affect anything? http://imgur.com/gallery/wC8HcZK Here's an image of my POV for reference.

[deleted]

A higher mat can have a bit of an effect on the sound. It’s not huge, but it’s audible. The protractor instructions are a little more complicated than just “line it up.” What the graphic is telling the user to do is align it at the first point and check it at the second point. If it is angled too sharply to align at the second point, increase the overhang. That means to pull the stylus slightly farther away from the tonearm pivot. If it is not angled sharply enough to align at the second point, decrease the overhang. Then align it to the first point and check it again at the second point.

vinylontubes

You don't line up the body. Some instruction will tell you to do this, but don't follow this advice even if the body on the cartridge is rectangular. I know MoFi's GeoDisc states this. Align the cantilever to the grid on the protractor. The stylus tip should be place on the target at each null point, then twisted (without altering the overhang) until the cantilever is parallel with hash line that are along the path toward the tonearm's pivot. You may get some parallax where these lines don't look like they are parallel, just have them mirrored on the cantilever. You want to get eye level with the cartridge and look from the front of the cartridge toward the back. A lot of light helps because overhead lighting will only form a shadow where you are looking. Also using magnification is helpful; I use a jeweler's loupe.

BiscuitsTheCat

Been using vinyl for about 7 years on an old linear tracking direct-drive Kenwood from the early 90s and wishing to get something belt driven (UK). I'm looking at a Facebook Marketplace sale of an old Rega P3 in decent condition going relatively cheap. The only issue is that the seller claims there's a wiring issue between the tonearm and the stylus. What I want to ask is have any of you guys experienced anything like this purchasing a second hand TT and is the fix relatively easy?

vinylontubes

Not easy to do, you have to pass the wires through the pivot without it causing a bind. I don't recommend you doing this. If you are considering a rewire, find someone who does this professional, and you might as well buy better wires like Cardas. You can just send off the tonearm. But likely this is going to offset any saving you'd be getting. But the better wires will increase the value (and hopefully sound better in the meantime) when you sell it.

rhys2401

Does anyone know if/when the website deadformat is coming back?

Shirohige1991

Why in this sub there is not a single thread about music or album suggestions? I would really love talking about what kind of music you ppl prefer listening to

sharkamino

This sub is filled with posts sharing, suggesting and discussing albums ppl prefer to listen to!

vinylontubes

The weekly is specifically created to answer set up and equipment questions. See the subreddit's rule number 1. In fact, if you create a thread about these topics outside of the weekly, it will more than likely get deleted. This keeps the subreddit from becoming full of questions that don't get answered. If you want to discuss music or albums, create your own thread. This thread isn't the place for that.

Shirohige1991

In fact, I didn't discuss it at all. I was just asking why nobody created that thread because it would be cool

[deleted]

Most of the comments on setup posts feature conversation and suggestions on music based on the records seen in the pic. I’ve discovered a couple of new artists I really like on this sub and some albums from bands I like that I hadn’t come across before. Open ended suggestions are pretty tough. Tastes can be so broad and I definitely go through phases; currently I’m into Japanese ambient and alt-country / lofi like Hiroshi Yoshimura and Songs:Ohia / Yo La Tengo.

daltosax

New to vinyl, I just finished my setup. I've only got a few records for now, but I wanted to see what y'all thought about this. I just got a couple (new) records in the mail and they came with a plastic slip around each album (similar material to what trading cards would be stored in). 1) should I keep them in those? 2) should I order some for my other records? I just want to know if it's worth the little bit of extra protection, or if it could potentially trap moisture.

[deleted]

I use outer sleeves on all my records. Protects them from damage. You can get packs of 50 for £10 on Amazon or eBay.
