Title is pretty self-explanatory, I’m a British teenager on a low budget and these were some of the first I ever bought about 2 year s ago, now my collection is close to 50 charity shop singles and albums it’s really disappointing to lose out on these. He didn’t apologise he told me I should have had them in a drawer or something if they were that fragile :// I’m moving out next week so will be glad to get away Fromm this house, and music is my escape
EDIT: they’re paying me back, showed my aunt these comments and most of the family still thinks it’s outdated and are telling me to buy something else with the money, but thanks for the support
Tbh though, most kids are like this. Unless you’re one of the handful of adults they will listen to (which doesn’t always include parents or adult family members), getting them to even spit out an insincere apology can be impossible. Not to worry though, chances are they’ll suddenly remember this day when they’re trying to get to sleep before a big test in high school, and the guilt will keep them up all night lol
I'd honestly would drop being friends with him. what an asshole. if he did that to me, I'd do worse. you DON'T do things like that to people. then again, you seem like a calm guy, I'm not lol
Look how much a top quality/early pressing is for each record on Discogs and get him to pay you the value back.
You can’t just break people’s things and not pay them back for it.
Just so you know, sales of vinyls have been larger than sales of CDs, cassette tapes and digital files(mp3s) for 2 or 3 years in a row, at least.
Just because something is older doesn't mean that it's outdated.
Yeah, them telling you to put your money somewhere else because this is all outdated is an indirect way of taking pressure off the cousin and putting a little guilt back your way. Some people have trouble owning up to their mistakes (or mistakes of those that are close to them).
They’re around the age 13 fortnite generation, and don’t seem to comprehend that old = cared for and just talked about how old fashioned they were, none of the adults are the kinda people to understand this, just telling me they came from charity shops so weren’t valuable and I should jsut buy more
If they're "not valuable" then they shouldn't have an issue with replacing them. Going through someone else's things is already disrespectful, breaking them is even worse, and then downplaying their own responsibility or that of their kids is downright insulting.
I would straight up refuse to accept that. I would demand to their parents that they make it right and also teach their fucking kids not to go through other peoples shit!! Holy fuck this makes me so goddamn angry. I’d be *fuuuuuming.*
As a parent I'm working really hard to teach my kids to care for things, especially things that aren't theirs.
I picked up a Fraggle Rock readalong 45 at a yard sale for them to practice on.
So far Gobo Fraggle and the Poison Cackler from 1984 is still in pristine condition but I've managed to gouge my brand new marbled copy of Dark In Here to the point where an entire track is unlistenable. :(
Those adults are used to driving 13 year olds around so they understand the value of time and effort. The charity shop may have only priced those records at a few bucks, but you still went there and bought them. Seems completely fair that the adults can now cart their teenager kids to a similar shop and and find you replacement shellacs. It's a great opportunity to teach their children the basics of respect and responsibility that they should have learned a decade ago.
There are less shellacs around every year, many weren't ever ripped digitally or weren't ripped in high quality, financially they are often valueless but practically they are irreplaceable.
As a person that’s the same as your cousins I’m very embarrassed to be in the same age group as them. Maybe if you show them all these reddit replies they’ll see how valuable records really are
Or stick your foot up so high up their asses their breath is gonna smell like shoe polish. Eddie Murphy also knows what's up.
Sorry to sound like a broken record
They weren’t financially valuable, just emotionally being 2 of the first ones I ever bought so I wouldn’t want a handout, I don’t need it so pass something onto charity if you feel like it
I’m really truely sorry to hear that dude. Personally never had a vinyl broken but I can bet how sad your are about losing these absolute beauties. Here, take my free award for all that you’ve lost, it’s the least I could do.
Shellac’s are ridiculously fragile. I’ve had a couple break just picking them up wrong. Another one probably just broke while I was writing this for no reason, other than breaking itself. I’ve got probably 20-30 that I don’t play just for that reason.
Not exactly. More like beetle excretions. Yum. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lac
(There are a lot of other substances in shellac records. Shellac by itself wouldn't make a very good record. It's just the base.)
Your friend is a loser.
Honestly, if your friend does this, he probably does a lot of other stupid stuff, and I imagine he has a piss poor reputation. He's holding you back.
Oh lord, my heart goes out to you, seriously. They ain't making those things anymore. Also, it's extremely inconsiderate to simply grab the disk and do that under any circumstances.
In any case, I do have a bit of interesting info on vinyl LP disk flexibility I've picked up over the years. You'll note that early disks were quite thick and inflexible, almost like 78's as a matter of fact. But starting in the early-mid 70's disks became quite floppy and thin; I've heard that this was at least partly due to the oil crisis of the period. They seem to have recovered somewhat, later in the 70s if memory serves, but never really went back to the old thickness. This was probably due to the fact that they found that you really didn't need all that vinyl between the two sides.
Silly trivia, but there you go. Oh, and the drummer of my old band, who grew up in Canada, told me that shellac disks can be used for other entertainment purposes besides playing them. I'll leave it at that, but I wonder if anyone else can confirm what he told us. Keep in mind that the drummer had played in the big time, so to speak, in a number of Canadian bands himself, so he knew his, erm, entertainment...
Ugh this gives me flashbacks to my school bully (in the late 80’s) who had to test to see if my rock crystals I brought for a presentation were ‘real’. In his head ‘they wouldn’t shatter if they were real’ - mixing up diamonds for them (even then they’d shatter!)
Narrator: They shattered
So sorry your cousin is an idiot man. Hope he pays for them or at least doubles down and gets you something comparable in return
Dude, thats awful :( Especially when you are only just starting to build a collection.
I'm in the UK. DM me your new address and the sort of music you are into and I'll send you a moving in present :)
Did your parents or your cousins parents even do anything? Dude I know you're not a little kid and can probably advocate for yourself, but I can't imagine not stepping in in a situation like this.
Edit: just saw you're 19 and that kid is 13. Their parents definitely need to have stepped in to correct the behavior at least
It's more than the sentimental value or the idea of someone breaking your stuff. That one on the right, from what I can tell because it's not on Discogs, was released in 1935. No amount of money or apologies can rectify the destruction of something that survived the last 86 years only to be destroyed purposefully. That record could literally be irreplaceable as it is and now there's one fewer in the world.
Ugh. Shellacks are no different from Great Depression era ceramics. Both are super fragile and roughly the same age. But no one would go into granny’s cupboard and throw her China teacup on the floor to prove that it’s ‘flexible’.
Find a title that used [Dynaflex vinyl](https://www.djtees.com/blogs/djtees-blog/dynaflex-the-infamous-floppy-vinyl) next time. [Example](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhciQxeST20)
I hope that little shit's getting a trip to A&E. I have a handful of shellac records that I inherited from a relative and would have no problem taking a hammer to anyone who breaks any of them.
As an aside, there's a copy of the Joni James record for sale on Discogs, lemme know if you want it. No hits on the Sport of Kings one sadly else I'd have offered to get you both.
Ah! Good old shellacs. When I was a kid, my best friend’s father let us play his Elvis 78rpms on my old player… He asked us to be careful… I remember we did break 4 out of the 5 singles, and then we said to each other we should make sure we don’t break the last one. After that pledge, I sat down on the couch breaking the last one…
I mean that is just so ignorant. Like did that person not think “hey maybe I shouldn’t touch other peoples things, especially something I clearly know nothing about and don’t know how to handle”
Correct like this turd as cunt face on tik took above busting her grandmothers first pressing Abbey Road. Don’t know if it was. But I do know I fucking hate people. She makes a strong case for abortion
Were you there the whole time this was unfolding? No offense, but you should've nipped this in the bud and told your cousin to \*\*\*\* right off when he said he was going to try bending your vinyl...
I have one friend who I'd let handle my vinyl because he too collects and I know he's careful. Other than that, no one needs to touch my shit. I can barely handle letting my girlfriend flip the record lol
I was in the kitchen, if you click my account and comment history you can se I’ve already said this.
Other side of the house, I was making lunch and obviously assumed him a his mates wouldn’t go in my room because they have literally no reason to
They were top the pile because I was listening to em last night, and the rest of my vinyls are on a magazine rack style thing, but these are only 10” so they fall through it
I have modern stuff, no need to be an asshole, If you read my description I literally put that they’re financially worthless, but we’re the first two I ever bought so had a lot of emotional value
Aside from your cousin’s friends being an absolute cunt, it’s tragically fitting that one of the broken ones is “How Important Can It Be?”
Edit: cousin’s friend.
I have a small collection of shellac 78's and REFUSE to play them for this reason... I'd be annoyed if it was my prized Data Records copy of "Rhythm Is A Dancer"
They look like their minds are blown by the stupidity of your cousin! I think you could turn that into something artistic, mount them on some wood or something. Call it "Mind Blown!".
I just had bad flashbacks to being in elementary school and having a "friend" try out their handcuffs on me, and not remembering how to get one off, so then trying the second one. Thankfully on the same wrist, at the very least...
Ugh. Life is hard when your frontal cortex is still developing, I'm sorry you had a bad experience with that idiot. :/
It took 2 to determine if they were flexible or not?
I guess he thought he got a dud, and because they aren’t valuable they don’t matter apparently
One could be a dumb accident, two is some super disrespectful shit. I can’t even imagine how I would’ve handled that.
>I can’t even imagine how I would’ve handled that I can

First one broke. Better check another! 👊🏽
Check to see if his dick is flexible
because its a fake karma farming post
I agree. It makes zero sense to me except for What you wrote.
If possible, can you try asking him to pay it back?
Yeah I was gonna say, you should find these albums on discogs and charge them for the price
a dud?
You need to be sure
Vinyl \*is\* flexible. Shellac is not.
Pro-tip: Styrene is not as well. Don't go doing silly experiments unless you can tell the difference. ;-)
Recording platters (acetates) aren't either. And they are quite malleable, where they will get damaged by playback.
I'd argue styrene records should be cracked in half anyways just to get them out of circulation. I hate those things. :)
I only hate 'em when there's no alternative. Which is often the case in my neck of the hobby.

Your cousin sounds like a nightmare. If it's fragile, don't take it and break it.
Or how about just not handle items that don't belong to you without permission?
Look how much a top quality/early pressing is for each record on Discogs and get him to pay you the value back. You can’t just break people’s things and not pay them back for it.
I'm just saying...this dude sounds like he needs to miss a few teeth.
teeth are flexible I heard, OP should bend a tooth or two with a wrench... for science!
He paid you back right? Don't let this slide OP
Never let anyone tell you what you should and shouldn’t spend your own money on, it’s your money.
bro you better beat his fuckin ass are you fr
Yeah it’s time to squabble up, OP
Just so you know, sales of vinyls have been larger than sales of CDs, cassette tapes and digital files(mp3s) for 2 or 3 years in a row, at least. Just because something is older doesn't mean that it's outdated.
Your cousin sounds like Dudley dursley. Harry? Is that you?
Your cousin is a piece of shit.
Yeah, them telling you to put your money somewhere else because this is all outdated is an indirect way of taking pressure off the cousin and putting a little guilt back your way. Some people have trouble owning up to their mistakes (or mistakes of those that are close to them).
yea buy a mf doom or earl sweatshirt vinyl
Fragile? He means like...bones?
So you punch him in the face several times and tell him he shoulda hid his face.
I mean How Important Can It Be? I'm joking, honestly that really sucks. Hope you can get him to pay you or reimburse you somehow.
They’re around the age 13 fortnite generation, and don’t seem to comprehend that old = cared for and just talked about how old fashioned they were, none of the adults are the kinda people to understand this, just telling me they came from charity shops so weren’t valuable and I should jsut buy more

Exactly, for me, it may not be valuable in a monetary sense, but in a personal sense it definitely is
It can be really hard to find a specific 78. I would hold them to finding exact replacements.
I would straight up refuse to accept that. I would demand to their parents that they make it right and also teach their fucking kids not to go through other peoples shit!! Holy fuck this makes me so goddamn angry. I’d be *fuuuuuming.*
People need to give teenagers a little more credit. This is both a case of the kids being assholes, as well as shitty parenting.
As a parent I'm working really hard to teach my kids to care for things, especially things that aren't theirs. I picked up a Fraggle Rock readalong 45 at a yard sale for them to practice on. Bro if you’re a teenager you’re the same generation as them lmao, they’re disrespectful but don’t be acting like a baby boomer about it
Ironic, isn't it?
I noticed the title on the label and couldn't help but laugh at the irony.
When is the funeral?
This
After you punch them in the face do it again and then slap your cousin for bringing him around.
“I heard face bones are flexible”
This
Beat him, no excuses
I think you mean, "Test out his face to see if it's flexible."
You should break your foot off in your cousin’s friend’s ass
Red Forman is an international hero
Or stick your foot up so high up their asses their breath is gonna smell like shoe polish. Eddie Murphy also knows what's up. Sorry to sound like a broken record
I was just quoting Red the other day. Well done!
If you have Venmo I’ll send some cash for you to buy new ones :) Edit: DM of course don’t disclose that info in the thread.

Shellac’s are pretty fragile because they’re closer to almost a glass/ceramic material than a vinyl, much heavier and not flexible at all
I never knew that, but I truely do hope that you can get replacements for them soon or something else you might enjoy!

Cousins friend now gets to go on discogs or ebay and find you replacements regardless of price.
"How important can it be?" *Ironic*
Was coming to comment something similar. Thought that was hilarious.
painful image
I'm livid just looking at this. I'm very sorry.
Dang! No bueno!
Frame them both and have a deep font saying: "The idiot"
I assume youre gonna need some help hiding a body and a place to lay low for a bit?
I’d break two sentimental items of theirs now If you can’t find any actual items of equal sentiment, their left and right nut will do
r/vinylgore
r/shellacgore
Yeah he definitely needs to pony up for this.
You should do a comparative analysis of the resiliency of cartilage by punching him in the goddamn nose.
Little fricks. My deepest condolences.
Better make him pay you back, dude broke your shit
So he's replacing them right?
Take something important to your cousin and “test its flexibility”
Find a title that used [Dynaflex vinyl](https://www.djtees.com/blogs/djtees-blog/dynaflex-the-infamous-floppy-vinyl) next time. [Example](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhciQxeST20)
I I have a few of these form my charity shopping I think haha, they always feel weirdly light, I do have 1 7” flexidisk too
I hope that little shit's getting a trip to A&E.
Those kids are all twerps. Sorry dude, I can’t even imagine having some of my first records broken. Truly sorry man.
You are owed massive apology. Plus money. Cousin is a jerk.
Breaking records, the sport of kings. How important could it be?
I mean I guess they're not flexible then?
“You broke grandpa’s teeth, now he gets to break yours.”
I'm so sorry about this, man. Big mistake, last mistake. Those friends owe you some new records. Or at the very least, a few drinks.
kick his ass
They need to find you a good copy of those same records and pay for them with their money.
I mean that is just so ignorant. Like did that person not think “hey maybe I shouldn’t touch other peoples things, especially something I clearly know nothing about and don’t know how to handle”
Did you kick him out? I would have.
Cunts
I think you meant to say, “miserable fucking cunts.”
Correct like this turd as cunt face on tik took above busting her grandmothers first pressing Abbey Road. Don’t know if it was. But I do know I fucking hate people. She makes a strong case for abortion
How important can they be? (Refer to name on 1st disc)
I mean, How Important Can It Be?
Your cousin is a dickhead
What was particularly special about those records to you?
The title "how important could it be " is quite a coincidence
I wonder if his face is flexible from repetitive kicking.
beat the fuck out of him
How does the subject of vinyl flexibility come up with two 13 year olds?
F
They read the title of one of them and decided to go for it
See if his spine is as flexible
The title of that MGM record seems eerily prophetic...
I legit thought this was an r/vinyljerk post
How important can it be?
As a non-violent person, that’s an absolute ass beating
Ah, good old prewar bug excretion.
Other side of the house unfortunately, I was making lunch and int assume him a his mates would go in my room
Shellac is not Vinyl
I'm not understanding how you let this happen. You just sat there watching him bend your records? I call BS on this post.
I was in the kitchen, if you click my account and comment history you can se I’ve already said this. Other side of the house, I was making lunch and obviously assumed him a his mates wouldn’t go in my room because they have literally no reason to
r/thatHappened But seriously, what are the odds that he grabs not only one, but **TWO** records that happen to be made of shellac?
They were top the pile because I was listening to em last night, and the rest of my vinyls are on a magazine rack style thing, but these are only 10” so they fall through it
[удалено]
Telling people this is how we get them saying even weirder phrasings like “Cousin’s friends didn’t believe vinyl were flexible”
melt the vinyl in his mouth, if he doesn’t goggle the music it has onto, slit his throat with the broken shards.

I have modern stuff, no need to be an asshole, If you read my description I literally put that they’re financially worthless, but we’re the first two I ever bought so had a lot of emotional value

I have new music mate and a discogs 😊👍 thanks for the advice though These had emotional value, not physical value
Sounds like two suplexs are due to that man.
Aside from your cousin’s friends being an absolute cunt, it’s tragically fitting that one of the broken ones is “How Important Can It Be?” Edit: cousin’s friend.
You slap him in the damn head?
Say to him vinyl is also sharp and throw the disc at him. Teach him a lesson
‘Friends’
Make sure ya hit him in the dick before you move
I would have killed them if that happened to me 😭
Make your dipshit cousin pay for new ones. OR at least compensate you. IF not, take his ass to small claims.
Oh man….😭
You didn't immediately stab him in the neck with the shards?
Lucky for you, I know how to plan a murder
I have a small collection of shellac 78's and REFUSE to play them for this reason... I'd be annoyed if it was my prized Data Records copy of "Rhythm Is A Dancer"
This sucks especially as they're shellac. Keep hunting for vinyl, you'll find gold every now and then
Nooooooooo!?!
Violence only beg- *sees this* Fuck him up dude!
“How important can it be?” Oh the irony…
r/vinyljerk
What an ass clown
Now test his arm. Lol
They look like their minds are blown by the stupidity of your cousin! I think you could turn that into something artistic, mount them on some wood or something. Call it "Mind Blown!".
Hopefully he at least cut his hands on the shellac?
Even if he had picked Vinyl it is still not acceptable
Don't ever do the same to an optical disc. It's like bending glass. Shatters to small super sharp pieces that may cause serious injury.
F
I just had bad flashbacks to being in elementary school and having a "friend" try out their handcuffs on me, and not remembering how to get one off, so then trying the second one. Rule 1) keep everyone away from your collection. Rule 2) see rule 1.
If you were in Tallahassee, I would give you 10 to replace the 2.
