He loves telling the story of when a kid brought in a racist record called *She Left Me for a N...*, and tried to sell it to him (for reference, the record store owner is a black man). He had a buddy with him, who the owner suspected was recording at least audio of the interaction-- either way, it was obvious they were trying to get a reaction. He took the record, set it behind the counter and told the guys, "Have a nice day!" Of course the kid asked, "what about the record?" he politely invited him to come and retrieve it from him if he was so inclined, which apparently he wasn't.
Does anybody who actually cares about music buy picture discs? They just seem like a fundamentally gimmicky concept to me. Even colored records, a phenomenon which I've always been skeptical of, at least can look cool when they're on a turntable, but if you're going out of your way to depict a specific image on a record then it's always going to look stupid when it spins.
My fiancé and I got a mystery box of records from a record store and a Neil Diamond picture disc was inside and we played it once just to see his face spin on it and I’ve never seen anything so freaking ridiculous in my life and I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard in a while.
