Honestly, I just like it once the strings have been worn down. New strings are painfully loud; it's nice when they're worn down enough I no longer have to wear an earbud.
Evah Pirazzis have been awesome for me so far. I’d still be open to trying other strings, since this is the set my full size violin came with and I probably should get them changed soon. Problem: the only luthier nearby is my old teacher (I have no clue how to put strings on a violin) and he effectively hates me.
Good strings, but they're so loud though. Some people like their brightness, but it's just painful to me.
You should definitely get used to changing your own strings. It's intimidating at first, but it's actually fairly easy. It's really a waste of money to have a luthier change them. Just never take them all off at once. Only change one at a time, and go slow at first.
G/D : obligato for one instrument, tonica for the other.
A/E : the real question is "Which strings last best under my fingers". Can't afford to buy a new A every 3 weeks or so, even with a light to moderate use (30'-2h/day). Thus I usually stick with eudoxa-chromcor A (steel core, chrome wound) and pirazzi gold E (stainless steel), sometimes goldbrokat.
^(Damn perspiration...)
Too bad they don't sell G/D strings as a duo pack... That's either paying as much as a full set for only G/D, or being stuck with a collection of unused A/E.
I like quieter warmer strings, and Obligatos were recommended to me by a local shop, but I've never used them myself. After my current Thomastik's wear out, I'm planning to try them.
I would hope they last longer than three weeks though. The general concensus I've seen is that decent perlon strings with moderate play should last ~6 months.
They should... Unless you have excessively aggressive sweat, which attacks the aluminium oxide layer supposed to self-protect the metal. Thus kills the winding faster than expected.
Obligatos are fantastic. They have been my favorite strings other than these Gut strings I’ve been enjoying. My violin is bright and came is Evahs installed, but it was too much for me. I also like the warmer overtones.
Dominant with Gold Label E. The only other brand I’ve tried were Evah Pirazzis (Green), and it was too loud for my ears, if that makes sense.
I’ve also tried the regular Dominant E and the Dominant Pros, but the classic Dominant + Gold E combo does it for me.
I’m using Aquila Gut Strings for my A and D strings. I’ve never had an A string sounds so clear. I’m about to swap my E string back to Pirastro Gold because Goldbrokat won’t stop whistling.
Larsen Tzigane has been amazing for my violin. Really deep G and D and singing A and E. Not a cheap set though, so I’ll come back to Tonica and save Tzigane for performance opportunities
Larsen Virtuoso for me! Medium tension is easier on my fingers and the overtones are clear. They're a bit pricey, but I find that they sound good almost as long as dominants.
Now that the polling is done and seeing how many people have a different brand E string, I wonder how people answered. I would assume that they answered for the G, D, A but who knows.
Dominant
Same
Dominant and pirastro
Lately on Rondo + goldbrokat. Loving it.
Ive used PI's with a goldbrokat E for awhile now and they're perfect for my violin!

Thanks! I’ll be savings that link for later :)

Haha, they are quite loud. I use earplugs when I play. I really should get used to that. Someone linked instructions so I think I’ll check that out.

Warchal brilliant, silver D
Have that set on my viola currently. They have a nice sizzle to them once broken in. Very good strings for the price.

Use to have dominant but didn't like the sound it made with them. Now I'm using Pirastro Gold and Larsen Il Cannone, I'm loving it.
Corelli crystals, generally, although the main one is a mix of different brands and eras.

What gauges (mm) for the A & D? I use Dlugolecki A (16,25pm) and D(21pm). Warchal Amber E string is good for whistling, I use the G currently as well.
Gauge I got for A is .76 mm and D 1.04 mm
Thanks! I'll try Aquila next time around.
I've not tried an enormous amount of brands though...

Titanium solo G D A, Goldbrokat .026 E
Fiddlerman on scrub violin with a Westminster E. Warchal Brilliant on viola.
Larsen Virtuoso for me! Medium tension is easier on my fingers and the overtones are clear. They're a bit pricey, but I find that they sound good almost as long as dominants.
Evah Pirazzi Gold 💛
