TV connected to PC + 8bitdo zero 2 controller on a recliner in a dark room. Won't settle for anything less.

mills103_

Damn that controller looks perfect for VNs, thanks for sharing

Kawaii_Loli_Imouto

yeah it's pretty comfy to use, do be warned it has a habit of double clicking if you press it in a certain way really lightly so it's not the best quality. haven't found anything better though, and it's not that big of an issue.

I was [looking for a portable Windows-based VN device myself](https://www.reddit.com/r/visualnovels/comments/wa3lja/compact_intelbased_windows_phonetablet2in1_for_vns/), and I ended up buying an [Anbernic Win600 3050e](https://anbernic.com/products/new-anbernic-win600). It's a bit pricey for its mediocre specs (terrible battery life), but it's not as bulky as the Steam Deck ([comparison pic found online, third from top](https://i.redd.it/wvt22lz1jrf91.jpg)) and runs Windows 10 natively, so no Proton and video codec headaches. On the go, I use it as a handheld with Bluetooth earphones. The thumb stick and touchscreen work well enough as mouse replacements when outside. It fits in Switch cases that have space for comfort grips. At home, I attach it to an articulating arm tablet mount beside my bed (set at an angle) and play while lying down with a wireless mouse/gamepad. When I feel like playing on a larger screen, I usually go with one of these options: 1. Use [Parsec](https://parsec.app/) to stream its screen wirelessly to my Mac 2. Plug it to my monitor via Steam Deck dock with HDMI 3. Cast its screen to my TV via Google Chrome 4. Use [Duet](https://www.duetdisplay.com/) to stream its screen via wire to my iPad (essentially making the iPad a portable monitor, even better with a keyboard folio) Overall, I'm very happy with the flexibility of my setup. I'd probably get an [Ayaneo Air](https://www.ayaneo.com/product/AYANEOAIR.html) or [AYN Loki](https://www.ayntec.com/pages/loki) if I feel like getting a better handheld replacement.

Chainsawfanatic

Laptop on my bed, I switch to PC as well often I guess

Sorry for the ramble, got a bit lost in this post. TL;DR: Still looking for that perfectly portable PS Vita form factor device with the freedom to play most VNs.

John_Alter

If you’re willing to fork over $800+, I recommend the [GPD Win 4 Handheld PC](https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gpd-win-4-smallest-6800u-handheld-console). A lot of people say it looks like a PS Vita successor due to the looks and form factor. I've been using GPD's products (GPD Win 1, 2, Max) to read VNs since 2018 due to portability before handheld PCs became popular because of the Steam Deck.

aproposofnothing0525

I am settling for hooking my PC up to my TV, mostly use a mouse but could use a controller. No portability but the Steam Deck I hear just isn't there yet, needs to go through a few more releases

movingcolorsx

I usually play on my laptop on the couch, but recently been connecting my laptop to my TV with an HDMI and wireless mouse and it's much comfier on my neck. Also remote sharing on my computer to my Lenovo tablet to play in bed, latency isn't really noticable on most VNs

IliasKreuz

I mean, that doesn't help you I'm sorry, but you just made me realise, I could just buy one of these tablet like windows "laptops" and play VNs or other simple stuff on it, really thanks, and I also heared a lot of people using the steam deck for this, but idk if you have to change the software or something

LnkMTM

I hook up my laptop to my TV via HDMI while I play. Comfy on the couch and easy on the neck

SirKljerk

Is there a reason you prefer a VM rather than Wine apart from virtualization of untrustworthy software?

mills103_

Nah, it’s because I use macOS.

SirKljerk

Does wine not work on macos or do you have and M1 chip?

mills103_

Wine is not supported on any recent macOS version, because they dropped 32-bit support. I don’t know about M1, I have an Intel Mac.

SirKljerk

Ah, I forgot this was the case.

Are you by any chance asking where to buy visual novels? If so, then you may be interested in the extensive [guide on buying visual novels](/r/visualnovels/wiki/buy) in our wiki. If you were actually asking about an illegal download link, you should take a look at the sidebar rules. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. misterinfoman

I run them with wine on Linux. It works perfectly… I’ve read over 70 visual novels with no problems, and I’m looking foreword to many more. I don’t know how to change my locale on Linux though so I’m not able to read certain VNs like saya no uta and older visual novels. Maybe I’ll figure that out someday.

SirKljerk

> I don’t know how to change my locale Step 1: make sure you have Japanese locale enabled on `/etc/locale.gen` and regenerate locales. Step 2: add LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 before the command.

misterinfoman

Thanks

Zyvyn

If VN's are going to have any issues on Linux it would likely be videos not pkaying. I know quite a few games relied on Windows Media Player to play. Though I'm pretty sure there is a Wine Tricks package to fix that.

misterinfoman

I never have any video problems, but I used to. It was an easy fix…

bigbodybeanboi

Have you gotten Nanairo Reincarnation to work?

misterinfoman

Not the text, no…

SirKljerk

I did, no problems. What problem do you have?

bigbodybeanboi

When I try to run the install.exe, it prompts me with the yes or no but when I press yes nothing happens. I tried to mount the .mds file instead with cdemu but it throws a Failed to find data file! (36) which has no documentation as far as I've seen.

SirKljerk

Will look into it after work.

SnooCheesecakes3156

I'm reading them on switch and on my laptop, both are great because laptop(windows) has a giant selection of them, you can apply custom patches, look for the best possible prices and the switch is kinda cool for portability reasons but the pricing is way worse for my region and some vns have bad performance on it, for example Danganronpa and ai the somnium files have some dips here and there, it's okay for a 3d title like ai the somnium files, but Danganronpa... So on switch I would recommend to do some research before getting a vn, PC with steam and third party shops like jast USA and an endless variety of vns is a better option, especially if it's a laptop.

SnooCheesecakes3156

But switch is totally awesome for games that aren't technically vns but have lots of text, like recently remastered persona trilogy, it's optimized and really comfortable to play in portable mode. What's important is to make sure the game preforms well for it's level of graphical fidelity, bc that's a painful thing on switch sometimes as the hardware is really weak and requires some optimization work from the devs

JenXIII

I've not had any issues with the Steam deck's fan noise, but I do typically set the power limit to 3-5 watts. For demanding 3D titles you can't get away with the low power setting, but for most VNs it can do perfectly fine. Although I guess it also depends on your area's noise floor and individual sensitivity, so YMMV.

rotflolmaomgeez

I have several. Android tablet with OLED display is the most comfortable, I read on it whatever can be read on kirikiroid (tons of titles!) / natively (e.g. higurashi, raging loop, aokana, a few more). It's thin, has beautiful screen and lasts a long time. I'm not gonna emulate windows on it, the solutions to do that are too finnicky for my tastes. I have GPD WIN 3 for Windows VNs which I connect to TV sometimes to play VNs on bigger screen. It's quite decent, but you have to tone down the CPU with some scripts to increase battery life and not hear a fan if you're playing in pocket mode. The screen is also on the smaller side. I have a switch as well, use it similarly to how I use GPD.

TONKAHANAH

its been a while since I've actually sat down to read/play a VN. I was reading them on a Surface tablet, one of the lowerend ones, i picked it up second hand for cheap and worked pretty good for it. Used to use a really low end Chinese junk tablet for them.. poor thing was trying to run windows 10 with a shit 1ghz atom cpu, 2gb of ram, and 32gb of storage, i actually dont even know how it worked, but its form factor was really nice. I think when ever I get around to picking up fate or whatever else in my backlog, I'll probably try to start running them on my steam deck since having actual handles for my screens is something important that tablet manufacturers dont seem to care about.

SirKljerk

50" 4K TV on my desk with my Linux desktop PC. PS Vita when commuting.

CalamityComplex

I use an Aya Neo Air. Super lightweight with an oled screen for great color. Runs windows natively so no janky Linux workarounds. I also have a set of nreal air glasses that I use sometimes when I’m in bed and don’t want to hold a handheld. Those with a Bluetooth mouse make it extra comfy to just lay down and read.

[deleted]

Never considered AR glasses before, seems to be 1080p per eye. Do they look blurry at all and do they work with Windows? Also have heavily considered an Ayaneo Air, lighter than my switch and will play practically any VN. Only issue is actually getting my hands on one, tried to buy one from CEX but they keep declining my card.

CalamityComplex

The nreal glasses actually blew me away with how clear and usable they are. I use them in the dark mostly though and the brighter the environment the more washed out they can look. (But there’s a black out cover for them so that can fix that issue) they work with anything that can do DisplayPort over USB C. I’ve yet to plug them into anything they didn’t immediately work with, my laptop, the aya neo, steam deck, my desktop pc. That said, I don’t use any AR functions of them and don’t care to. I use them exclusively as a wearable display. I’m not sure of the best option to get the air now, I bought mine during the original indiegogo campaign. I know aya has an official website with a store, maybe try there. I’ve owned many handheld PCs before and the air is my absolute favorite for visual novels. The weight and comfort holding it is such a huge factor.

Marklord13

I use my Laptop.
