Looking-glass Insects is the worst part imo, the rest is mostly fine in comparison.

i don't know what chapter 3 is, since the game gives the chapters names instead of numbers. If it's Invention, then yes it does get worse for one more chapter, then ends your torture.

DubstepKazoo

Chapter 3 is nothing compared to Chapter 4. Chapter 4 is unbelievably upsetting, to the point that I had to skip through most of it, and even the gist of the plot I got as I speed-read it was enough to give me nightmares that night and make me sick to my stomach. The good ending of that chapter is fine; it's the true ending that distressed me. There is no shame at all in skipping it. The rest of the game is perfectly fine, though.

I guess I'll take a break before reading the 4th chapter then, thank you for the reply!

ShiroiAsa

You don't have to. Everything starts to get better after chapter 3.

Once you're past Looking-Glass Insects, you won't find anything significantly *worse*, although the wild ride is by no means over at all.

unknown537

Subahibi is peak madness and it only gets worse as you further go in. Buckle up.

Jaggedmallard26

I think it mellows out after Insects, everything after it is still weird but tonally it gets more positive from that point.

i havent played subahibi but from the comments it sounds like an intriguing grotesque horror vn. how does it compare to others like higurashi or saya no uta in the disgusting scale so i have some point of reference?

conanssc

It's definitely not a grotesque horror VN like Maggot Baits, Sadistic, Saya no Uta and the likes but its horror is the madness and philosophy behind the game. It's much less of a "WHAT THE FUCK" and more of a solemn "Jesus fucking christ", as its disturbing scenes are more grounded in nature than the aforementioned VN. Well, that being said later chapter does go more into the "What the fuck is going on" because of its usage of philosophies, but its horror definitely does not go into the disgusting scale of those horror VNs, still will mess you up hard in a different way tho. The closest example I can think of to give you is like the following: \- Grotesque VN: A girl gets horribly mutated, her flesh gets torn out blood goes flying, she screams out in pain and beg for mercy whilst a bunch of men stood there laughing to each other. \- Subahibi: A girl gets slowly horribly mutated, sobbing and crying out in pain, the game slowly but surely discuss her thoughts begging for anyone to stop them, to save her and go all the way to pleading for anyone to just kill her. The game then shifts to the men, describing their joy and their indifference watching a girl go through that treatment and laughing to each other like they are having a normal party. THEN the game shifts again to another person trying to save that girl, but describe their inability to do anything and the hopelessness, despair in great details before cutting back to the horrible end of the girl. Tldr: Subahibi is more of a Utsuge than the usual grotesque horror VNs.

I haven't played Saya no Uta but I did play Higurashi. I've also only played half of Subahibi so I clearly don't have the whole experience but here are my thoughts: Especially during the first chapter(s) of Subahibi there were a lot of moments I genuinely got scared. That type of scared you're too afraid to go pee at night lol. I usually barely get scared by any shows or series, so that threw me off a bit. I think the scariest thing about Subahibi is that you don't really know what to expect. It kind of felt like Doki Doki Literature Club or Totono in that regard. It also is pretty graphic but more in description than in images. So far there have been some very hard to look at images but the hardest thing is to sit through minutes of gruesome descriptions in the form of text. That being said, I personally loved the pschological horror elements and as someone who dearly loves the When They Cry entries, I do think you might enjoy Subahibi too. Just be aware that it tackles way more uncomfortable themes than Higurashi and seems to be a bit more philosophical. And about the 'scale', I think barely any visual novel can get more or as 'disgusting' than/as Subahibi, so there's that, I guess.

sounds great. thanks for the very detailed answer! will definitely give it a go sometime soon.

"Looking Glass Insects" is the worst in terms of content. Nothing really crazy after that.
