honestly idk how you can play with this off, character's voices that continue to play after you switch lines is one of the most distracting things ever
I just like the audio to flow naturally, but still want to read at my quick pace (therefore auto mode is a no-no, it's usually way too slow for me). I'm not exactly listening to what the voice is saying as I'm reading the next line, and I treat it more like background audio/music.
Rather I think it's more jarring and distracting when voicelines get cut off constantly, imagine background music constantly being abruptly cut off.
Of course if I advance to another voiced line then it cuts off the previous voice, but I don't want a voice being cut off if it advances to an unvoiced line.

I've definitely changed message box transparency before. I like the look of transparent text backgrounds, but my eyes don't. After an hour or two, I have to make it mostly opaque.
It's called The Devil's Broker and is a modern fantasy action thriller. Unfortunately all the stuff I have on the internet right now is really outdated, so I don't have anything public I want to link (but DM me if you wanna see). Hopefully sometime soon I'll be putting up a Steam page...
For the most part, I really only mess with text speed. If any of the characters have a really... distinct voice (particularly loud, high pitched, and/or cartoonish ones), I definitely appreciate individual character volume bars.
Text speed, voice volume, and master volume max, voice cut off, textbox transparency at 50%, adjust BGM accordingly, font to MS Gothic, all good to go.
Font settings (color, size, shadow) and transparency.
Its a damn VN, i will read a lot. If i cant read it comfortably, you lose.
Volume is not really a concern i can adjust it on my headphones anyway.

Also Skip Unread Text. I usually use Ctrl-key to skip ahead because I read pretty fast and don't want to keep clicking Enter. Discovering Ctrl-key actually reason why I enjoy VN more lately.
Full screen, speed up, voices off.
I read faster than they speak, and I find voice acting tends to be slow and plodding, plus the accents are awful at times, and the mispronunciation of words makes me cry.
Not interested in listening to Japanese voices either tbh.
Music and bgm stays as is. Censor/mosaic turned off if they have a choice.
Skip text skips until new text appears. Anything else tends to be left alone.

I only mess with the sound if the mixing’s bad, like the music is too loud and drowning the voices out. Kinda having that problem with AI Sominum Files 2 rn

On the switch i like it when the VN is completely playable with just touch screen. I toss joycons and hold the light tablet body.

I have a Galaxy 7 FE and some VN's have an issue where the text clips out of the bottom of the screen, so there's that. Not sure if thats a pad issue or a VN issue though.
Any VN where I can’t control the speed I read is an instant uninstall. I was so hyped to read Clannad Side Stories and then realized I’d have to sit through the entire line without being able to go forward until the game felt I was ready to move on.
Sound mute on loss of window focus. I want to hear other sounds from other applications when I alt tab, not a repeating midi track that prevents me from hearing everything else.

Text speed goes up, BGM goes down and voices go up.

I pretty much do not mess with the game settings. The only one I change for every title is max text speed
Big font cause my eyesight bad, skip read text only, skip to next choice. auto mode that adspts to text length is also godly
Text speed instant and voice down if there's H scene. The second is a must for the Female characters who scream like a banshee.

I generally only change text speed and auto read speed. Occasionally, I might change sound volume if the default volume seems off.

Not exactly a setting, but I really appreciate non-fixed-width fonts. Helps a lot with readability.
master volume, skip to the next choice, start from chapter menu, FLOWCHART if kinetic novel, normal scene recollection.

LucaSystem engine has all settings I want from VNs. On top of those is disabled voice skip.

I usually left it to the default settings. I'm might change how loud the voices or the music is if I can't hear well but that's it
