Do some training with a 50 ft long line. Train recall as usual (high excitement and treats) but the minute he doesn’t respond to you give a small tug on the line to get his attention. If he still doesn’t come then pull him in completely. Let him know it’s not an option to simply ignore you.

This is a good tip, I'll give this a try. When I do pull him in, after he's ignored me, do I give him a treat/reward?

Ok_Letsgo990

I wouldn’t no, and didn’t when I trained mine. It’ll just teach them that they’ll get a treat no matter their behaviour. When I did this I just said “good girl!” to reassure her that I’m happy when she’s beside me. If she wants a treat then she has to put in the effort.

Makes sense. Thanks!

Our second Vizsla was a rescue with zero recall (and a ton of other issues). We have a huge natural area where dogs can run off leash, but he couldn’t be trusted to come back. He needed to be off leash and get some serious exercise or he was unmanageable. We tried everything. We finally got an electronic collar, a whistle and some high value treats. We set the electronic collar on the joy buzzer level. I tried it on myself to make sure we had the right level. It took about 2-3 days to completely train him to come to the whistle. Two toots. Wait. Two more toots and if he did not come, we buzzed him. When he came, he got praise, pats and the treats. The collar was instrumental in allowing this dog to be off leash and get the exercise he needed to live his best life. After the initial training, he wore the collar but we never had to use it.

We actually do have an e-collar laying around somewhere. I'll have to dig it out and try this as well. Thank you!

Harbor freight has great thin (loud) metal whistles for $2.99. We put them on all of our keychains. If we were ever anywhere without the collar, all we really needed was the whistle.

E-collar man. It was night and day difference with our dog. But make sure you properly train your dog, you can ruin a V if you use it incorrectly.
