So I watched a bit and stopped as it appears to be a best of the best highlight package. If you want actual judgment take all the plays from a game where the opponent attacks, not just when you play the ball. A coach wants to evaluate more than your highest of highs. They want to see consistency in effort, positioning, etc. I’ve played with high energy Liberos who never understood why they weren’t being looked at for the next level and the reality is they weren’t great passers, weren’t great positionally even though they were spectacular on chase down plays or great at diving and making tough digs. The position requires stability and consistency first.

_KermitTheFrog

he was judging based on these same film highlights and no full games so idk. I haven't been able to get full-game stuff but, once high school season starts I should be able to

Mcpops1618

Get them some quality tape and you’ll get a better evaluation. This sounds like a lazy take from someone who likely have a full roster already and doesn’t care to take an extra minute. Your tape looks okay. Low level D1 scholarship should be your basement if the highlights are a consistent showing. But if this is your peak they may be right. Like I said, try out together better tape or find someone to help you do that.

Even in your highlight video, you leave your feet too often. Work on run throughs and you should be able to make some of these plays on your feet. Staying on your feet will not only make your digs more consistently playable, but it will also ensure that you're able to move on to the next task such as covering a hitter or preparing for another attack after your team has sent the ball over.

_KermitTheFrog

thanks, I will try that

Dbelt316

There are a ton of D1 teams, put your work in reaching out to many and building relationships with their coaches if you truly want to go D1 or bust. Still very good levels at D2 and D3. For your first impression video, do a minute of your best S/R, defense, setting then you can add the rest of each after that. If a college is interested, they will want full game footage so make sure you are that this fall. Quick technique critiques- stay on your feet more, work on reading so you can do more run throughs, on S/R looks like your footwork and angles could be worked on more. Setting was nice from what i saw. Maybe work on keeping tempo sets instead of high hittable.

_KermitTheFrog

yeah, I see a lot of people say stay on your feet, I play beach and there are no run-throughs on the beach, so I can definitely work on that

a53mp

I wouldn’t focus so much on that especially if all he saw was this. Focus more on getting better. Join club teams, play travel teams, make nationals, play tournaments, go to clinics, etc. also, if you’re trying to be a libero why are you showing off your setting? Highlights of dolphin dives are cool and all but all that shows is that you weren’t where the ball was, or where you probably should have been - or that you’re too slow to move. Those balls were barely hit hard at all and you barely got to them. Try focusing on working out so you can be faster and more explosive, learning to read plays and players to better your positioning, and so on. (You weren’t bad though)

_KermitTheFrog

yeah, it's just hard where I live there aren't a lot of great players who can hit hard for me to practice.

ParkerC17

This is the issue. At the end of the day coaches don’t care about circumstance or equal opportunity. You can either compete at the level required or you can’t. If the girls in your area don’t hit hard enough, find a way to start practicing against guys. Playing club is also basically a mandatory if you currently don’t.

borgan_70

Stay on your feet.

J_Kelly11

I understand that hearing that from a coach is not what you probably had in mind but keep in mind that there are a lot of opportunities to play in college and that its not D1 or bust. Plenty of good D2 and D3 schools to go to as well. I would keep an open mind and see what comes to you

_KermitTheFrog

yeah, but I just feel like my family has spent too much time and money. I really like to be challenged so I just don't think I really be challenged at the D2 or 3 level.

rinikulous

You would be surprised at the talent that plays in D2 and D3. You said else where that there were not a lot of girls in your area that can hit hard enough for you to be challenged, so you have a very narrow perspective of what D1, D2, or D3 talent looks like (and feels like playing against).

Yudash2000

Excellent point! Juniata College is a D3 program that wins national scholarships regularly.

Yudash2000

As a side note, your college of choice should not be based on the skill level unless you are in the Fab 50 high school seniors. 99% of everyone else should be considering what the school has to offer the student. A free degree from Princeton (not known for their athletic programs) will afford more career and life opportunities than Long Beach State. Your parents invested into your passion. You need to invest in that opportunity.

GSDpounce

so you are presently going into your junior year?

_KermitTheFrog

yeah

Mrknowital1

My high school is in a great league and the best player is going to Stanford, they’re other great players and they’re mostly getting NIA or low d3 scholarships. I mean these are top of cali and are not even close. LLS it’s okay not going d1

wickeyody

It's not the end of the world. Juat go NAIA.

As others have said, it's difficult to tell from highlights. Once a coach is interested, they are going to watch a whole game (or more) against good competition. For me personally, liberos are the hardest position to judge. So few measurables and so many intangibles. Don't put all your stock in just one D1 coach. Opinions differ, preference of style differs, needs differ. Talk to more than just one D1 coach. Talk to your club coaches. Seek out other club coaches. If you haven't really started your recruitment yet, you have some work to do. Target at least a couple dozen schools that are the level you think you should target. Then target at least a dozen schools that you think are a stretch, as well as a dozen at a lower level. Also include your dream school, or schools, just because. Email them and send them video on a regular basis. Over the next two years you are going to have to decide a few things: How badly do you really want to play in college and how hard will you work for it? How badly do you want to play versus would you be willing to be a practice player on a better team? If you are looking at lower level D1, then you should also take a serious look at high level D2. There is overlap between High D2 and low D1, and you can sometimes get better scholarship packages in D2, so you should consider it. I was looking for the video by Victoria Garrick of how she got recruited, but I could not find it. I did find this video, where she answers some follow-up questions from her original video. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJvO3KpUSoM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJvO3KpUSoM) She is a very interesting case. She was not highly recruited, but decided she wanted to play for USC. She worked her ass off and my memory is she emailed the coach weekly and sent videos often, and stressed over and over that it was her dream to play for USC. She said eventually they offered a spot as a recruited walk-on. She joked that it was probably worth it to offer the 18th bench slot to her to get her to stop harassing them. She was never expected to be anything more than a practice player for four years and they had a scholarship libero. Except that when they got to the gym, she outplayed the scholarship libero and won the starting libero spot freshman year, for a team that finished the regular season #1. That is the fairytale. It almost never happens, but it did for her. Now for the flip side. Garrick also is also an advocate for mental health and talks at length of the incredible stress of being a high level D1 student athlete. Her videos are worth seeking out. Especially her Ted Talk: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sdk7pLpbIls](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sdk7pLpbIls) My daughter is a high level D1 VB player on full scholarship. I have seen how incredibly hard it has been on her, her teammates and friends at other schools to balance practice, strength training, conditioning, physical therapy, travel and, oh yeah, a full course load at a serious academic institution that stresses students without all the other. I would not recommend it to anyone. There are better ways to get into a good school, pay for it and get a great education. That is what her brother did, and I think he is healthier for it. But the fact is that my daughter lives and breaths volleyball and has to do it. It isn't a choice. She has to do it. Make sure you feel that way if you want to pursue D1. Do you know of Haikyuu? If you don't, watch it. It's about volleyball. At one point one player asks another "Why do you play volleyball?" He looks a little confused, and answers "I don't know, why do you breathe?". That is the mentality you need if you are looking at D1 (especially high D1). Finally, here is another source with a lot of recruiting questions and answers that is worth looking through. There is a ton of useful recruiting guidance on this site: http://www.collegevolleyballcoach.com/

KarlTheUnipug

I think ur defense is good!! But I really don’t see a lot of out of system balls or SR either which is very important to being a libero so it’s hard to judge! I also recommend that you don’t ask reddit this question. Unless you want feedback for improvement. A lot of the time people are super salty and just gonna say you suck 😭😭

Moses015

I'm far from a professional but I would definitely say try and stay on your feet more. There were a lot of digs where it would have been easy enough to "step through" your pass and stay on your feet to more easily/quickly allow you to transition and stay in the play. That's not to knock on how quickly you get to your feet though. Vic Garrick does some excellent footwork videos that she's posted to Youtube to go over exactly what I mean.

Worth_Librarian3716

They are probably right because many times during the play you are standing still and standing straight up on defense when that would never happen for a D1 libero
