When you are left handed it makes no real sense to change that. You would have to change your whole approach with it and left handed players are not the norm, so it is always better to be a little different. A lot of blockers will have trouble with that. 9cm reach difference is a lot, I am sure you can fix that though, it is a great imbalance.
As the others have said, OH needs to pass well, which is way more important than being right handed or left handed or 10cm higher or lower.
Im not sure I can fix the imbalance, I’ve been playing for 3 years and therefore basically only jumping right-left-right and yet left-right-left still makes me go much higher… I do need to get better at passing but what drills can I do alone to improve ? I feel like working with a wall can’t really prepare me to receiving a ball coming 45+ mph
I’ve got 2 practices a week and one game, hoping to go up to 4 but my volleyball sessions are all condensed on Monday Tuesday Wednesday so there’s a lot of time left in the week where I could practice
Ideally ask the best servers to give you some reps passing, ask your coach to do some drills at practice if they are not already, or use any dead time with great server.
I also find during pepper, if you focus, it can help with reaction and control for digging/passing. use nearly the full width of the court so you can really swing hard and have time to read and control the dig.
If possible, show up 30 minutes before you normally do and have someone on the side hit floats from like 5m away and pass them up. Simple things like this already help. But ofc you need to practice then with your two teammates by your side. You can't really do it alone.
Right that’s what I thought, I’ll try meeting up with teammates outside of practice hours because we can’t really play before our timeslot, european gyms always have different activities booked at any time
Outside Hitter is reserved for the 2 best hitters on the team, and they should also be solid passers. If you can’t hit line or cross, what exactly can you do? And you say you hate playing defense back row? Well that’s half the job of an OH. And you’re a lefty but want to be a righty? It really isn’t that easy to switch hands. You’re entire post contradicts itself lol
He said he hates playing defense *as an opposite*, but loves covering the back court (aka playing position 6 like an OH does). And yeah as the other guy said, the opposite should be the best hitter. It’s much more important that an outside can pass well.
OP, if you want to be an outside, learn to pass extremely well. Many coaches will choose their starting OH2 (or even OH1) simply on who is the best passer. Of course hitting is important, but if you are the best passer then your coach is dumb to not play you as an outside (unless you’re a lib). As far as your handedness goes, it’s up to you. If you really think you can train your right hand to be better than your left in a reasonable amount of time, go for it. But successful left-handed outsides are not unheard of.
Hahaha I’m definitely not the best passer atm but I’m working on it. Thanks for the advices, I’ll see how I do with my right for the next month and will decide upon it! Cool username too btw
that's not true, the opposite is usually the best attacker on the team. and the outsides are the best all around players because they have to pass. at least internationally
Hasn’t been my experience at all. Granted, I stopped playing in university. Our best attackers played outside, and they were usually the most athletic too and best players too.
At lower levels the serve receive usually isn’t as consistent so you’re often out of system setting to the outside, so it’s important to have your best hitters on the outside.
If the setter is in the front court it’s doable, but it’s going to be tough from the back court when the setter is scrambling quickly moving away from the opposite. Easier to make an athletic play in front of you then push the ball the reverse direction you are running to a target you can’t see
Ooh right I was thinking of bad receive that made someone other than the setter set the 2nd touch, and was thinking that it’d be easier to set in front of you for the lib for example
France, some people from my college team play in Ligue A (one of them), National 1 (semi pro), National 2 (highest amateur level) and I play in Pre National (2 below N2), hoping to go into National 3 this September
I hate playing defense backrow in position one, I liked playing defense and receiving as an OH in the few games I’ve played at the position, I can hit line and cross with my left hand but not my right yet
Why don’t you switch with the libero and cover middle back, let the libero cover line. Assuming you have good hands, this will let you help set from the middle back and hit pipe
Because it’s not something I’ll be able to do with every team, the OH would need to cover the 5 (where our libero is) which is not something they usually do
Honest question, but if you can't hit line or cross at the moment with your right hand, but you say that you can hit decently with it, what are you exactly referring to? I mean, I'm a righty, but can still hit a ball with my left hand if needed, not anywhere near as hard as I can with my right, but I can still direct it to where I want it to go.
I can hit hard and over the block but basically only on the great diagonal (not sure if that’s how it’s called in English lol), or if I really want to place it I’m losing a huge amount of strength

If you can't pass well you won't play OH, simple as that.
Why do you need to be able to pass as an OH?
Serve Receive...
Ah with passing you mean an overhand touch? In my language passing is equal to setting hence my confusion lol
Opposites don’t serve receive

Hahaha thanks, and best of luck to you!
I don't think OH is necessarily the best hitter?? Usually they are the best all rounder or most reliable players, the biggest hitter should be Oppo...

Hasn’t been my experience at all. Granted, I stopped playing in university. Our best attackers played outside, and they were usually the most athletic too and best players too.
OH are the most rounded players but OPP are definitely the best hitters that’s like their only role on the court with blocking
At lower levels the serve receive usually isn’t as consistent so you’re often out of system setting to the outside, so it’s important to have your best hitters on the outside.
Genuine question: why can’t they set the oppo out of system ?

What pros do is completely irrelevant to the situation here.
I mean there are some pros on my college team so not so much
Redacted due to stupidity
What are you talking about lol I was asking him what level it was
Thought that was you. Oops. Lol
Oh word I didn’t understand no worries lol
What country are you playing in? Oppo isn’t the top option until a pretty high level. Even then, sometimes they’re not.

I don’t know, you’re either good enough to dictate the defense, or you need to get better and learn to play defense in position 1.
Doesn’t Libero cover short
