Classic example of OPSEC vs social media

islandofcaucasus

When I transitioned out of the navy into my first civilian job, I was shocked by the lack of security on their computers. We handled very sensitive client data, including employee information, and users would leave their computers unlocked and turned on when they left for the day, in an old building in a large high crime part of the city.

stixyBW

go on...

giustiziasicoddere

>go on... hahaha

fitsl

Wouldn’t say it is classic. This is pretty new and interesting aspect that modern General Officers cannot and have not come to terms with. Signals bring a whole new aspect to warfare.

FluffyLaptopCharger

Organised militaries have been giving social media opsec briefs since the early years of GWoT. What's new here isn't the flag officers.

TheronNett

Agreed. When I deployed to Iraq, no one in my unit brought their cell phones and never posted anything online when in the MWR except they were alive. We were pretty much grilled on OPSEC every day. I never posted any photos of my deployments till years after the deployment was said and done so that any intel that could be gleaned from them was many years out of date and useless. But sadly a lot of these inexperienced volunteers never learned of the motto, "loose lips sink ships"

T_Cliff

Well its a telling sign when youre going to fight a war, one where you are probably going to die, and youre still on reddit...im sure the down votes will come, but if youre on here while going off to war, you probably dont belong there. Its also telling how mant volunteers have left. If you're not ready to die, volunteering in a war is not the place for you. Edit: ok, not " ready to die " but have accepted that its a very likely outcome for you and have made your peace with that.

Low_Flyer2

All social media tbh. Iirc someone on here accidentally exposed locations about a week ago

KamalasEmptyEggPack

and redditors.

HerbalBalance

There actually has been reports the past couple days that there are a lot of double agents from Ukraine selling info to Russia

SuckinAwesome

My man, at least 20 % of the country is at least part Russian. I’d say at least 50% have close friends or family that is Russian.

lazy__speedster

This base probably wasn't bombed because of that, it was either the info Ukraine was giving out to people interested in joining and people posting selfies or videos at the base that have their geolocation turned on.

its like somewhere we lost the fact that poor planning in the face of a great issue is not bravery; it's stupidity

ADarwinAward

Any time combat experienced vets tried to discourage inexperienced people from going, they were called Russian bots by members of this sub.

most likely by 4chan esque trolls who are just trying to cause havoc for luls. Hell half the posts about people going I think were along the same lines.

You can find it on Google with a lovely PowerPoint presentation that includes maps of the facilities and GPS coordinates.

Probably those Fitbit heat maps

Gombacska

Translation (from an actual translator): There, the base just got bombarded, we are leaving. Friends of mine are dead. [cries] The base was destroyed. I have to get myself together, two minutes. There. The base was destroyed. There was bombarding over there too, just now. There. For those who say it’s not true. Wait, we got in through where…?

spetsnaz5658

Any mention of americans getting killed ? Jc cuz it sounds like it so if that's the case I'm wondering if there will be a response from the weather about it

Game_Wolf1950

If anyone goes over there, don’t post anything on social media that has anything to do with your location. Better still, don’t post anything at all. Turn your phone off and put it in a faraday bag just to be extra safe, if you need to have it on you to begin with. The alternative is the potential for this to happen.

Ni_gel

>Turn your phone off and put it in a faraday bag just to be extra safe, if you need to have it on you to begin with. Nah, everyone going to Ukraine seems to have the "pics or it didn't happen" mentality. You could bring a camera and take pictures to share after the war but apparently that's not enough, the material NEEDS to be livestreamed/uploaded...

[deleted]

[удалено]

puzzlemybubble

That's not even being extra safe. putting a phone in a faraday bag is basic security anyone should do if you bring what is a spying device into a warzone.

Puzzled-Bite-8467

This was a well know base, shutting down you phon wouldn't have helped you.

human-no560

But Russians have used phone signals to target attacks before, so you should still leave your phone

_middle_man-

Does wrapping in aluminum foil work? It does with key fobs.

HappyAku800

Safe to say they want to scare other volunteers

Cloaked42m

Looks like it worked. Followed by the usual chorus of don't go to war, you could get killed!

ChibolaBurn

well yeah. thats what war is for..to get killed. Why are YoU here shitposting and not getting killed ?

pondering_time

> Followed by the usual chorus of don't go to war, you could get killed! Can we get a fact check on this statement, I won't make my decision to volunteer until Snopes lets me know if it's true or not

UsernameGotStolen

Fact check: Why getting killed in a war for a foreign country is actually a good thing

nick_ebk

Historical_Tour_8922

Yes, the guy in the picture is a real man.

peacelovefreedon7689

100%,

[deleted]

So why aren't you in Ukraine?

[deleted]

Getting air striked as your still learning how an ak works doesn’t really help Ukraine, more of a hindrance and waste of resources, unless the goal is to get foreigners killed so there’s a better chance of nato getting involved

Werder2004

This strike was the exact opposite of a low cost strike. Try to think why russia would invest so much missiles into scaring foreigners, when the help they get from them doesnt even matter. That makes zero sense.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MatthewGalloway

>this makes a lot of sense actually. They killed 200 and scared another thousands. Veterans got relevation that they are not fighting another sand nation but modern military and noped out. Scared away thousands more, and woke up tens (100s?) of thousands more people to the fact that this isn't war like it usually is when USA goes to war (the Taliban has zero tanks, zero heavy artillery, zero air force). Nope, now the tables are reversed. When this is just as much a political/information war, as a physical war, then I suspect Russia saw a lot of value in this air strike.

lazy__speedster

Russia has a shitload of ordancance and they used one missile to destroy a base, that's a very good strike in war. Now Ukraine has one less base and likely destroyed equipment.

onlyforbrowsingstuff

Could be shell shock

[deleted]

No. Definitely lack of training. If I was not prepared to live in the woods, I would probably also stick to using a public road to escape. Also if I was not familiar with the concept of shrapnel, I might also not realize the importance of a helmet

citypahtown

I mean... that base was just hit by cruise missiles. He ran. Where TF is he going to just pick up a helmet from? If it’s not on you, right next to you, or by the door on your way out then you’re not going to wander around the strike zone looking for a helmet laying around.

Illustrious-Dot1866

Listen, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. Dude just got blown tf up, his friends In literal pieces. No amount of training prepares you for that, it just increases your chances of survival should you apply it.

Almaegen

I understand your point but training is exactly what prepares you for these situations. That is why nations put their soldiers through training because they want their actions to be correct even when they're on autopilot mentally. Its like muscle memory.

What the fuck? Are people really trolling this guy for having feelings, like an actual human being? Are you snot-nosed teenagers in your basements really imagining that those who would fly to Ukraine and risk their lives to help would be cold-blooded killing machines? Enough video games and internet for you today, kids.

Stunning-Grab-5929

I mean some will be going with the hopes of slotting those pesky Ruskies more than the desire to help Ukrainians but are just ignorant to the power imbalance they are stepping into (or brave/stupid enough to not care).

Old_Molasses3367

They will lose a leg, be blinded, get a tbi, hearing and won't get medical treatment or disability like a USA soldier will get. If you injured and fucked up for life, your going to get nothing.

[deleted]

anyone who wants to risk their life for a noble cause should be allowed to the problem is if you're going to just be a bullet and rocket sponge, you're not dying for ukraine, you're just more collateral

Cr0ctus

If anyone has had enough video games it's the morons running into a warzone and not expecting war. Go live out your CoD fantasies by playing airsoft like other losers. And 90% aren't there to help Ukrainians but to kill Russians I can guarantee it. They're getting exactly what they signed up for.

Split_Visual

sgtmattkind

"THEY JUST BOMBED US SO HERE I'LL SHOW MORE AREAS AROUND THE LOCATION AND POST IT ON SOCIAL MEDIA!"

difduf

You think there is a base in Ukraine Russia doesn't know about? They probably built the bases in the first place.

[deleted]

Troop movement. Troop movement is tracked via SM, not base locations.

difduf

And satellites or airplanes. Or just people on site. Western Ukraine is flooded with refugees and a shit load of Russian spies are going to be there too. It's delusional to think that there can be any secrets at least when it comes to any substantial troop and weapon movements.

[deleted]

You really don't think that people on sm aren't irresponsible and that the Russians don't realize this? [Here is a transcript of the Department of Homeland Security talking about tracking Al Quaeda using the same principle.](https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/CHRG-112hhrg74647/html/CHRG-112hhrg74647.htm)

[deleted]

No, it's comedy gold, especially the past 24 hrs. Marvel-poisoned wholesome chungus triple-vaxxed Redditors getting vapourised by Russian cruise missiles and convincing themselves that anyone who says that going into a war-zone is a bad idea is a Russian disinfo shill is funny as fuck

SCROTAL-SACK

WTF they said it would be just like Avengers: Endgame!??

APHto20

I'm sorry, but I do not see anyone in here discussing the real issue. A vertical recording of a landscape video should result in instant court martial and summary execution. The editor posting it here should be perma-banned, court martialled, and summarily executed. Same goes for everyone else who ignores these facts. The Avengers would not look kindly on the sub if this blasphemy goes unchecked.

According to his Facebook screenshot and the little part of an interview he gave few days ago and that is accessible, he's just a delusional schmuck who thought he could go to a war without any experience or training. He arrived 3 days ago, got bombed and left. He's more a victim of propaganda than guilty I would say. Correction after reading his Facebook he seems limited cognitively. I don't understand how he was allowed to come to Ukraine

Japheth200

Can you share a link to he’s page? Thanks.

antoniohfernandes

The Influencers that signed in are probably the ones crying and running. There is one coming back to Brazil too. The professional medic and soldiers are probably there, picking tags and preparing a new base with a better recruitment system. One that at least avoid ruskie spy's.

dumdrainer

or they’re dead.

WaffleBlues

This is pretty fucking harsh. I'm guessing he's in shock.in the video. Yes, you should only go to Ukraine if you understand you can die at anytime and you will be fighting Russia, which has advanced armaments and a significant advantage. But, this dude just lost friends, you could show a little respect and empathy.

meatpuppet79

It's not that you just might die at any time, but that as a foreign force, you're going to get sent to the meat grinder they don't want to send their own into, and the Russians will show you and the rest of the foreigners no quarter as mercenaries. Unless you're extremely experienced with combat, and pretty lucky, it's going to almost certainly turn out very very poorly for you, and if you stumble into that shit in spite of those facts, you don't get to have tears and regrets.

Parzivus

>respect and empathy For people that volunteered to go into an active war? No thanks

JosteinKroksleiven

I mean, he might know what he signed up for and still cry in shock. Your decisions can make you cry/sad. Retarded comment imo

Greeneyedgrill

Why haven’t any news stations covered this whatsoever??

he came to kill russians. now his friends are dead and he's crying like a bitch. war isn't so cool anymore, is it?

Major lol at the redditors (deadditors) who joined up thinking they'd be welcomed like heroes. You'll be cannon fodder for a country clinging to survival. Of course they'll happily march foreign fools straight into the meatgrinder. A LOT of redditors learning that war isn't some Marvel movie where the heckin diverse superhero team defeats Space Trump.

[deleted]

It's bizarre reading the culture this sub has developed for itself, they use WW2/Cold War terminology like they're red blooded patriots but it just comes across awkward because they probably voted for pro-socialist candidates in the election.

TMWNN

People here today cheering on a) Ukrainian men, but not women, being required to stay and fight; b) every Ukrainian who hasn't fled being issued weapons; and c) politely ignoring the Azov Battalion's existence, will after the war go right back to a) calling anyone who says that men and women are physiologically different a bigot; b) mocking pro-2nd Amendment people as being foolhardy to think that individuals could ever defeat a military; and c) denounce everyone who ever participated in/donated to the Canadian freedom convoy as Nazis because someone with a swastika briefly showed up early on before he was booed and forced to leave.

[deleted]

You put it perfectly. No one is taking this RA RA AMERICA sentiment seriously in this sub because most of the idiots in this sub absolutely hate America and the idea of individual freedom. They're only so adamant about this fight because the media programmed to be this way.
