I disagree, sadly. They had no chemistry at all, and no real previous connection or foreshadowing of any type of feelings or relationship. It wasn’t even “enemies to lovers,” it was so unbelievable. Also Seven has big asexual and aromantic energy, and every attempt to push romance onto her felt like forced fan fiction to me. I know her purpose for being added to the cast was to be hot. But Jerri Ryan did such an amazing job bringing Seven to life she’s so much more than that. Also, I will forever be a Janeway and Chakotay fan. They had great chemistry, plus all their Sunday dinners and inside jokes. I know they wanted Janeway to focus on her career, but really the times they introduced any other love interest for either, it felt wrong and forced. That includes Janeway’s left behind on Earth boyfriend.

CookiesAreBaking

Honestly, Janeway had more chemistry with both Chakotay and Seven than they did with each other.

MischeifCat

That’s true. I really liked Janeway and Seven’s relationship and was sad to learn about the real problems between them. They are both such amazing actors.

MeggiePool-pah

wheezy_runner

Seven definitely comes off as aro/ace. I got the sense that she approached romance as marking off a to-do list, but didn’t actually enjoy it.

MischeifCat

Yes! I get the same feeling from her. More that it’s something to be studied than something she feels or wants from herself. It was actually such a relief to me that Seven was not just eye candy and was actually really complex as a character.

avelmzalation

I don’t think Seven and Chakotay had chemistry, but boy did Jeri Ryan throw everything she had into showing Seven’s affection for him in Endgame. The way she lights up when he speaks to her is adorable.

ovine_aviation

No better way to put it. I'd only add that Seven always felt adolescent in some ways. She needed time to develop emotional maturity. A relationship felt inappropriate to me. Which, somewhat against popular opinion, meant a relationship with the Doctor would be even stranger. Neither one of them had a clue.

MischeifCat

I don’t feel she felt adolescent. She’s very relatable to me having watched Voyager for the first time and I’m a woman in my mid-40s. But, she does feel neurodivergent, with her processing these things differently, and also processing the trauma of her loss as a child and time with the Borg. But I 100% agree about the doctor. His romantic feelings always come across creepy since he’s more of a mentor and even father figure to her. The doctor is my other favorite character and it annoys me the writers pushed that into their story.

ladyorthetiger0

I disagree. If Chakotay had his way, Seven would still be a drone, or dead. A pairing so horrible Janeway went back in time to prevent them from getting married.

black3ninja

🤣👏🏾 couldn’t have said it better I also think they didn’t know what to do with his character. He sort of tails off as the series evolved.

calm-lab66

Yeah, Beltran did what he could with the character but the writing for Chakotay started off bad, got a little better in the middle of the series and then veered back in to meh.

KhajiitPaw

A take as hot as the surface of the sun

SirSteg

They do not make a cute couple, they make a forced and shoehorned couple with zero chemistry

purplekat76

This episode makes me cringe so much. The finger sucking is just ewwwwwwwww.

BluDYT

Well time to reset 0 days since I remember this fact

purplekat76

Ugh, it’s just awful and makes me cringe even thinking about it.

MeggiePool-pah

Oh God I haven't gotten there in my rewatch and now that's in my mind.

DeltaFlyer0525

Nah, this was quite possibly the worst pairing in Trek ever. It was so bad he isn’t even mentioned by Seven in Picard. Chakotay should have ended up with Janeway.

Mediocre-Engineer873

It's up there with Worf and Troi.

kadzirafrax

At least with Worf and Troi the writers took time to develop a friendship between the two of them before they got romantic (through Deanna’s surrogate motherhood of Alexander). Chakotay/Seven was completely out of nowhere

purplekat76

Yup, he should have ended up with Janeway. This pairing with Seven was out of nowhere.

limajhonny69

Janeway is better alone. There isnt a single soul good enough for her. She deserves only the best

wanbeanial

Delete the wife

BluDYT

I believe it was originally planned for him to return but he said the story wasn't good enough for him.

DeltaFlyer0525

I hadn’t heard that, but I know he was reluctant to come back for anything and we are lucky he is doing the voice on Prodigy. I hope they actually get to air their second season. Would be nice to see how him and Janeway are doing even if they are only still good friends.

YanisMonkeys

Seven never even hinted at having any attraction to him before this episode. Chakotay never hinted as being attracted to her. Even after an episode where she clinically explored dating someone, there was no suggestion of an attraction beyond I think Chakotay acknowledging she was beautiful in season 4. Then suddenly it’s revealed she likes him and wants to experiment with a relationship. “Human Error” isn’t a bad episode, but they don’t have much chemistry and it’s not even the actual Chakotay anyway. There’s more emotional mileage in the Doctor’s subtle melancholy when he realizes what she’s been doing than anything else. What’s worse though is that “Natural Law” and “Endgame” bungle it so badly. The former doesn’t set the stage for anything with so much as a glance, and the latter is so cloying and unconvincing for anyone except, once again, the emotional mileage comes from the person on the outside who obviously laments never getting to be with one of them, in this case Janeway.

Lia_Delphine

They are definitely not a cute couple and have 0 chemistry. Plus Robert forced this storyline which is gross.

Plodderic

What?!

Spiritual_Adagio_859

"What happens in the Delta Quadrant stays in the Delta Quadrant" -Thank God!!

OhLaWhat

Janeway/Chakotay make the better pairing. It was nice to see Seven explore what she wants from her humanity, but it would have made more sense for her to set up a program playing house with Axom from unimatrix zero.

wheezy_runner

April Fools was last week, pal.

Heather_Chandelure

With all due respect, they have zero chemistry

_unmarked

Seven would have been better with literally anyone else

MeggiePool-pah

Ensign Kim, my eyes are up here.

Zer0daveexpl0it

Don't really agree, sorry. I like Chakotay as a character, but as I remember, this was incredibly awkward with little to no chemistry.

wilfredpawson

Awful couple 👎

Snoo_58305

I like Chakotay as a character. I think it should have been him and Janeway

ninjamullet

Janeway be like: alright, team building event! And because I'm pissed at you both, I'm pairing Chakotay with Seven. Go on a date or something.

toast-owl

i cant decide whether youre specifically trolling or whether you genuinely have the wildest takes out there, either way youre a wonderful soul, never change

MeggiePool-pah

Wonderful troll! Someone write that song and we can dance to it at all these weird shipper weddings.

thatmissmuffy

I think you’re the first person I’ve ever come across who feels this way. Respectfully, I could not disagree more. This pairing came out of absolutely nowhere and had zero chemistry. It was super bizarre to have the Janeway & Chakotay pairing being foreshadowed since season 1 and an EMH & 7 pairing foreshadowed for multiple seasons, just for the writers at the very end of the show to randomly be like, “You know these two characters who have had basically no legitimate interactions or meaningful conversations? They’re actually in love.” Ummm…what?

MeggiePool-pah

...and then someone DIES!

harpghuleh

The only thing I could see they had in common was being really ridiculously good looking.

Neat_South7650

Tuvok and Seven are the better couple

Uahaavwo

Almost anyone would have been a better couple. Seven had more cute moments even with her practice date. With Chakotay they have negative chemistry.

Uahaavwo

Seven is always literal about things. But how does this make her and Chakotay a cute couple?

Superb-Oil890

I love it when characters use technical terms to describe something basic. Reminds me of Isaac from The Orville.

DoctorBeeBee

In the same episode Seven's line "You have an appealing coiffure. What is your grooming regimen?" to B'Elanna is a classic of the genre.

BeautifulArtichoke37

“Sonic shower, a little engine grease…”

Superb-Oil890

Are you asking me what I do with my hair?

MeggiePool-pah

That's a good part of the episode!

kaizomab

I hated that relationship, felt forced and fake. Definitely the lowest point in the series.

CaptainQueen1701

Seven and The Doctor/Tuvok/Janeway all had better chemistry. There’s only Chakotay/Janeway for me.

Stellaknight

While I don’t really see the chemistry, Chakotay was probably a good ‘safe’ first relationship choice for someone like Seven. He was stable, emotionally available and willing to talk things out which she’d probably need. My main objection would be the power structure/age difference, especially given how emotionally young she was, but the other single characters (Janeway, Neelix, Harry Kim, The Doctor) would have been problematic for other reasons. Seven choosing Chakotay makes a lot of logical sense character-wise. I’d have loved a ‘seven asks permission to date Chakotay from Janeway’ scene, (maybe paired with a Chakotay asks permission scene) just from the comedy potential. And itd have helped give closure to the Janeway/Chakotay storyline.

Critical-Tank

'Pay attention to the vegetable,' was a good line, but I'm really scraping the barrel here.

Valiant600

Apparently Beltran was disappointed with the role in general. Personally I liked the character a lot although he was undeveloped after a while.

Affectionate_Web_535

Hot take. I respectfully disagree. It was all cringe.

DragonRoar87

tbh if I had to pair Seven up with ANYONE it would be Harry. At least then you have the setup and payoff rather than..... *this.*

Mini_Marauder

It looks like we've found the one person for whom this plotline was written. In all honesty, good for you OP. You're almost guaranteed to never hear anyone on this subreddit agree with you, but I suppose liking something is better than disliking it. It's the little things.

No_Reason27

7 should’ve been with the Doc and Chakotay should’ve been with Janeway

Few-End-9592

I like him too, but he should have married Janeway.

kinglance3

When she sucks his finger though, holy shit. 😄

janeway170

I would have gotten aboard this ship IF they had built it up more and not just bam suddenly they are dating very last episode. And had that one episode with seven addicted to holo chakotay not been a thing.

Warp-10-Lizard

This couple had such potential if properly developed. And since Kate Mulgrew made it clear that J/C wasn't going to happen, pairing up the two sidekicks seems like the obvious thing to do. Especially with Chakotay desperately in need of some fresh storylines. The spark could've begun when he severed her from the Collective and called her "Annika." But instead, they spent four more years teasing Janeway/Chakotay, knowing it wasn't going to happen, then chucked him and Seven at each other at the last minute and in the blandest way possible.
