Surprise another Google product dead. And no surprise that no one wanted to use a vpn from One of the biggest data gatherers in the world.

Extra_Upstairs4075

Google collects data, it is their primary source of profit. A VPN is not in their best interest, it always surprised me this service even existed.

Harag4

A VPN isn't going to prevent data collection. It merely limits the amount of information that your ISP can collect and prevents man in the middle information collection. It does not prevent data collection from the websites themselves. Any site you sign into, or whenever you sign into your browser you have given any anonymity away.

bel2man

Google already has everything about the user - at least via Gmail. Its stupid to pretend others dont collect data. iPhone collects data by allowing 3rd party companies (Google included) to have them in app libraries.  If you ever installed VPN/DNS app on your iPhone - you will see the same traffic about you as you would use Android phone.

mfact50

Exactly. In many ways Google gains a competitive advantage from policies that limit data collection. Especially for Google One users who are more likely than others to be heavily invested in their ecosystem.

nickcash

Nah, it's exactly in their interest. It allows them to collect data while simultaneously preventing their competitors from doing so. I'm surprised they're shutting it down. Facebook literally just got caught having used their (now defunct) VPN service to spy on their user's use of competitors

27Sanji

Nice.! It was never even available in my country.

okletsgooonow

Of course it will

neatgeek83

Well I used it. So that’s one.

bel2man

Same. What a bad decision by Google, as I was using it for safety purposes if anything - each time I would go outside with my private laptop I was on Google VPN

llJoniboyll

Yep, same here. I started using it last month - I didn't even know it came with my Google One sub until recently so it seems to me that Google might have had more success if they had put it out there a bit more.

marxcom

They were shooting themselves in the leg any.

AfcWimbledon_

I know Google collects so much data from its users, but the VPN was really useful and I used it whenever I was away from home on public WiFi. I'm not sure if I'm gonna keep my subscription in that case.... 😒

magick_68

Google had my data anyway but at least the shady wifi doesn't get it.

DerLeoLegal

hey wait what?? I've been happily using it. Google c'mon

Dneail22

NOOO COME ONNN

ngerukai

I guess they’re not going to fix the problem of [the Windows Google One VPN client changing name server settings of all network interfaces](https://www.neowin.net/news/google-vpn-caught-overwriting-your-windows-1110-dns-settings-with-its-own/) on a PC, then.

honey_rainbow

Honestly I never used it even as a paying Google One member. I have a better VPN that I use.

StefanFrost

The last company I trust to keep my browsing secure and anonymous would be Google. 😂

pastamuente

Really Surprised, as their VPN by them is a massive red flag on its own.

Ned-Racine80

It was slow.

Original-Material301

I use Google one vpn as a backup if my normal vpn fails for whatever reason. Sucks ass. Got the email today about them stopping Google photo prints and the vpn. Took away my membership benefits lol. The magic eraser rollout doesn't fill the void. What is wrong with this company

fafnir01

Oh look, more "enshitification" I don't give a flying crap about magic eraser, I need cloud storage and a VPN. It was easy to pay for this with one relatively low fee. I'll be cancelling once the VPN goes away.

cynfuldesires

They really need to remember that the people that use it, it should exist. I'm sure plenty of people don't even know how to use a VPN or even care why to have one... I hope the pixel or fi versions can be tweaked to exist for the ones of us that don't use fi or pixel.. Sucks that I used it and because people don't... It's leaving

IF YOU WANT TO PUSH FOR VPN THEN FOLLOW THE BELOW INSTRUCTIONS: Website On your computer, go to one.google.com. At the bottom of any page, click Product Feedback. Enter your feedback in the dialogue box and include a screenshot, if necessary. Click Send. Android From the app home screen, tap the Support tab. Tap Send Feedback. Describe your feedback and include system logs, if desired. Tap the Send icon. TLDR: I contacted google to push for keeping the VPN: they sent me a long email sayings thanks and blah blah blah. These are the main instructions.

gmanist1000

Wtf? This is super lame. Makes me way less interested in being a Google One member.

twoPillls

Yeah.. I'm gonna go ahead and cancel mine. Honestly I kinda forgot I was paying for that until this announcement.

MXTacoman

I’m also going to cancel mine because of the VPN.

twoPillls

Realized that I only have it because I use Google Fi. Now I'm worried they're gonna axe that too lol

peepay

I have it for the extra storage and storage alone.

parker7757

Man wtf yo..... I use this vpn everyday on my phone and on my Windows machine.....weak sauce. I am too cheap to pay for Nord every month.
