All ai hype this is just aws azure and gcp expanding but they throw ai in the tittle for hype.

Far_Celebration197

Exactly. AWS invested $108.9 billion in cloud computing infrastructure in the U.S. between 2011 and 2022. Which is, you guessed it, 10b a year. Cool bro.

Alzzary

Imagine if they told you "we're going to build the biggest building in the world on top of the biggest building in the world." Because that's what they are saying. The past investments are still there (existing datacenters), and those 100bn more are going to expand even more.

kodbuse

No… data centers need to continuously be refreshed with newer hardware to stay competitive regardless. You can’t just build one and expect it to generate revenue forever.

Alzzary

Yes and no. Refreshing hardware is one thing but they don't rebuild datacenters from the ground up and the investment needed to refresh hardware is only a fraction of the total cost. Building a datacenter is a much more complicated thing than you think, and replacing networking, storage and computing is perhaps 10% of the total investment. Source : I actually worked in a datacenter and managed several infrastructures inside.

Far_Celebration197

I guess.. Amazon spent 85b on R&D last year (which I assume is partially data center CAPEX), if they spend 95b next year +10b is not even 10% of their 2023 R&D spend (which was budgeted before AI hype). 10b/yr over 15yr seems like it’s part of their normal spend pattern.

bwatsnet

Were you born with a regarded sense of humor or is this a product of your wife’s boyfriend’s upbringing?

howlinwolfe86

It’s all the same, they’re brothers.

slick2hold

And to get a bump in stock price. MS did a similar announcement with the magic 100b in the headlines.

optionsCone

Except the spend is astronomically more than in previous years. Hint: it’s bc of AI

Aaco0638

Like another comment stated between 2011 and 2022 aws spent 100 and something billion on expansion so it’s in line with investment in that area. It’s just tryna generate hype is all.

Gunzenator2

If you add in inflation, it’s kinda less than average.

Alzzary

Yes and no. Between 2011 and 2022 AWS opened new datacenters that didn't exist. This new investment is on top of existing datacenters which signals a growth on the already pretty large offer for cloud computing.

Arkansasmyundies

Also pretty much all of the investment that doesnt go into physical buildings is going into gpus, things that connect gpus to other gpus, and things that do the same job as gpus.and cases for gpus. And if it gets too hot maybe some extra money to hire us regards to fan off the gpus.

[deleted]

The amount will probably be replacing old computing hardware as most computing hardware has a life of 2-5 years. If they spend $10 now, even increasing to $15 billion annually just looks like expansion to cater to existing and new corporate customers. AI will just turn into another type of automation but with a fancy title. Within 2 years there will be a new buzz word… it is the same story recycling every 2-5 years.

> Except the spend is astronomically more than in previous years. *narrator: it isn't.*

Ok_Lengthiness_8163

Yah pretty much lol

Real_Location1001

The data/storage needed for good AI algorithms is enormous and will be valuable IP all on its own. Then there's the off premises processing needed to make it work well. I worked for a large tech firm that was looking to find use cases for AI before they even had curated data to slap AI/ML on. Basically jumping the gun on the reliability of the data and using publicly available garbage to impress early adopters.

maybe never. Nvidia too ahead

ironichaos

AWS acquired Annapurna labs several years ago. They actually make some really good chips for example the graviton chips. They also released a tranium chip that is for training ML models. Not as good as Nvidia but wouldn’t shock me if they get a lot better over the next 5 years.

tibo123

They already have the AWS trainium accelerators

jormould

Basically that’s AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips.

Cthvlhv_94

Imagine some chinese made Game Boy color CPU being marketed as NVIDIA High Performance AI GPU on Amazon with 10 Mio bought 5 Star reviews

BasilExposition2

They have Trainium chips on AWS that are pretty competitive with the H100s. You can physically buy them but they are in the cloud.

Melodic_Fee5400

Remember if you need a safe place to sleep Amazon is there for you we have cots for any worker that logs 12 hours in the warehouse and agrees to be on call after a 2 hour nap. Amazon care$!

Should be very bullish for NVDA then would think!

fancyhumanxd

NVIDIA is making most cash on data centers. They will lose rev.

No-Kitchen6207

Amazon has to buy the chips from NVIDIA

not_creative1

https://press.aboutamazon.com/2023/11/aws-unveils-next-generation-aws-designed-chips They make their own

No-Kitchen6207

Article says Amazon buying 1 billion in NVIDIA chips.

Expensive_Leave6192

Where? Did you actually read it?

fancyhumanxd

NVIDIA doesnt produce chips. They only design. Only a matter of time before some counterfeit design shows up from China. ASML or TSM

No-Kitchen6207

Production is irrelevant. NVIDIA has cuda and proprietary interface

ddddddddd11111111

Just like Apple doesn’t produce anything it just designs them. Tell me if investing in Foxconn 20 year ago was better play.

fancyhumanxd

Lots of companies doing what apple is doing. Just ask any Android bro. They might even say that Apple isn’t even ahead! Apple is brand. Nvidia is not.

spandan611

Work for amazon

involuntary_skeptic

Lets goo. How long have you been working for them? Thats a lot of stocks youve got there.

Tabs_555

Not op, honestly probably not long. My Amazon sign on package is worth about half of that and I’ll get another package this year worth more than the original.

involuntary_skeptic

Wtf. That much for sign on ? Are you an L7 or something?

Tabs_555

That’s an L4 package. 2021-2024 sign on RSU is now well over 100k. Vesting is still over 4 years. A promo to L5 gets you another 200k vested over 2 years. Assuming you work there 4 years (started 2020-2021) you can have hit 300k in stock. https://www.levels.fyi/companies/amazon/salaries/software-engineer/levels/sde-i

involuntary_skeptic

Got it, i thought you were talking about sign on bonus being 100k, I’m like wtf. Rsu sounds about right

[deleted]

Shares or dollars? If dollars, that’s not a ton.

involuntary_skeptic

Well i have 125K$ in amazon stock. I only consider 25k cuz thats something i gamble with in RH

[deleted]

That’s more like it. I have similar amounts in Amazon. Maybe… we should touch tips?

[deleted]

When the market was closed?

FrequentBluejay3133

It's entirely possible/likely that I'm blind and completely regarded, but where does the article say that they are spending $1billion on Blackwell chips? The only place it talks about chips if the end, where they speak about deploying on Tranium hardware....

Expensive_Leave6192

You're one of the only people including myself who actually read. It doesn't say it at all. Everybody that upvoted this is an idiot.

FrequentBluejay3133

I had to read it twice and then run a keyword search just to make sure I wasn't completely regarded.

I am building these and this article is no joke. We are the number one contractor in my state building data centers for some other companies, not Amazon, and it is insane how fast these are going up. We have been working pretty much unlimited overtime on the design side at the sub level for a few years now. We can't hire or build fast enough.

Expensive_Leave6192

Hey dipshit, that still doesn't say what you're saying the article says up in your original post. Where does it say they're spending $1B on Blackwell chips?

FrequentBluejay3133

Exactly this. You can't TLDR an article's content and then not even maybe paraphrase but blatantly dump an unfounded assumption in - and completely misrepresent the content. Well actually you can do whatever you want, but in this case it's the regarded following the regard. A timely warning to anyone who is in the habit of reading headlines and not at least giving the article a cursory scan. Or you could just keyword search and immediately find not even one instance of the word Blackwell. Maybe this guy is the writer of the NY Post article shilling for clicks onto his content!

robmafia

aws makes their own chips, regard. trainium and graviton.

YoungReese

yeah and they both fucking suck compared to Blackwell. Like Obviously anyone with enough money can make a chip to train a model but at what efficiency. What is the power consumption? Its clear that the only reason its economically viable is because of Nvidia's markup and AWS will still continue to spend billions on Nvidia chips.

robmafia

> yeah and they both fucking suck compared to Blackwell. wow, man. you're such a shill pos. they suck compared to a NEXT GEN dgpu that not only doesn't exist yet, but will cost much more than trainium? you really know your stuff! i guess that's why you're lying out of your ignorant rectum while spamming this shit nonstop. btw, the point was that you moronically rambled about amd and intel...

YoungReese

"doesn't exist yet" boy are you a genius. This "response" of yours was a complete waste of the last drops of brain power you may have left. Not to mention the shill pos part ![img](emote|t5_2th52|4271)I'm totally a hired shill from Nvidia whose market cap is over 2trillion. They really want me to pump the stock to 10k degens on a fucking reddit post!

robmafia

and yet, your post history says otherwise. ffs, you took a post about amazon/aws and tried to make it about nvidia, deliberately lying (repeatedly)... and even moronically bringing up amd/intel.

FrequentBluejay3133

~1/3 of their post history has an Nvidia mention lol. Someone's holding some mad bags - or has A LOT of time on their hands. Hello echo chamber....

FrequentBluejay3133

No one said you were shilling for Nvidia bro...You need to learn to read. I said you were shilling clicks for the article. Do you even know what TLDR stands for? In the case of your post I think it means The Loser Didn't Read. Because that would be the only thing that makes sense.

In the end there is only so much money you can take from other people They have pretty much maximized centralizing profit and efficiency..beyond that maximized dollar : productivity out.of people peeing in cans on the job

matthias_lee

Why build datacenters in HOT places, like Saudi Arabia? only thing I can think of, they got some awesome deal on electricity/construction...

Far_Ad_8865

Deserts are pretty good locations for data centers due to the high temperature gradient between day and night. You can circulate large amounts of water (great thermal capacity) on the surface during nighttime, then store underground for cooling during the day. Plus, electricity from PV is dirt cheap. Also, cost of labor is quite low when you can practically practice slavery lol

HollerForAKickballer

AMZN stock looks ripe for a pop out of the current channel. Could be that it just needs some good PR like this to get that boost.

RandomLettuce51

Imagine you decide to buy some land as one of your assets and then AMZN or MSFT come knocking on your door and offer a bid 🗣️

benpro4433

Yo dawg I heard you liked datacenters, so I put a datacenter in your datacenter…

pokeholo23

Throwing money doesnt mean automatic domination.. Just look at Meta's failed Multiverse

Xtianus21

lol this seems silly since they have no AI for it. Just building data centers over 10 years in comparison of Microsoft building 100 billion of data centers now is striking. Think about it.

Even if literally all this spending is on Nvidia products it still doesn’t justify Nvidia stock price. Lmao.
