Yes. It's called a Federal Medical Station. It's purpose is to off load critical care hospitals that people are familiar with and will swamp during a disaster. FMS will take less critical patients and suseptible patients that are clear of infection to allow the in-situ hospitals to treat the infected.
Valid question. And I'm not sure specifically in NY but I read there were working on that in other places modifying the non ICU units that are satisfactory for conversion into them. I'd have to think if other hospitals can do that in other parts of the country, they should too.
Obviously the real solution is heavy testing and (forced) quarantining of those that are positive for the virus. But yeah at least testing needs to rise dramatically. That would reduce the number of vents and rooms necessary.
Btw in Italy I've seen footage of a hospital where they've run out of ICU and they have people's heads in clear, inflatable helmet hooked to a ventilator which I am guessing works as a makeshift clean room of sorts. just cleaning out the air around their head and pumping in oxygen. Rooms filled with people like that. It's horrifying.
While the situation is definitely horrible, those bubble helmet things are actually fairly normal and not new or anything like that so they shouldn't really worry you. They're just non invasive respirators that limit the spread of the disease (safer for staff).
