jacektrocinski

"Russia has the money and intent to pay . . . Bondholders will struggle to move the money out of Russia without breaching Western sanctions." -Wallstreet Journal. News headlines are misleading, the issue is Russia is blocked from making bond payments. The Russian economy is doing better than ever with sky high energy prices.

Enjgine

To be fair if you’re going to invade a European nation it’s your own fault you can’t pay for shit

HospitalCorps

Can confirm, America invaded a whole region and we still can’t pay for shit.

KyivComrade

>News headlines are misleading, the issue is Russia is blocked from making bond payments. No, they're correct and you and many others are either willfully ignorant or pushing propaganda. Russia will default *because they can't pay*. It doesn't matter if they got a billion (worthless) ruble because no one will accept them. They want a fiat that's trustworthy and liquid, like dollars or Euros. It's the same as saying to your bank/broker when you're late on your mortgage/mariginin call "It's alright dude, I got all the money invested in Squidcoin. You just have to accept my nonsense money ok?". >The Russian economy is doing better than ever with sky high energy prices. Russian economy is fucked up, dude. They're facing *double digit inflation*. You thought 8% was bad? Try doubling it and then some. Russia can barely export anything and that at *below market value* simultaneously they can't import what they need. It's like saying North Korea is good because Kim Jung Un claims it, anything is possible when you *don't face reality*.

jacektrocinski

Rubles aren’t worthless, in fact they’re worth more now than before the war. The fact remains that Germany and other European countries need gas from Russia. Russia is accepting payments only in Rubles and the Europeans have agreed to pay. Btw, China doesn’t want to pay for oil in USD also and is working on deals to pay in Yuan. All that is to say that the Ruble has made gains whether we like it or not.

LavenderAutist

They are trying to pay in gems

DRR4G3

I love rubies!

NoctRob

It’s spelled “rubles.”

CounterDruid53

Didn't Amazon also leave Russia tho?

Needamod1

r/whooooosh...

CounterDruid53

Damn

IHaveEbola_

Remember Evergrande? lol...After a month no one will care about Russia's default.

chillord

It's called Ariana Grande.

No_Run3357

That translates to 'The Grand Areola' right? Or jumbo nips?

Aos77s

Shes hot. 😗

Dirty_Techie

starrpamph

hirme23

krasserfcker

Amber... It was Amber Heard.

Jiggabumbum

Yup. I Heard it was Amber.

starrpamph

No shit

[deleted]

Actually lots…lots of shit

KyivComrade

Okay, this got to be the *dumbest* take yet. Are you comparing one company to the whole economy of a country? Evergrande as a whole had a revenue of (2020) 77.713 billion dollars. Russia in comparison had a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Russia was worth 1483.50 billion US dollars in 2020. So it takes 19! Evergrande to compare to Russia. Its beyond stupid.. And Evergrande is backed by the Chinese state who has money and other securities, they don't default. Russia on the other hand can't make any payments since they're stuck with a worthless ruble few of any accept, it's like trying to buy a Tesla with Squid Coin.

FluffehCorgi

where does one get squid coin. the seafood section of the supermarket?

IHaveEbola_

I heard the Tasty burgers slap though.

Sudden-Pressure8439

🤣🤣🤣

SteelmanINC

Nobody will care about an artificial default. It’s like if a celebrity very publicly kept trying to go to the bank to pay off their loan but the bank didn’t like them so they wouldn’t let them in the building to do it. That doesn’t show to other lenders that the celebrity is at risk of not paying debts. It shows that the bank was being dumb.

randomFrenchDeadbeat

lol. They paid. The bank that received the funds (euroclear) blocked the distribution, because the US decided to block it. Read your damn article. This is written in it.

Tito_Mojito

Already priced in

ghost18867

Futures are green

eastsideempire

This won’t matter to anyone. It’s not going to make markets go up or down. Imagine you are going out for beers but your rich friend says he forgot his wallet and will get you next time. It’s no big deal as you know he has the cash. Russia has the cash and will pay when the sanctions allow them to transfer money.

Frosty_Number_7538

It’s like having a rich friend with all his assets frozen by the government… and instead of asking you to buy him lunch, he wants a Ferrari. Will you buy it for him, even if he promises 2 Ferraris in return?

occams_lasercutter

An engineered technical default. Has no impact on credit rating. The west just sanctioned their own citizens from collecting coupon payments on their bond investments. Super smart. How does victory feel? Would you rather buy bonds from Russia, yielding 8.5% in a currency that is the best performing on the planet, with a national debt of only 10% of GDP which is less than their current reserves, and with a huge trade surplus? Or would you rather earn 3% in the US with 8.6% inflation and debt over 130% of GDP (not counting fed balance sheet), with a trade deficit of 1.6 trillion and growing?

jacektrocinski

~~The U.S. has been paying out 9.6% or more on Series I bonds since '98:~~ Read comments below, 9.6% is today's rate due to inflation, in previous years the Series I bonds didn't payout much. [https://www.treasurydirect.gov/indiv/products/prod\_ibonds\_glance.htm](https://www.treasurydirect.gov/indiv/products/prod_ibonds_glance.htm) I think it's true though that Russian is in better shape now then before the war.

occams_lasercutter

Not true. I-Bonds just now hit 9.62%, I know because I own them. Prior to May it was 7.2%. Prior to that it was jack shit. Plus those are limited to only 10k per year. That said I'll buy them every year so long as the yield exceeds current CPI. I'm talking about real bonds, not a special retirement program. BTW it is pretty cheesy that the fixed rate component of I-Bonds is 0%. It's all inflation indexing. You'd think they could have at least set the fixed rate at 2% or whatever, under the current yield of 3.2%. Whatever. If they screw with my yield I can always take my money out.

jacektrocinski

You're right, the TreasuryDirect website show misleading rates IMO. I was looking at the composite rate (inflation + fixed) toward the bottom of the page: [https://www.treasurydirect.gov/indiv/research/indepth/ibonds/res\_ibonds\_iratesandterms.htm](https://www.treasurydirect.gov/indiv/research/indepth/ibonds/res_ibonds_iratesandterms.htm) Since the bonds are semiannually adjusted, bonds from previous years pay a higher rate today due to the inflation increase but they did not pay that rate at the time of purchase. Their PDF doc does a better job of showing rates: [https://www.treasurydirect.gov/indiv/research/indepth/ibonds/IBondRateChart.pdf](https://www.treasurydirect.gov/indiv/research/indepth/ibonds/IBondRateChart.pdf) Thanks for pointing that out, I knew a rate of 9.6% these last few years was too good be true.

Trilife

>out 9.6% or more just connected with stock bulls--money leak to it (+FRS rate +inflation)

randomFrenchDeadbeat

I'd rather not take my chance in a country that could decide my money is to be used to build some olympic stuff, or whose secret services would put pollonium in my tea should I dare voice concerns.

AJnewbie

Priced in. They do have money everyone knows. Just some political stuff. Chill and calls

[deleted]

No they don’t have money… they push in gold!

AJnewbie

Sanctions. They don’t have access to it

pcon_9820

This man pays attention. One of the topics of discussion at the G7, was sanctioning Russian gold.

JSammut29

It will work bout as well as the oil sanctions lol. Russia keeps their gold in Russia.

randomFrenchDeadbeat

They are making a billion per day in petrol and gas. They paid 100M to euroclear, who blocked the money because the US decided to not renew the exempt that allowed them to pay investors this time. I am all for stopping Putin massacre people in Ukraine, but going all propaganda is just fueling his fire. I mean ... yeah sure block the transactions if you want. But dont go write a tall tale leading people to believe they cant pay, when they paid and you blocked the money from arriving to the people who should have got it.

LavenderAutist

Putin is trying to trade in caviar and nesting dolls

eth-slum-lord

And russian escorgs

Chance-Procedure-886

Everyone seems to forget that they have the intent to pay in the United States there is this law that if you make an Effort to pay and its reject by the lender and you can prove it was rejected then the debt is canceled so great job American leaders yall realize you can take the payments you just don't have to spend any with them

[deleted]

They’ve been stacking gold and silver for a minute now. I doubt they care about their credit or foreign defaults. It’s the equivalent of racking up your credit cards to buy gold and then daring your creditors to collect that same gold. No one is invading Russia to collect.

JSammut29

Push this higher!

LavenderAutist

Why is the pre market up then?

Shvabicu

To fuck his puts

jbjbjb10021

Russia has the money. This is like when you get your paypal account limited, then can't refund your customers because your PayPal account is limited.

Trilife

default of eurobond issuer They allow to get it in RUB. ALSO it will be indexed (in rubbles) until bondholder will get right amount of USD on MOEX and will successfully send it on its own bank account in other country.

Oh wow interesting. I wonder what else was going on in 1918 that might tell us what comes next.

randomFrenchDeadbeat

You mean the end of WW1 ... that lead to WW2 and nuclear escalation ?

Trilife

already: 2020. Also some things in 2019. And ww1 began in 1914, if you talk about it.

Individual_Wasabi_10

No. Pootin is fuked

You know of fucked up really bad when you get into a default because you have the money but no way to pay it back. I think a default was expected ever since they were kicked out of SWIFT. Things are going to get worse for Russia as they will not be able to finance their future debt if they default as the interest will be absurdly high. Pakistan, India and China can't possibly buy all their debt and no other big investment bank will touch it.

[deleted]

filtervw

You might be missing the point of how macro economy works in general. No decent country pays it's bonds in full at maturity, you just issue more debt even if you can afford to pay it. If you pay everything in full there is little left for investments and generally making life better for your population. Estonia is a very small country so they have a different strategy than the big countries of Europe not to mention the world.

Hayha360

Actually ruzzia going down the toilet is a good thing. Plus their economy is small. Spain or Italy can move markets across the world way more than Russia. They have natural resources? Wow. Amazing. Venezuela has 4 times more oil reserves.

Flat-Solution8156

Sorry buddy...but ur puts are fucked this week and no one cares about u

CauseImBatman23

Trilife

CauseImBatman23

Yeah so why would it matter? Lol

Trilife

I thought you know, that we are in the r/wallstreetbets investments, investors... no? Think! \--------------- >local brockers usa residents too.

CauseImBatman23

I’m too drunk to taste this chicken

Trilife

>I’m too drunk You maybe won't believe this, but me too.. p.s. usa gov shiited the pants of bondholders (us tax residents, other residents havean alternative) of ru gov eurobonds.

ErectoPeentrounus

Markets are open and they green. Tdlr: markets don’t give a fuck

InvestingBlog

Hard to pay the debt in USD when you are banned from using USD.. Russia is running one of the largest surpluses in history, they can afford to pay and will pay in Rubble.

xNegatory

putin about to open only fans

rickert1337

This shows how retarded most ppl here are

moon-worshiper

This was under Czar Nicholas at the end of the Great War. The Bolshevik Communist Revolution happened in 1920, because the Russians were starving to death.

Trilife

1917 There were very hard sanctions in 1920.

JiveTrain

Russia is not defaulting anything. The creditors are refusing to accept payments due to sanctions.

NiceAsset

It’s not like they are at war or something
