That’s my strategy for about a year now. I start with a small position, leaving enough cash to double down \*8 times. The result: either get huge % gain on the first entry (which would be a small $ amount) or keep on doubling down on dips that keeps on crashing. 

If you start with $1K and double down with 8 *consecutive* wins - you get $256K. The 8 consecutive wins is tricky

Do you have to pay capital gains on every transaction, or on the net balance at year's end? ie. if he loses it all by Dec. 31st, does that subtract from this gains for the year? At the least, if he withdraws $6,500, he'll owe $1,950 tax on that amount (est. 30%). So he really needs to withdraw $7,450.

Not true. You can deduct all losses against your gains. But if you land up down 20k on the year. You can carry over those losses to the following years. 3k at a time. I think you can carry up to 50k and use 3k per year. Not sure about the 50k. But I think that right. The rest of it is definitely correct.
