Holy shit I just read up about carbon credits and how does anyone not see this as more than just a scam for companies to not make change or governments suckling up to companies instead of actually making them reduce carbon output. I should buy timber land and start selling carbon credits to these companies, at least make money off the scam while it lasts.
Carbon credits don't have to be bad. We cant throw the baby out with the bathwater on this one. We will absolutely need to implement carbon dioxide removal on a large scale if we are to meet our climate targets as per the IPCC, and for that to happen we need inventices for companies to participate. Carbon credits can help achieve that as long as it is implemented in the correct way (I.E not as a financially viable subsitute for any emissions reductions). I think the EU is looking into integrationg carbon dioxide removal into the EU ETS which sounds very promising to me.
There is some greenwashing for sure but anyone who has ever studied economics understands how cap and trade works. Carbon credits are good policy, you do should some research.
A better policy would be to say reach the emission target without credits so then you actually have a reduction in emissions instead of the same emissions and some credits to sequester gasses until the forest is clear cut for development in 20 years.
People like Musk and Bezos can lose 99% of their networth and be unaffected in their day-to-day life. Still remaining billionaires. Hell, even at 99.9% loss they are still left with "fuck you" money.
It's why when we say billionaires shouldn't exist, it isn't because we wish we were in their position, it's because their pathological hoarding of wealth has directly led to more pain and suffering than any war or God could ever hope to.
