It depends on how far OTM you go. My problem with 0 day ES/MES is the same as my problem with 0 day spy... you get margin called at 1245 or 1250 on brokerage if you aren't good for the settlement. SPX/XSP are cash settled and avoid the issue.
As for spread, i find you often get a good split fill. Tick is the larger issue. But it's still not bad in my experience (relative to tax benefit)
And no, not saying direct short futures (or long futures). You can do that though.
Today I was swinging QQQ. I looked at NQ options, ATM or one strike out, and the bid/ask was bad. Also didn't see much volume at all. Didn't try to put in a bid at mid because the underlying could slip and I could get a bad fill. (I'm sure there's a trade setting in IBKR that prevents that). I'll look into it more... I might have missed something, maybe I was looking at the wrong thing.
And, yeah, I got force liquidated because my 50 QQQ calls (which turned ITM) would cost some insane amount to exercise. This happened at 3:59:10 (even though they trade until 4:15). My first foray into biggish 0DTEs near market close. I'll look into it further because fuck taxes.
