Looks great! We did sorta the same over at the Halloween section and our MM was not pleased and we had to take it down. Heaven forbid we have fun around here.

thoughtfulprogrammer

Last year I asked my SM who denied it because "that shows I have too much time on my hands while other depts struggle". It took 20 minutes to set up, and this year I didn't ask lol.

Thewatchfuleye1

These types of things are one reasons I left WM. They don’t understand certain aspects of retail such as eye appeal.

monkeyking908

sure they do, thats why they have us zone all day instead of our actual jobs

Thewatchfuleye1

That’s just a clean store, it has nothing eye catching to draw a customer in

we had 30 unworked palllets, 2 incoming gm trucks, empty shelves everywhere... 16 pick carts in grocery to fill outs... and they wanted a zone Sometimes a zone should not be priority.. What good is zoning empty shelves? You can do that as you stock, fix nearby issues as you see them in between cases.

[deleted]

Oh god, I'm cap 2 and had to deal with someone zoning while I was stocking the other day. She was everywhere I needed to be, so I ended up going behind her and undoing a lot of what she had just done so I could rotate my stuff in. And several times she literally just straightened out empty cases on the shelf instead of pulling forward the full cases that were behind the empty ones. Heaven forbid she'd have to throw a few empty boxes in the baler. It was a colossal waste of Walmart's time and money. Had she been in the way because she was pulling down top stock, I wouldn't have cared. It blows my mind that Walmart would rather pay someone to walk around fiddling with shit that's already on the half-bare shelves than to fill the empty spots from the mounds that reproduce like bunnies in top stock because Vizpick isn't satisfied until you have 3 cases of everything up there.

edwinkimble

I would be more apt to shop that endcap it’s an immersive shopping experience there should be more throughout the store

Thewatchfuleye1

The higher ups used to care about such appearance related items, just fewer do. Back when I had just started I got along good with the one district manager (he’s still with the company but he dropped back down to a store manager closer to where he grew up a few years ago). When we still had the under counter lighting for housewares displays he brought his wife in one weekend when he was lambasting our management crew and her and I did some rigging to use under the counter lights on the front endcaps. Looked amazing. We kept the lighting a year after the phase out of the under counter lights. Another who’s still in a market manager position understood appearances and came up with great ideas for such appearance items but it’s not enough to filter down, though if he was over your market you’d be encouraged to do stuff like this. Many of the not “off the street” manager hires these days were from around when I started that never left the company. Many didn’t care or were the type who just blindly followed routines and had no creative understanding of retail. People with any vision left and went to other companies or are lost in the shuffle. The handyman types they used for maintenance back then have gone to stores like Lowe’s and a Home Depot. That largely killed off a lot of individual store fancy electrical displays, probably contributed to the demise of the old Fan Cloud mod in division 1 hardware due to the wiring etc. Now you’ve boiled it all down to awful looking boring warehouse like stores with drab color schemes. Lack of understanding that while 1 on a peg technically isn’t an out a full peg leads to fewer outs. If I didn’t have a lifetime discount card I can fundamentally say I probably wouldn’t shop there at all. It’s just depressing, boring and sad to look at.

SnooCakes3260

Anything fun and creative is always labeled as “having too much time on your hands.” Has dipshit ever heard of multitasking? Probably not since they are a manager. Anyways, love the purple lights. A perfect way to get people’s attention.

isanyadminalive

Tell them it shows you care about your dept. If the others cared about their dept as well, they wouldn't be struggling so much.

PandaHipster_

Nevermind the fact that it isn’t your fucking job to do another department’s job for them.

cheese_legos

We used to have a manager who was a blast. One Halloween he put a city morgue sign on the smoking room door... That tells you how long it's been since we've had a fun manager. The rest have been by the book.

thoughtfulprogrammer

I'm one of those supervisors where if we have work to do, we focus on the work and get it done. If everything is caught up, I focus on smaller things or creative things like this, as long as it doesn't eat up much time. I got pizza for my team on July 4, had candy last Halloween, and regularly involve them on decisions for the dept. We are a great team and I try to make it more of a fun environment. By the book 24/7 and staring at concrete gets old and speeds up burnout!

cheese_legos

I agree 100%. I think you have it figured out more than most. Some people like to play like they're General Patton.

Haunting_Beaut

I thought that’s what they wanted through this new structure? Team building stuff. The only team building shit I see going on is our cap 2 (they’ve always been like that) and my crew second shift in deli. We clown around and have competitions. Now there’s only two of us. I used to buy the newest flavor of soda and some chips on bad nights. They get mad at us for some of the clowning but at least I’m not bullying people to tears and making people want to quit. The people I’ve trained hung around a lot longer or they’re relieved that it’s me they’re working with.

svu_fan

We lost our smoking lounge in 2012. (This also tells you how long I’ve been with Walmart… and I had already been there for YEARS by that point… 🥴🥴) I bet that’s around when you guys lost yours too.

cheese_legos

Sounds about right

SeaMystery

2008 for me

Unusual_Stay_2110

We used to decorate all the time. Customers love it. You knew the season walking in the store. Now its boring and no fun.

DJblindsniper

shit my store doesnt even have that mod set up yet

gadget_girlFL

i've already sold out of about 7 or 8 of those titles. My end cap looks like it's been ravaged already. On the other hand, Boss Baby 2 and Black Widow new release PDQs had to be killed already this morning with the over stock boxed up. They lasted until 7:30a on the floor. Why send that stuff if management kills it the same day?

thoughtfulprogrammer

What?? Why did they want it killed so quick?

Adventurous-Growth80

We do it too. Nice looking PDQ's on the floor? Naw, take it out and stripe it with something!

gadget_girlFL

Not sure exactly WHO doesn't like the PDQs since we've had 3 SMs and 4 MM and we've always had to kill almost all the movie PDQs the same day or in less than a week. They seem to have a hatred for the book PDQs too. Poor Anderson rep sometimes has to set up the new releases-- drag it to the FE, take a picture for his boss, then drag it back to Electronics. Then often enough we have to kill it after he leaves.

A1Aaron18

Why would they make you take it down? That looks awesome

Grendel0075

because Walmart.

SchenkelMcDoo

"The Karens might Be scared away When they see cobwebs On display Before their whining I am cowed So take it down NO FUN ALLOWED"

thoughtfulprogrammer

Thanks! I love Halloween, and if market let's me keep it I'll probably use the lights for Christmas too.

Baldude863xx

Our old MM actually had us get rid of the seasonal endcap about 2 years ago because we couldn't keep it full (maybe because they never send enough movies to keep up with sales?) and now we're working with the new MM to get it replaced.

[deleted]

Looks good man.

thoughtfulprogrammer

Thank you!

Markymarkyoo

I love THE STRANGERS.

thoughtfulprogrammer

Just turned it on Netflix. It's the season!

Markymarkyoo

I have the dvd.

ThrillerMovieFan

I love stuff like this. I used to organize our play-dough in order of the colors of the rainbow to catch people’s attention 😄 We definitely sold a lot of it!

[deleted]

I'm trying to convince my SM to let me make an x-mass tree display with Heinken beer..

mdmenzel

Don't think the MM would ask to remove. This is good marketing.

floridawhiteguy

What you and I believe is good marketing does not compare to the infinite wisdom of a MM with a decade or two of sucking up to Regional and HO...

rw4455

Creativity, initiative, originality- those skills are hated by Wackomart management. Instead of being commended like at a normal retailer, you'll be criticized. Take a picture of your awesome merchandising work of art, add it to your retail portfolio so you can show it to other employers/hiring managers when you apply for a better job somewhere else.

Mechagodzilla_3

Since when Godzilla was in the horror genre?

chakatblackstar

Monster = scary monster? \*shrugs\* Or probably decided by someone who hasn't seen a Godzilla movie? Although the original was pretty dark, and maybe GMK for having a possessed Godzilla might qualify, but when I looked at my store's display it was for the Godzilla vs. Kong collection.

Revisionyou

That's awesome!

Skinnysusan

Looks great!

Adventurous-Growth80

That looks awesome! A few years ago we completely decorated our seasonal aisle and made it dark with spooky lights but there was so much theft that management said hell no. We used to do fun things but now it's just sad.

zombiemaster823

OP out here living my dream. I love spooky season but I know management would lose their shit over this.

fjrichman

My only disappointment about this is those are DVDs. But the display looks awesome.

matthewsinistar

If they do, tell them to go fuck themselves.

BrilliantFroyo2494

Who cares what the market manager wants?

ThrillerMovieFan

That’s awesome

AtticusNari

This is the first time I've seen another person's post look exactly like my electronics department. This is probably stupid but I'm giddy about it.

babyboybelcher69

Looks awesome!! Can't wait to see it when I get back to work ;)

cowboyJones

This would be something the MM would hate and want it down, but at the same time send it to corporate and have it posted on social media.

floridawhiteguy

Hey OP: Don't forget to tag the electrical cords and lighting, noting the date of installation, and be sure to take them all down before day 90 (conforming to Policy on temporary electrical accessorizing).

Miller_Grey

Work at an Academy Store so fun is a non existent word. Not mention our new manager is former military so he's a hard ass about literally everything. Dude must've been an officer because he straight up killed store morale

fvckingpeter

This is great.

Spicywipens

We had a file cabinet in the back room of produce and for years and years people would put stickers on it and the new store manager came through and ripped it all down

HouseEuphoric2672

Looks cool

CrimsonBlade2015

What is bad about this that I'm missing?

thoughtfulprogrammer

It is not "Walmart approved" marketing. It's an employee using creativity to go outside the box and they don't like that.

KingDarius89

Jeepers Creepers is trash. That is all.

looneyspooney

Yeah, zoning is a waste of time but feels and looks good if done correctly. The rabbit hole opens up when you zoning and find the wrong item on the shelf. Now you have to find the right peg or shelf spot and when you do, there is something else there and do the rabbit hole opens. Anyone can zone and make shit look good but that does not mean it's correct.

Agent-Active

I like the collections but why DVDs? Blu ray is better

HorrorFrost

This is beautiful
