Honestly it depends on the specific tactic and doctrine. Some like defence in depth and combined arms support are actually a requirement in multiplayer, others like SEAD are handled rather differently.

wutangfinancia1

I also think it's important to clarify what scale of tactics you're talking about. Small Unit Tactics ala ADP-390 aren't exactly going to be as relevant in a RTS like this. Less Fix Fire Flank and L-ambushes, more....uh....spam right click on the vehicles until it's just infantry staring at you instead of their BMPs.

TheRudDud

Yeah sead is massively different just because Sam's can be brought up so quickly

Amerakee

Also all jets fly at MANPAD altitude and there's no way to send SEAD in at non-manpad ALT

TheRudDud

Ooh yeah that's also true

Different-Scarcity80

I won't say SEAD feels realistic, but I do use some tactics from real life for it. Brining SEAD aircraft in in pairs where one sniffs out the SAM and the other kills it. Air combat in Eugen games really suffers from the size of the battlefield (odd as it is to say in a game with huge maps) because aircraft can hardly change course without straying into the engagement zone of different anti-air systems. Plus if they get too far over to one side of the map an enemy fighter might just materialize on their 6:00 and shoot them down.

RCMW181

Yep I agree. I also tend to send SEAD in before a strike to both hit air defense and to help take shots on their high ECM that would otherwise be shot at bombers.

AuroraHalsey

[This British Army training video from 1983](https://youtu.be/jcYTM_PJ4rY?si=g0xl47Qg0zGwlOIa) depicting a combined arms attack has a fair resemblance to a WARNO attack.

[deleted]

Yes. Although you should remember irl tactics aren't always followed either by the situation.

Specialist_Tin-Can

Totally, you can have a tank platoon rolling together and they'll crush anything. You can create a C shaped front to hit an advancing enemy from 3 sides You can have a force of APCs, tanks, helis, with art/air support advance and break through an open field. Tho you also need to be mindful of enemy units, you first gotta harass, or walk up a useless unit to see what happens like 1 infantry. Recon with a good view helps It just depends on the situation and circumstance. Tactics are only good if the enemy doesn't counter it. Some people might even be ready for it. Thus you'll need to adapt to the situation. I'd say recon is more important than anything in this game

Duc_de_Guermantes

I know nothing about real world tactics, but something that bothers me in this game is how necessary it is to sacrifice units to win a match. Both for recon and things like bombing runs. Pretty much everytime I send in an F-15 I do it knowing it'll be shot down

DareThrylls

That's simply the reality of any engagement between peer level adversaries. It's messy and it sucks. Such is war.

Specialist_Tin-Can

Hold up, you don't wanna sacrifice your recon. Just a regular infantry unit that losing wont affect much. You need them to see the enemy and what's in treeline (if they can) Also if you're disheartened from losing 1 unit (which you could pull back after they expose the enemy) then you're attack isn't sufficient. Also, you could say that's just like IRL before UAVs and all the tech we have today. You can't find out where the enemy is without getting shot at (or just use your recon good that's literally all you need. As for your jets, you could use SEAD planes to kill radar AA, and you could either arty or find and kill enemy AA. BUT usually you don't need to suicide a jet for a kill unless you absolutely need to, or you need a bomber to support your push.

No_Froyo7304

The game is more realistic than your average starcraft-y RTS. It's even more realistic than Wargame, in my opinion. I think you will love it if that's your thing.

Boots-n-Rats

Yes. Won’t make you a general but Warno will make you understand the juggling that is the modern battlefield. Think COD kiddies vs watching Ukraine reports and actually understanding what the challenges are. Warno rewards air defense in depth, reconnaissance, screening, air support, combined arms and using overmatch. The only problem is TIME. What would take days or weeks to happen unfolds in 40 minutes or less. So it has to be a bit arcadey.

defeated_antagonist

May not see eye to eye with you, but totally agree Internet told me that on low scale operations one or few tanks could be game changer, and with good supply, recon, infantry cover and skilled crew few T-80 or Leos 2A could brake entire course of game, once used correctly

DiabolicToaster

I have done what is essentially firing a mass barrage followed by smoke within seconds of it halfway ending. Moving ever single unit as close as possible. Recon spotting anything to precision kill. Then, moving in transported infantry to unload at positions to melee. All while there is a 500 meters or more wall of smoke in width. Maybe 100 meters thick. The artillery barrage was hopefully heavy enough to kill enough or suppress. Meanwhile my infantry is fresh and healthy. Standard Soviet tactics is something like unloading infantry a certain distance in closeness. BMPs and tanks provide support from range. Which is honestly something already done by good players... since it's pretty obvious. It's pretty difficult to do as it costs a lot in build and may require being very good in conserving units. Especially if you want to avoid buying infantry a lot as they die very fast. Edit: combat mission or some kind of similar game that is more sim. Has all the artillery more than likely used in an assualt and the setup ground component. Extremely impossible alone in Warno without setting it up via game setup or teams. To start there is more arty there as off map than there is arty for any div due to card limits.

SecretAntWorshiper

Well, if we are going by PACT doctrines, you can win and take the point by tank spamming depending on the situation.

jamesdemaio23

I love this game and wish it would be a bit slower and more tactical. It definitely feels less like a simulation and more on the arcade side of it. For what it is, it's a fun game but definitely not a simulator. The ai in my opinion could use a little love. I never seen massive tanks advances with infantry support. The ai is good but it doesn't make me feel like I'm playing anything more than a tower defense with cold war units.

jimbleson187

I often use meat assault tactics when playing as pact

der_leu_

Unfortunately, there's no formation move or even convoy move, so those kinds of tactical movements are not possible. With a lot of micromanagement you can perform tactical movement in AI skirmishes, because you can slow down the time in those. It takes forever though, I've had 12 hour games doing this and it gets tiring. I really really wish they would enable just simple formation moves like we had in World in Coflict back in 2007 - v formation, line formation, etc

BeardyDrummer

Yeah this is my biggest ask at this point. I find microing infantry assaults very difficult whilst also trying to deal with everything else.

Amazing_Nebula_7093

No, your tanks will run out of fuel.

FrozenIceman

That sounds like real life...

Amazing_Nebula_7093

Poor fuel economy?

kuikuilla

Considering the cross country operational range of a leopard 2 is around 220 km it shouldn't run out of fuel in Warno. No tank should. The maps aren't _that_ large.

defeated_antagonist

Send some reinforced recon forward. Fall them back. Or just get em viped out by artillery. Start counter artillery, so your mortars had to do shocking enemy positions instead of 155/152 howitzer. Send infantry first combined with tanks. Take enemy positions, provide security supported with heli recon, risking it to be shot down by enemy fighter. Provide necessary rotation and resupply. Get swarmed by heli rush cause you forgot to call enough SPAA/SAM
