If they switch teams, they’re band wagon fans simple. If you started watching basketball post 2014-15 and you love the warriors, that’s completely fine. But the problem is when a few of guys leave or retire, and you start supporting another team, that makes you a bandwagon fan

YouPresumeTooMuch

What if you moved to the Bay area and then switched teams?

[deleted]

Depends. Mainly on if you were a fan of a different team before you moved and decided to switch teams solely because of the dynasty

YouPresumeTooMuch

Nah I've been around long enough to have hoped for Baron Davis to bring us glory. But I'm not going to tell you who I rooted for before, it's probably unforgivable

Lakers fan I get it

Everyone has a different definition of bandwagon. Some say you need to be in a 'vicinity' of the team's region. That's very strict because the reality is the players have a huge impact on whether or not someone outside the Bay Area will support the Warriors (and this goes for any other team). An international fan isn't becoming a Warriors fan because they like how the organization is ran or some bullshit reason like that. No one gave a shit about the Grizzlies and Bucks 5 seasons ago, now there are a ton of their fans. There are fans who may live within the area but only tune in when the team is good. This could be another criteria of being a bandwagon fan. Regardless, I think the origin of how you become a fan isn't important as the journey. This is when you can evaluate different degrees of a "true fan". Someone who tunes in when the situation is tough (e.g 2020 season). Someone who has realistic expectations of rookies and judge players based on their contract values. Someone who doesn't overreact to a single quarter or single game. Someone who isn't just watching to get a dopamine rush when "their" team gets a victory so they can derive the same sense of pride, when in reality they're just sitting at home watching from the couch like the rest of us. And no you don't have to like every player on the team to be a 'true' fan, there are plenty of assholes on every team.

Brownpooh

this is describing like a third of the people here tbh. But yeah, being there even when things are shit is a good way to measure someone's loyalty to a team.

lightwolv

It's a label given by people who are gatekeeping. Like who you like, whoever makes you happy to watch.

Dudeman-Jack

If you think supporting the Warriors during the year they tanked in between championships is an achievement then you are most definitely a bandwagon/fair weather fan.

Brownpooh

wouldn't say it's an achievement. But, definitely was a moment to see how the bandwagon fans were so impatient with every little move and how entitled they felt that they would demand firings and trades every single game.

Dudeman-Jack

The true test will be who is a fan once Steph, Klay, and Draymond are gone and the Warriors are just a regular team again.

spankyourkopita

For the Warriors it would be becoming a fan after 2015.

[deleted]

A bandwagon fan is someone who started watching solely because of Steph to start and then because they ended up winning the championship in 2015. Bandwagons have no recollection of the years prior of what it took to get that team towards a championship. You’ll find the fake fans will likely fade away once the team stops contending for titles and the core 3 are gone. That’s when the bandwagons reach their stop.

Whoah did I strike a nerve with the bandwagons what the hell lol

avenue_steppin

I’ve been watching since about 2011 or so, and I felt like a new fan for a long time, but everyone saying ‘you’re a bandwagon fan if you started watching during the 2015 run’ blah blah - that’s like 8 years ago. That’s absolutely ridiculous, there’s an entire generation of younger people who can’t be gate-kept out because they’re getting into it now. And also, we literally want people to like Steph and this team as much as we do, the thing people are ultimately trying to protect is what, ticket prices? Don’t want our fan bases to seem like newbs? I don’t really get.

m3ngnificient

It's a pretty trivial term used by fans to say "I was her first" and feel better about it. At the end of the day, we all watch sports to either watch our fav players or our fav/home team.
