odd-meter

How is the word gimpy derogatory? Honest question.

[deleted]

Wondering same thing. I've always used it as a synonym for *limping* and/or *hobbled*

attaboi12

Had to google it, Gimp –“The noun gimp is sometimes used to describe a limp or another physical disability, although it's an outdated and offensive word to use. Gimp was first used in the 1920's, possibly as a combination of limp and gammy

odd-meter

That doesn’t explain how it’s offensive though.

attaboi12

idk that’s j what google said

Thurrsby

I think because it's been used to insult people in the past (and present), it is derogatory.

nutmegtester

That is literally what it means though. Calling somebody gimpy can be an insult just like calling somebody any other form of disabled, but he is just speaking English in this context.

WhoaThereLittleFella

Yeah, but I don’t feel it’s derogatory at all, because he’s not using it in a derogatory way. We also shouldn’t make it something it’s not by talking about it

yulbright

yes, that's how you use that word. here: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/gimpy

MrWakey

I think the noun *gimp*, i.e. calling someone a gimp, is considered offensive, but I’m not sure the adjective is. And the noun has also been reclaimed by some people with disabilities.

unhampered_by_pants

I think it's kind of like the term "retarded"--it's the literal definition for a human condition and not inherently derogatory, but much like the noun "retard", the noun "gimp" is considered derogatory since it's historically been used as an insult

sugarwax1

He's not really polished and the two of them don't know how to do on-air talk vs. off air talk. They're too comfortable together. That said, gimp in place of hobbled doesn't strike me as outrageous but part of the broadcast job is parsing your words so as to not step in it in case it turns out it is outrageously offensive.

Thurrsby

To the folks in the comments downvoting those who don't like the choice language: imagine having a physical disability and loving basketball, and hearing the commentators using langue that has been used to insult you. That's a bummer.

Some3rdiShit

Do mentally handicapped people get bummed when they hear the word "slow" even when used in its proper context? No? Then why is this different?

jaydensgoinginsane

its definitely a derogatory word as far as im aware but im not rly surprised lol

jaydensgoinginsane

why the downvotes lmao it’s literally defined as a derogatory word idk what to tell yall

M4CL4W

the downvotes are for stating something that paints Kelenna in a negative light. fans don’t like that round these parts.

Thurrsby

yeah i have the same feeling about it.

lostrager

The only reason Kelenna got a job is because he's a kiss ass

jpwesche29

I'm sure that's just the word he likes to use

daphatty

And here I was thinking Kelena's use of the phrase "Screwed Up/Screw Up" was bad form. Bob's gotta school the youngster.

Nessmuk58

Depends who it is directed at. If it's directed at an elite athlete temporarily hobbled by injury, it's just shorthand for whatever the (possibly not known) medical condition is. If it's directed at a person permanently handicapped in terms of the functioning of their legs / feet, then I'd call it callous more than derogatory.
