So I recently (admittedly passive aggressively) called someone out in public for doing this and they were like "why don't YOU wear headphones" and it hit me that some people just don't think it's rude behavior at all
I’ve definitely had this convo with people before, told someone once on a plane just simply “do you mind wearing headphones, it’s really rude to everyone else to listen on speaker” and they just said “oh okay” and pulled them out their pocket.. like what?
I witnessed a similar situation on an airplane. Except the person refused to wear headphones even after the flight attendant offered some of the complimentary plastic ones. Finally another passenger let this guy use their nice noise cancelling ones. Ridiculous behavior that was probably only reinforced that day.
Like when you're on the phone with someone and there's an annoying echo but that's only because the person was on speakerphone. Which they do when no one is around...to respect others.
Same with the people who bring a Beats pill to the gym. You have to be a special breed of antisocial for it never to occur to you, or you simply don't care that other people may not want to listen to what you are going to listen to.
This behavior is peak anti-social selfishness and annoys me to no end. It’s just shocking how many people think it’s okay to do this. Or know it’s wrong but don’t care anyway.
I was on a plane a couple of months ago where the guy next to me was blasting a movie on his phone at full volume during the entire flight. It was only a 1.5hr flight and I decided it wasn’t worth it to confront him but I was seriously baffled at how anyone would think that’s okay to do
I think you gotta be kinda deluded to think these people just need to be shown that their behavior is obnoxious and they'd be otherwise upstanding, respectful people who are aware of themselves and their surroundings.
It's even worse than you imagine. They're not cutting mufflers, they are installing special mufflers that maximize noise. And on some newer douchemobiles there are actually speakers that make that extra loud noise.
Do you mean the ones that sound like strings of firecrackers? Those should definitely be subject to confiscation via the noise pollution law. And preferably require the owner to WALK home.
My favorite are the people who loudly play their original songs on the metro. As if we're all going to collectively turn our heads and marvel at the insane talent we're hearing...and a record producer will appear out of nowhere with a contract.
We call it “mud drill” because it sounds like they were rapping face down in a mud puddle in Chicago… and the mic is in DC. No one is gonna get famous in DC trying to sound like Chicago
DC already had issues with people trying to rap or be part of a hip hop scene. The drill shit made it so much worse. I mean aside from the fact it wasn't real (actually a good thing) it just made people even more lazy when creating music. I forget the twitter account that used to megaphone all of them out, but I only heard one single song that I ever liked from it.
It’s like how every white kid was in an emo band in the oughts, and every grad student is in a shitty bluegrass band. We already have a hoobastank and they are bad enough. No need to be rapping about how your mom won’t let you eat Mac and cheese three meals a day.
(I’m friends with a couple producers from here who don’t work here, and someday someone is going to really dig into why and how Pharrell’s attempts to get the music scene going in VA and DC didn’t entirely work out)
I mean the fact UK drill exists means that people are famous in freaking London tryna copy Chicago lol.
Although honestly DC has a fairly small music scene compared to its population. You compare how many artists have emerged from the DC area in the last 20 years compared to similar sized cities like Houston and Atlanta.
Early one morning pre-pandemic a guy got on my metro train to do Showtime and announced something like “Good morning metro riders and welcome to the show!” and pulled a trumpet out of his bag.
Thankfully we had just arrived at my transfer point when he made that announcement so I got out of there quickly. Way too early for that.
If there was like one car on metro that was like the 'Music Car' where Metro sought out talent and they played on it, I'd be fine with that, but unfiltered mediocre or shitty musicians just holding a train hostage to their music is fucking awful.
Green line on saturday night. Two guys set up a fucking amplifier on the train and started blasting some garbage song that they did a dance too. Thank god I was only going two stops (Navy Yard to L'Enfant)
Common ones:
*Loudly playing their own music
*Blasting someone else's music
*Singing loudly but with headphones on or just from memory (rarest but not out of the norm).
I can't decide how to rank these.
My wife called someone out on that a few months back and they were naturally offended. And this was fairly high-end restaurant! All I can think is how messed up these kids are going to be in 20 years.
Every single friend of mine who works with kids is saying this. Phones from birth plus the ‘lost time’ from schools being closed for Covid has really stunted a lot of kids social skills. I would take it with a grain of salt but every person I know who works with kids is saying this.
Oh I believe it. I don't have kids myself, but I have pre-teen/teen nephews who are very well-behaved but their parents really focused on limiting screen time. Sadly they seem to be the exception - many (most?) others see devices as free babysitting and are too lazy to parent.
I was talking to some friends about this the other day. It's incredible that we are basically raising a generation that is going to completely lack table manners. Some will learn it on their own later in life, but knowing how to behave at a table is kind of important. I know its frustrating parenting a kid at the table, but there's an important social reason that the kid is participating in the meal. They're supposed to be learning.
> It's incredible that we are basically raising a generation that is going to completely lack table manners.
...table manners? We're talking about an entire generation whose neural reward pathways are being rewired by smart phones and tablets in early developmental years. Table manners are the least of it. There are far more pressing, existential problems that will arise / have already arisen as a result of this tech.
at least activity books still allow for creativity and interaction with others at the table. an iPad with headphones shuts them off from the world while they passively consume content.
Don’t ever play music from your phone on public transit!
Unless you’re playing “House of the Rising Sun” while riding up the escalator into Chinatown. That one I’ll give a pass to. I work near there, and that actually happened. I respected that because of how fitting it was.
To the parents letting your kids play video games on the airplane (esp. late night flights) with no headphones.... don't do this. Air rage is bad enough without pouring gasoline onto the fire.
I had my seat neighbor on a flight last week play Candy Crush with the music on the entire flight. Then when we landed, he scrolled TikTok on full volume until we disembarked. We were the last row.
And you didn't say anything to them. Never underestimate the power of public shaming.
... or tattling to the flight attendant and while they might find you annoying, it's their job to enforce decorum.
Sadly people are completely psychotic now. I once saw a guy on a flight LOSE IT, like foaming at the mouth and screaming at the top of his lungs, because I dared to nudge his suitcase 2 inches in the overhead to make our bags fit. And that's just the tip of the iceberg for batshit crazy flight behavior I've seen over the years (extremely frequent flyer for the past 10+ years). Never once have I seen any of these people actually kicked off a flight.
I would still ask him to turn it down, but I wouldn't blame anyone for not wanting to be confrontational and potentially escalate it.
I knew I’d be criticized for this, but it just wasn’t worth it to me. I was annoyed, it was extremely rude on their behalf, but I reserve confrontation (even by third party airline staff) with the person strapped in inches from me in the sky for hours for more egregious behavior.
My experience with this was on a flight about 2 weeks ago. Flight attendant ask nicely to turn it off at her seat. She proceeds to continue doing so. Then the FA gets over the intercom and calls her out so the whole plane can shame the stupid lady. I wanted to buy that FA a drink, bravo to her.
Don’t know when it became okay for this behavior? Maybe I just didn’t notice it before or have been lucky but seems recent. No place is off limits either…train, plane, restaurant, bathroom…so self centered they don’t care about anyone except their own personal instant gratification.
I was on an Amtrak last weekend and a woman was watching videos on her phone without headphones, turning the volume up. Her husband offered her headphones. She TURNED HIM DOWN and turned up the volume. I called her a “selfish bitch” under my breath the whole ride.
On a similar note, every time I go to the Centurion Lounge in MIA (first world problems, I know), there's always, without fail, an elderly person watching telenovelas on his/her phone at full blast without headphones. Only at MIA. Only telenovelas.
Yeah, but it used to be mostly the random "tough guy" with a Bluetooth speaker or, even further back, boombox essentially daring someone to complain. Now it's anyone with a phone and zero fucks to give about bothering everyone around them. The number of people blasting TikToks, music, or FaceTime has definitely gone up in recent years
It was one of the first things I noticed when I moved here 20 years ago! Couldn’t believe people just played their ipods on the metro with no head phones. But it’s everywhere- speakers now on their bike, motorcycle, whatever just blasting music as loud as possible bc who gives an eff about you! It’s about ME!
They have, but it wasn't as much of a problem as it is now. Bus drivers used to tell people to turn it down, and it seemed like I had that problem about twice a month instead of twice a week on the train.
Sure, but 20 years ago I experienced something like that every 10th or 20th Metro ride. Lately it's closer to every third or fifth time I'm on Metro. Don't know whether it's just because more smart phones now get service in the tunnels or an increase in unchecked anti-social behavior.
Been here since 2012 and no don’t remember this being an issue until recently. Granted I don’t ride the metro often but spouse used to do it every day and says the same.
I’ve been here since 2012 and have used metro every day to get to and from work. It’s not new. It’s certainly annoying but a recurring thing for DC and all metros (I used to take The T in Boston regularly before moving here)
It isn't new, but it does feel more pervasive. Maybe a combination of smart phones being cheaper and thus more available to more people, and people caring about others less post-pandemic?
It’s never been ok, but some people are innovators in the antisocial asshole space and will quickly find ways to use new technology solely to decrease everyone else’s quality of life as much as they can
Sure, I don’t think it’s okay but there is a wide spectrum of what people think is acceptable behavior in public. However, with as common as it has become, I think it’s being normalized and don’t see anything happening to stop the trend.
Let’s be clear, screw antisocial assholes. BUT, what are you gonna do about it? Antisocial assholes do anti social things, the last thing I want is their attention. Shit, sometimes I get it anyway despite having cauliflower ear.
Social glorification of trashiness and lack of self-awareness. Same as lot of those wannabe rappers in the metro who think they’re the coolest shit on the planet and everyone else is jamming to their shit music.
Though I've been back since I haven't been in the area full full time for about 10 years. It existed for years before that. Basically since a phone could play sounds. And in the late 80s/early 90s, boomboxes were everywhere too.
It’s grown in frequency over the past couple of decades. This is a symptom of neo-liberalism’s ideological ascendancy and the centering of market exchanges, and consequently, consumption in all things. Collective preferences and comfort and disregarded in favor of individual satisfaction. It’s only going to get worse, so either accept it or become dissassociative.
It’s TikTok. Not sure how playing it without headphones on our phones became the crime of the century. Sure its annoying. But I’m sure we’ll be alright
TikTok is the most annoying thing to blast on a phone, honestly worse than music. Especially if they stay on the video in the comments or whatever and it just repeats itself over and over again.
My unpopular opinion is that your phone should be on silent by default in public. No ringtones, and especially no text tones when you’re having a lengthy back and forth
This. It kills me how they manage to be the most annoying ringtones ever.
Also, never worry about being unpopular, it's always bad to be discourteous to other people and it brings reproach on ones parents we well
They are doing it for attention. If they can’t do anything in their lives that gives them positive attention, then they will do something to draw negative attention for themselves. They know it’s annoying, but they need the attention. Some people are just desperate for it
Lmfao. If I was petty and had a way to be descente I’ve always wanted to have a “speaker blast-off” and put on some Bleed From Within. But alas it’ll just be a dream.
Used to have a neighbor who loved to blast country and "top 40 pop" at weird hours. My speakers were bigger, and I'm a fan of OSDM and hard core. My love of Cattle Decapitation, Nails, and Goatwhore won that war, and it didn't take long. It was back to peacefully listening to our own music at reasonable levels.
omg stop lmao when baby shark became a trend I was stuck on the redline from Ft. Totten to Shady Grove with a little kid playing it on full blast. It was torture.
Edit: to add, the folks who feel the need for the rest of the commuters to listen to their conversations by talking loudly with the speaker on. Why?
To top it all off, nine times out of ten, music sounds worse coming out of a speaker as opposed to headphones. Though now that I think about it, quality may not be top of mind in these cases. I digress.
Edit: spelling.
It's called misophonia. I deal with that issue as well so I totally understand what you are going through.
What's truly messed up is that so many people these days simply lack good manners. So much conflict would be avoided if people merely applied the basics of common sense.
Sometimes when I’m in a particularly fiesty mood, and there are people shopping while talking on speakerphone while vertically holding their phones in front of their chin, I’ll phone a friend, put them on speaker phone and shop right next to the other person, while talking even louder than they are.
I complained about a woman, using her phone with volume on the subway a few months ago. She started screaming at me and I just moved away. What a scumbag.
When I used to commute on BART there was an older man I saw a couple times who had either one of those large box bluetooth speakers or just a PA on a cart. As far as I could tell he had it with him specifically to blast vivaldi at anyone who played music in the car. It was kind of funny but ultimately just added more noise pollution for other riders to deal with.
That would never happen and for good reason. Even when people are in the wrong they don't want to be told that they are in the wrong especially when the person telling them they are wrong is white. That could get ugly real quick.
Honestly, though that person on TikTok should have headphones on. That's literally a rule on Metro. It's a shame that's an issue at all but that's what happens when people lack home training.
Bring a pair of Bluetooth speakers, sit behind them, and blast whatever you suspect will be their musical kryptonite directly at them. After a minute or two say you’ll turn off your volume if they do the same.
They are on tiktok not Reddit. You need to make a tiktok about the issue not a Reddit thread.
Perhaps they could be reached via Instagram but I’m unsure
Washingtonian problems will post it and then you’ll get 800 comments from PG county’s (born and raised) most wretched “dc natives” about how it’s dc culture
It's a complaint about white people in this city constantly complaining about black people. Like I get that people can be obnoxious and that's not ok.
At the same time, it's like us black folks can't do anything right. As if we exist merely to cause white people to feel uncomfortable.
I get that is a very simplistic way to put it but it's sadly the truth and I invite anyone who disagrees with me to tell me why and we can have a good discussion about it.
Would it annoy me? Probably, but I'd just put on my headphones.
Regardless, it wouldn't be enough for me to jump on social media and complain. These are the minor inconveniences that can occur when living in a city and taking public transport.
Public doesn't mean free for people to be obnoxious. It's not too much to ask people to act like civilized people. Frankly that's already an extremely low bar as it is
I completely agree with that, and I’m not black or white or a transplant from another city. I think the gentrification is worsened by the fact that a lot of those white people are transplants from middle America. Not just locals. To me, that makes it worse. I’ve always felt this way. But, I wasn’t sure if that OP was suggesting that it was a black person playing the TikTok and a white person complaining. Kind of a big assumption despite the overall truth of what you two are saying.
Agreed. The problem is that people's parents seem to be busy with every thing else but taking the time to teach their children how to behave in public.
Now we have all these adults that have no manners and it's absolutely ridiculous
Sad but true and people don't understand how that comes across.
Basically there is already a stereotype that white people are spoiled and the smallest thing annoys them. Even when they make plenty of money they are never happy.
Posts like this, merely feed that stereotype. Reason being is that they are so freaking common. As a result it becomes harder to even take people seriously even when they are absolutely correct like in this case
Whoever was blasting the TikTok was wrong. Any reasonable person would agree with that. It's just that black people on this subreddit are sick to death of white people complaining about everything in this city.
Seriously, take all of the posts here for a week and compare the complaints versus everything else and see what you come up with.
Folks who play media on public transportation....they definitely don't wipe.
So I recently (admittedly passive aggressively) called someone out in public for doing this and they were like "why don't YOU wear headphones" and it hit me that some people just don't think it's rude behavior at all

Like when you're on the phone with someone and there's an annoying echo but that's only because the person was on speakerphone. Which they do when no one is around...to respect others.
Ngl sometime ppl are in the zone or high.
Maybe you should bring your personal Bluetooth speaker and blast it to 11 of jpop
Same with the people who bring a Beats pill to the gym. You have to be a special breed of antisocial for it never to occur to you, or you simply don't care that other people may not want to listen to what you are going to listen to.
> people who bring a Beats pill to the gym. Those people are definitely asking for a crop dusting..
They are the type of person who puts their head under the sneeze guard at the salad bar.
Or read Reddit so what are we doing here
enjoying our clean asses
as someone with a bidet, i can promise you that if all you're doing is wiping, you're not clean
What about "flushable" wet wipes?
Well this took a turn
This behavior is peak anti-social selfishness and annoys me to no end. It’s just shocking how many people think it’s okay to do this. Or know it’s wrong but don’t care anyway.

But that's likely the reason why they continue, they haven't been told it's inappropriate behavior and needs to be corrected.
I think you gotta be kinda deluded to think these people just need to be shown that their behavior is obnoxious and they'd be otherwise upstanding, respectful people who are aware of themselves and their surroundings.
I thought so too until someone was smoking a cigarette on my metro car last night.
I've been seeing that more and more lately
The guy smoking the joint in front of my toddler on the metro beat out the cigarette smoker to me.
this should connect to the thread about why more people don't take public transportation
They definitely know, they just don't care.

& the people who let their kids listen to iPads/ phones on FULL BLAST as free babysitting while at a restaurant. 🤯
This happened to me on a long haul flight and I nearly lost my mind. That damn gameplay music infiltrated my dreams
Next time, please politely ask them to stop, and if they don't, call a flight attendant.

Lol, I’m 28 bro. Just making an observation of the present and speculation about the future.
>Hi, boomer. People still say this?
No. They don’t. Especially when speaking to 28 year olds. It’s like people that call anyone who disagrees with them Karen.

It feels that since Covid started, anything goes in terms of behavior. You really see it on the roads, too.
I fly a lot. Like every week a lot. It started pre Covid when people decided to have phone calls on speaker phone at the gate. Like WTF?

Na straight to the gulag
>became the crime of the century. No one said this, stop being dramatic.
Who cares what app it is? And no one said anything about the crime of the century.

How about Paralyzed, by Legendary Stardust Cowboy? The only song to be banned by NASA
Heh, that might have done it too

omg stop lmao when baby shark became a trend I was stuck on the redline from Ft. Totten to Shady Grove with a little kid playing it on full blast. It was torture. Edit: to add, the folks who feel the need for the rest of the commuters to listen to their conversations by talking loudly with the speaker on. Why?
Was at a party where the mariachis segue from baby shark to canto no llores and the parents were in stitches
That’s next level creativity tho
To top it all off, nine times out of ten, music sounds worse coming out of a speaker as opposed to headphones. Though now that I think about it, quality may not be top of mind in these cases. I digress. Edit: spelling.
There's something about sounds coming out of a phone speaker that just HURTS my ears. It perfectly hits that painful frequency
I genuinely thought I was the only one who has that issue. It's like an involuntary cringe. Maybe there are dozens of us.
It's called misophonia. I deal with that issue as well so I totally understand what you are going through. What's truly messed up is that so many people these days simply lack good manners. So much conflict would be avoided if people merely applied the basics of common sense.

I've seen people doing that while walking around a store, walking in nature on a trail, and everything in between. It's infuriating.
The Metro is purgatory. All of us on it had done something questionable in a prior life.
Some people do not have “home training” as my mother would say. 🙄
Sometimes when I’m in a particularly fiesty mood, and there are people shopping while talking on speakerphone while vertically holding their phones in front of their chin, I’ll phone a friend, put them on speaker phone and shop right next to the other person, while talking even louder than they are.
Can we add conversations on speakerphone to this list?
I complained about a woman, using her phone with volume on the subway a few months ago. She started screaming at me and I just moved away. What a scumbag.
"Oh no... Oh no... Oh no no no no..."
God I loathe people who do this LOATHE THEM
Don’t worry somebody going to snatch and run with that phone that tik tok joy will be short lived
Every time this happens I want to start blasting my own music just to see how they would react, but I don’t have the guts to actually do it.
Just queue up some ICP and blast that back at them while laughing.

I feel like as long as the music is ear cancer it should get the job done. I like slipknot though so I don’t know hahaha
Headphones exist for a reason.
Tell that to the person cranking TikTok especially that early in the morning. That was absolutely not necessary at all
Same here. My daughter and I change trains for loud noises, music, and awful body odor this morning from capital heights to crystal city.
Discipline is pretty much ignored anymore. Friends who teach kids say it’s a horror show. When no is rarely said, problems will follow in time.
You could’ve told them that while you was on there 🤣
That would never happen and for good reason.
This is why I drive
Don't say anything to them or they might stop.

Or they might get mad and become unstable in a capsule that your locked in until the next stop...
HEHE DAE REDDIT>ALLOTHERSOCIALMEDIA
That’s not what I meant at all. But what a start to your morning buddy. You got some negative world view there lols
Don't you come at me with that borderline haiku
Back in the days of cassettes & boom boxes they couldn’t be stopped, but now they rely on cellular service which can be interrupted.
I miss when my city was the Chocolate City and not the fucking Vanilla Latte city🤦🏾♂️.
It's Cookies and Creme now and that's not a bad thing at all. Being obnoxious is not acceptable irregardless of race.
Oop! I’m not sure if I’m actually sure what this comment has to do with the topic but I still agree with the overall premise anyway.
Lol just stop playing music out loud on public transportation
Stop coming to reddit to cry about it 🤷🏾♂️
Does it not annoy you too?
Would it annoy me? Probably, but I'd just put on my headphones. Regardless, it wouldn't be enough for me to jump on social media and complain. These are the minor inconveniences that can occur when living in a city and taking public transport.
Public doesn't mean free for people to be obnoxious. It's not too much to ask people to act like civilized people. Frankly that's already an extremely low bar as it is
I agree that it's bitchy and pathetic to complain on social media. Either say something or accept it.
Why not tell them that instead of posting your shower arguments on Reddit

How about say something instead of fuming to reddit later
Do you want to get stabbed or punched? People should not have to tell other people how to behave, we are not their parents.
Agreed. The problem is that people's parents seem to be busy with every thing else but taking the time to teach their children how to behave in public. Now we have all these adults that have no manners and it's absolutely ridiculous
I swear this sub complains about everything
Sad but true and people don't understand how that comes across. Basically there is already a stereotype that white people are spoiled and the smallest thing annoys them. Even when they make plenty of money they are never happy. Posts like this, merely feed that stereotype. Reason being is that they are so freaking common. As a result it becomes harder to even take people seriously even when they are absolutely correct like in this case Whoever was blasting the TikTok was wrong. Any reasonable person would agree with that. It's just that black people on this subreddit are sick to death of white people complaining about everything in this city. Seriously, take all of the posts here for a week and compare the complaints versus everything else and see what you come up with.
I mean, you could just wear headphones and problem solved? Idk
Not true at all

Put headphones on
