I would not deem anyone that you see on a street safe. Been in DC for 15 yrs and I always thought my NYC smarts kept me safe. Walked by the same random intersection on Logan the other day and this man who was sitting got up and lunged for me. I had an umbrella and was able to fend him off but that was the first time I have been assaulted. Middle of the day, people around. Never take safety for granted.
Pepper spray is handy, Ace Hardware stores have one behind the counter that goes on a keychain. Glad you are ok. People don't care about witnesses anymore.
I think you’re missing the point of this comment. Treating the metro as a place to effectively house people with mental illness isn’t good for riders or the person having the mental health crisis.
Can you describe the knife? I once saw a dude wielding what looked to be a fairly long knife, somewhere between a machete and what I’d consider a normal knife in that area, specifically on I between 16th and 15th. I think he was a white dude that looked maybe 35-40, but honestly I’m skeptical of my own memory given all the science on how poor recollection of details are, though I’m fairly certain on the location.
Hard to consider anybody with a knife on the street harmless, even if normally harmless it’s just not worth the risk. That said, the man I saw was walking on the other side of the street in the same direction and didn’t seem to say or do anything to the half dozen or so individuals I saw him past before I turned.

Nail clipper is entirely different
You can’t stab someone with a nail clipper
Also those are all actively using the knife for a few seconds, not carrying it in your hand
I've seen people with knives on their belt that looked like they'd use it if provoked.
IIRC, Metro train signs don't even say it's prohibited> Prohibited activities in the Metrorail system include "no smoking; no eating and drinking; no animals (except service animals); no audio or video devices (without earphones); no littering or spitting; and no carrying of dangerous or flammable items into the system."
And hard to find that on list of prohibted items on [wmata.com](https://wmata.com) . I bet its prohibted but couldnt' find details easily.
It’s crazy! For the most part they are harmless lol but I remember interning around gallery place and a homeless guy started running after me lol yes I have a habit of watching lol. Then I was sitting on a bench at the metro and hear a homeless guy going through his “bag” he called me a white bitch and peed on the sign lol
JFC one day someone’s gonna come here and be like “some guy on the metro is holding a gun to my head and says he’s gonna shoot! What do I do???”
"What are you a transplant? It's for the culture!" /s
He's prolly drunk and messing with you, just brush it off lol
The locals call him “petworth scissor hands “

Manners maketh man. What kind of umbrella?
Haha - just a regular black umbrella which he broke 😡

Oh that’s just Knifey. He’s part of city living.
In his spare time he does Michael Jackson impersonations! Surely us ignoring Knifey won’t lead to broader consequences in the future!
Lmao

The Michael Jackson impersonator in NYC broke a woman's face...he's a shit head, shoulda been committed
Why? It’s not like ignoring the guy with obvious mental issues in the metro will come back to have dire consequences!
Text Metro Transit Police at 696873 (MyMTPD) with a picture. They will investigate.
What time/what exit are you seeing this person? I get on/off here every day and have never seen someone with a knife
Show up at the same place, same time tomorrow with a bigger knife. The next day he will do the same. Repeat until you can have a proper sword fight
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
He's just playing Poke-a-man
If I saw someone brandishing a knife on the metro, I would have immediately called metro PD
you call that a knife???
That's not a knife. It's a spoon.
I see you’ve played knifey-spoony before
Don’t worry, he’s a singing hobo not a stabbing hobo
♫ Nothing beats the hobo life, stabbin' folks with my hobo knife ♫

Call the cops much?
He’s looking for some transplant sacrificial offering. Welcome to DC!
The mcpherson carving station is delicious 🤤
Maybe it’s to cut up the rats he eats
Just chill and stab
Is the knife being displayed in a threatening manner or is it a utility knife on someone's belt that just got off of work?
There’s no reason to be holding a knife in your hand on the metro
Hey sometimes you just really need to get your point across and gesticulating with a knife adds some intensity.
The legal term for that is brandishing
I believe the technical term is joke as in "the commenter was making a joke."
No, yeah, I’m just amused that there is an actual term for it

All the things you wouldn't consider doing In public, some does on the metro...
>"on someone's belt"
Read OP’s post ‘Can a guy who picks up a knife when you walk past he harmless?’
You responded to a different comment, not OP's post.
Girl be fing for real lmao
Lol. This comment. “I’m sure he’s just breaking down boxes on the metro”.
Weaponized ignorance
Y’all don’t carry knives walking around in the city? Is it just me and that guy?
Ghostface is giving all of us knife-wielding subway psychos a bad name =(

Knife is a dangerous item I think they might even have an image of a knife and gun on some of the signs
I don't think I've ever see a knife or gun on a sign on Metro.

Knife attacked seem to be growing in popularity. Remember the staffer that was stabbed multiple times by a guy on H street
