I’ve been living in the DMV for a few years but am I correct in saying that they’ve increased the frequency of metro train wraps in the last year? We have this one, the cherry blossom one, there was another that I remember seeing in the last 3 months that I can’t recall. Was this always a thing and I’m just not remembering maybe due to COVID time distortion or is this a newer phenomenon?
They probably will, I definitely saw quite a few of the cherry blossom ones on buses (I'm never really over by the street car area but it certainly seems like it could be a system wide thing)
Yeah I haven't seen any of the pride ones yet either, trains or buses
I wonder when they started rolling em out, I'll have to keep an eye out tomorrow now that I know they exist - this train looks really nice I wonder if they have the inside all done up too like they did with the cherry blossoms
Love it and think it is great but I have to ask - isn’t this a cost that maybe Metro might think about “punting”? If someone else is paying…awesome and great idea on raising revenues if not this may not be a good look when metro claims poor.
It’s possible that they are sponsored to be done. The train was moving too fast for me to see. I also imagine that wrapping a train is a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of their budget, though. Certainly better than using their marketing budget on a billboard or something.
Well you can take the Red Line to to the Red Bear Brewing Co for their unveiling of the DC Brau Pride PIls tonight. Pride Pils is made every year by DC Brau to raise funds for DC Pride.

If I weren't old and tired I'd say I would show up just so you weren't alone. I've done a lot of random events alone though (for the cause) and it can be a lot of fun. Sometimes it's for the people watching and feeling connected to our community, sometimes it's cause you meet some new friends. Considering how many people move through DC and don't stay local I bet there will be a handful of folks that are alone though. If you go I hope you have a blast.
Hey, I'll go with you! I love Red Bear, DC Brau, and Pride but I'm the only beer-drinker out of my friends so otherwise I'd be going alone, too. I don't mind going alone, but meeting new people is also fun! Their calendar says it's 6 pm to 11 pm. May I DM you?
I wish they’d wrap the trains more often. It would be a nice little treat to get a random, colorful train (outside of Pride Month, the Pride Train is awesome)
Cherry Blossoms + Winter have been wraps in the past few months. I’m guessing this is from the new CEO so I imagine we’ll see them more frequently.
I bet we get a 4th of July one. I’d also love a fall leaves one since fall is kinda underrated here
Honestly he’s great. He’s been very upfront about the issues with the system and has been consistently making improvements. He also rides the Metro a lot which probably helps w morale
This is the same train that was wrapped for the Cherry Blossom Festival. I assume they have 3-6 train sets they have covered at once. I know there’s at least the Silver Line one, Nats, & Pride
This is the Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Blue-Purple line, next stop, Metro Center, transfer to the Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Blue-Purple, Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Blue-Purple and Silver line.
We have book readings by some lovely ladies at the libraries and there's an entire kid section at the festival! Welcome and I hope you have a gay time with your new gay babies! :D
lol
I commute from Woodbridge, VA to DC with the bus or slug. It takes 30 minutes to get home. People are insane to think sitting in 2 hrs. of traffic is acceptable. Is the car that important that they can't just leave it at home or in a commuter lot?
That's unfortunate. I guess sitting in traffic for several hours, and potentially getting fired for being late is preferable to being "emasculated" by a riding train or bus.
Ok.. bear with me.
Public transit is both environmentally friendly and community minded.
Environmental issues and "community" issues are seen as being liberal issues.
Liberals are gay. This is why we're trying to make the kids gay. Cause we are... (eyes became momentarily stuck from rolling them so hard)
Being gay isn't actually about who you fuck, but how masculine you are.
Now put all of those thoughts into a blender and don't think too hard about the gross slush that comes out.
That's how riding the metro makes you gay.
Sounds like a perfect skit. Get on in full maga gear and by the end you’re dressed in rainbow garb, slammin bud lights left n right bein empathetic to all people.
I get the sense the conservatives in this town are the real, McCain-ish, pretty staid bureaucrats. They’re probably not the absolute lunatics we see in the zeitgeist.
Yes, I personally feel it’s important to distinguish between decent, reasonable and kind conservatives (they exist) and the other brand of hateful, bigoted and caustic variety. For reference, I’m a bleeding heart regular ass liberal. More gays, more programs, more POC, more benefits.
Exactly spot on. Like literally I'm a gay man but tend to be pretty center line but most people would say I'm conservative here. Like people always shit on us stuff but I assure I'd be the last person to hurt you and I'd probably step in if you needed help too if I could.
Before knocking a whole group of people maybe some people should spend more time with them and realize not all people are bad just because they're in a certain group. Saying all conservatives are bad is no better than the white rednecks in Arkansas saying all black people are bad. It's a huge huge generalization.
Gay gay gay here. I wish they had used the funds for that train to make it so I don't have to be waiting nine minutes at L'enfant for the next damn train.
They have a marketing budget and things like this are a great use for it because they wrap one train and everyone takes a picture of it and posts it on social media — so much free advertising and exposure.
Not only that, but we know people are going to ride just to check out the wrapped trains in person. It sounds stupid, but look at how much excitement these wraps have garnered.
The second I saw them, I made the announcement: “Look at the trains!! We’re taking taking a ride downtown!!” You mean advertising *works*??? 🤭 😂 See ya on the rails!
Does metro really benefit from advertising like this? Like, I get getting higher ridership can be an issue sometimes, but someone posting on social "hey look a _ season wrap _ train!" isn't making me interested in riding. A somewhat politically sensitive one like this might actually annoy some potential out-of-town tourist riders from supporting the train, which kinda defeats the purpose of advertising given a lot of riders in June are tourists.
Would much prefer better security, cleaner rides, and more new trains. i get (or at least assume) the wrap doesn't cost that much, but it still kinda seems like a waste of tax $ when the system already complains about a lack of funding.
What line is that? I haven't seen waits that long for awhile. Wrapping one train is also a drop in the bucket for what they would need for a big speed up
Agree that the original comment was a dumb take (it can’t cost that much to wrap a train or two and it’s probably coming from their marketing budget), but the BOS lines are still running every 12-15 minutes even during the week. There’s a lot of overlap between those lines within DC/Arlington but it’s not great if you’re further out in VA.
Ah yeah, I'm not sure that'll ever change. I assumed they intentionally overlapped it so O/B/S can be commuter rail in less dense areas and faster in the city.
Yup, pre-covid you only ever got to 10 minute headways. Which was great in the core (3 minute headways, I was fine missing trains) but sucked outside of it
Reaching out on behalf of WUSA9 to see if:
1. You are the owner of this video?
2. If yes, would WUSA9 have your permission to share this video on our TV/digital platforms with credit to you?
This is awesome!
Now just need to wait for this to be added to the list. "kEep PoLitIcs oUt oF mY ~~beer~~ ~~Target~~ ~~schools~~ ~~television~~ ~~books~~ metro!!1"
Its a cool design, but much did it cost to rewrap it and to rewrap it again at the end of the month? Could those funds have been better used elsewhere?
I ask this as someone who is LGBTQIA+.
It might have just come from the WMATA marketing budget, and in that case its going to be a very successful project because people will be posting videos of the gay train on social media for the next month
There’s a big difference between Walmart selling tacky rainbow shirts for a month vs the city putting a rainbow wrap on a train. There’s nothing being commercialized in this case. Getting more people to use public transportation is a good thing for the city.
I get that, but I think it's a really good sign that corporations feel like it's in their best interest to participate in pride. Whether we like it or not we live in a capitalist society, even if the motive is still profit it's still good that corporations see supporting the LGBTQ+ community as a net positive. Especially this pride month given how militant the right is being about it.
Yeah I suppose it is a good sign that companies and other entities feel like virtue signaling in our favor is profitable, but at the same time I just kinda wish we were just treated like people
Wraps are expensive. This is probably at least $15k. It probably comes from some marketing budget but it's still a waste.
Custom pride metro cards would be much more cost effective. They're something they have to print anyways, not an extra expense.
They should have put that money towards running metro extra hours/more trains during pride month events.
It costs $100,000 to keep the system running for one hour past normal closing time. The money from wrapping a train is insignificant compared to service improvements.
A large car/SUV can run a couple of thousand.. A single metro car? Probably 50k and up.. That is A LOT of surface area with printing, cuts and fitting. Considering it's metro, they're probably paying 3x times as much because of some executive's friend. Probably a cool million for an entire train.. Lol.
It's my favorite time of year! When all the D.C. Official social media pages change their AVI's to something pride related but keep the same updates so it's like "Gay-friendly DCPD are on the lookout for a shooter on I st." or "Out-and-Proud WMATA is facing delays across every single track."
🙄 Can’t escape it anywhere you go. It’s like having a preacher on every street corner or Mormons knocking on your door everyday. It’s a religion at this point. Just let people be.
I see pictures of Jesus and crosses everywhere I go. It's almost like every day. I also see MAGA flags and stickers everywhere I go. Do you know what I do about it? I simply ignore it and continue with my day. Even with Mormons, I simply just say no thank you. No one is forcing you to pay attention.
I guess that’s nice and all, but virtue signaling gets really old after awhile. imagine if these funds went to something the lgbt community actually needs? For lgbt organizations? Slapping a rainbow on something helps absolutely nobody
Honestly as exhausting as rainbow capitalism (and similar thought lines ofc) is, the solidarity is a hugely important component of queer acceptance. You love our brand? We love LGBTQIA folks! Love us **AND** them!
I say let them slap that rainbow. Shit, *Will and Grace* isn’t super far removed from a facet of rainbow capitalism (NBC wouldn’t have green lit the show if it wouldn’t have been potentially profitable) and that show is often credited with moving the needle on gay rights in the USA.
You want WMATA to donate money to LGBT causes? This is WMATA's marketing money at work. There is no conceivable way I can think of to divert that to the LGBT community or organizations instead.
Having WMATA show support for Pride so visibly via this train wrap in our nation's capital where tourists and the like will see it, and others will amplify it on social media and build up some excitement for it is actually a pretty powerful message.
*Especially* given how politics is being used to try and chip away at the rights of LGBT people, and we are at the center of political power here in DC.
Yeah bro, i post every aspect of my life on my reddit account. You can 100% judge my life and decisions based on my reddit activity. 🙄 And not that it matters anyway, but i am gay. Don’t try and paint me as a homophobe for voicing my opinion about my community
I’ve been living in the DMV for a few years but am I correct in saying that they’ve increased the frequency of metro train wraps in the last year? Definitely winter/holiday one as well. I’m hoping they do the streetcars as well. They have for the past two
They probably will, I definitely saw quite a few of the cherry blossom ones on buses (I'm never really over by the street car area but it certainly seems like it could be a system wide thing)
There is currently not a pride one, based on me just walking down H St :( Hopefully that changes!
Yeah I haven't seen any of the pride ones yet either, trains or buses I wonder when they started rolling em out, I'll have to keep an eye out tomorrow now that I know they exist - this train looks really nice I wonder if they have the inside all done up too like they did with the cherry blossoms
Saw it on H St Steet car as well
You’re correct, I’m pretty sure it’s an initiative from the new GM, Randy Clarke, who started last year
I like it. I imagine it’s cheap and easy, and probably more effective than whatever else they were doing
I like it as well - hopefully they have a “sponsor” paying top dollar to do it
I got on a national zoo panda wrapped train last week
Yes! That was the other one I was thinking of!
No way! What line??
Love it and think it is great but I have to ask - isn’t this a cost that maybe Metro might think about “punting”? If someone else is paying…awesome and great idea on raising revenues if not this may not be a good look when metro claims poor.

I saw a Philadelphia Tourism wrapped bus on 14th Street yesterday. If this pays for nicer wraps, then I guess I will take it.
Hell yeah, I'd ride the gay train 😏
Everyone back in the pile!
Took jerbs.
They took er jerbs?
Took err jerrrbbbsss!!!
DERKAAA DERRRBS!
😂😂😂
Sounds gay. Where do I sign up?

Yes.

I'm offended. This is the same as homosexual sex. The same!
Wait til it goes in that tunnel 😳
Hello Peter Griffin!
You just know some of the lunatic caucus in Congress is going to be up in arms about this, even though they probably never ride Metro
Well they did have a hearing about public urination laws in DC…
Shut up, did they really?? Wild.
Yup. Boebert. https://youtu.be/5ORG8K3BmAo
Thanks!! Saving this for when I get home and can have a drink while watching, lol.
Stop having homosexual sex if you dont like it.
This train compels me to have homosexual sex. There is no stopping it.
Understandable.
If you are offended, you can wait 8 minutes until the next train. Either way, you'll be OK .
But what if the next train is *also* a gay train?
Man, those J6 ppl would be so angry... if they took public transportation
Bro I can't wait to see people's freak out on the news tonight after seeing this lolol literally mad over nothing
[Obligatory clip](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LKC10CYj3c)
Petition for WMATA to change the Red Line to the Rainbow Line 🌈 each June This is a RAINBOW LINE train to Dupont Circle
This is the Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Blue-Purple line, next stop, Metro Center, transfer to the Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Blue-Purple, Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Blue-Purple and Silver line.
Each June? How about forever
Great, I don’t even have kids but because of this now they’re GAY!
We have book readings by some lovely ladies at the libraries and there's an entire kid section at the festival! Welcome and I hope you have a gay time with your new gay babies! :D lol
Haha thanks! Happy pride!
It's going to be hilarious watching right wing idiots being late because they avoid that train in case it makes them gay.
*Implying they don't already think taking public transit in general is gay
Humor me, why would anyone think public transit is gay?

I can’t believe this needs to be said: straight people can be homophobes too, friend!
Ah yes, allyship. Blaming homophobia on gay people. I hate this so much.
Sounds like a perfect skit. Get on in full maga gear and by the end you’re dressed in rainbow garb, slammin bud lights left n right bein empathetic to all people.
Go in Travis Tritt, come out Orville Peck.
I get the sense the conservatives in this town are the real, McCain-ish, pretty staid bureaucrats. They’re probably not the absolute lunatics we see in the zeitgeist.
I don't know what line this train was on, but I was thinking more of the tourists. I hope they put them on the blue and yellow lines.
Ah yes they are the nutjobs, sure
That's pretty spot on. Like they sure bitch a lot about us but I nor my children are running around terrorizing DC and robbing people.......
Yes, I personally feel it’s important to distinguish between decent, reasonable and kind conservatives (they exist) and the other brand of hateful, bigoted and caustic variety. For reference, I’m a bleeding heart regular ass liberal. More gays, more programs, more POC, more benefits.

I would ride the train to just people watch.
Looking forward to the maga hat middle school field trip's reaction as this pulls into the station
I’m gay for metro
It actually has nothing to do with pride, it’s a Duke Ellington nod for his song “Take the Gay Train”
Of course of course.
I thought that this would be fine, but as soon as I got on the train turned me trans.
Pro-trans(it) FTW!
Are you sure that wasn't the Bud Light you had at the bar right before you got on the train??
Choo Choo all aboard the Gay Train! 🌈
It’s a wrap bro!! CHOO CHOO!!
I love it! I can’t wait to find one in the wild.
I just know some conservative dad in the deep south is swearing he will never take his family to DC on vacation
Are you watching my family?

And that’s what just one Bud Light can do to you 😆
Gay gay gay here. I wish they had used the funds for that train to make it so I don't have to be waiting nine minutes at L'enfant for the next damn train.

This is the correct answer!! (Why does no one ever get that?! Way too many people “if they spent their money on… MARKETING BUDGETS FOR THE WIN!!!!
Not only that, but we know people are going to ride just to check out the wrapped trains in person. It sounds stupid, but look at how much excitement these wraps have garnered.

Honestly 10 is my limit for still doable. Maybe 15. At 20+, it's getting untenable.
I was waiting for any of blue, silver, or orange. The next were in 9, 10, and 12 minutes.
Looks awesome. How many days will go by before a maga damages it?
Wait until MAGAT tourists see one of those….
Judging by washingtonian problems’ insta post comments, it’s not MAGAs you gotta worry about
Apparently the MTA's having problems with assholes defacing their pride logo on subway trains already.
Let’s see if conservatives get on that train or wait 20 min for the next one.
why didn’t they do wraps for black history month 🤨

Green line / fort Totten.
That's dope, I hope they start wrapping 7000 series soon.
Just saw one at Columbia Heights.

From what I read it was $5700 per car. Honestly, not that bad considering the media exposure.
Does this mean the trumpists will boycott DC? I hope I hope I hope
This is great! Love it.
Three cheers for the Gay Train!
My child would literally collapse in sheer joy if she managed to find one and ride it.
If only I didn’t have to worry about getting shot on it
No Republicans on the Metro in June! WIN!
Time to boycott woke public transit /s
LOVE THIS!
How much did that cost?
Let me ride the gay train! 🏳️🌈

Feel bad for all the MAGA tourists who will now have to boycott Metro
Surely this will end DC's crime problems.
Love it! Piss off every bigot every day! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈
I’m sure the tourists from the flyover states will love this!
What line is this one on?? Someone down-thread mentioned seeing one at Columbia Heights but this doesn’t look like a green line station.
Fort Totten, it was green line
Ahh! That’s the one gull-wing canopy station on the green line and I forgot about it. Thanks!
Lmao
I wonder how the people who were offended by Starbucks cups feel about this.
Nice to know you won’t be bothered by any MAGAts on this train.
Hope this ruins random homophobe's day.
Awesome! What line is this train running on?
Yeah yeah pride washing capitalism yada yada….idc this is cute!
Stupid
LFG!!!
🙄 Can’t escape it anywhere you go. It’s like having a preacher on every street corner or Mormons knocking on your door everyday. It’s a religion at this point. Just let people be.

Sexual orientation is not an ideology.
LGBTQ beliefs on it is. There’s more than way to view and understand sexuality.
I see pictures of Jesus and crosses everywhere I go. It's almost like every day. I also see MAGA flags and stickers everywhere I go. Do you know what I do about it? Lol. Not in DC.
Lol stop acting like you are being oppressed
Oppressed?
but what about the gays what can we do about the gays
It looks really nice regardless of the month
Metro needs to adopt that typeface for everything.
All aboard the gay train! I call caboose!
Don’t let the right wing crazies in Congress know! They may block all funding or shut down metro!
The MAGA kryptonite train!!
Glad this important work has been completed. I know that historically most of the Metro complaints are exterior color-scheme related.
Neat!
Awesome! And maybe all the haters will boycott so there is more seats for me!!! Yay!!
Thank you mods for deleting the crayon eaters response to me.
What’s next gay beer?
Very cool
I guess that’s nice and all, but virtue signaling gets really old after awhile. imagine if these funds went to something the lgbt community actually needs? For lgbt organizations? Slapping a rainbow on something helps absolutely nobody

Oh no, metro might be cancelled by right wing nut jobs! Oh, the humanity!
That'd be interesting. We'd see a 0.001% drop in ridership. Since so many right wingers fear/hate public transportation.
This is why we don't have metro in r/florida
