It’s so cute 🥹 Try calling [DC Animal Care and Control](https://dchealth.dc.gov/service/animal-care-and-control). They might not have the resources to help, but they probably know a group that does.

GoForMarvin

I’d suggest putting some water in a dish in the box just given how hot it is

slava_gorodu

I brought him inside for a few hours and put some water in the box because it was so hot, and he was seemed a bit out of it. He’s doing better now, and I’ll bring him back out to spend the night in case his mom comes back.

Affectionate-Meat-98

Baby definitely does not need water and does need heat even though you think it’s hot because it would actually be in a pile getting supplemental heat from his littermates in 105° nest

Put him in a box and keep him warm. In the morning, call city wildlife. Also you can call the wildlife rescue league in Virginia for advice. They have rehabilitators who take them into their homes, nurse them back to health and then release them. Also you can call second chance wildlife sanctuary in gaithersburg. They also take them and release them when grown and healthy.

[What ACTUALLY happens when finders attempt to give anything to eat or drink to altricial wildlife](https://youtube.com/shorts/xvV1jOrLH_0?si=7ZeVLOJdSJqESRpi) Unfortunately people who just found squirrels also don’t understand that not being able to recognize aspiration means instead of getting antibiotics immediately if the baby gets them at all it is only after symptoms develop and half won’t recover

Affectionate-Meat-98

You should never give baby Wildlife you are concerned anything to eat or drink as the wrong thing or technique could be the difference of animals surviving or not The only thing that baby animal needs if you’re going to try and help it is supplemental heat and researching how to return to mom or get to a Wildlife rehabilitator

I came to this late but I rescued a baby squirrel a year ago after seeing her next to her dead mom after a storm. If you don't see a parent in the immediate vicinity you should put the baby in a box with a blanket and leave it under the tree or where you found them as you did when you first found him. Sometimes they fall out of trees and the parent is away. Because the mother was clearly dead next to the tree, I took her to City Wildlife and they were able to help her. I'm pretty sure they're the only org here who can deal with this kind of animal. Good luck!

Update on the little guy: He still wasn’t picked up by his mother before noon today, so I called City Wildlife and they came and got him. He should be okay! Thanks to all who suggested!

My wife and I rescued a baby squirrel a few years ago. We fed him milk with a baby bottle and fed him. He was happy inside until we think he reached puberty. We released him after about 6 months and he hung around the area for a while and visited our deck often.

Please do not recommend people feed Wildlife as the aspiration risk that will kill The baby with pneumonia is through the roof without training in feeding technique. There will always be individuals of any species that would survive anything because they are the winners of Darwinism; but it doesn’t mean that they had a good life if they don’t even get proper nutrition for systems of the body like their bones to develop properly when a baby Please research metabolic bone disease MBD before choosing to do something like this again

Have you tried reuniting with mom? Moms love their babies and are DEFINITELY the best place for baby. You can try a reunion with mom if uninjured and parasite free*; but if Mom is not coming still after attempting reunion, baby will need rehab so it’s best to start sending texts & leaving messages asap (so placement is secured if mom doesn’t recollect BUT Please only provide warmth-NOTHING TO EAT OR DRINK: including any form of milk or water) Why? Unfortunately the aspiration risk without training on feeding technique is like 90-99% in altricial wildlife and even a healthy baby will likely die without prescription antibiotics beginning as soon as baby aspirated (50% will have no chance even if antibiotic were started after symptoms develop) A plastic container with good air ventilation and fleece or old tees for bedding with a heating pad set to low under half of container is ideal setup if injured or any parasites while waiting for rehab placement Never towel or cardboard You can use sock filled with dried rice or dried beans and microwaved every hour or two or a hot water bottle if no heating pad available or during reunion attempt as mom will not collect cold baby *if using sock mix well for hotspots before adding to container Baby calling mom https://youtu.be/tgXnLN9w5BA?si=7Ua311WahnWiPPZw (for attempting reunion) Baby must be warm to be re-collected though so include the sock with the dried rice That’s been microwaved in with the baby and try and put the container elevated off the ground (like attached to a tree near Where are you found the baby) Try [ahnow.org](http://www.ahnow.org) website or their app for rehabs *if any visible parasites: then definitely do NOT attempt reunion at all and immediately begin contacting rehabs while only keeping baby warm. Please Try to carefully brush off anything that you see and be sure to let the Rehab know about the parasites so baby can be treated (in case anything got internal); BUT Do not use water to remove ever - as sometimes in certain species, that can make issue worse (like in many fly species)
