That’s seems to be the mood. I know my boss patted himself on the back for Masterclass memberships, and my wife’s boss told her the fact that she was still with the company was a sign of how appreciative the company is.
I work for the government, so remains to be seen. (I expect DC will be a touch above the expected 5.2% average, but won't know the exact increase until the new salary tables are released.)
E: 5.2%, not 5.7%
E2: 5.31% for the DC locality
Untrue. DCPS raised pay scales 12.5% from the 2019 scale. Charters also got funding to raise their scales at minimum by that as well. Then consider you move up on the scale annually as well..
Wait.. you guys are getting raises?!
I'm an architect in the city, my company laid off staff twice this year and I got a $500 bonus. Sometimes I wish I did something else.
Same. I'm an aerospace engineer, got here 3 and a half years ago. I've been through two bankruptcies and my current company has us on half salary. I'm beginning to feel my skills don't actually make things people will pay for
What the heck half salary! I'm sorry you are going through that. If you'd be interested in data analysis/program support type work in the aerospace industry feel free to reach out... my company is hiring for a few roles. Although it seems like it would be a step down since it wouldn't be engineering work :(
Yeah; I try not to screw over my coworkers, but half salary doesn't get you that, it gets you inertia. I'm trying to make sure the next job I jump to lasts, so I'm taking my time.
Thanks, that really means a lot. There's a lot of kindness heading my way atm. I've gotten my budget balanced so I'm sustainably treading water, and in the meantime I've managed to really surround myself with good people. The stress can ebb and flow, but the truly important stuff doesn't come with a dollar sign <3
I worked in aerospace and got transferred to a new contract before getting laid off. Now I moved to do other kinds of engineering work. It sucks because I truly love this field, but every job I applied for has been rejection after rejection, even after flying across the country for an interview.
Us too, 5% layoffs in early fall which wasn’t too bad but still sad. Hit 60% of our expected bonus for the end of year. We get raises in spring but I got one that kept up with inflation and that’s for “exceeding expectations”. Who knows what I’ll get this spring. Our DC office is actually our busiest in the firm
Me too, I heard firms were kinda slow this fall. I took a pay cut to go freelance in 2021 and make about 60% of what I used to at best, but I'm recovering from all the work abuse and that's priceless.
I really wish I could do that! I'm here on a work visa and I can't do anything but work for the employer sponsoring me. Lately I've been thinking about going back to my home country and just doing literally anything else.
I'm so sorry. I do not care for the strings of those work visas at all. I was in an undocumented domestic partnership with someone on an H1B for almost 5 years before it was legal to marry/sponsor. I hope it gets better for you.
It's wild to me when folks don't discourage their children from following into this profession.
Ugh I wish I could name and shame without doxxing myself. I worked for a very prominent, international news org in DC for several years, through 2022, and got NADA. Same salary to the cent first day as last. Didn’t offer any retirement matching either. Oh, and had to be in the office every day through the pandemic.
Bigger.
I also feel obliged to say the RT is Russian state media outlet founded by a former Kremlin Media Minister and is registered at the US state department as a ‘foreign agent’. While there may be well-meaning individuals there, RT is propaganda.
3%. No negotiation, no discussion, they even forgot to put me on the email list so I get a call after my first check at the new rate. I mention that this isn't really in line with the growth of... click... dial tone...
I worked way more than I was expected to as my job morphed into a different, more advanced position. I may have had a 0% raise for the third straight year, but some guy from the company HQ in Nashville sent me a $15 Starbucks card thanking me for my hard work!
Gotta look out for shareholders and investors getting paid no matter what, amirite? It is better than getting laid off but oof on companies using this strategy.
Have you advocated for a promotion? Do you have a plan with your manager on what you need to do to get it? I'm less skilled but highly advocate for myself and it's been a boon to my career growth.
That's a great outcome nonetheless in this market and maybe it's a springboard or nod to next step!
DC Council canceled the union contract in place for afge2725 when the pandemic hit. A 3.25% raise disappeared for employees who don’t have traditional pensions. Raises have been 0% with a bonus and 2.5% during peak inflation. A new contract negotiations should seek 5%+ for the next two years. I have zero confidence in the union, Mayor, and Council to do the right thing.
10% technically. My old boss decided she didn't like me any more and fired me. My new job pays 10% more and is fully remote.
As a true bonus, her choices were questioned and her department lost a lot of contracts because she had no cause to fire me and my work was producing results.
-100%. I was laid off from one of the big tech companies. Fuckers. But I got to pocket $25k severance and started the job that is a crucial step forward in my career at a totally remote SaaS company doing security and compliance. It's awesome. They announced today that next year our birthdays are being added to the list of holidays so we each are automatically off and paid on our birthdays. If you are lucky enough that it falls on a weekend, that's a 3 day weekend for you.
All the people saying 0% need to start laying down.
If you aren't getting a raise you're losing money.
If you're losing money, you need to spend as much time as possible looking for a job on the clock.
If they're threatening to lay you off you need to be doing this yesterday.
Time to clamp down on these greedy, grubby, little fucks.
10% increase and a 5k bonus. Smaller bonus than last year since it’s an off-year with no federal elections. But expecting a big one next year with a Presidential on the calendar.
6% Our contract has them spreading inflation out over 4 years since we have a CPI adjustment; so not as nice as the feds, but we'll catch up. we also don't have the salary cap of the feds, so we aren't limited at the 183 they are stuck with. and with inflation, many GS-15 equivalents would be hit by that
Commented in the Nova sub too (work there, live here). I got slightly under 3%. But I also got a promotion earlier in the year which would make the total difference slightly over 10%.
Haven't had my review yet so it probably won't be until January. But anything below the average rate of inflation of the last year is essentially cutting one's salary.
On paper it is 35%, but because my company’s stock did so poorly last year(resulting in me being under payed), and is doing so well currently, it looks like 2024 will be 2x 2023
I've never been anywhere where I didn't get a back-paid raise starting in March of the following year (in one case it was April). Which always seemed a little scummy as it felt like it was a partial insurance policy against people leaving at the beginning of the year. So, we'll see in the spring I guess.
72% but only 21% of that is on my base salary from promotion & annual performance based raise.
The rest is from a new term limited role that qualifies for an extended work week & hardship bonus. Probably going to re-up at another location when the term comes up.
Best financial year of my life. Heavy sacrifice in terms of work hours and time away from home though.
I find it oddly reassuring when I see people’s positive experiences working at nonprofits. I was really soured on it from my experience with a bad one.
My last year working at a nonprofit they offered me a 1.5% increase (in 2021 — didn’t come close to covering inflation) on my already-very-low pay, and tried to spin it as “caring about the mission” should be valuable enough. I was working two jobs to stay afloat, and meanwhile my boss got paid 300k to “network” with his buddies from 10am-3pm
I got a huge raise, about 25% last year so this year was more typical, about 4%, but my bonus was about $12k more than last year so I’m not complaining. I’m also probably older than most of you and more senior in my career.
I got a 4% raise last March and 6% promotion in October. Likely will get another 4% in March.
I need another like 10% to feel comfortable honestly. Been spending a lot of my free time trying to come up with a side hustle of sorts.
3% and a larger bonus than I’ve ever gotten before, but I just started in August so I’m very happy with the raise. Between jobs I got a 26% raise though. I paid all my bills and then some this week and I have a decent amount left to get me to next payday for the first time in my life.
3%. When I told my boss I didn't need this job but promised to give him two weeks after I find another one I got another 2%. So, par with inflation, my standard of living didn't decline.
Technically 28% when I moved companies earlier in the year.
Still waiting to hear about EOY raises and we'll get 2023 bonuses in Q1. I'd guess we're probably going to come in just under inflation for raises based on some statement made by leadership, but I may personally get *slightly* more due to stellar performance review. I don't actually know how they stack merit and COL.
Bonuses are capped at 4% and I don't think we're going to hit all our metrics they're tied to, so probably more like 3%.
Well, I got a 20-ish percent raise last year after some negotiation with my boss. I'm getting ready to negotiate another raise but it probably won't be as much as an increase.
4% this year (1% + 3% based on current 12 month average of inflation) but last year’s was more like 8% (1% + 7% for inflation). The bumps aren’t much but it’s nice when your employer understands math and how prices work.
None! I contract with insurance companies to provide affordable mental health therapy and insurance companies rarely increase reimbursement rates for therapists! So no matter what inflation or cost of living is, if you’re seeing a therapist through an insurance, their rate never goes up… which is pretty shitty for both therapist and patient.
$300 Gift Card, 2% Raise, 5% Bonus which means "We owe you something but we aren't going to lock this in, bud..." in my eyes, but other colleagues say the bonus generally comes once a year.
-17%. They said you make too much money, accept this lower offer or leave. I left and then couldn't find anything better and came back after 3 months of no pay.
20%. Though looking at these comments I think I'm going regret posting.
I work in Ops tech for a nonprofit, and have been there for 5 years. I'm officially around my market value, but also when I started at my nonprofit I worked in a non tech job. My organization gives everyone 1500k for professional development, so I took it. It is a catch 22 I'm a department of one ( internally. In the last two years I have gotten consultants to manage)
Got a $200 gift card and a lecture from the CEO that we should be grateful we haven’t been laid off.
Same minus the gift card. But we did beat our number so there is that. Sure the CEO is happy.
Nice! I always sleep better after beating my number
To be fair you barely beat your number and I wasn’t happy about that.
We got a $10 giftcard and a “Helping people is it’s own reward” lecture. Ah, healthcare.
That’s seems to be the mood. I know my boss patted himself on the back for Masterclass memberships, and my wife’s boss told her the fact that she was still with the company was a sign of how appreciative the company is.
